Now, i literally just started doing a menu/interface/shop/items/monsters/spells/classes/etc translation on Wizardry XTH 2: Unlimited Students last night so obviously these pictures won't exactly be... good. But here they are! The game is VERY good. Much, MUCH better (i.e. more difficult, "hard-core" if you prefer; and much closer to Wiz 1-5 than the Gen XTH series and their new games)...

initially i thought the menus were textures and would require image editing but thank god they aren't! this one's super ready to get translated. it's also much more forgiving on text limitations than wiz-empire-3 on psp and as you can see on the pics i was testing how far before they broke out of the boxes.

goddamn i fucking hate working with psp shit. fucking consoles. i would be more than up to tackling generation xth 2 and 3 (already torrented them) but obviously this would require a comitted translator as the gen xth games have huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge scripts. you spend 40% of those games rapidly clicking through dialog so you can go to a dungeon.

WEE look at meeee, yep, wizardry xth is 100% "doable". no spacing concerns and the char limit is extremely generous. this has put me thinking that perhaps i should go back to the PS2 version of wizardry-empire-3 as i'm almost certain all of its annoying limitations are due to the PSP port-n-stuff. Gonna go torrent I MEAN GOOGLE the ps2 iso of wiz-emp-3 right now.

um, yeah i know that's not really impressive at all. i do enjoy dressing her up in outfits and undressing her though. seems like just the thing the Wizardry formula was missing all these years.

EDIT: i know you guys will think this is the most retarded way to do this but check this out: this is how i find the menu commands in a game...

- i screen-capture the game's menu and take mental note of the japanese gobbledegook.
- i open up windhex32 (hex-editor) and load up it's Table Editing utility and start using the standardized shift-jiss table; i.e. i lean foward close to my monitor and stare without blinking while slowly scrolling through every single japanese character, hiragana and katakana, until i magically voila-spot the ones that are in the game. i copy them...
- i open up crystaltile2 (hex-editor) and use it's find feature to find every single instance in the GIGANTIC .bin/whatever file of that specific japanese character or SET of characters. sometimes it takes me 10 mins sometimes an entire night.

- eventually i always find the specific japanese characters looking like they look in the _game_ and then i translate them.

MrRichard999
Helly
H-K

i dunno is that retarded way to do this? hehe i once spent almost 2 hours combing through Elminage 2's dialog file (scp.bin) looking for the very first dialog spoken at the player when you begin a new game. i had in my right hand a paper with the japanese dialog and then i just spent two hours eyeballing that fucking archive until i finally found the dialog.

my first ever graphical hack... behold

Screenshot%202016-04-29%2022.34.52_zpse5dc7x75.png~original

yes that is a real image lol

i finally figured out the correct method and combination of tools to correctly (without fucking up the texture) extracting/re-inserting graphics in a PSP game. :)

i have ZERO image editing skills hence the lol-worthy MSPAINT Letterbox over that menu command :D

but hey, finally!

HERE is wiz-empire-3's font.bmp:
PPSSPPWindows_W256_H512_F21_T_0XCCFDA70C764FDB42_zpsawhw5ydq.jpg~original

i tried simply reducing it's size by 50% and it sure enough worked fine in-game... i mean, worked in that letters showed up, heh. hard to explain aside from saying it looked fucked up but i'm gonna try again and reduce it by 5 percent and take screenshots.

meanwhile here is a pic of the texture/word "KEEP" which i did the same thing and reduced it by 50%... it is interesting because unlike showing up all fucked but somewhat recognizible like the font tile did, instead the "KEEP" word (it is a canned texture the game renders all-at-once) instead this showed up in-game reduced in size by half but....

Screenshot%202016-04-29%2023.17.39_zps9uvuj87q.png~original

you can notice the white space which is the maximum space alloted for that texture/letters, which is why it CAN go outside the rectangle box. btw i also extracted all of the rectangles... but i think it's much smarter to reduce/fix/something the actual font/letters instead of making the rectangles bigger.

EDIT INCOMING...

MrRichard999
ThisNameIsFree

well that font map is completely useless. the game only uses that one for the character's names... lol i reduced its size by 5% and sure enough it shows up in-game...

the game itself is almost exactly the same gameplay-wise as the Generation XTH games and (i assume) students of the round and labyrinth cross blood... except since this is when they were Michaelsoft and not yet Muramasa/EXP and they had the official Wizardry license they these two games play much more like traditional Wizardry (duhh.. i guess) simply because of the Wiz-rules/systems/vancian casting. I find Wizardry XTH 2 (haven't played much of 1 yet) to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Also doesn't seem to be heavy on dialog unlike Muramasa/EXP's later games which bodes well for possibility of a full translation!

THAT'S the texture tiles from elminage 1, (already in english), but the same image(s) from elminage 2 and 3 (which i want to translate... someday. those are the games i MOST want to have in english) are exactly the same image just like that one, except obviously the writing is in JAPANESE.

now, a graphics hacker would do same shit i did, rip the image out of the game, etc etc, but then he would fire up his PHOTOSHOP CRACKED or whatever and "re-draw" the translated english word and so replace the japanese characters. and it would come out looking all pretty and shit, just like the officially localized image above from elminage 1.

but i don't know how to edit images. i just want to translate elminage games... at the very LEAST a fully working everything-except-npc-dialog translation patch. y'know what i mean? all you need to play and finish the game basically....

but like i said i don't have time to learn image editing so i'm just going to slap a letterbox on top of the commands lol.mspaint does this just fine!

hey, if anyone feels like doing the graphics work let me know!

I MOTHERFUCKING FIGURED IT OUT.

Those lazy motherfucking shitpushers at StarFish didn't make a font map for Wizardry Empire 3 _at all_. Both the PS2 and PSP versions of the game utilize the console hardware's built-in native font creation, which is why the font map inside the game's files doesn't affect the regular text at all as it was only a quickie one done up for the player names (because they wanted the player to be able to input english names and stuff but did not want to go through the trouble of making a font map in latin characters so they did a small one).

this is actually not THAT uncommon but it IS rare. almost every single developer implements at the very least a modified version of the native console hardware's font output. I guess they just couldn't since StarFish was in big financial trouble around the time of this game's release.

in comparison Elminage 2 and 3 not only have font maps... do they fucking have 'em. Elminage 2 and 3 utilize TWO different font bmp's for latin characters and FOOUR, yes, FOUR different Font bmp's to cover all of the kana/gana characters.

I mean you are putting an image over an image; Which looks like shit. But there's a few things you could do:

1.) Color pick the background of each field and "blank out" the text with that color. Than you can overlay your own white text on top.

2.) What stops you from creating an identical image from scrath with the same field positions but with different fonts? Just override the original file...

you know of course i'm just going to slap a letterbox w/ english on top of every tile, right? :kingcomrade

until someone who knows graphics imaging comes along and wants to do it. I don't even know where i would begin, you'd basically have to remake the entire tile.

EDIT: yes, i had already thought of blacking out the tile and writing in white letters, it is the best suggestion and easy to do. as for the why to your question? um, just look at all that work. there's still the entire game to work on too, that's just the graphical menu textures.

this is the reason i was never able to get any work done on elminage games. they're too big. way too big.

Hmm, I'm busy as shit with publishing my company's 10Q until Wednesday. Lemme take a look at it then if you haven't figured out a better solution. I'll have next Friday off and a bottle full of Vyvanse to get this shit done :)

um, hey... so uh, i'm donwloading a free version of Photoshop right now and dude, how the fuck do i do what you suggested?

all i want to do is "cover" the japanese text by filling out the entire tile witht he same color as its background. then i want to letter-box/write on it what the command is in english letters.

for the life of me i can't figure out how to do this...

well this is what happens when devs get money. when StarFish was broke ass nigga broke churning out Wizardry Empire titles they kept shit simple, i.e. no fucking graphics and textures for menus and shit just good ole TEXT. not only is this cost-effective (the coder can do it so it eliminates one less artist to hire for the studio) but for the wannabe-translator it is also much easier: he (or she) only has to hex-edit the text.

but nooo they sold a few copies of elminage games and now they want bling. so the fucking elminage games use graphical text (i think that's the official term? heh) i.e. text you see in-game but it isn't actually text: in reality it is a complete texture without any "text" whatsoever. the letters are graphics.

this makes poor wannabe translators cry because they don't know how to edit images and also even if they knew they cry anyway because it means it's a ton of work... think of how long it takes to image-edit the battle menu versus the 3 minutes tops it takes me to use a hex editor and overwrite the japanese text for "Fight".

but hey, i guess it looks pretty.

btw, needless to say companies like to super-duper encrypt their assets inside their games so even yanking out the damn images are a huuuge pain in the ass. took me weeks to finally learn how to rip the elminage images AND how to correctly re-insert them (that last part had me scratching my head for a long time).

whereas on PC games you just fucking double click the fucking folder that says IMAGES INSIDE and they're all right there in BMP or TGA or whatever no proprietary console file types like sony's abominable TIM/GIM for images.
