13 Things You Need to Know About The Evil Within 2

Sebastian Castellanos has had a decidedly rough past few years. His family fell apart, he lost his job, and he was trapped in a lethal hellscape created inside of a serial killer’s mind. And life isn’t yet done kicking him while he’s down. In The Evil Within 2, he’s been offered the chance to right the greatest wrong in his life and save his family, but he’ll have to step back into the nightmare in order to do so. Get caught up on the story here, and see the full rundown of everything there is to know (so far) about The Evil Within 2 below.

1. Mobius is back, and it’s still super evil

After three years of eluding Sebastian, the true main antagonist from the first game is making its comeback. Mobius is a powerful yet shadowy corporation that says their goal is to bring peace and order to the world. They hope their mysterious STEM device, which allows for a shared consciousness experience by connecting human minds in an alternate world created using one Core brain, holds the key to this “peace and order.” However, their true motives have so far remained a mystery – one that Sebastian is determined to unravel as he explores the new STEM world, Union.

2. Small town, big mysteries

“Union is the world that Mobius has created within STEM using Lily’s mind as the Core,” says Game Director John Johanas. “At a glance, it resembles a small rural town, but once inside, Sebastian realizes this place is anything but peaceful. What actually happened in Union and the purpose it was meant to serve are just some of the mysteries you will have to solve while exploring the world.”

3. You’ll need to dust off your detective skills

Sebastian’s daughter Lily, who he had believed to have been dead for years, has actually been in Mobius’ clutches and is now missing inside of STEM. In order to find her, Sebastian will need to brush the cobwebs off his detective shield and use every skill at his disposal to better understand the world he finds himself trapped in. That’s where Sebastian’s new communicator device comes in. It allows him to maintain a connection with the real world, via his former protégé Juli Kidman, as well as learn more about Union and the situation there.

4. Unravel the mysteries of Union

“Sebastian’s communicator allows him to keep in contact with Kidman, but due to the instability within STEM, it will also allow him to pick up Resonances of past events that have occurred with Union,” explains Johanas. “The communicator can be used to track down mission objectives as well as lead you to stories about events that have happened inside STEM.”

When Sebastian locates one of the Resonance points, the information it reveals will help him piece together the story of what happened to Union, and maybe lead him to some helpful resources.

5. You’re not (necessarily) alone

Sebastian isn’t alone in Union, and even though he might not think that’s a good thing at first (he’s not on the best terms with Mobius), the Mobius agents he encounters will be crucial to his journey.

“Within STEM, Sebastian will have to seek out survivors in Union who can provide him with information,” says Johanas. “Sebastian can interact with these people and learn about side objectives in the world, as well as new locations to explore and find resource caches. They also all provide some new insight into the horrors occurring in the world.”

6. Explore at your own pace…

The Evil Within 2 offers much more flexible pacing than its predecessor, and the non-linear nature of the world will allow you to do as much or as little exploring as you’d like. How you choose to play the game – whether you race through the world with guns blazing, or stalk quietly through the shadows while conserving ammo and finding every single hidden feature – is completely up to you.

“Early on, the game opens up with some big maps and provides you with options on how to survive,” explains Johanas. “There are side objectives to accomplish, and in order to stand a chance against the horrors waiting for you, you’ll want to do some exploring. We’re giving you the opportunity to scour the world for whatever weapons and supplies are left, but it’s up to you how much hunting you want to do.”

7. … But prepare wisely

“This is a survival horror game and resources are very scarce, but this time we have a crafting system that will enable you to craft ammunition for the weapons you want to use or you think will be the most valuable for encounters,” Johanas says.

TEW2_13Things_Crossbow_730x411.png

You’ll still find ammo as you explore the world, but specific resources are randomized, so you can’t depend on finding what you want, when you need it. With the addition of the crafting system, you won’t be fully reliant on what you can hunt down on the streets on Union, which will give you more freedom to play how you want.

8. It’s a race against time

“When Sebastian first sets foot in Union, he learns that something has gone wrong and Union is collapsing in on itself,” says Producer Shinsaku Ohara. “In the midst of this chaos, Sebastian will be forced to make his way through the horrific domains created by killers who have staked their own claim in STEM. On top of having to deal with them and the monstrous creatures that litter the world, Sebastian will be confronted by his own fears and will have to find a way to overcome them.”

The state of Union is a reflection of Lily’s mental state. Sebastian will need to track her down and save her before Union completely breaks apart.

9. New faces of evil

Along with the creepy crawlies roaming the streets of Union, you’ll have to deal with a (perhaps even creepier) human element, which Ohara-san mentioned above. You got your first look at the killers who have carved out their own little slice of STEM in our cinematic announce trailer: Stefano, the flashy photographer with a proclivity for “unconventional” beauty, and Theodore, whom we’ll have more details on in the coming months.

10. The stuff of nightmares

Stefano and Theodore both have their own creatures to help carry out their will in Union. Born from Stefano’s twisted obsession with the artistry of death, Obscura’s design could almost be called elegant… if you had the same aesthetics as Stefano. Of course, that’s just one of the creatures you’ll encounter in The Evil Within 2.

TEW2_13Things_Obscura_730x411.png

11. Internal trauma

In addition to the signature enemies (we’ll have more to say about Theodore’s later) and the more common enemies you’ll see inhabiting the town, Sebastian will have to deal with his own personal demons in Union.

“As if dealing with Stefano, Theodore and the denizens of Union isn’t enough, Sebastian’s own personal traumas from his past will be something that haunt him on his journey,” says Johanas.

12. All are welcome

If you’re worried about being able to jump right into The Evil Within 2, don’t be. Despite having a deep story, The Evil Within 2 fully stands on its own and welcomes new players into the fold. Both returning fans and newcomers to the series will be able to dive right in and enjoy everything The Evil Within 2 has to offer, though those who are new to the series may find themselves wanting to go back and play the original after finishing The Evil Within 2 to learn even more about Sebastian and his troubled past.

13. It comes out on Friday the 13th

The Evil Within 2 launches worldwide on Friday the 13th in October 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Could there be a better launch date for a survival horror game?

The 'it was a dream' tier plot twist may make you stop caring about the game, but other than that the combat is alright.

Pretty much more of the same. I really liked the first one tho, so I'm fine with it.

I tried to like it but 40 FOV made game impossible for me to play. Quit it like hour after i started it.

I'm very happy that they improved the field of view in the sequel. It's still close, because it's trying to create that sense of tension, but it's not ridiculous anymore.

The Evil Within 2 is the game I'm most looking forward to. I just hope it can live up to Mikami's games without his direction. The director of Evil Within 2 made the Kidman DLCs for the first game, which weren't that good.

The Evil Within 2 – Customizing Your Experience

Fight or flee. Creep quietly through the world, a silent killer with a mission – or set traps and lure enemies to their deaths. In The Evil Within 2, you can carefully plan your every move. And all the while, you’ll have special customization options for both Sebastian and your gear that will help you play the way you want on your mission to save your daughter. With larger areas and a heavier emphasis on player choice, you’ll have even more options to choose how you’ll survive when you descend into the nightmare.

“The world of The Evil Within 2 is full of possibilities,” says Game Director John Johanas. “With some of the larger stages we’ve created, we’re opening Union up to the players’ wishes and unique playstyles. Through the layout of the world, as well as the crafting and customization systems in the game, we’re providing you with the freedom to take on the challenges in front of you however you choose.”

You may have more agency, but this is still a survival horror game. You won’t be able to turn Sebastian into an invincible killing machine. You can make him hardier, faster, and “sneakier”… however, you’ll still need to be smart. You’ll never be safe in Union, but you can be prepared to face whatever awaits you at your own pace.

TEW2_Customization_StefanoStealth_730x411.png

Who Is Your Sebastian?
Customizing both Sebastian and your preferred gear is more flexible this time around. Green Gel is no longer required to customize both Sebastian and your weapons, so you won’t have to agonize over which you want to spend your hard-earned resources on. The Gel will be used solely for upgrading Sebastian, while Weapon Parts will be used to upgrade your arsenal.

Customization for Sebastian breaks down into five categories, which include parameter upgrades like “recover more health from healing items” and “reduce reticle sway when firing weapons.” You can also unlock special abilities, but these will cost you a significant amount of Green Gel. For example, if you’re investing in the Combat tree, you could unlock an ability called Bullet Cascade, which will (temporarily) increase shooting damage with each consecutive shot. Bullet Cascade ends when either the time is up or you’re out of ammo. These abilities are active skills that could make your trip through Union just a hair easier if you’re willing to save up the resources required to unlock them while potentially sacrificing other important passive upgrades.

TEW2_Customization_TakingAim_730x411.png

Upgrades for Sebastian include (but are certainly not limited to):
  • Health – Dropping some Green Gel in the Health tree will give you the chance to survive an attack that might have otherwise killed you. This is also how you increase Sebastian’s Life Gauge.
  • Stealth – In addition to an increased movement speed while crouching, the Stealth tree can allow you to perform Sneak Kills from around a corner while in cover.
  • Combat – If you’re building a more rough-and-tumble Sebastian, the Combat tree will help you increase the damage of your melee attacks and decrease the kickback when firing weapons, among other upgrades.
  • Recovery – The Recovery tree is for players who know how tough surviving this nightmare is going to be for Sebastian. Upgrades here include an increased health recovery speed when regenerating from near-death status, and the chance to automatically use a Medical Syringe when taking fatal damage.
  • Athleticism – For the Sebastian on the go, the Athleticism upgrade options will let you increase your Stamina Gauge and give you a chance to auto-avoid certain types of incoming attacks.
TEW2_Customization_StreetStampede_730x411.png

Within the weapon customization options for gear like your handgun and shotgun, you’ll be able to tweak your firepower, ammo capacity, reload time and fire rate. All of which could save your hide in a tight spot.

The Warden Crossbow has an entirely different set of upgrades, though it still requires Weapon Parts. You can spend those parts on increasing the crossbow’s range and decreasing the time it takes to fully aim the weapon, in addition to changing the parameters for the specific types of bolts used in the crossbow. You’ll likely come to favor certain types of bolts over others, whether you’re a fan of the distraction and stun factor offered by the Shock and Smoke Bolts, or you like the destructive capabilities of the Harpoon and Explosive Bolts.

Craft Your Way Out
Once you’ve picked your preferred weapons and exploration style, you’ll be able to focus your crafting on keeping you stocked up on what you need the most.

“Our crafting system lets you craft ammunition for the weapons that you like,” says Johanas. “You don’t have to rely solely on what you can scrounge up in the world. Again, it’s that emphasis on letting people play how they want to play. But it all comes back around to how much you explore and how many resources you can track down.”

TEW2_Customization_CreepyUnion_730x411.png

The items you gather as you explore the world can be taken back to a workbench (either in a safe house, or one you find on its own in Union) and turned into ammo for your various weapons, as well as healing supplies. There will be ammo for you to find in the world, but it’s rare and might not be for your preferred weapons. In a pinch, you can craft on the fly if you absolutely need to, though it will cost more resources than crafting at a workbench.

“You can customize your experience to prepare yourself for what’s waiting for you, but there’s danger around every corner in Union,” says Johanas. And key to that danger is the fact that you don’t know what’s lurking around the next corner. “Horror, for me, is always about the sense of mystery you feel, and how you can never fully grasp what’s going on,” Johanas adds. “When you finally get your hands on The Evil Within 2, there’s this deep mystery about the world and about these characters, and especially about Sebastian, that you’ll only really uncover as you go further and take on some of these enemies or go searching through the world. Sebastian has to explore this new world with no knowledge of what’s going on; he just knows he has to save his daughter and that’s really all that matters to him.”

From a gameplay perspective the first one did loads right, but was ultimately too clunky, frustrating & too cheap too often for me to play through to completion.

From a story perspective it started off very intruiging, but ultimately lost lots of gravitas & emotional weight when everything you were fighting was revealed to be a "dream"

Not sure how going back into the dream is even remotely compelling? "Oh look, more zombies which only exist in the character's head". The original had that air of nightmarishness to start with as you constantly wondered "WTF is going on?". But knowing that from the start? Seems like it's gonna be an Ass Creed style fuck up tbh.

Oh gee, another "play how you want" action/stealth hybrid with upgrade system. Call me crazy but I prefer it when games actually know what the fuck they want to be and focus on doing that right.

I think it's fine if the customization options will be hard choices, ie if you focus too much on stealth abilities, then you will be fucked in combat. But tis no immersive sim, so yeah.

The Evil Within 2 – Stefano and Obscura

Not only will Sebastian have to contend with the myriad horrific creatures waiting for him in The Evil Within 2, he’ll also have to deal with the human “monsters” who have made their way into the new STEM world. Wretched creatures like Stefano Valentini, an artist with dark proclivities and unbounded imagination. You’ll see examples of his work scattered throughout Union – from grisly photographs of his victims, to the “moment of death” tableaus he creates, capturing the last seconds of a person’s life in a tangible, looping scene. Learn more about the man behind the art in the latest story trailer for The Evil Within 2.

After losing his eye in an explosion during his time as a war photographer, Stefano rapidly descended into madness. His newfound “vision” drove him to become fascinated by the precise instant when death takes a person – that split second in time when people are, in his opinion, at their most open and most beautiful. Stefano returned home from the war with a newfound purpose. But he wouldn’t wait for these perfect moments to arise on their own. Why should he, when he could orchestrate those final breaths?

TEW2_Stefano_Rebirth_730x411.jpg

“Stefano is a passionate adherent of beauty in all its shapes and forms, and it shows in his artwork,” says Keita Sakai, Lead Concept Artist. “In the real world, however, ignorant masses would find some of his ideas of beauty unpalatable. For him, Union is a haven, a perfect canvas granting him the power of unbridled creation, with no one to distract him from his pursuit of artistic perfection. He is always single-mindedly focused on searching for the perfect medium for his next masterpiece, something to bring him ever closer to pure artistic perfection. For his next project, he has set his eyes on Lily, the Core of Union. And when Stefano sets his eyes on something, nothing will stand in his way.”

TEW2_Stefano_MomentofDeath_730x411.jpg

And he’s not alone in his endeavors. Born from an untethered and immoral imagination and sculpted from blood and bone and flesh, Obscura is one of Stefano’s greatest masterpieces.

“Stefano’s old spring-wound camera was one of his favorite toys in his collection, and now he’s decorated it with a beautiful tripod,” explains Sakai. “The love and affection that Stefano has poured into the camera have become a manifestation of his power, breathing life into Obscura and giving it a will of its own. To Stefano, Obscura is a living work of art, in addition to being his beloved pet. If you see pictures scattered around Union, chances are that some of them were taken by Obscura herself.”

The Evil Within 2 will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Friday the 13th this October.

Another horror game that seems to forsake creativity for clichés and adrenaline. Again.
I rate this post "Meh"...

There wasn't much original about the first on either, but it was still pretty good at what it did.
