They flat out lied about the state the game was in when it hit Early Access. Their graphical 'road map/completed' shit was exaggerated in just about every category.

They were criticized because these updates either completely overhauled major aspects of the game, proving they have no idea what they're doing nor a reliable design document
I agree on the first point, that they had no idea what they were doing, however I'd dispute you on the design document factor. There's plenty to be said for doing things dumbly, starting out from a dumb point leads to a dumb product. I'm not saying that they had a reliable design document, I'm saying, it's quite likely instead, that their testers were all yes men, and brown nosers, who didn't want to tell the game designer anything was bad about their game. That's if they had testers at all.

or added only irrelevant stuff like Christmas or valentine's themed items. If they do not change the game from being a completely linear quest set in a sandbox world full of generic nondescript monsters, it's going to be forgotten really soon.
I agree completely with this.

They flat out lied about the state the game was in when it hit Early Access. Their graphical 'road map/completed' shit was exaggerated in just about every category.

If I recall correctly, their roadmap was litterally just the build up to a state where it was playable, not where it was completely functional, I don't recall if they had anything really written in there content wise, but most of it was backend. Things like, implementing frameworks and stuff like that. Other than those points, your point does still stand, and the game was probably released a fair amount too early.

EDIT:Looking at, http://playstarbound.com/roadmap/ which is still up by the way, yeah, they never said much about implementing content, just about implementing systems to implement content in the future.

Fuck them and your apologist ass with a rake.
Did I perhaps somehow make you angry? I can't see why, all I did was point out reality?

By the way, I'm not an apologist, this game is actually one of the worst games I've played so far in the genre. The monsters are too frequent, the combat is not fun, the building is awkward, and the mechanics are half implemented at best. However, I recognize that the game is only probably a quarter finished, they should have released the game with a title like "Starbound:The Don't Play This Alpha."

If you read the blog before release however, they openly stated, to not play the game until at least phase 2 of the beta if you wanted an actual game.

If I were an apologist, I'd be saying things like, "Nah man, the game is awesome, you just aren't playing it right." or "Nah, it's going to be a great game." The most I've said, however, is disputing peoples false points or correcting their assumptions, and saying that the core mechanics, CAN work, not that they do. I'm not blanket denying what people are saying, I'm accepting their points as roughly accurate, but clarifying them, for instance in your case, you exaggerated, so I corrected your exaggeration. Your core point still stands, they did exaggerate before release, however, their road map was not where they exaggerated, that was where the obfuscated their progress, couching it in terms that roughly seemed to indicate important things like content, but when read with a careful eye, really meant frameworks and systems, rather than an actual game.

I'm not saying that they had a reliable design document, I'm saying, it's quite likely instead, that their testers were all yes men, and brown nosers, who didn't want to tell the game designer anything was bad about their game.

That seems to be a big problem these days ("Nah man, having no save system is actually better because it makes the game more intense" -Shadowrun testers). I saw some users on the Starbound boards vigorously defending the progression system - which, from what I understood, was "spend 10 hours gathering stuff in sector 1 to make a blue pickaxe, defeat boss, spend 10 hours gathering stuff in sector two to make a green pickaxe, defeat boss, spend 10 hours gathering stuff in sector 3 to make a yellow pickaxe..."

It's kind of amazing that this game sold over 1 million copies so far mostly because of its sprites.

Did I perhaps somehow make you angry? I can't see why, all I did was point out reality?

I actually said that matter-of-factly in a very calm tone. Didn't read the rest of your post, though.
Awesome. At least now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that your only reason to say that, was purely to provoke me. And that beyond attempts at provocation, you are ultimately both toothless, and worthless as far as an argument on this subject goes.

Yup. I've learned my lesson. First Wasteland 2, Then Arma3, Prison Architect and now this. Day one purchasing is a terrible idea, pre-ordering even worse and alpha pre release pre actual game purchase is the stupidest possible thing.

What gets bought in alpha, stays in alpha.

How about you dont buy early access/unfinished games if this bothers you so much?

Meanwhile Larian has been doing a great job updating/improving Divinity: Original Sin. You just chose poorly.

I'm a very strong opponent of buying games before their release date, and it seems to me that every day there come more and more retarded methods for getting people to fork over good money for what's an idea on the drawing board, at best.
Still, the industry has reached the point where Kickstarter and Early Access is the only viable choice for a small developer to even get some advertisement and funding for their game(s). Most of the games that DO get released tend to end up being average, a few are stinking piles of shit, but a few stand out and show that this model can work. Bashing unfinished games is fun for a while, but it's also a case of showing some restraint; let them finish the game first.

Of course, that restraint goes out the window if it's clear that the developers are either unwilling or unable to continue development. I'm not going to say that this is the case with Starbound... yet. But it DOES look a bit like it, right now. :-/

(Oh, and while I've never pre-ordered a game, I have bought ONE game on Early Access: Broforce. Because it's worth it even in its current state.)

I found it very funny how before beta they said we could expect patches to come swift and fast, sometimes multiple times a day and then we sometimes didn't see patches for a couple of days, sometimes weeks.

Well it has been weeks. Many weeks. The devs are probably on a beach in the Bahamas snorting coke bought with all our money by now.

I love how the forum is filed with apologists attacking anyone who complains about the lack of updates.

My favourite:

I don´t think you quite get what professionalism means when you are talking about this guy making a indie game on his free time with no sponsoring like he is a fully working studio.

Yeah, it's not like Chucklefish is a fully functioning studio, amirite? Not like they sold over a million copies making at least 15 million dorra for a game that should be very cheap to make due to no voice acting, no EXTREME cutscenes, no 3D engine and level design that is mostly procedurally generated.

Well that doenst sound too good. Still, I had over 30 hours of good fun with my friends over the game and still ocassionally start it up even in its current state. I dont considere the money as ill spent incase the project goes down.

I guess I took a bath on this one although I only paid about $7 in a Russian 4 pack. No idea why they ran out of money with a multi-million dollar self kickstarter, a Humble Bundle appearance, and early access sales on Steam.
