I don't know about Bioshock, but Bioshock 2 has weapons that are more fun to use and it's not survival horror which is a plus. The biggest con is that it has practically zero RPG elements, but as far as the shooting part goes its far superior SS2.

First there was Catacombs 3d, preety funny considering later Heretic/Hexen offsprings made by Raven. The engine of that one was used later on in Wolfie. I won't lie, after playing so many wads of Doom I'm really spoiled and after replaying the whole thing it felt like first person Pacman with nazi theme. You just grab the last weapon and maw through and through. There no elevators, stairs, the secrets force you usually to "space" the walls. The lack of map makes it more confusing in the endings of episodes. Some things age gracefully, other not so much. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is great game though, it's a timeless classic for me.

Still, you need to play at least once to see a perspective on how the genre changed rapidly through a couple of years. Kill the Mecha-Hitler for great justice !

The shooting has better presentation & the plasmids are more refined than SS2 PSI and complement the (shitty) combat, but that is as far as it goes. SS2 has superior and deeper everything else relating to combat: consequence for death, actual resource management, alt firing modes, challenging and varied combatants (including level design as one of them), a degree of intelligence required to create and maintain a successful combat build and so on.
Bioshock is absolute garbage. If I want a pure shooter I'll play Doom or something. If I want a deeper shooter I'll play SS2 and its brethren. Bioshock (and 2) succeed at absolutely nothing except being pretty and having a deep atmosphere. Things more attributable to its engine as SS2 would be better in that regard if developed on Unreal 2 due to actually being worth experiencing, having deeper simulation design and engaging game rules.

BTW in similar time (early 1998?) there was an obscure fps that took place on the moon and apart from shooting u had to control oxygen resources. Does anyone remember its name? I have to find a review in old Service Services magazine issues anyway, despite low score it looked interesting.

Wolf 3D at least has functional AI and Wolf's enemies are actually interested in stopping the player. I know that overcoming challenge is an old-fashioned concept that doesn't go down well with the awesome button crowd but come on:

I just suffered through some longplay footage and noticed that while the player can dual wield he never seems to encounter more than 2 or 3 enemies at once, what's up with that?

Also apparently there are literately 3 hours of derpy cinematics in this 10 hour long game.

Its most awesome feature at the time of release was using MMX processors, you couldn't run without it. It's a shitty game with braindead AI and belongs in the oldie graveyard. Play Cyclones or Eradicator if you want something better with similar themes.

ND is right. I haven't played the first game and I don't know much about it but Rising has bland and often confusing level design, boring enemies, unsatisfying gunplay and meh art in general. RMR also has timed missions (oxygen mechanic), protect the base type missions and escort missions. It was indeed marketed as a highly advanced MMX title but in reality the visuals were laughably primitive for the most part.

There are some nice ideas like the jet pack, mission objectives instead of traditional key and switch hunting but the overall execution is just mediocre to poor. You can also use a microphone to give basic voice commands to your simpleton squaddies and in MP. This was quite unique at the time but in the end it's nothing more than a gimmick.
