Having taken a break from GTA Online I decided to finish up some oldies.

Hitman: Codename 47 is of course the first game in the Hitman series and it's still pretty fun, although frustrating. It has this tense atmosphere due to the fact that you can't save during missions. It kind of drills a methodical mentality into you and that's how it's supposed to be. However, when the mission goes tits up because of some bullshit glitch or AI nonsense, that's when it becomes bothersome. The missions could've been better designed as well. The whole jungle part was unnecessary and didn't really fit into the theme of assassination and subterfuge. Also them animations - especially in the cutscenes. :D Spastic 47 is the best 47.

I've also played Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars. I don't mean the travesty which is the Director's Cut; thankfully GOG included the option of playing the original version. Of all the games that I've played in my lifetime there are a few which hold a special place in my heart, for one reason or another. Games such as Might and Magic VI, Heroes of Might and Magic II, the original Baldur's Gate, Operation Flashpoint and Broken Sword. Whether it's nostalgia or something else, these games are quite special and important. Broken Sword might very well be the most essential game for me. I can't think of anything else which elicits such a emotional response. It's difficult to explain but I'm sure that every gamer has their own small collection of games which are separate from everything else. For me, I think it's the combination of voice acting, music, graphics, writing and the fact that I played this game in my childhood at exactly the right time. Is it a masterpiece? Maybe, maybe not. Probably not. All I know is that I'll never grow tired of it and I'll always return to it with the same enthusiasm. It's almost like returning to a specific place from one's past that just naturally puts you at ease.

There's something really special in Broken Sword when you get those musical stings and cues as you solve puzzles.

While I really love this game, the later portions are a fucking chore.

Finished Torment 2 Numanuma after 27 hours and doing almost all the quest I found,a couple I left and one I could activate due to a bug
Not a bad game overall although it never comes close to the original. The game had some good ideas but never managed to use them fully, trying to copy as much as it could from the original wasn't a good idea too.I have no experience with the pnp setting but I liked it,don't know how faithful it is to the pnp of course.
The writing is ok but it would be better if they had a better editor to trim some of the fat,the main plot tries to copy PST Torment a bit too much but is serviceable.Your team member aren't that great,Erritis is probably the most interesting and he is the best use of the scan thoughts mechanic,I send Rhin into the portal so I can't comment on her,the other are just meh.
The mechanics are bad but they can be easily abused to make every skill check easy, the Crisis mechanic was another interesting idea that was poorly implemented, the guy who thought that having a turn based battle encounter with continuously spawning enemies and a mechanic that can make you lose a turn and make the whole encounter even longer(the stupid Heart of the Bloom crisis) is special and by special I mean completely retarded.Thankfully you can avoid most of the battle but there are a couple of crisis' you can't
In the end the game had potential but it's obvious it had problems during development that never allowed it to be as good as it could be.
Might replay it once they release some cut content like they said in their email

P.S. I forgot,I loved the Codex quest it was pretty simplistic and non codexers with not understand wtf just happened but it is full of wink wink nudge nudge moments so I enjoyed it

P.S. 2 Oh and for a game called Tides of Numenera the Tides have a surprisingly small part in actual gameplay

SOMA. After Penumbra series and the first Amnesia it's such a letdown. No inventory, no health or sanity system, just a little bit more and it would be another walking simulator. No sense of fear or isolation, or loneliness. Constant conversations with Catherine make it fell like a parody on Portal. :decline:

tbh I didn't find Amnesia scary or tense either.

And yeah, SOMA is pretty shallow mechanically compared to both Amnesia and Penumbra, but fortunately even Frictional is aware of that and they will supposedly follow a different design route in their next title. Or that's what they said at least.

Finally completed Unreal. I was convinced I had beat it back in the days, but I can't remember the Demon Lord, the Mother Ship, the Queen, or the ending at all. I think I started the game on Hard and then decided on the middle or last level of the ISV Kran (the wave of ten pairs of Skarj attacking) that the game was too hard, then restarted on Normal, but only got as far as the Nali Castle, which I remember.

Anyway my verdict: :4/5:

The good:
The graphics. Absolutely gorgeous.

Enemy AI. They are smarter and more agile than is usual in shooters. The roles are kind of reversed compared to Doom, where you can run rings around enemies.

Level design. Very varied environs, varied sizes, and most levels are quite good. Bluff Eversmoking is outstanding, and the only level I disliked was Terraniux.

Controls. Very smooth (no motion sickness), and you can acually look straight up and down, giving you a full 360 degrees view and complete control (I actually quit Dark Forces due to no being able to look down and target some enemy that had no problems targeting me).

The so-so:
Sound. Sound is generally good, but some annoying effects (like the screams from prisoners and the Translator). Also some of the weapon sounds are rather weak. Overall weaker sound FX than for example Doom.

The weapons. The only weapon that feels powerful is the Flac Cannon. Most weapons have their uses, even the Bio Weapon which is kind of a joke. I used it once to kill a Titan while running around a column. The Pistol is as good as the machine gun (weapon 10) which felt wrong.
The Razor was fun to use tactically on occasions.

The bad:
Enemies are bullet sponges, even the little goblin dudes.
Even headshots with the rifle needs at least two shots.
(EDIT) Never more than three enemies at a time. Originally due to the holy Polygon Count, but it would have provided better variation with some more intense gun fights against larger numbers of enemies.

My love with Frictional Games was lost after the Dark Descent.

I just started playing NWN so far I'm enjoying it I guess nothing special, I do like the 3.0 rule set though.

Invisible inc. - bought the dlc when it was a few bucks last gog sell. I have no idea how I use to think this was a good game. Highly repetitive with little replay value. A stealth game MUST have good level design marriaged with enemy placement, if it doesn't, its a dull crap experience.

Pharaoh + Cleopatra - 40 hours in, so good, but gets overwhelming at times though. Its odd.... these impression city builders give me factorio vibes.

My main focus right now is Mount and Blade Warband mod Prophecy of Pendor. Best mod of all time.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
I finally finished the first Gothic yesterday.

After losing my initial 20 hour save that I began around two weeks ago I went back and blitzed through the game in about 16 hours.

I was surprised with how great the Sleeper's temple actually looked, way larger and more intricate than I was expecting after trudging around the run down penal colony for hours. Quite an imposing structure.

I also liked Xardas' old tower; so grim and disturbing I had to wonder why he's really helping the player.

The last few bits of backtracking, the Ulu-mulu in particular, annoyed me somewhat but it didn't take long to actually acquire the items I needed.

On to Gothic 2 tonight, although I'm not really that keen on NotR.

I also finished Horizon: Zero Dawn. Was p. gud.

NotR is good. I don't get those that struggle with it. I think I killed the big bad of NotR half way into the full Gothic 2 game and though he hit like a truck, was easy enough to whittle away while scoffing healing items. The hardest part is the valley with heaps of brutal beasts there that take ages to wear down. I used transform scrolls to bypass most. While tempted before the end game to go back and genocide that place, I never did. Maybe in my next go I will.

Barnabas I've actually completed the first Risen twice, Risen 2 once and gave up on Risen 3 after about 10 to 15 hours. Risen 1 was somewhat OK, Risen 2 was pretty bad, Risen 3 was kind of better than Risen 2 but still basically awful. This just reminded me of the voice acting in Risen 3, jesus fucking christ it was shit.

commie I do question NotR's decision to make the stats more "hardcore" so that you really need to specialise and save up those tablets, it doesn't really sit right with me. I'm not keen on the pirate stuff either, especially after Risen 2.

I definitely finished NotR at least once, though. I think I cheesed the boss guy with summons while I ran around like a headless chicken.

The main draw of NotR for me is the fleshing out of Gothic 1 bros in Gothic 2 and I'm reluctant to give that up.

The way I remember it, the problem with NotR was that the new "difficulty" essentially boiled down to absurd hit point inflation for enemies. Particularly bad for mage, where the damage is already very limited and where killing enemies before they get close is essential. Truly terrible design.

Finished Her Story it's a nice adventure/whodunnit visual novel where you have to search through a police database of 200+ small videos of questioning of a woman in various dates regarding the murder of her husband. The trick is you have to use the correct search terms to get the videos you need to piece the story together and figure out what happened since you can't just browse through them and only the first 5 video of a search word will appear,so searching for "the" will probably get you 100 video but you will see just the first five.
Recommended since it's pretty unique and the story is good(no the fact that she killed him isn't the big plot twist) but it's a small game,I needed about 2 hours to finish it,so just get in on a sale.

Searching for my kidnapped sister
UFO Extraterrestrials Gold, Grayfiend Unimod.

Pass about ten battle, I think. And confirm a few things about UFO ET I suspected in the past

- The game is not about tactical so much as horror. You never know when some alien monstrosity gonna throw a green gas grenade at your feet and knock you down. Even if you purposeful build up scout unit with AP, it's still no sure tactic to prevent that shit. And I am pretty weak against horror.

- The setting of a strange, unknown alien world make sure that players dont care about setting. No hook at all. No familiar names like Martian locations in UFO Afterlight. No fixed characters. No quest. No events. No even the different regions in the world. The RPG elements are very light. This is a bad thing.

I am by no means sure that I can continue much more. Its weakness are not about gameplay at all, as that aspect is pretty solid. It's purely RPG element, as in the lack of it.

In future, for needs to kill alien monstrosity to save the world, UFO Aftershock and AFterlight is enough.

I don't know, I feel the current mission structure of the game and series mostly fails to take advantage of the open-world part of the game. It's like two separate games. Why not do something like Mercenaries 2 where you can use your hard earned cash to call in airstrikes, tanks, choppers, etc., in missions? Right now the only outside-effect you can have on your missions is maybe some better weapons and armor.

I love GTA games, but been feeling this way since at least Vice City/San Andreas. It's like there is this dynamic city with cool emergent behavior (if you do stuff in-between missions), but the storylines are fixed and pre-canned. It would be so much better if had a dynamic mission/storyline on top of the city. It's not even difficult to imagine how it would work. You would have various dynamic gangs with persistent members (with name, traits/stats, looks, position within gang, etc), and they would engage in a city-wide dynamic economy and territory-control/warfare. If one of them takes over a business, it gets richer, the other poorer, member deaths/imprisonment affects them and so on. The player's character would be plunged into this, where they can choose to join any of them, and rise up in rank dynamically. Maybe even have perma-death for extra brownie points.

Having taken a break from GTA Online I decided to finish up some oldies.

Hitman: Codename 47 is of course the first game in the Hitman series and it's still pretty fun, although frustrating. It has this tense atmosphere due to the fact that you can't save during missions. The first game in that series is so underrated. It pretty much created all the gameplay used in the sequels, with later, much more highly regarded titles only only enhancing the formula. Back in 2000 when it came out, it was so mind-blowing in many ways. The physics, the clothing stealth, the AI, the completely new type of gameplay.

With all this talk about the new Mass Effect I remembered I had never played any of the ME3 DLCs aparts from the Prothean one so I downloaded a not removed version of the game and loaded my old saves that thankfully were still somewhere in my hard drive.

Omega Underwhelming, this is about helping Aria take back Omega from Cerberus so I expected some cool Renegade action but they tried to put some drama in it with the whole Aria's ex lover thing and that was just meh,the action wasn't that great too.

Leviathan This one was about searching the galaxy for clues about an ancient Reaper killer, the Leviathan, better than Omega and the whole trying to pin down which system to go every time was nice, too bad while this was supposed to change the ending a bit by learning more about the Reaper's history it seems it barely changes five words in your discussion with the ghost kid in the end.

Citadel The best among them,it's about getting a new apartment in the Citadel and a mysterious figure that tries to kill you.The action is better than the others since there are a few big areas where you can actually flank the enemies, also the boss battle is quite challenging. As for the story it's nice and in the end after you beat the bad guy you can hang out in the new areas of the Citadel with your bros and throw a party for everyone in the end, even some teammates from the previous games appear in this one,it's lighthearted fanservice with a lot of tongue in cheek(hell Tali evens comments on how her sweat smells when she is hangover after the party). It's basically a love letter to the whole trilogy and captures one of the best thing about ME hanging out with space bros and listening to their stories

Maybe if I finish the dozen or so unplayed games I have on Steam/GOG and find the time I will go for another full trilogy playthrough one day

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
I beat The Dwarf Run. Fun little game. I did hit a bug that force me to reload a save that was from a much earlier part of the game. I did have these issues to and from. I enjoyed the game. Fun combat. Some encounters seemed impossible at first, but with better gear, leveling up and some new strategies, one could climb these obstacles. The turn-based combat was fun. I just wish there were some more items to choose from. The adventure game elements the game added gave the game some change of pace, even if they aren't overly complicated.

I am now playing Tale of Wuxia, The Temple of Elemental Evil, How to Survive and Shadow Warrior.
