Valve approves uncensored hentai game for Steam
In hot water.

Last week, Valve unveiled new content filters for Steam to give users the "tools to find the games [they] want, as well as avoid the things [they] don't". It seems this update has paved the way for more adult content, as a hentai game has now been approved for uncensored release on Steam.

The game in question, Negligee: Love Stories, was originally approved for release on the condition it censored hardcore sex scenes. Players who wanted to view the full sexual content previously had to download external patches to do so.

According to developer Dharker Studios, the game was recently submitted for review following Valve's content filter update, and has now been approved for uncensored release on the 15th of September.

This comes in the wake of Valve's June announcement it would "allow everything on Steam" apart from "straight up trolling". The new laissez-faire approach was partly a response to the outcry surrounding Valve's approval of Active Shooter (a school-shooting simulator), along with accusations Valve was trying to censor adult visual novels on the platform. The approval of Negligee: Love Stories seems to suggest Valve continues to view "allow[ing] everything" as a way to avoid this sort of criticism.

Despite this new approach, Valve still lists pornography as one of the things "you shouldn't publish on Steam". From looking at Negligee: Love Stories' Kickstarter page, and its Steam store description, it appears the game contains some hardcore sex scenes. This therefore raises questions about what Valve defines as pornography.

But how, exactly, does Valve's filtering system work with content like this?

It's worth noting that extreme mature content only appears in the Steam store if users tick an option called "adult only sexual content" in their Steam preferences. Users also automatically receive pop-up warnings when they click on content that contains violence or sexual content. Again, users can opt-out of this feature in Steam preferences.

Negligee: Love Stories currently has a pop-up adult content warning, but strangely no age warning.

Steam's parental controls, however, seem ill-equipped to deal with the new mature content. The family view mode leaves parents only one way to block children from accessing sexual games on the Steam store, which is to turn off access to the store entirely. There isn't an option to block certain types of games in the store - the filtering system only hides them from Steam store lists. It's still possible for children to click on unfiltered results to see the NSFW games, and they can easily click through to view the sexual game pages.

Response to the uncensored game's approval has been mixed. On ResetEra, some praised the decision, citing the new filtering controls as an adequate measure to prevent users from viewing sexual content, while others raised concerns the Steam store could soon be flooded by sex games.

Either way, Negligee: Love Stories is now officially the first uncensored hentai game on Steam - and it likely won't be the last.

Also you can't view the store page without logging in.

I see Gaben found a way to make up for all those lost sales from Activision and Bethesda moving away from Steam pretty fast

True ambivalence. The store will become spammed with anime porn games for losers, but on the other hand certain people's jimmies will be rustled. Can't decide if it's a good tradeoff or not.

So Valve is apparently getting sanctioned by the French Gov, for 147 000 € (peanuts for Gabe) for not respecting a French law regarding refund conditions. Apparently Ubisoft is getting fined for the same reason for 180 000. Here's a French source.

Steam Discussions - Moderation Update
20 SEPTEMBER - ANDREWL

We want to give developers an update on what we’ve been working on related to community moderation and let you know about an upcoming addition to how we support your game communities on Steam. The short version is that starting on Tuesday, Sept 25th, our moderation team will start reviewing reported discussion posts in all game hubs on Steam. You can opt out if you wish. Read on for the details.

How does this work?
Starting on Tuesday, when a discussion thread or post in your community is reported by a player, it will be added to a queue for our moderation team to review. We’ll look at these reported posts (along with all other reported content we are already reviewing) and remove anything that violates our Community Guidelines.

Don’t worry: We won’t be actively perusing your community discussions or posting in threads - you have your own voice and your own style of communication with players about your game. We’ll only be communicating with players if it's necessary when issuing a warning or ban for reported content.

You can also read more about the moderation approach that we will be applying in our Best Practicesdocumentation.

Why now?
For quite a while now, our moderation team has been reviewing and taking appropriate action on many forms of reported community content across Steam, such as screenshots, artwork, guides, user profiles, community groups, and user reviews. In the past, we’ve been hesitant to get involved in the moderation of individual game discussions, as we didn’t want to step on the toes of game developers that want to have their own style of communication with players and their own set of guidelines for behavior.

But over time, we’ve been hearing from more and more game developers that would actually prefer for us to take a more active role in discussion boards, at least to the extent of handling posts that are reported by other players.

Meanwhile, we’ve been expanding the Valve content moderation team to keep up with the increasing number of game communities and the amount of content added to the Steam community. At the beginning of the year, we also added features designed to improve community interactions in the Steam Discussions. You can read more about those additions below: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/1648752205757152068

We are at the point now where we want to make sure we’re putting these tools and human power to use in more ways across the Steam Community.

How can I opt out?
If you do already have your own moderation staff, or want complete control over the reported content in your hub, you can opt out of this service by visiting the Steamworks settings for your game (Edit Steamworks Settings > Community Tab > General).

This is ever exciting list of Steam top sellers by revenue, last week is a bit more interesting.

Of course there's no Bard's Tale 4 and Star Control: Origins. But you've got 太吾绘卷 (aka The Scroll of Taiwu), a Chiense indie Wuxia rougelike set in mythological China. It's currently only available in Chinese (English version may coming later) so Chiense audience was enough to make it on the top seller list.

(Edit: oh yeah I forgot there are threads made recently:

Yeah, also PUBG regained the throne.

You know, every time someone writes "PUBG" I read it as pug, then I imagine a damn pug.
It's funny because in the MMO slang "pug" means "pick up groups" or simply unwashed masses you try to play with as little as possible, because they are random people with random skills and usually without voice chat (which makes it almost impossible to coordinate). Obviously parties made from pug lack of skill and if you value your own time and sanity you form a
rating_prestigious.png
party from people you know (which called "premade").

Oh jeez, after the decision Steam is getting filled with Japanese/Chinese hentai games, Russian boob games, and dead simple puzzle games using free hentai art by gaijins.
