What's the point of not playing the game if you were already suckered in by the false promises? That was before the days of refunds and shit so what choice is there but to wait for the next update, play it again and hope it's fucking worth it this time around.

Especially if you'd already played Terraria to death and wanted something new... which many people were hoping for.

Played a couple hours last night, had fun. Still haven't gotten to the point where I can explore any of the systems so it feels primitive as hell. For example I'm carrying around potato seeds and my tutorial advisor is telling me to plant them, but I don't have farming tools yet, so I can't. This means that the early game is strictly a "climb around in caves and fight monsters" experience, and this game doesn't do that well enough on its own to be worth playing, but the promise of getting more weapons and tools, building stuff and planting crops etc. has me interested in continuing.

I had another go at Starbound with an updated version, and made the mistake of picking "Survival" difficulty instead of "Casual". Food immediately became a problem, and even though I beelined towards crafting a Hoe and a Watering Can, I still found my crops growing slower than I was eating food, and I eventually died of starvation.

As for updates to the game - the interface improved and the game is more helping at the start, but otherwise I was running into the same problem as the last time - boredom. I did find some Silver Ore this time, so progress was made.

I am heartened by the fact that the game appears to have a plot, i.e. an ending to work towards. I hear Terraria lacked direction.

To say Terraria lacks direction is to say Metroid lacks direction. No idea why you haven't gotten Terraria considering it's been $2.50 multiple times.

This seems like a game designed by people who have no idea what they are doing or what kind of game they want to make. Buggy too, I died in the Flower people dungeon and when I respawned I was on a completely different planet.

Well yeah. The faggots who made Starbound are hipster faggots who blew the money that they got from the early access on lattes, hipster shit for their new office in london, making themselves into an indie publisher and a new dog for their douchebag lead dev.

They have admitted several times that they just wanted Starbound to be done and over with and the lack of passion shows in the development of the game. Oh boy how it shows. Not only have they changed the progression process in the game several times but they've also ignored solving a lot of the glaring issues in it. Like how you have to do bullshit megaman-wannabe instanced dungeons with boring boss fights to get the magical doohikey that you need to create the next crafting station. They added those bullshit dungeons without ever stopping to think the exploration aspect of the game has some of the most vanilla, boring-ass, enemies, I've ever seen in a game like this and there is literally no threat to you what so ever when you're out grinding for the ore you need to "progress".

It's all a load of crock. Poorly implemented fluff which, at the end of the day, has less substance than the first iteration of Terarria had. And that matters because the game was supposed to be an improved version of Terraria.

Don't buy it for any price other than 2 euro. It's not fucking worth any more than that.

I still think that weird Terraria TD thing is going to end up better. If not, well, there's apparently a lot of Terraria-clones out there right now.

It's a melange of Kickstarter stretch goals -- in order to get more money they promised everything to everyone. This is how No Man's Sky is going to end up.

I have it even worse. I found 19/20 of the Cores I need to be able to leave the first planet, and then .... nothing for the next 3 hours. I've eaten all the food on the planet, with no way of creating more except to hope for drops from fighting monsters, so now the game is "explore as fast as you can before you starve to death - AGAIN - and hope you find that 20th core." The "fuck you factor" here is pretty damn high. Also the game chides me every time I die, "penalizing" me by removing 1/3 of my "pixels" which are the in-game currency ... except there's evidently no such thing as a store on the first planet, so they're worthless anyway. It can't even punish me right.

There is a store, and it makes the early game VASTLY easier since you can buy food. But also useful tools and materials just drop like mana from heavan in this new version so I got a hoe pretty early on.

Also you can skip the first mission.

Quick questions, is Terraria in its final state already or does it still get content updates?

Well, 1.3 update might be considered final, but the game is still being updated, last update was few days ago add it was more tweaks and minor stuff, next one 1.3.3 is supposed to be a underground desert expansion

I like people pointing that Starbound has no direction while praising Terraria which also don't have fucking direction

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I've eaten all the food on the planet, with no way of creating more except to hope for drops from fighting monsters.

[Emphasis mine]

That sounds massively retarded. So no way of producing more seeds like in minecraft, for instance?

And I had such hopes for this game

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
Oh, it's perfectly doable to make a hoe, till some soil and get a watering can to keep your crops moist and delicious.

You just need to craft those tools first. And they require metal bars, which need a forge and an anvil, which require more resources.

And then you have to sit around and wait for your crops to grow, but once they're ripe for harvest they tend to drop seeds so you can repeat the process.

So it's perfectly possible to eat all the food on the planet, reducing the food sources to nothing but monster drops.

As for Terraria - it's biggest flaw is that you need the massive online wiki in order to get anywhere in the game, as in-game guidance, while available, is terse and often missing a few vital steps. Any game that flat-out requires an on-line wiki to be playable is Doing It Wrong.

Eh? Not on my planet, there isn't; not unless it's miles underground. I've been around the entire surface of the world.
As soon as you beam down to the seekrit base through the first gate, it's there. Technically I suppose it's on one of the moons not the planet itself. But since you can access it without moving the ship it's as good as being on the planet. Easier to reach too because you can beam directly there.

Food is very easy to get after repairing the ship. Just find a planet with rainy weather and plant crops. Actually you should probably start on such planet.

Before repairing the ship you can buy some food in a shop. If you still haven't unlocked that there usually are are some merchants on the planet surface.

Worst case scenario you have to make 2 crafting stations and craft a bow which makes enemies drop food about half of the time.

As for the core fragments - I believe the starting planet is guaranteed to have a mining complex dungeon with core fragments in most containers. Near the surface entrance to this dungeon you can find an NPC which tells you this. When fully explored it gave me about 30 of them.

To get more cores you can mine deep on any planet. When you get near the lava level you start seeing lots of these.

My biggest issue with the game is that gameplay wise there's not much to it. Once you realize how things work it's just:
1) Get the best ores from the current planet.
2) Create crafting stations and armor (later on also EPP) from the ores.
3) Move to planet of the next tier.

Rinse and repeat. Also there are only 6 tiers with the only difference being higher stats.

Currently I'm at the last tier after about 2 days and I'm already killing everything in 1-2 hits on the highest threat planets. Zero challenge. Haven't done many story missions because meh. Otherwise the game seems finished from the sandbox progression perspective.
