Even if somehow they were still under copyright, there wouldn't be anyone to pay royalties to. Sea shanties and similar "folk" songs aren't composed and have no composer, they ...just are. I mean they are collective works which change over time and get slightly different with each repetition. Like all folk art. So, yeah, nobody can claim ownership of such things and all of them are in the public domain. Recordings of them can be under copyright, but that's different.

Okay, in my opinion:

1) The backer NPCs: not that big of an issue, as you can safely just ignore them. But it's great that the sequel won't feature them in such a way.

2) The visual aspect: the biggest problem here is how the visuals, especially when it came to combat, seemed confusing and chaotic. Clusterfuck-ish :) Comparably, the IE games never suffered from this. PoE2 looks like (at least in those videos and gifs they showed) they're well on their way to fix this.

3) The main story: like you said, there was a clear disconnect here. It was to be expected considering how little time they had to make an entire game (and system) from scratch, but it's still pretty weak.

4) Stronghold: they expanded it a lot with the added quest and other companions' adventures.

Apart from that, I think they correctly identified the biggest weaknesses of PoE1:

- Lack of visual clarity in combat.

- A stronger (i.e. - more cohesive) story with a central idea and vision behind it. Unlike the first one, they had a lot more time to pre-plan and plot this one out, and Josh is personally going to go over all the quests to ensure there's not another Cipher/Watcher lore confusion like in PoE1.

- Factions being an underdeveloped afterthought. Here they're promising to pull a Fallout: New Vegas regarding them.

- Companions having little personal agency in the story. In PoE1, the only companion (as far as I know) who could attack you was GM, and only when you wanted to hurt a child in a certain quest. Again, they're going the F:NV route here.

- A greater motivation for the PC to care about (and participate in) the main plot.

- More (and better utilized) skills. I forget the exact number they said, but more than 10 skills will be in the game.

- More scripted interactions. TWM alone had a lot more than the entire base game, and they were pretty fun and appropriately old-school.

- Better enchanting. Josh said that you'll be able to improve the quality of the gear only one level (so, for example - from fine to exceptional), and that, likewise, you'll be able to improve the enchantment effect on it once (so, for a burning weapon - from flaming to inferno).

- Fewer trash mobs, encounters more similar to the ones from TWM. Self-explanatory.

Thing is they already addressed/acknowledged/are addressing all the complaints I've seen(above 2 posts included).

OMG! I hate that " manage your rations" shit. It just adds a lot more unnecessary micromanagement and boring routine to the gameplay. Hated it in the Expeditions games, now its here. Cant we just have an old school IE type of RPG.

I wonder if PC/crew can be cannibals can they be other things[insert fallout perks/traits] also? Is this getting more and more like Fallout's system? Bethesda already ditched most of it, could be good here :P

If the corpse eater is literally a corpse eater, not f.i. just heals itself a bit after every kill...and I thought cannibalism must be a trait in the crew system which they could assign to crew NPCs, which then maybe broadened to most other characters.

The "full" companions will also have some traits defining their personality. I don't know, yeah probably it'll be limited to specific characters/companions :/

Glad they decided to incorporate cannibalism - it fits both the circumstances (a long sea voyage into the unknown, with a not necessarily loyal/sane crew), as well as taking place in an area populated by not-orcs which are heavily inspired by Polynesian cultures (which were some of the last places in the real world to stop practicing cannibalism).

Wasn't cannibalism in Polynesian cultures strictly a funeral rites affair?

With better, more realistic-looking graphics, the concept of Grimoire Slam looks even more ridiculous. The last thing I'd expect in a fight to the death is to get slammed with a fucking book.

Codex Year of the Donut Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Hehe, when Grimoire Slam was first revealed during PoE1's development, a bunch of people on the Codex sperged out about how it was too anime-like or something.

I even bugged Josh Sawyer about it and told him to consider renaming it to "Grimoire Pulse" to make them happier. In retrospect, not one of our finest moments.

I'm trying to remember in which story there was a mobster who liked to interrogate people by hitting them with a phonebook.
