Sounds similar to something that happened to me a couple of years ago, only I threw a glass of whiskey in his face (the entire glass, not just the whiskey) and then started kicking the shit out of him before he could get up.

One of his friends tried to stop it so he got some too, before some of my friends pulled me away. Anyway, in situations like that- like SCO said, consider all ties cut. If you want to apologise because you feel your reaction was wrong, do so, but don't assume you can be friends. Whatever you do, apology or not, is for you, not for anyone else involved.

If he gets aggressive again at a later date, especially if you run into one another, make sure you put him on the floor. In that case, he'd need to know that if he's going to try something, you will, in the words of John BROmero, make him your bitch.

Pretty much.

It's a bit more complex than that I think. From what I remember he was mainly upset that some of the Codex editorial staff read it, said 'ok yeah that's good' before posting it, but then after it was posted and the backlash started began to suddenly find things to criticise, which obviously felt like a bit of a knife in the back.

Basically he was under the impression that the Dex editorial staff played a more serious role, when in reality all that's done is a quick check-over for spelling and awkward phrasing most of the time, and critique of the actual content tends to be left for after it's published. The assumption probably existed in large part due to his academic background. Anyway, that's the misunderstanding that birthed the butthurt.
