I've seen across the boards (especially with the DS kickstarter and the BM == VD thing) some bitching whinning trolling typical codex comments about the AoD demo not delivering, or not being a RPG, or whatever.

So what exactly made people butthurt about AoD?

Yes, I am still butthurt about the Pixel Shader requirement which was added between the combat demo and the regular demo.

Permanent death from engaging in combat was also a big one.

I'm curious - what kind of system are you using? Is it a specific PS revision that's alienating it, or it doesn't support PS at all?

The computer that I use for old games has a 1999 era Geforce 3 with 64 MB of vram.

Ran the combat demo with solid FPS, but wouldn't run the more recent demo at all.

Yeah, sounds like they should make the fancy post-processing optional. I don't use any PP at all in my engines, but I can see how a 3D engine can benefit from it.

Not being party based so peeps can have all the skills and all the weapons at their disposal in one playthrough seems to be a really big one too.

imagine the player character and his handsome nemesis double crossing each other at the exact same moment

both realise the betrayal and immediately turn back towards each other, eyes flashing

you grab each other by the collars in fury

    then the angry kissing starts

Guess I'll try to give a serious answer, since I'm the contrarian faggot and all

    - Combat is too unforgiving, most codexers like easier RPGs (according to the ALL TIEM TOP 10 lists that pop up once in a while).

    - VD sees no problem with saving skillpoints to use as needed (this reflects in the stricter skillchecks) but codexers like when they can have a build in mind from the start.

    - Likewise, VD sees no problem with teleporting but codexers like walking around, but it sounds like this could be alleviated by making the scene changes less abrupt.

I found it a bit confusing how little are the differences between female and male models. A sign of times, perhaps.

VD is just too stuck up to take criticism - is all.

When VD released his first combat demo people were telling him about the issues with combat (although they weren't as obvious there since there was nothing but combat). Judging by reactions of VD to those and recent criticisms - he basically selected testers who liked his vision of "skip all game with dialogues, fuck everything else" and the ones who pointed out that combat was unbalanced and "lololo you got ambushed 101th time" design is not the right way to go were told to GTFO.

So judging by how pre-release game is - VD basically had testers that told him what he wanted to hear. As a result you get a game where it's very easy to just skip all the combat, but very hard to create a combat char that doesn't suck at what he does. And not because the combat is challenging, but because VD team never ever tested it as evidenced by absolute inability to play the game as a ranged character/melee chars not being able to attack because they are getting killed before it's even their turn to move in many encounters since VD just teleports the player into the middle of enemies which is a shit design, no excuses. If there was a freedom of approach that even the most casual "RPGs" have the combat wouldn't be such a mess.

VD faced a reality where not everyone enjoys skipping gameplay through storyfagism.

But instead of saying "yeah guys, we've fucked up" VD is going "ololo you are just casual fags" even if "casual fags" spend time playing such casual games as 4X, global strategies, flight/racing/whatever simulations and oh yes - RPGs with char permadeath too. While "hardcore" AoD doesn't even need a quest compass because you are being teleported right to the quest completion destination all the time.
