Playing Bard's Tale 1 on the family Apple IIc when I was in 6th grade and being totally cockblocked by the 3rd level Catacombs. I could not, for the life of me, find the damn eye. When I finally did, my party was almost completely out of mana so I literally had to fight my way back to the entrance with no APAR loving. Good times! I just wish I had hung onto my graph paper maps :(

.......and countless hours of 99 Berserkers!

It took me about a year of playing Blade of Destiny to finally get to the end. This was before I had the internet and I didn't have a guide or anything, so I had to tediously scour the entire world, door to door from every single house in the game, for clues. I had a notepad that I sketched out maps and wrote down clues in and every day I'd take it to school to study it. Actually, my pals would look at it too because I was the only guy who had PC RPGs like these, so they were all pretty interested in them too. So anyway, I finally get to the very end of the game and I'm in the tomb of Hyggelik about to get his sword. There's this feeling of relief I have - after a year of toil, I'm finally at the end of my journey, I can finally move on to something else. I save right before I get to Hyggelik and then watch the animated cutscene of him telling me all about the sword and my quest and whatever it is he talks about. Then, at the very end of the cutscene, he goes, "by the way, you're trapped in here forever if you took any of my treasure."

I took his fucking treasure. And I saved. It was my only save.

How am I supposed to know you're not supposed to take the treasure? It's lying around in giant piles, there's nothing anywhere else in the game that says not to take his treasure. There are no clues or hints outside that say, "by the way, it's a really bad idea to take the mounds of gold just sitting there in Hyggelik's dungeon." They just spring it on you. If you take the treasure you lose the game.

Fuck you Hyggelik, fuck you Blade of Destiny.

So anyway, I keep multiple save files now.

I love Alpha Protocol and have also done a no-kills playthrough, but the stealth system is far from perfect, tbh.

Reading this thread makes me realize even codexers couldn't care less about story, which depresses my view of humanity.

- The moment I talked with the god of Arcanum. It exemplifies why Arcanum is great and it made me feel good all week.

- Finding the last boss of Fallout 1 and having conversation with him

- Finding the scientist logs in Fallout 1 that explain how supermutants were made

- When you take over the computer system of the powerful guy's casino in Fallout New Vegas, and the dapper-man on the screen is replaced by this hugely ironic smiley face that represents an army of killer robots

- The ending to Final Fantasy Tactics, after all that fighting and manipulating, with the tragic relationship of Alma, and the heroes being lost in history

- After playing FFVI for the 50th time, I learned Celes actually tries to kill herself after the world is destroyed and she's lost the only person on her island. Previously I always just saved the guy

- Recently playing Avernum: Escape from the Pit and finding a cave full of friendly spiders that want to fuck me like little anime high schoolers

- Gremio's death in Suikoden 1 - recently watched it on youtube again and it's just so simple and powerful

A memory from my first playthrough of AoD:

I presented Feng's "magical" ring to Anitdas with Cassius in charge and Feng having run away. Cassius called me out for bull-shit, and I was sure I would be executed on the spot (I was already on bad terms with Antidas and Cassius for trying to do Feng's dirty work), but I managed an impromptu argument that since he's never seen a magical ring before he wouldn't know if the one I'm holding is real or not. Antidas accepted the ring and gave something in return. I really felt like I cheated death, and in a game where you're likely to be killed over what you say, it felt awesome.

Well, here I'm! Time to send mine cool memories.

Making Marburg fight with me in the Rome when i was playing second time. Really, many things can be said about Alpha Protocol, but show me game where you can make boss so pissed of at you that instead of doing things his profesional way he just fight with you to death.

Another AP moment: Fucking up Leland if you get on his site and later decide to create your own Halbech.

Mykul in MotB, that dirty fucker. Sucking up his soul was glorius. (Thanks for reminding me Jeasun, time to replay it)

Playing Incredible Hulk in Fallout 1, 2 and NV. (1 int, 1 charisma. 10 strength. Fighting without weapons. Really, playing dump gauy in these games is just masterpiece)

Vengeance -
in Daggerfall, Jesus Christ.

Playing as Bad Guy in Torment for first time and getting into Dei sensory stone... God, forgive me, but I cried too much. How I was such a monster...

Dagoth Ur backstory in Morrowind make me imagine my Nerevarian last words to him 'You serve well'. Also, killing Tribunal... fucking traitors, death to false gods!

Last part of Planescape with maxed wisdom where you could just make yourself believe that you don't exist. And it actually make you fucking don't exist and it was pure joy to see how TRANSCENDENT ONE lost his shit after he realized that you really can do that and you can force him to connect with him once more. (I prefer 'What can change nature of man' ending, but this is really good too).

Gothic 2 NotR and Saturas when we meet him first time... heh.

Playing module for NWN1 "Dance with Rogues"... Masterpiece. It was worth to buy this game only for this one and I didn't even include multiplayer there!

Arcanum again - The moment where you can save Virgil and change his alignment

BG Series - Killing Sarevok and Irenicus

Fallout 2 - Becoming Prizefighter\Pornstar. All those greetings from people of New Reno were priceless.

And again Fallout 2 - Becoming captain of the guard in VC. Man that was tricky...

Vtm Bloodlines - Ocean House Hotel ffs

Again Vtm Bloodlines - Saving Heather and then having her as a personal ghoul.

Morrowind - Dying for the first time. Spoiler: I was killed by a cliff racer.

Playing Lands of Lore 2 as the evil Luther. It was especially enjoyable because he was evil in such a mischievous kind of way, like a Loki or Cyric. Come to think of it, he was like a more powerful version of this guy. A true troll.

Pool of Radiance, heh. so many fond memories.

We were just kids back then when I played it for the first time, and I remember we all playing on one computer, each of my friends controlling in combat one of the party characters, six of us in the tiny room of one of my friends. We decided what to do or where to go by vote. We cheered, blamed each other on poor tactics, made a LOT of noise I tell you.

The Black screen with a "Loading, please wait" caption could take up to 10 minutes to load the game. And then, as we were playing a pirate copy, we only knew a few of the manual's passwords, so sometimes after three failed attempts we had to reload again!

In the meantime, while the game loaded, we played Battletech, or rolled PNP characters, or other nerdy stuff.

I remember a heated argument over choosing wether going to the Vhalinghen graveyard even if we were too low level. We ended up dying, and the horrible loading time described above made death a feared thing, believe me, so the upset and finger-pointing was big. We were always trying to tackle encounters that were above what we could handle, for instance, I'm sure we needed to try over a dozen times beating the Ettins at the Stojanov Gate (and each time we died, yeah, 10-30mins of loading).

On that playthrough I remember I had a fighter/cleric/magic-user. Man, how much the character sucked, you can't begin to imagine. Also, I remember being one-shot by Thyrantraxxus lightning bolt in the end battle and everyone else surviving.

Other than PoR, I remember feeling a chill when I saw the Daggerfall world map, and realized the sheer size it had. I hadn't played Arena yet, so the shock was big. I remember being so excited about exploring such a huge place.

Age of decadence.

I get invited for the best deal of my life in an alleyway and it so happens that it's my life that is in the balance.

Deus Ex.

I decide to not to listen to Paul and end up saving him for real against all video game logic. Same with Anna. I decide to shoot her at La Guardia and viola, it actually becomes a part of the story.

Ice Wind Dale 2.

I refuse to talk to the woman at Shengarn bridge only to find out that it was a ruse all along. Well played. One of the few good moments of the game.

Morrowind.

I read a random book and it turns out that the story in the book is a real event and it ends up giving me treasure if I follow it.

Vampire: The Masquerade

The Hotel.

Arcanum.

The gnome conspiracy.

I know it's been mentioned a couple of times already, and that PS:T is full of memorable moments, but "Don't trust the skull" gave me shivers like no other scene in any game.

On my first playthrough of New Vegas I was planning to murder Mr. House, but didn't know how to do it, as I had never even seen him in person. There was a locked door on the top of his casino, and I was sure that there was something behind it, but I couldn't get it open without a key of some kind. Then I remembered that in the destroyed part of the city there was an abandoned tool factory that used to belong to Mr. House and his half-brother, just some tidbit that I had got from somewhere. I decided to take a peek, even though it was a long shot, hoping to find some kind of a clue on how to take House down. What do you know, after thoroughly searching the factory I found a key card to the Lucky 38 that allowed me to get past that door, which lead me straight to Mr. House. Of course, on later playthroughs I discovered that killing House becomes a non-issue after you get a bit further in the story, but it was still pretty cool to be able to do it like that, carrying out your personal investigation and taking out arguably the single most powerful guy in the game world.

Many aspects of Arx Fatalis bring back good memories:
  • The hilarious voice work for the goblins
  • The overtaking of Arx by Ylside warriors
  • Ice dragon fight
  • The entire crypt sequence
  • The gesture-based magic casting system
The whole game takes place underground and is very convincing at portraying its subterranean atmosphere.

Highly recommended if you can stand the 2002 graphics that have aged reasonably well.

As strange it may sound it's from NWN. Probably the only memorable moment from the entire campaign. I made an evil cleric using a scythe, and then got inspired and decided to go on a killing spree. Well it turns out, there is an invincible girl in the game that will follow you everywhere, trying to kill you in retribution. I dubbed her 'little killer ballerina' (I think she might have used the kick attack animation). Guess it's just the type of evil humor that appeals to me.

Lands of Lore II - Dracoid Ruins

Earthquakes and windchimes. Why does no other game have natural disasters?

X-Com - One turn to win or lose, I sniped my own mindcontrolled guy with a disabling shot, then went on to win the round.

Dark Souls - Quelaag's Domain

I could probably think of ten others. Anything from LGS inspires memories, and SS2/Deus Ex.
