Or alternatively, if you already have, you can tell me how to do Stage 5 without bombing.

I think it just requires you to have good "fundamentals". I've fired it up again recently after clearing Daioujou, and did a lot better than back when I was trying to 1cc Dodonpachi. Kind of a moot point in any case, as the game gives you enough bombs to :popamole: through the stage.

I did it once, but only after loading the stage directly using a save state and playing it over and over. I like to use save states to "practice", by which i mean i like to pretend i'm better than i am by excelling in short bursts. The best i ever done in a 1CC attempt was getting to the last boss, with no lives left and only one bomb.

Sounds like you just need to get a grip on Stage 6, and you should be set. It's easier than Stage 5 overall, there's a few problem spots, but they're very obvious and you can just bomb then if you get there with enough resources. Final boss isn't too difficult, my plan required that I get there with 6 bombs (so about one life's worth), but only because I refused to learn the final attack. If you can get there with at least one life, it's not that hard to win. Most difficult part of the run is not losing multiple lives on Stage 5.

The fuck is with this new Touhou game...

I gave up at the second boss (Hard) -

Why is her -normal attack- harder than fucking Boundary of Wave and Particle! My God! I must have gotten rusty.

Zun considered "I Wanna be the Guy" as a source of inspiration for this game.

Zun said:
This Point Device mode, although those who knows it already knows, but it is modeled after IWBTG-type (I Wanna Be The Guy) games. Unfair and requires you to learn all the patterns. It doesn't waste the unfairness. Point Device Mode is the way to make it fit with the setting. Oh, Lunar Capital is IWBTG!

This is why the Stage 5 boss is just about as hard as an Extra boss in other games and why the game has a mode that allows you to restart from checkpoints.

Zun said:
After finishing the game:
"Ah~ I don't want to make something like this any more (laugh)"
Every day I challenge these mid-production, doability unsure danmaku. It'd be cool if I can know if it is possible, but under development I can only try myself. The real hell is the studio!
(Next time I make something tamer.)

Since it's done, the nightmare leaves my hand. This time you have the nightmare.

You mean that the Stage 5 boss on Normal is as difficult as an Extra boss in any other game? That's not really unprecedented. Disregarding the difficulty arising from length (Extra bosses have tons of attacks and endurance is a factor), I'd say that the Stage 5 boss of UFO Normal is also harder than any Extra boss I've cleared, pattern for pattern.

Well, imagine a much worse version. They're actually quite similar in concept, if not in pure execution. Both are heavy laser users. But the space you're given to move around and dodge is much smaller than usual in speedy situations.
In UFO, whenever there's micro-pixel dodging things move rather slowly. At least, that's how I perceive it. But Touhou 15 requires fast reaction in that kind of dodging situation.
Just watch the video at that point, have a taste of her first non spell (and then quit when she casts her spellcard if you don't want to be spoiled all the patterns before playing. The ass reaming you get from the unexpected is part of the experience in this game after all) :

I wouldn't really describe UFO s5's boss as harder than any extra either, not sure why you felt so. On normal you're given plenty of "time" to react to everything except for the green rotating laser sequence but that one has low bullet density on the screen. Touhou 15 makes me feel like I'm gasping for breath.

I ran out of bombs during "Clownpiece."

Wtf is it with lasers in this Touhou. These stupid "comet" lasers with a little bullet at the end are fucking impossible for my brain to parse. Hnghghg... And that horrible, horrible scrolling lasers attack. I needed two bombs just to not die from a heart attack. And this is 'Normal'?

Also the bullet count of tiny, hard to see bullets on hard to see backgrounds in the early stages makes my eyes hurt.

Jasede I thought you hated the game. Why not play something you like instead?

Nikaido, I'm just confused why you're comparing the difficulty of these atypically fast (for Normal) bullet patterns to Extra, where you typically have a lot of gimmicky crap that is trivialized through one trick or another, and maybe one or two patterns which are actually difficult to dodge. And yes, I think on average, Shou has more difficult patterns than, for example, the Extra Stage of MoF.

Personally, I still can't consistently no-miss the first two stages of Strikers 1945 II, and the game has 8 of them. Why you gotta make the bullets so fast and hitboxes so big, Psikyo?

how is everyone enjoying touhou 16 so far?

aside from some bugs and some balance oversights (fall release lol), I like it more than 15. difficulty is lower than 14 and 15 but the stages seem way harder because of how tanky everything is

Official Touhou games are coming to Steam: [Japanese] https://www.gamespark.jp/article/2017/10/31/76573.html

Hidden Star in Four Seasons (the latest shmup) will be released "soon", and Antinomy of Common Flowers (a fighter) will be released in early next year. They'll consider releasing the older games depending on the sales of HSiFS.

This potentially means that other unofficial Touhou games could be released on Steam.

Steam page for Hidden Star in Four Seasons is up, and of course there's no English support:

So, is it actually gud? Last one was kinda meh, especially following DDC.

It depends. As someone who liked 15, I thought 16 played like a more refined version of 15 but with a much better gimmick. The stages are actually fairly challenging, unlike most earlier touhou games, and you need to actually use your releases (unless you chose winter). Most of the criticism I see revolves around the setting and story being bland, but they say that about every touhou game before enough time is given to warm up to the characters.

expect:
- fairly tanky enemies
- typical touhou difficulty spike at stage 4, but nothing nearly as infuriating as clownpiece
- good music as always
- timing your releases makes the game feel a little like fairy wars where you have to position yourself to be hit by as many bullets as possible while the release is active
- generous with lives and bombs.
- aun is cute

I'd say this is a pretty middle-of-the-road game from ZUN (judging only from gameplay). Not a cakewalk like IN, but not frustratingly hard like LOLK or UFO.
