I play SWTOR off and on, typically getting a month of sub every year or so when there's a 12x xp thing going on, and going through a class story from 1 to 50. So far I finished trooper, consular, knight and IA... not sure whether I'll pick up the new xpac though (my 'main' is just level 58 after finishing all expansion stuff except for Ziost... not going to grind 2 levels just for that)

Class story mini-reviews:
  • Trooper - my first char and old main back in 2011-2012. Story sucks, it's just generic forgettable space soldier stuff. Some redeeming factors include navigating the traps during one of the story missions, the best goddamn companion in the entire game across all classes (M1-4X), and a somewhat nifty three-pronged assault as the last mission.
  • Jedi Consular - my second char and eventually became my main because healing is more fun than tanking in this game. Voice acting is terrible. Some amusing manipulative options in the story, plus I have a soft spot for low-key 'behind the curtain' plots instead of cutting people up with laser swords. Still, I think this story only rises above by-the-numbers 'jedi zen' crap if you go full darkside. Do it. (I didn't /sadface) Also, most of the consular companions have serious issues or are straight-up crazy (I think the only exception is Lieutenant Whatever).
  • Imperial Agent - third char, sometimes-alt. Quite good, and the imperial planetside quests flow a lot better than the republic ones. I went full-on dark side, but lightside seems just as fun in a different ways. Companions are total fucking psychos and I wouldn't have it any other way. Strongly recommended.
  • Jedi Knight - last char. It's like reading SW fanfiction about some author's self-insert Jedi starring in some Expanded Universe book series where the protagonist saves the universe from a terrible fate by the end of each book. Kill shit with laser swords! Recite the Jedi Code over and over while killing more shit with laser swords! Prevail against impossible odds! Then do it again! And again! And again... saving teh universe once and for all! I never cared for jedi, so this would be near the bottom of my list (just above trooper).

Lol, according to this guy apparently the Consular sucks for 30 levels then is actually good: http://landofodd.net/2015/08/20/the-worst-to-best-swtor-class-storylines/

I actually kinda respect his opinion because of how accurately he ranked the Agent and the Inquisitor (the ones I played).

I believe playing Consular for 30 levels just numbed his brain: third chapter is terrible, just in different way then previous two. Don't know if it is better Dark Side...

Smuggler's story I felt was the most detached from the larger goings on leading up to the war and becoming almost like the Bounty Hunter later on (as in you're being hired to do things because everyone is too stupid / incompetent to do it themselves). It's probably the funniest story line, or at least it tries the hardest to be funny.)...
Awesome, thanks.

Scoundrel has one advantage: stealth. Other fags have to slowly grind their way back out of some far to long interior, Scoundrel just sneaks by like a boss. Of course I rolled the gunslinger back then, so I AM one of those making long faces while everybody snuck by.
Hah, my only two were an Operative and a Assassin, so you were one of those long-faced ones I passed by, I see.

I didn't play with the 12xp boost though, so maybe now Stealth won't be such a dealbreaker.

I think now the 12xp permanent until the expansion release.

Don't fuck with my Inquisitor.
He has the blood line limit of a Sith Uchiha Clan.
By the time the game ended, he has 5-tails inside him.

Anyone check out the Fallen Empire twitch stuff? Saw some on Youtube search but I'm busy downloading porn so I'll watch them later.

Not watching the Twitch stuff because I don't want spoilers (I'm actually looking forward to Fallen Empire because of their stated intentions).

I'm nearly done with the Imp Agent storyline. Still don't see what is so good about it. I've completed Sith Warrior DS (incl. Hutt Cartel, Shadow of Revan expansions), Jedi Knight LS (Cub Scout crap), next up will be Sith Inquisitor.

The storyline actually branches based on your choices.

I've just completed the Imp Agent storyline. I played as a dark side Rattataki male, and
decided to give the codex to the Sith.

I may play through it again as a light side female, and see how differently things play out. I just found this: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=84244

I think my appreciation of the Imp Agent storyline will improve once I see the different paths.

Yeah I've played the Imp Agent but as you say, I've only played it once, so I can't legitimately confirm how different the paths are. Besides others' anecdotal evidence.

I suppose I can check Swtor wikia or something. In case you're curious.

Then again I'm not sure if it matters too much, since this is not the type of game where I'd replay the same class. So perhaps you're right, a better storyline is more important.

Now for some advice: I definitely enjoyed the Agent storyline over the Inquisitor one. Well honestly the Inquisitor one was really dumb and basically GAIN MAGIC POWERS.

Since I'm playing again I used this to help me pick a class. (Though I'm actually gonna try everything except the Trooper, Agent, and Inquisitor just to see which has more entertaining story and dialogue)

At the end of the day, I will end up playing the most fun class mechanics wise, and the inquisitor for me is still the most awesome class with force lightning spec.

That being said, still not sure I'm going to sub for the expansion, I usually played at work and now it's blocked by firewall.

Well fuck playing a Sith Warrior or JK. Forgot how annoying dealing with the Rage system is. I played a WoW Warrior but there were just a few abilities, so rage... uh whatever it was called... values quickly became memorized instinct. Ugh I forgot how annoying SWTOR is with its excess of skills that do (in general) the same thing with a minor change in numbers.

Brace yourself for the inevitable upcoming romance with "Bugboy"! Bioware's romances were always cheesy, but this one made me just say "WTF did i just watch?" loud. Well, it delivered. Sort of.

It finally killed WoW, huh?
Eh WoW is a pretty decent and solid MMORPG compared to other MMOs of any type; and in terms of EQ-likes, maybe penultimate behind Vanguard. The gameplay is designed solidly - the basic mechanics are easy to learn (and intuitive IMO), but it's important later to take into account aggro, mana, timing, role/role distribution/role rotation, etc. Not that I'm saying it couldn't be better, but it is a good game (mechanically, I mean - if encounters are shitty then that's a different story).

If WoW dies it's because it has run its course.

All of the classes have homosexual relationships, don't they? I used to think that was dumb, but now I rather like it so that I'm not forced to a shitty romanced due to gender choice.

Digression: I'm enjoying making characters based on what the voice actors have played. Got my Consular looking like Superboy/Superman from Young Justice. Got my female Bounty Hunter looking like Azula from Avatar. I was gonna make a JK who looked like Solid Snake (who is voiced by David Hayter) but again fuck the Focus/Rage system in such an overly-ability-plethora game. Not to mention the UI does not make things clear and easy to see, and it's unmoddable. Loved this type of HUD in WoW:

Grr I'm mad they didn't cast Steve Blum as a player character though. He could've played all of them. I suppose he didn't have the time, as he did VA two NPCs.

I think they're shit games by default so I don't care about MMOs in general, but the title of this thread never ceases to amuse me. WoW might be as good as MMOs get, sure, can't really argue that. Tried playing it for a bit, got as bored as I ever got playing a game and that's about it.

Were there any WoW-killers recently? That was almost a sub-genre a couple of years back

As a straight male I have no interest playing a female character who romances a male NPC. Men just don't interest me. I might lez it up with Lana Beniko if I ever play the expansions though. I'll probably just do the expansions with my Sith Warrior and just do the main stories for the other classes.

I think the only time I might do a romance, playing as a female, is if it had some real artistic merit. Artistic merit in SWTOR is pretty much non-existent.

I find it disorienting that whenever I open this thread all you guys are discussing is the narrative. Perhaps Bioware should re-brand this game as a collection of shitty TV episodes.

That's because there's nothing worthwhile about the game except the single-player storylines. It should've just been made a regular CRPG.

Also it's a WoW-clone so there's no point discussing mechanics.

Edit: And it should be branded as a collection of shitty TV episodes with like 1-2 exceptions. Thank fucking god they added the 12x class quest experience boost thought. It's for subscribers, but I actually haven't paid any money because I used a referral code :D I'll actually sub if the expansion gets good reception.
