I stopped playing after Arcade Edition when they nerfed Rose and introduced a bunch of dumb divekick characters. None of the new characters have really done it for me in the newer expansions. It's still fun to watch the big tournaments, though.

But fighting games are my favorite genre behind RPGs. I love how much gameplay you can get out of the sticker price, and how you can always step up your game a little further. I've been having local Smash Bros fight nights with some of my buddies every other week or so, it's been good fun. Even the ladies are starting to get the hang of it. Not that I think it's the Codex's particular cup of tea.

Rose topped the tiers on Ultra release, she's stronk but got the nerf after EVO. Still, even at high level play you find top 8 composed of 7-8 different characters this days. Tier whoring is pointless, just play.

What bugged me was that in SSF4 she wasn't that amazing other than her instantaneous Ultra 2, which got nerfed along with an update that introduced powerful and popular divekick twins. I always struggled against divekicks and suddenly they were the new flavor of the month... I'm sure the balance has shifted a lot since I played, but at the time it was a perfect storm of an unsatisfying update and UMVC3 coming out which I ended up enjoying a lot more.

I generally don't care about playing a character because of a high tier placement. But I do kind of like playing the underdog characters.

Yeah the twins dropped hard. They were severely overpowered until they got nerfed into oblivion, but that was almost 2 years ago. After the nerf it was all Cammy and Fei Long pressure. That rushdown age is now over, and thank god for that. It almost killed the game.

Ever since Combofied took over Capcom's FG department, patching has become more on the lines of other modern games like Mortal Kombat, where one drops every few months. ANd they ask people for stuff, instead of patching stuff in the void of Japanese arcades.

Marvel is dead now due to one-hit kills across the board and a stale metageme where Doom-Vergil tops most tournaments.

I love me some street fighter (by far my favorite game to watch pros play).

Personally, I'm shit though. Terrible execution, can't even pull off so called "bread and butter" combos consistently. Feels like it takes too much work just to get to an acceptable level of play. Any shortcuts to good execution?

I would like to play SF4 on PC.

Unfortunately, I have that annoying bug where pressing "start" for player 1 on the keyboard will always be interpreted as player 2 also pressing start, meaning I cannot play the main campaign without constantly inviting a nonexistent player 2 into the game. Makes it unplayable.

Anyone got a fix for this? Apart from "omg u bai controllerz noob."

I think I've done a FADC into Ultra a total of... like twice with Ken in a real match. And 1-frame links? Forget about it.

It's part of the reason I gravitate more towards FGs with a lesser execution requirement, i.e. Marvel, Soul Calibur and Smash. Games that rely more on reads than being able to perform elaborate muscle memory combos.

Don't like games that cover the screen in effects (Marvel), 3d fighters, and Smash Bros is like almost a different genre.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

That's it, we're starting our own Codex Divekick + Lethal League Tournament for execution tryhards. Because god knows I can't do those B&B either but I love me some FG.

SF4 is a bit deceptive in that it makes some things incredibly easy (massive hitstun on jump-in attacks for easy combos, input shortcuts up the wazoo) while having the ceiling be incredibly high even by fighting game standards (there are a number of character's whose "bread and butter" combos are 1-frame links).

If you have problems with execution my advice would be:
-Simply practice. Devote a few hours out of your week hitting the training room, making sure you can do your specials and combos on each side of the screen.
-Check the controller you're using is right for you. I wouldn't bother trying to play a fighting game with a xbox controller due to its terrible dpad. It's doable with a dualshock, though I'm personally not a fan as I get thumb cramps with it after prolonged used. If you really want to go into fighting games you can get a fightstick (though its not mandatory). I also quite like the madcatz "fightpad" as I find them to be the comfiest controller to use, though I know some people feel mixed about them.
-Check your display. Make sure your display is set to 60hz, since most fighting games run at 60fps, and playing on different displays (say from playing from your tv to your pc) can throw off muscle memory for combos.
-Pick a character that doesn't require heavy execution. Play characters that specialise in mind games like grapplers, or zoning characters where you can focus on keeping your opponent out. Granted its SF4 so they'll still probably have daft combos to learn, but it'll be less important for their gameplan.
-Try a different game. SF4 can create bad habits due to how lenient it is with inputs. I noticed my execution took a noticeable improvement when I went to play KoF for a while before coming back
