What I don't like about 3D rts is that they feel so "soft". There is hardly any punch when units shoot at each other. Feels like rubber shooting at rubber, old school RTS is hard steel meeting speeding lead. Total Annihilation is the only exception I can think of but that isn't completely 3D. So I hope StarCraft RM can avoid it.

Starcraft 1.18 has been released on the PTR:
https://us.battle.net/forums/en/starcraft/topic/20753915707

Greetings Commanders,

We're looking for your help with final testing before this warpig goes live. Please use this thread to report any issues.

We've made a build available for PTR (just unzip and run starcraft.exe): https://d8un0y0mnd29o.cloudfront.net/public/Starcraft+1.18+PTR+1202.zip

You will need to create a PTR account to play online.

Known Issues on PTR:

The PTR server is based in California, so you may experience lag depending on your geographic location.
Having addons such as wLauncher, Chaos Plugin, or others running will cause a crash. We recommend uninstalling addons to play 1.18.
Some players may experience a pause when selecting multiplayer. The issue is firewall related. If you do encounter a pause, please report how long the pause lasted, your system specs, and what firewall was triggered here.
Some computers' firewalls will prompt to whitelist SC on every game launch when entering multiplayer.
Players cannot create private games with a non English password.
Vespene geyser has a graphical issue.
UTF-8 not supported in chat channels.

Looking forward to the much improved compatibility with Windows 7. I'll check it out right after finding my cat, whom previous version sold to a Korean

Yeah, how much worse was the compatibility before on W7 x64?

"fixed issue where Starcraft would accidentally email a list of all pornographic videos watched in the past week to all email contacts when started on W7 x64"

Oh well thanks for that much needed fix Blizzard.

En Taro Adun Commanders,

A big thank you to everyone helping with 1.18 on the test realm. We appreciate your help in testing this update.

As we promised, this is an effort to not be disruptive, and to ensure updates will either maintain or improve this game that you love. Playing and feedback on the test realm has been invaluable to that end.

Patch 1.18 will need to be pushed back at least another week from now, but the PTR will remain available for free. Thank you for taking this first big step with us, and we look forward to continuing the journey with you by our side.

Before we extend beyond the Public Test Realm, we want to incorporate the feedback we’ve received from the community. Specific topics we’re evaluating and working on:

Chat Channels
  • Timeouts
  • Missing social functions and unexpected behavior (Friend commands, ignore, etc)
  • Updated chat channel aesthetic (Background, chat colors, etc)

Create Game
  • Updating latency controls to improve game responsiveness (was defaulted to L2)

Find Game
  • Filtering by game type

Lobby
  • Moving player position
  • Locking Observer by default

System
  • Reported input sluggishness
  • Crash reports from 64-bit OS configurations
  • Reported latency issues
  • Maps not downloading to completion
  • Setting FPS to 200

More to come, and we look forward to the next round of feedback with you.

Cheers,
Pete

Patch delayed by a week, but free beta PTR is available to everybody. So, it's out but it's not out at the same time.

I actually played a couple games on the PTR last night and it was reasonably okay, however a lot of people have been reporting issues. At least they were open about this and have shown they're reading their forums. They also make it sound like they're going to be fixing/altering issues or concerns with the way the new battle.net looks and functions, and that what we see in PTR isn't final.

Greetings Commanders,

We're happy to announce an update to the StarCraft PTR. If you have the existing PTR build, it will update when connecting to Battle.net. A complete download is required.

We recommend deleting the old PTR directory and installing fresh.

The stand alone installers are here:
https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?version=PTR&gameProgram=STARCRAFT

Details on the update:

Specific Changes & Improvements
  • The Mac *Beta* available for 10.11 and up
  • Updated the background image for Chat Channels
  • Filter by Game Type available in the Join Game screen
  • Increased the password length allowance
  • FPS cap set to 200
  • Text size has been reduced in several panels to better utilize space
  • Up to 256 messages are saved per Chat session, and are displayed in grey text when navigating back to the Chat Channel
  • Chat colors are now unique based on source type: whisper is pink, channel is dark blue, info is yellow, emote is orange, join channel is green, old messages are grey
  • Message prefixes, such as Usernames, in the chat log appear as a darker color than their message
  • Players can respond to a whisper in both the UI menus and the Game Client with the command ‘/r’
  • Attempting to reset the hotkeys will prompt the user with a confirmation panel
  • Game information no longer covers multiple lines
  • Private and Replay icons now appear beside the player count
  • Expanded crash report logging to improve troubleshooting

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed various crashes
  • Fixed mouse speed in windowed mode
  • Fixed an issue with players disconnecting after inputting Korean characters
  • Navigation buttons and hotkeys have returned to parity with 1.16 values
  • Fixed map downloads getting stuck in game lobby

Known Issues
  • UTF-8 is not supported in Chat Channels; work is required to update the legacy chat system
  • Hotkey configurations still undergoing iteration
  • Group selection hotkeys 6 and 8 are not functional on AZERTY keyboards; being fixed for next build

We'll see you on the battlefield, and please use this thread for bugs and feedback.

Cheers,
Pete

Edit: Added bug fix for map downloads

Mostly improvements on Battle.net itself. However, an FPS cap was added, key re-mapping was improved slightly, and maps supposedly actually fucking download now ontop of the gametype filter being re-implemented in the open games list.

This is pretty fantastic. Even if the remastered version is crap, which it doesn't look like it will be, having the original for free is just awesome.

Not bad. Perhaps Blizzard was, for once, thinking clearly when they handed this off to another dev team to remaster.

I would not be surprised if this gets delayed. Based on the teamliquid thread, there are a lot bugs and tweaks Blizzard needs to sort out.

I never thought I would say this, but I hope Blizzard adds new features to the campaign, as opposed to a 1:1 remaster. Specifically, I would love it if Blizzard could add difficulty settings to the campaign (probably easier said than done). The early Terran and Protoss campaign missions would be great with a little more difficulty.

Oh man! Don't know how I missed this. Absolutely. BW's campaigns are way too easy. Especially the Zerg campaigns. You can beat every single mission, from the first map of Episode 2 to the last map of Episode 6, with the exact same strategy: Mass Hydras. Terran and Protoss campaigns aren't much better. I find the Terran campaigns the hardest, actually, but that could easily just be because I'm a terrible T player. Also because I generally go mech but trying to coax all those Goliaths and Siege Tanks across the map makes it feel more like babysitting.

It would be great, but I can see why it is not a priority and/or it would be more trouble than it is worth. Regardless, I will be satisfied with the extra campaign missions (Enslavers?), with the rogue Dark Templar. I found those missions legitimately hard back then, especially the mission with the EMP machine that would wipe out your entire Protoss army's shields every 3-5 minutes. Plus, it is the first Blizzard campaign I can remember that had split missions based on who you sided with.

It's funny, on one hand I think of SC2 having a much better difficulty level, yet on the other hand you can beat the Terran campaign there by just spamming marines. On less than the max difficulty it isn't even very challenging to do so.

True, but typically you had to micro the marines, which could be entertaining in certain missions. Plus, the flyer variant of the last mission of WoL on brutal difficulty was...brutal.

With SCBW, most of the missions were a breeze, especially if you just took your time. The exception being the Enslaver mission where you had to fight the Torrasque. With the bonus campaigns, I believe Blizzard put more effort into the mission designs.

True, but you can do the same with the Terran campaigns in BW. The absence of Medics hurts in Ep 1, but at the same time, you're not up against anything particularly scary.

There's no reason if you don't give a shit about modernised servers with restored full-time support and proper matchmaking (I.E you're one of those campaignfags that barely played the actual game)

edit: Oh yeah, and having the game actually run on your computer if you feel like upgrading and having an OS on it that is more recent than Windows XP. But that'll be coming in the "original non-remastered game is free for everybody" patch.
