UPDATED: In need of JRPGs with good combat (preferrably tactical combat)

So at first I asked JRPG recommendations, and they had to be playable on PC. Eventually I accepted console games too.

But now I realize I'm not really interesting in JRPGs as a genre, as it is a genre that is frankly uninspiring to me. 10 years ago those games were fun, but I'm not looking for shallow gameplay (think Final Fantasy) anymore. So now what I really want is japanese RPGs that have complex or interesting or tactical combat.

For reference, here are the games I have in mind so far:
  1. The three Dark Souls games.
  2. Dragon's Dogma.
  3. Valkyria Chronicles, but I don't know if II & III should be must plays too.
  4. The various Wizardry-clones or Wizardry-inspired videogames, like Elminage Original & Gothic, Mind Zero, Ray Gigant, The Dark Spire, among others.
  5. Final Fantasy Tactics (apparently the rest of the series is not very good).
  6. Tactics Ogre videogames.
  7. The Legend of Heroes.
  8. Ys series.
  9. Vagrant Story (this one I know first hand that it is an amazing game with astounding combat mechanics).
  10. The two Rance videogames in English: Sengoku Rance and Rance VI.
  11. The two Disgaea PC games.
  12. SMT III: Nocturne.
  13. Xanadu Next.
Anyhow, I hope this is a very good representation of what I'm looking for. Once more: games like Chrono Trigger, Mother, Final Fantasy, I'm not really interested in those anymore. I want something that stands out on its own because of its gameplay, and not because of a story I will probably not be interested in.

I'm leaving my original post just for archive purposes, so that other users understand what this thread used to be about, at least for the first 30 posts or so:

Basically that. Game has to be playable on PC, and it has to be EN INGLÉS, please. I'm willing to accept fan translations.

So far I know of these:

- Dark Souls series
- Legend of Heroes I & II
- Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X and X-2 Steam ports, as they appear to be the only games that got nice ones.
- Ys I (original release), Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys Origin, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana.
- Princess Maker 2 Refine
- Grandia II Anniversary Edition
- Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
- Xanadu: Next
- Fortune Summoners: Secret of the Elemental Stone
- Breath of Fire IV
- Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden (not a jRPG, but since it's basically a love letter to them...)

I'm all ears, though I'm technically not since I'm going to bed. Thank you!

If you're willing to consider Barkley, then Anachronox is a good jRPG also.

And PS:T :troll:

Thanks for answering! Almost everyone but felipepepe got the answers wrong, though. They have to be playable on the PC with no emulation! (Maybe I should have said that, but since I said "PC" I thought it was a given) Here's a list, though I'm not sure if it is complete.
The ones in Green I also had them in my list, but I forgot to post them.

Sengoku Rance,
Rance VI,
Kamidori Alchemy Meister,
Way of the Samurai 4,
Stranger in Sword City,
One Way Heroics,
Valkyiria Chronicles,
Hyperdimension Neptunia

All great, fun games.

Thanks! The first three and Neptunia seem a bit on the lewd side, though. Anything you can tell me to convince me to play them? In the Neptunia vein, is the whole series worth it, for that matter?

Elminage Gothic
Final Fantasy VI

It's a shame the PC port of FFVI is so terrible, I don't know why did they thought those character models looked good to begin with...

Any opinions on the following?

- Stardew Valley: was voted pretty high in the Codex's poll.
- Tales of Berseria
- Tales of Symphonia HD
- Tales of Zestiria
- Disgaea PC
- Disgaea PC 2

Yeah man didn't see the PC part until after I posted. Tapatalk wouldn't let me edit my post.

Disgaea and Disgaea 2 on PC are good ones, a lot of grinding, though.

Tales of Zestiria was in a Humble Bundle a couple of days ago, haven't tried it myself although I heard mixed opinions. It's latest entry, Tales of Berseria, all I've heard are good things.

Final Fantasy VII on PC is the most SUPERIOR BY FAR of those I have played.

Even though extreme scum of EA proportion Square Enix tried to stop me from playing the game I purchased directly from them again. I had the last laugh though.

Recettear was not too bad and maybe if I was able to get over the child like story and graphics I would have played it more. It was a bit embarrassing.

You have not mentioned Epic Battle Fantasy 4, which may not be "j" enough. It has disturbing amounts of love on Steam which makes me reconsider "what is a jrpg" all over again. Been trying it for a short while and can't explain all the love. Maybe I am not retarded enough or I need to persevere a bit. There is a decent level of complexity in character design and I suspect hidden strategy in forthcoming battles.

Mmm, I'll keep it in mind.

You guys have probably heard of all these, but posting it just in case you haven't. Maybe you can tell me which ones of those are worth it or not.

There's no porn, only awkward fan service and huge boobs.

The game itself is just some lighthearted fun. Play a dumb story based on video games, read A LOT of meta jokes and battle in very challenging TB combat. Is not revolutionary or a must play, but it sure is fun. Neptunia VII is by far the best, and you don't need to play the others to understand.

A lot of people don't know that FromSoftware recreated the very first PS1 King's Field for PC. It was included with their Sword of Moonlight development package. FromSoftware no longer supports the software, I guess it's abandonware now, but somebody did translate the PC version into English. You can find out more here:

I haven't seen anybody mention Atelier Sophie. I think it's worth playing on PC. You can get it bundled with Nights of Azure:

I compiled this list in the last couple of hours. It contains every or near every (98%) JRPG tagged as such on Steam. I'm pretty sure I caught them all. I split the list in two sections, one for "normal" games, and the other for RPGMaker games. Though because I did split the list around 40 games into my counting, there probably are RPGMaker games in the normal list. If you are wondering, the blue games were ranked pretty highly on Steam, but that could possibly mean anything on that site, as Elminage had "mixed reviews".

There are some JRPGs I know of that aren't on Steam, for example, Breath of Fire IV. And Princess Maker 2 Refine didn't have a JRPG tag, but it's on Steam too... Also got the urge to fap to the Sakura series of games, but that comes later.

Anyhow, I'm still listening for your advice!

The first 3 have a mostly humorous lighthearted story, the last 2 are more serious. The gameplay in all of them is decent to great. They are all turn based. You should also check out Atelier Sophie and Tales of Bersaria they're suposedly good but i haven't played them yet.

The Last Remnant has genuinely fun gameplay, but story is as embarassing as the last few FFs...

Labyrinth of Touhou 2 is another dungeon crawler with lots of character that limits how long each character can participate

Disgaea is a SRPG a la FF Tactics but with the added gimmicks of throwing characters around and puzzle-like "Geo-Effects". Artstyle is gross pedophile but the characters themselves are fun.

Parasite Eve 2. 1 is a bit too blocky graphic for me. Think Resident Evil with less horror and more RPG elements.

You're describing Parasite Eve, but part 2 dumped the RPG elements (also, there was a PC port?)

When I finished my first playthrough I began drafting fan mail for the developers. I can give no stronger endorsement.

Does she has health and MP? yes

Does she has xp and level? yes

Does she get new skill level with xp? yes

Does she get new weapon and armors? yes

Does she modify weapons and armors? yes

Does she have limited inventory? yes

Does she have branch C&C optional quest? That lead to alternate ending? yes

What more RPG elements do you want?
