How hard is it to map specifically like that? Do you have a steam software with accessible inputs like generating circles on the screen for trackpad regions and stuff. Or is it all cryptic coding and user generated content.

Once you connect a Steam controller, Steam will have an extra Steam controller section in the Steam UI when launching each game. So the caveat here is that the controller functions just as a mouse and keyboard on exiting Steam. To get all the fancy customization options, Steam needs to be running.

It looks like this:

In the above screen, pressing 'X' will allow you to check out any developer created profiles along with the community created ones (which display the most used profiles at the top of the list).

Setting up mouse regions is far less daunting than it sounds. The second picture shows what happens if one wants to change the left trackpad from a traditional dpad to a mouse region, and the associated settings. There's an option that shows the mouse region in game, so one can get the positioning just right.

Can't you just get a refund if you don't like it, like a game? Would be p. ironic if you couldn't.

The Steam controller sucks. It was a good concept in theory but the execution has been bad. I have faith it can get better over time but as of now it's not worth buying.

PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I have two lying around that I don't use but shipping to yurp might not be worth it

Best controller ever. I've already programmed 2 profiles - one for Neverwinter Nights and one for Ember. People are sleeping on this controller, it's amazing, IMO.

Weird? Maybe at first. After using it a bit I feel like my mouse is weird in comparison. :D

The trackpads feel REALLY good. The mouse with trackball mode on the right trackpad is just a thing of beauty. I also put camera movement on the left trackpad in my NWN configuration and it is great. You can do neat things like change the tilt of the camera by just touching up/down, yet if you click and hold you can zoom in and out. I love it.

I love mine! It's weird as hell and you just can't approach it like a normal controller. The ability to go through the community's controller mappings is AMAZING when you aren't great at mapping your own controls.

If you plan on playing GOG games or old-school RPGs, etc., I'd recommend programming the controller yourself. It definitely pays to learn it a bit. :)

Note - I say learn to program it yourself because games like NWN, Wizardry 8, and most likely a bunch of old-school GOG RPGs that aren't on Steam or aren't heavily followed are probably not going to have a bunch of configurations to choose from. Relying on community configs for popular games seems alright, but if you want to play the obscure games you may have to be the first to share a configuration and make it yourself.
