Well, at least some Codexers will be happy to hear that Eidos Montreal isn't going under after all, as that wouldn't be too surprising given the latest DE's middling sales and the utter failure of their Thief reboot before that.

So what will this be exactly? The press release says jack shit besides confirming they want to milk the license with multiple games. Supposedly there is a story and singleplayer.

Initially I thought they might do team-based online something but the story bit and iconic moments contradicts that. Unless they go for some kind of objective-based gameplay with maps/scenarios inspired by the franchise.

If they make an AC-type game, it will be just another example of Marvel copying DC.

After lack luster Thief 2014 sales and lack luster Deus Ex Mankind Divided sales I guess rather then shut the team down they're going to be working on marvel games now?

The Crystal Dynamics Avengers Project is a third-person game with stealth and melee

Crystal Dynamics and Marvel's forthcoming Avengers game will be a "third-person cover-based action adventure game" with "stealth, player weapons and tools, cover and melee-based mechanics."

This is according to a job advertisement posted by Crystal Dynamics, seeking a combat systems designer to join the design team "working on the 'Avengers Project'."

Until now, we didn't know what genre the Avengers game would be. A third-person action adventure with cover, stealth, melee, and a range of weapons and gadgets is not a massive surprise, however - the Avengers is all about an eclectic team of superheroes with different abilities working together, and if the game is going to reflect that, it'll need lots of different gameplay systems. It's easy to imagine Black Widow or Hawkeye using stealth and cover, while Hulk and Thor get involved in melee, for instance.

Avengers' Creed, I see.

Does this mean the next Tomb Raider isn't being developed by Crystal Dynamics? That might be good.

This year marks Crystal Dynamics’ 25th anniversary! Embracing a diverse staff of the industry’s best, many of whom have been tenured for over 15 years, our studio has developed and published over 30 award-winning titles. Surely having talented staff is more fucking important?

They wrote a press release to answer your question:

CRYSTAL DYNAMICS EXPANDS STUDIO WITH TOP INDUSTRY TALENT

Crystal Dynamics®, the renowned developer of the critically acclaimed and world-famous TOMB RAIDER® franchise, which has sold over 63 million copies globally, today announced they continue to expand their award-winning studio by adding 15 top industry talent to their development team in January alone. Included in the group are former Naughty Dog Creative Director Shaun Escayg who joins The Avengers Project as Creative Director, and as Director of Production Stephen Barry, a 27 year Veteran from EA/Visceral Games.

Escayg served as the Creative Director and writer of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and led the cinematics team as the Director of Photography and Animation Supervisor on The Last of Us . In addition, he worked as an animator at Industrial Light & Magic. “I’m thrilled to join Crystal as Creative Director and be aligned with a team as passionate about telling great character based stories as I am.”

Barry held multiple positions at Electronic Arts and was formerly the Director of Product Development at Visceral Games, working on several games over his long career including the critically acclaimed Dead Space franchise. “Crystal’s been around almost as long as I’ve been in the business. The immediate chemistry and camaraderie has been exactly what I’d hoped for.”

“We’re committed to delivering an incredible, completely original Avengers experience to our gamers, and that means we are always looking to add amazing developers to our existing best in class studio talent,” said Scot Amos, Co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “As development progresses, our studio continues to grow. The tremendous progress we’ve made on The Avengers project further drives us toward our goal of crafting something all Marvel fans will be proud of, and will play for years to come. We can’t wait to show you what we mean in the future.”

“We recently hired fifteen world-renowned industry veterans, spanning production leadership, animation, design, art and engineering, who have previously worked on games such as Batman: Arkham Origins, Dead Space, Star Wars: Battlefront and many more.” said Ron Rosenberg, Co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “Their AAA experience adds to an already deep roster, making us well-positioned to deliver on the ambitious goals we’ve set for ourselves with The Avengers project. It’s a stellar addition of many people who fit incredibly well into our wheelhouse of building game experiences we all love.”

Crystal Dynamics has developed and published over 30 award-winning titles during its 25-year adventure. Some of the most beloved franchises include Gex®, Legacy of Kain® and most recently, TOMB RAIDER.

The only comic book game I'd be interested in at the moment would be a Scud: The Disposable Assassin game made by Platinum Games or some other talented studio.

Even more beefing up:

CRYSTAL DYNAMICS EXPANDS WITH WORLD CLASS TALENT AND NEW BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON STUDIO

Crystal Dynamics®, the renowned developer of the critically acclaimed and world-famous TOMB RAIDER® franchise, is expanding with key new hires at its Redwood Shores headquarters and the creation of a new Bellevue, Washington satellite studio: Crystal Northwest™.

“We’re aggressively scaling up our teams and adding a new studio with spectacular talent to deliver the ultimate gaming experiences for our players,” said Scot Amos, Co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “We have assembled a team of industry veterans and leaders in order to create gaming experiences that surpass the expectations of our passionate community.”

The new studio in the Seattle area is officially up and running as of today, and is a full-fledged extension of Crystal Dynamics. Dedicated initially to technology development, it delivers even more expertise to the highly-anticipated Avengers Project. Led by 20-year industry veterans Chad Queen and James Loe, the new studio bolsters the development of future games, tools, and technology.

In addition to the new studio, Crystal Dynamics has added best-in-class development talent to its Redwood Shores, California headquarters. These new additions will strengthen the teams on both current and future projects.

Among the dozens of new hires are world-class developers like Vincent Napoli, the new Lead Combat Designer at Crystal Dynamics who was most recently on the latest God of War, plus Ben Wanat, an 18-year industry veteran and an original co-founder of the Dead Space franchise, who led the development of Dead Space 3 as Creative Director. Joining them is David Fifield, who sports 20 years of experience as Executive Producer and Design Director at 343 Industries on Halo, as well as Game Director at Raven Software on numerous Call of Duty titles. Crystal Dynamics continues to attract the best and the brightest talent across all disciplines, many recently hailing from the likes of Naughty Dog, Pixar, EA, and many more.

“Our new studio in Bellevue, and the new hires in Redwood Shores, represent our continued commitment to the most ambitious project we’ve ever created,” said Ron Rosenberg, Co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “We’ll keep building on the exciting growth Crystal Dynamics has experienced over the last several years, and are eager to deliver a world-class Avengers experience for fans around the world.”

I still think a Captain America game could be pretty damn good.

Like I said in the Spider-Man PS4 thread:

Anyway. A Captain America video game, now that would be pretty fucking cool. The amount of variation it could have with levels and enemies is fantastic - from WW2, modern day battlefields and military bases to hi-tech facilities and alien spaceships/planets; regular humans with normal or futuristic weapons, super powered beings and supernatural creatures. And the gameplay due to Cap's abilities could have it all: shooting, parkour, hand-to-hand combat, sneaking and espionage, while at the same time remaining challenging since Steve Roger's is still just a man.

Alas no Dev nowadays is that creative and competent to make a decent game from this.

And the same could be said for Iron Man.
