Why does Xenforo hate transparency in pngs?

This has to do with transparent pngs being viewed in the forum list or in the chatbox.

Sometimes there's white where there should be transparency:

It only affects avatars that weren't added a long time ago. Why is this happening?

Probably because it's using the standard GD Image functions and not ImageMagick.
