Why Crysis still looks better than most of todays games?

It doesn't matter that it is a photoshop. If anything, that makes it worse, since the effect looks like shit.

Here is why:

Turns out, making a game that looks great but only plays well on 5% of PCs in the world, is not very commercially viable.

Is that even true though? I mean sure Crysis 1 wasn't really a huge commercial hit initially but it did gain them a ton of notoriety and they got to make an expansion and 2 sequels. Crysis also had a long shelf life selling well for several years after the release. I think it's more likely Crytek fucked it up by making Crysis 2, and to a lesser extent 3, shit and failing to recognize market trends regarding selling their engine until it was too late.

Well, it has to run on a console now, does it not?

Kudos to dice for making a game that doesn't look like vomit. To bad the game itself IS vomit.

Both CPU and GPU progress stalled at around 2006-2007, after the release of the GeForce 8800GT and Intel Q6660. There's been some progress since then, but incremental rather than big jumps like those two were. Add in the facts that this was a PC-exclusive game that pushed hardware requirements for the next two years after release, that you get huge diminishing returns trying to push graphics further, and that all newer high budget graphics games are console titles, and it's not that unreasonable that it's still among the best looking games.

Not only that, but there are also disminishing returns in terms of graphic fidelity and processing power.
Even with a twice as powerful CPU and GPU the graphic fidelity improvement isn't going to be through the roof.

Best proof of that can actually also be seen in consoles, especially cross gen stuff.
There were PS3 titles that also came out for the PS2. However, they needed a complete do-over and are basically entirely different games because there is no way those games could run on such a hardware : Ghostbusters, Double Agent, Alone in the Dark 5 come to mind.

Now check the PS4/PS3 thing : PS3 still had a lot of games that were also released on PS4. All they required was lower resolution, texture, less detailed models, and slightly worse framerate. And that's it. Most current gen titles could run on a PS3 using less details, the reason being that while the PS4 is a shitload more powerful than the PS3, it can only make games slightly better looking.

This is also true for PC games.

The real reason is that crysis pushed hard to be cutting edge in a way few games do now. And when they do, its for cinematic bullshit like your depth of field and the like.

Doesn't help that most games are console ports or indies (of which 90% use unity and are a lost cause before they even begin when it comes to graphics).

Crysis might possibly be the best shooter, it's before pre popamole times, the graphics hold its own today, the gunplay is great, the controls are great, the environment is destructible, open world done well, and even the suits powers are interesting.
