I think there were several versions of 1.8, because dying definitely sends you back to Olvar's Tavern in 1.8 that I have.

Use patch from FIRST message, it's last version.
I should delete events.bin? why?
Game should re-compile it after first run. Otherwise it would use old events.bin and would not bother with looking at events.txt.
