Is this just a charisma check like the others where he will just tell some story, or something more interesting? Anyone know?

It's 10 CHA check. You will persuade him that you are the Chosen One and get "Chosen One" perk, +1 Fame I think and +1 reputation with his House (the mystic freaks one).

Maybe you should give default Merc the the 6 in CHA and INT? it is the average number (for healthy men in game) for both.
IMO the idea that stat of 5 is "below average" with -stat on it is confusing, round 5 should be +0.

It's not bad design if the designer made a check for 6 intelligence, not 8. Don't believe everything you read at forums.
Also, after that one there is a Charisma check of 6 to convince them of your plan.

Good to know, I just died 5 times with my new 7 INT merc, now I'll go die even more because of even more worthless 6 INT 6 CHA combat build

You can only kill dudes if you get artifact I think. You need 6 or 7 PER and 50 Craft.

You can kill them just by initiating combat and attacking them - guard won't care. You can kill a number of bums who stant outside the city this way too, only I guess it is limited - it was fine after I killed just a couple, but then I wiped them all and a guard came to me and told to GTFO or die.

Maybe your build sucks? I found that INT is much better for mercs than PER - my 10 10 4 4 8 4 merc was much better in fight than a 10 10 4 8 4 4 one - you're getting a lot of skill points during merc storyline so those bonus sp easily compensate for -20% hitting chance.

Well actually 6 INT and CHA do make Tower quest a cakewalk, and the last fight with better bros is, probably, passable. But still really long, and Antidas still shoots with his little crossbow like Left Hand of the Devil. Steel Lorica you get for becoming a decanus also opens some possibilites for crafting.

You don't put any points in CON then?

Yeah - I'd loved to, but there's no points to spare. You really need 10 STR and DEX or you DPS turns into shit (I was pumping dodge & used daggers) and I loved the extra sps I gainded form 8 int since they allowed me to have 50 CS (+ bonuses for infiltrating palace) and 60 crafting (for armour piercing 3 and +3 armour on my steel manica). There's just not enough stat points to ever consider CON useful. Well, maybe if you switch two 2-handed weapons you can do it with just 6 str, thus putting CON and CHA at 6. Or maybe not, dunno.

The changes they announced ought to solve the majority of peoples problems.

FYI the best combat build i came up with under the current rules was 10/6/8/6/4 with high block, 50 crafting and 50 dagger.

With Iron imperial armour at DR11 the enemeies can only hurt you with high damage rolls and you block loads too, a crafted dagger kills most ppl in 2-3 turns with 4 fast attacks a round.

You only need 6 in INT to pass the IG questline. True you don't pass the CHA check but if you distract the guards yourself it still nets you the elite soldiers in the final fight.

My new 10-8-8-4-6-4 merc with DR-3 one handed axe, 50 block and DR8 iron lorica feels pretty good about himself, especially after I followed Pope's advice and started to slaughter bums and refugees. I tried to kill Thief Master and clean Tavern, but those dudes out of my league for a straight out assault. Will try kiting and see how many organisations I could wipe out from the face of this filthy city.
Pillage and burn, muahahahaha.

Wow, Skyway has really picked up arms against VD. And meanwhile souding like a whiny little bitch (no surprise here). The game has problems but calling every part of the game broken is retarded. And some of these "broken" things are not really broken, he just doesn't like the design of the game.
I wrote why they are broken on one of first pages. All arguments about them not being broken are for some reason insults.

You'd do well at being VD's cocksucker though. I hope you will be there for VD, telling him that his game doesn't sell well not because it's broken but because everybody is not hardcore enough for AoD's truly oldschool design.

Keep on raising DEX to help with dodge dumbfuck. You were bitching about range combat and on the very same page someone pointed out that they beat the game with a range character. But you ignored them because you'd rather argue with VD and have him tell you how to beat the game. You're a fucking dumb cunt.

Body Count 46, Combat 3 :rpgcodex:
Also "Terminator" perk. And I still did't do Tower quest and last Merc quest. Just cleaned mining and raiders camps.

The build is:
Stats: 10-8-8-4-6-4, COULD go with 6 DEX instead, I ended up using heaviest of armor... but that would probably f-up your castle infiltration options.
Skills: Axe 47, Block 60, Critical Strike 53, Crafting 40. Free SPs: 21
I did things almost the same as in previous run, but now I am using one handed Mineb (-3 DR, and, you know it, it has better damage for fast attacks) and Imperial Armor (11 DR).
Some changes in the run:
- Not only I killed Miltiades thugs, but I killed three other guys who come in if you trust him, and THEN I slit his throat (he spawns near marketplace).
- Killed bums at tower.
- To get the Infiltration perk and enough iron for crafting proceed with Palace as follows: get 48 Crit, go for guard, go for tower and CS guard there, go and CS all guards protecting centurion, kill centurion (I had my trusty Mineb and +2DR crafted Lorica and a buckler), go down and CS the last guard (you need CS of 50(51?) for him). Then CS raiders leader and clean camp (don't forget to carry 3 spare bucklers). With Block 60, slaughter everyone at mining camp: walk back a bit to get away from crossbowmen line of sight, fast attack dude with sword, then kill spearman, then guy with mallet. Run to tower and climb it, and centurion and crossbowman will climb up for you. The bowman probably will bug and won't shoot, but that does't really matter, I had more than 25 HP left when fight ended.
Inside mines, stick to left and kill miners with pickaxes first - they can break your shield. Then kill legionaries.

***

Did the tower on first try. Killed only one dude, but we won. Without CHA6, you get iron lorica and helmet, not steel ones.

I usually got cs 50 before infiltrator as skills after 50 cost 2 points, so more economical that way. Also, pretty sure last guard that you lunge at (crit strike) requires 51, not 50, as I've fought Flavius, got hit for -some stat and cs was only 50 and that wasn't enough.

Dex doesn't improve dodge.

There are easier options to get iron armour - with lockpicks at 35 (? had 37 - got 33 from the start + 4 from Feng's scroll) and sneak 35 you can open the lock at the back of the guardhouse silently, allowing you to take iron armour. Sure, you're not getting combat xps this way, but it allows you to still enter in any fight there (slaves, centurion, you can even fight some guards if you try to open the chest with sneak 30) or to get your etiquette boosted (which killing flavius doesn't allow for).

Actually you do need all 4. Not good enough STR? Shit damage. CON? You die all the time. DEX? You dodge at a speed of a turtle. Low PER? You stop hitting well. All of it in the end means that you die die die die die.
On the 3rd page where Skyway starts bitching about AOD.

Its Sneak and Lockpicks 35.

* * *

Axe 54, Block 70, CS 53, Craft 50. Steel Mineb and iron Imperial Armor (DR11) and two broken bucklers. My killcount rounded up at beautiful 50 with deaths of Antidas, his bodyguard (wait, did't I kill him already on Infiltration "quest"?) and some random dude with a spear. What a bittersweet metagaming revenge.

I asked how they beat the game with a ranged char. The reply was that dude had to hide his bow and pick a dagger instead or skip combat altogether that can be easily done by melee chars. Meaning ranged dudes get the least skill points. I never doubted it was possible to beat the game by skipping it to the credits.
And by DEX I couldn't possibly mean more APs that allowed me to move more, avoiding getting hit as in dodge?

You can't even read, burst into an impotent rage at me pointing out that maybe the game isn't perfect and you call me dumb? The irony.

Use STR 4 and crossbows you can make a good ranged.

Not when you are being dropped into the several dudes who hit hard without having a choice.

There's also a little detail that makes me wonder if non-heavy melee chars were ever properly tested in combat. When you begin a game you can get a quest to escort one dude. Later you teleport with him into an ambush. As it begins you are wearing a heavy armor. Even if you had a light one on you before. Meaning you have to go into an inv and switch it, wasting AP. No way testers could miss this playing lights. Just sayin'

There's apparently a general bug that swaps weapons/armor every time you teleport.

The skill synergies do suggest that you're not supposed to be able to complete the entire thing using only one weapon type. In inevitable close-quarters combat you're going to be needing a melee weapon, though putting you in that situation unnecessarily is pretty bad.
And by DEX I couldn't possibly mean more APs that allowed me to move more, avoiding getting hit as in dodge?
I'm not really sure why people keep mocking you for this, raising dex by a point increases dodge by 2-3 points, that seems pretty valuable.

I call you dumb because that's what you are and I'm not raging. I'm just tired of reading you trash every game with dumbass comments. Why not say no DEX no AP for combat? Why say you dodge at the speed of a turtle. It sounds stupid.

Roguey It's mock worthy because you can raise dodge through skill points. You don't need to raise DEX so you can dodge fast.
It's obvious he started bitching about the game without fulling understanding it's very basic mechanics and giving it a real try. It's also obvious he just bitches about every game out there with little to no reason behind it. And it's so easy to find legitimate reasons for not liking a lot of games released these days.

No, because if you're fighting melee, moving around causes you to get hit more. (and you were referring to melee, because you said low STR gives you shit damage)

In other words, stop the bullshit, start the truth. Roofies!

One person said it, there were no "they". It was his preference, nothing more.
