Sim city 2000 had an elegant simplicity going for it. 3000 Broke that to a small extent.

4 was pretty "bad" at release, some of the systems had changed a lot, so it was suddenly much harder to jump-start a city. People would end up spending more time in the early game, and while it was all very detailed and charming, it had problems. Changes to the way the game calculated traffic etc made managing larger cities a fucking nightmare as well, until after some patching (and modding) occurred. In general it shifted to being a lot more micro than macro, IIRC. Which, depending on your style, was either a blessing or a curse.

Of course, when you compare it to nu-SimShitty on release, you suddenly realize how fucking great that game was, but back then you were comparing to SC2K and SC3K rather than to Societies and 2013. Sim/builder/economy genres weren't in the shitter back then like they're now, so you could afford being a picky asshole.

It did have garbage from day 1 though. I bought it at launch and was actually quite butthurt about having to paint half the map with landfills to accommodate everything. Then I learned the power of Baby Boomer thinking: fuck it, ship it next door and let the future worry about that.

I could never get into SimCity 4 when it came out. The whole broken-up zones thing never sat well with me, and I distinctly remember every time my city started to get decently populated traffic would descend into unmanageable chaos and I'd give up. Maybe I should give the game another shot with the expansion and mods.

Sim City 2000 was among Red Baron and X-Com2 first games installed on my first owned comp so it was blast to play.... SC 3000 skipped that and SC4 is good game but it does have its annoying parts like Sims integration and such.... But nothing beats the building of City with Garbage dump for half of country, Military and Rocket Testing base, Coal Plants and Atomic Disposal Center... My green oriented friends got hearth attack watching this one. Good times Comrades and Trannies.:hero:

Didn't particularly dislike any of the SimCities gameplay-wise, but SimCity 4 was the most crashey and buggy, at least on the computer I had when it came out. Poor QA wasn't something I ever recall being in previous games. It did run fine on later systems I owned, but that was years and years later. 4's region system was a novel addition, but flawed by the hassle of having to paint all those landscapes manually, or import a heightmap from a third-party program to do it for you. Rush Hour also had a few pointless gimmicks that added nothing to the enjoyment of the game.

If only SC4 was multithreaded... I have problems running it on my modern PC. Don't think there are any fanpatches that solve the crashing issues for me.

I had terrible crashing issues, but I got it to run completely stable. You have to do a few tweaks to make it run smoothly:
1. limit executable to one processor core (the main issue)
2. extend accessible RAM space (the NAM does that automatically if you let it)
3. make it recognize your graphics card as a fast card (this needs editing a system file)

There is an automatic tool that adjusts most of these settings for you, but it doesn't work for everyone (I had to edit the graphics card settings myself).

Here's my "launch options" in the Steam "Properties":
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -CPUCount:1 -intro:off

The CPU count is already handled here, the rest is screen resolution and getting rid of the intro video.

Someone made a really hilarious and creative solution for the garbage thing...they created a garbage chute in which the trash was depicted as literally being DUMPED OFF THE SIDE OF THE MAP TO FALL INTO THE ABYSS.

On a more serious level, the usual method I use for dealing with trash seriously is incinerators. Burninate it and have power!

That's certainly the easiest way. I usually use a modded one that is clean. If you think that's a cheat, then I can only point at the game-intrinsic solution Zarniwoop hinted at: use one small tile and fill it with a city that only consists of garbage dumps. Let them run for a moment, close the tile and never visit it again. The price for garbage is dependent on the ratio of utilized garbage dump space to free dump space. As that tile with the dumps never actually receives any garbage, because you never open it again, prices for neighbor deals are rock bottom. That's more or less the freeloader approach.

It's a bit of a hassle though to always keep those chains of deals up-to-date when the cities grow, and I'm lazy.

I used to play a lot of Sim games back in the day, SimCity, SimIsle, SimTower, SimAnt, SimCity 2000, heck even SimCopter. Always felt SimCity 3000 and beyond was turd territory though.

Grab the Codex by the pussy
maxis games, back when maxis was maxis, were never fully "games", most of the times they were tools, you sent some input in them and then watched how things evolved, in a believable way. that's why even if the game was broken, the simulation was appreciated anyway.
what does today's shitcity simulate, other than boredom?
damn i misread this as marxist games

I played *a lot* of SC2K. Played a little of SC3K, mainly to experiment with mods. Played SC4 once.

I'm simply too cynical in my world view to play games like this any more.

Streets of SimCity was a cool concept though. Would play something like that again maybe. Sort of a GTA/SimCity hybrid.
