The problem with this thread is that there's a big gulf between a game that's replayable and a game that's what you would consider a damn good game. On top of this there are games which are not really replayable and are also not very good games but are just very, very long games, so it feels like it's worked its way into your heart. There are also games which fill one with nostalgia but not a lot else, a sort of time induced fanboyism for stuff that's probably shitter than you think it is. Then, when it comes to writing out a list you have to wonder what the reader is going to get out of your list, do I write for the audience or do I write for myself, the former requiring the answers to be of actual use to the reader and the latter just being an exercise in memory recall and self flagellation.

So what I've decided to do is just do a quick advert for a bunch of games I think certain other (prestigious) people here might like but possibly haven't played yet. They aren't my definitive top 10 of all time, but they might be and it probably wont be 10 either:

Icewind Dale 1 - Vanilla only. Not the very first vanilla but the one that was the result of the first post-release patch, still pre-Heart of Winter. Playing with the Heart of Winter expansion installed changes the game radically, across the board, so if you've never played vanilla IWD then it could well feel like a completely different game. If you happen upon the very rare original vanilla, beware, it was quickly patched for a reason and you'll be able to tell if it's original vanilla because +2 weapons can't hit the Snake Queen.

It's a RTwP cRPG using the AD&D ruleset with a focus on combat and hack'n'slashing but with plenty of other nice surprises of all types along the way.

Sword1_zpsmaqlvyfj.png

Medieval: Total War - Again, vanilla is fine but with this game I'd recommend installing it with the Viking Invasion expansion pack, but just not bother playing the Viking Invasion part as the main game gets the very useful upgrade of allowing you to arrange your troops before battle if you do, something that's quite annoying on pure vanilla (but still manageable).

It's a 4x game where you manage your empire and build improvements on a huge map but then zoom to actual battlefields to fight big battles in Real Time with 100s to 1000s of troops, all of which are commandable by you.

MTW160Begyptnearlyfull_zps7xrig0ao.png

Myth: The Fallen Lords - I think there's only one version of this around, though I could be wrong.

It's a Real Time Squad Tactics game where each mission forms a chapter in a wonderfully narrated greater quest. It was an early 3D polygon graphics game, so the backgrounds are pretty hilarious by today's standards but the units themselves are none too unattractive eye catching sprites. Friendly fire is not turn offable.

stair-of-grief.jpg

Robin Hood The Legend of Sherwood - Again, no idea about versions.

It's another Real Time Squad Tactics game where each mission forms a story in a greater narrative, the difference with this game being there's a whole lot more to fathom out with regards to getting your posse to behave at the optimum and maintaining a large force, not to mention combining both murderous and non-murderous solutions. Requires a sense of humour as it's more light hearted than the one above, if no less challenging. A very polished game in practically every respect.

screen800x500.jpeg

Any Worms game from 1995-2002 - version immaterial.

Another Squad Tactics game but this one is turn based and there is no grand narrative though they do have campaigns but they are not linked narratively. Also requires a sense of humour and, again, friendly fire is not turn offable.

40f26a4425658cc5fdd97e9dbb473f5ba5c86857.jpg

Civilisation III - Complete Edition (otherwise known as Conquests) which improves the game greatly from both Vanilla and then the Play the World expansion by allowing such cool things as, amongst others, Armies and Small Wonders.

It's a Turn Based 4x game and is considered 'The Middle Child' of the Civ series as it still adheres to many of the visuals and rules of the first two in the series but is the first to start experimenting with a greater focus on peaceful victories, particularly with it's Culture mechanic. There are so many variables in this game that even to this day the top players still argue about the 'best' way to achieve xyz destination and what is the 'best' way to play.

Archipelago_zps027dd807.png

Grand Ages: Rome - Gold Edition including the Augusta expansion, because the vanilla seems so lacking after the highly worthwhile additions from the upgrade, though I've yet to play Augusta itself yet, again, it's mainly for the improvements to the main game.

It's a Real Time Strategy Building game with the added bonus of mini Total War-like Real Time combat on many of the 36 individual missions which all form a coherent/historically accurate narrative of the period from pre-Julius Caesar to Octavius, including Cleopatra, Pompey, Marc Anthony and the like. There are actually 40 missions in all but on two occasions you have to choose which mission path to follow, the first of which could leave you with quite a few less missions. You play a non-active leader who levels up and buy's bonuses with rewards. There is no friendly fire but if you're not careful your buildings will catch on fire, most probably while your citizens die from the plaque during an earthquake.

id107916.jpg

Streets of Rage - Arcade version, though I've no idea if there's even any differences in versions. Not to be confused with Street Fighter games.

It's a Side Scrolling Beat'em Up which, for me, is the original and best, though I'm aware many people hold Golden Axe in this spot. You punch, slash and bash your way through the mean streets, what more do you need to know. It's double the fun co-op for two player mayhem. You cannot turn off friendly fire.

hqdefault.jpg

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic - The 3rd game in the series even though it's not Age of Wonders 3, just another classic game-numbering balls-up. Like Homm 3, there's just that something special about this one that tips it from niche-specialist into an everyone-should-play-it.

It's a 4x Turn Based Strategy game in a fantasy environment which unfolds in either missions on a campaign or one-off scenarios. It's one of those games that's not easy until you get the hang of it and then still manages to provide a challenge while also managing to be immensely fun and varied, with such golden highlights as levelling up very squishy baby dragons into big adult scary dragons.

ss_12aa618f1c8de3eee493e89301dfb59dcac2a26f.600x338.jpg

Max Damage - No, not that one, the flash game, and the original one at that.

It's a classic 50 level Physics flash game. Of all the flash games I've played, none have caught my interest like Max Damage. Some levels will have you tearing your hair out, other will be incredibly easy and some just right, but whichever, there's just something about it that's so... perfect. Max fires various projectiles from a toy cannon in the hope of damaging valuable household items. And, yes, beginning to tire now, so gonna stop and this makes 10 so...

c649dea0f5e1784f0f079b557273ec22.jpg

I would say the least perfect game (IMO) on this list is probably Civ 3 but that's the one I've put the most hours in and play most regularly.

Yeah, we should create a different thread about games you can replay the most. This one has become full of nostalgia stuff that nobody ever replays. Seriously, how many times can you replay Monkey Island? It's a great game, but not something you'll play again and again.

That would be impossible to produce. This is the closest I can get:

Neverwinter Nights --> SoU --> HotU + II --> MotB
The Legend of Zelda: Classic, AlltP, OoT, MM, WW
Half Life 1-2 + Episodes 1-2
System Shock 2
Fallout 1-2 + New Vegas
Arcanum
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Planescape: Torment
King of Dragon Pass
Final Fantasy VI

There's also the problem of "your personal top ten" in the subject line and "desert island games" not being the same.
Chaos Strikes Back and Ultima Underworld are among the ten best games I've played, but in no way would I considered them "desert island games" since I've already played them twice.

Playing Skyshit once was too much for me. I tried it a second time with 25000 mods installed and it didn't change the game enough for me to last more than a couple of hours.

Isometrics for me were the best ever, entire nights playing those:

Ufo: Defense
Syndacate
Cannon Fodder
Desert\Jungle Strike
Red Alert (best rts ever)
Theme Hospital
Crusader no Remorse
Baldur's Gate 1
Diablo 2
Jagged Alliance 2
The Sims 1

Funny thing is that at the time i bought Ufo and Bg1 only cause charmed by the screenshot in the box, i had no experience in both rpg or turn based, but after playing them i felt in love.
Different thing with Red Alert since Dune 2 is one of the 1st games ever played, so i knew the genre

It's probably a mental issue because i also like modern ones like Nu-xcom 1&2 or Diablo 3

This is the classic kind of list that merely demonstrates how forgetful I've gotten. Of the top of my age-addled head, here are the games that most consumed me at various points of my life:

- Super Mario World - An entire summer of my childhood, when summers lasted forever.
- Starcraft: Brood War - But for this, I can only imagine the things I could've achieved in college.
- Left 4 Dead 2 - I'm not even sure it's good, but man did I waste time on it. (Enemy Territory was barely beaten out here.)
- X-Com - Nothing like naming your squaddies after you family, and then hating your family for missing point-blank plasma bursts.
- Gladiator (DOS shareware) - Three player action hotseat on one keyboard. "STOP JAMMING MY KEYS!" Too bad the cleric becomes unbalanced.
- Star Control 2 - I still have PTSD from the punches I received in super melee. "Launch fighters."
- NBA Jam (Sega Genesis) - I once beat a fairly serious player using my toes.
- Doom - Death matches. Aliens TC. Hell, just the single player campaign. Real deal.
- Final Fantasy III/6 - I can't believe I fell for the General Leo hoax. :( Excluding Primordia, I've never gotten as much fan mail as I did for a piece of FF3 fan fiction. Not sure who should be more ashamed, the author or the fans.
- Contra - I can still beat the first level with my eyes closed.

There are plenty of other games that I think much more highly of in terms of their story, design, etc., etc. And plenty of other games that had a more demonstrable impact (for example, by inspiring me to make Primordia or to work on TTON or whatever.) But in terms of "revealed preference," these probably win out.

Amusing that not a single adventure game made the cut
Nor a single proper RPG. But the truth is what it is. I really liked a few adventure games over the years, but you can't really sink tons of time into an adventure. It would be really hard for me to put together the ten games that are most meaningful to me, or the ten that I think most highly of, or any other measure, but the ten that I spent the most time on is relatively easy.

I guess I could do something like "games that hooked me on the genre" or something, in which case I could put Loom, Darksun: Shattered Lands, Wing Commander 2, etc.

I totally get that... I'm writing a goddamn book on CRPGs, and although I love Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Morrowind & Dark Souls, if I had to pick just ONE series it would probably be Dynasty Warriors. :3

Keep in mind I haven't played many games during my soon-to-be 24 years of age. Until I was around 10 I only played Famicom videogames, and a limited selection at that.

In the order I played them:

Ffixbox.jpg

1 - Final Fantasy IX: beautiful game. A masterpiece. To this day, I still haven't played any western RPG that has left such an impact on me. PS:T is the closest, but even then it's miles behind FFIX. It's opening titles theme sends shivers down my spine.

250px-Vagrantstorybox.jpg

2 - Vagrant Story: another masterpiece, and an underrated gem. At this point, I'm not sure whether I'm glad it didn't get a terrible sequel, or whether I still would have liked to see a sequel, no matter how bad it could have been. I played this for lots of hours, just gathering Holy Wins in the Iron Maiden dungeon to craft my perfect weapons.

Final_Fantasy_VII_Box_Art.jpg

3 - Final Fantasy VII: another great game. My first "graphics quit". I had played FFIX first, and upon seeing how ugly this game looked, I didn't play it again until a couple of weeks later. The rest is history.

Final_Fantasy_XII_Box_Art.png

4 - Final Fantasy XII: lots of Final Fantasy games in my list. Excellent in its own right.

250px-Ffxboxart.jpg

5 - Final Fantasy X: same as above. It would need to be the International edition, of course, and hopefully with no game freezing Dark Aeon glitch.

Final_Fantasy_VI.jpg

6 - Final Fantasy VI: it has to be said at this point. Unlike most of the pre-1997 pieces of shit RPGs present in the Top 70 list of the Codex, Final Fantasy games, albeit JRPGs, are truly timeless. Completely playable, they lack the elements that make those other RPGs infuriating to play, and despite their weaboo graphics, they don't make you feel like a retarded virgin dressed in a wizard's outfit while you play them. And I think it is because from the beginning they got one thing right: displacement and interaction. Later games elaborated on the graphics and the story, but the foundation was there from the start. FFVI is just an incredible game, like every other Final Fantasy title in this list.

Grand_Theft_Auto_V.png

7. Grand Thef Auto V: had lots of fun with this one. Running away from the police never gets old.

GranTurismo6.jpg

8. Gran Turismo 6: arguably the worst Gran Turismo game of the franchise and I have my reasons to back it up. First, GT5 was officially the worst. GT6 did not only barely improve on the game, it still didn't fit the shoes of what Gran Turismo 5 should have been to begin with. But it's the "best" Gran Turismo from an objective point of view. It's just a disappointing game.

Fallout_New_Vegas.jpg

9 - Fallout: New Vegas: my third computer RPG. I still have to beat it and complete Old World Blues and Dead Money. If Skyrim keeps me playing because of its sheer size, New Vegas will keep me playing because of its sheer replayability.

FIFA_14.jpeg

10 - FIFA 14: I liked FIFA 14. I didn't like the cheating AI bastard from FIFA 15, and I haven't played FIFA 16. But I love the career mode, using just one player, and moving my way up the best clubs. Definitely something I would play a lot.

Honorable mentions:

- Gran Turismo 2 & 4: they could have been so much better games if Polyphony could actually code good AI. As it is, the only way you will ever have a challenging race is if you use a really underpowered car, or if you play blindfold with just one hand. As such, I would only play these for the time trial factor, but then again, I can do that in GT6 too, and the game looks better and has better physics to boot.
- Morrowind: because I asume mods are a no go, I have to leave this out. The game simply looks too ugly, it is too broken, and thus I have no intention to play it as is. I need mods to at least add distant land, shaders, and correct its broken mess of balance.

You should move at least FF VI to the first place.

Shmups:

1. R-Type (undisputed champion here)
2. X-Multiply
3. Gradius II
4. Gradius
5. In the Hunt (I don't know if count)
6. Hydorah

CRPGs

1. Wizardry: The Return of Werdna (by now)
2. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
3. Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
4. Fallout
5. Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
6. Wasteland
7. Ultima III: Exodus
8. Wizardry: Legacy of Llylgamyn
9. Questron
10. Ultima

With the other genres I'm messed up, I don't remember very well to make a top.

It's the order I played them in.

Of course, my first console was a PS1, then a PS2, later a PS3, and finally a good PC to play games with.

Before this computer, "PC gaming" meant Worms World Party and Sim City 3000.

on another note, do you guys buy all your favorite games to savor the memory?
I've been doing so. They're great decor (especially for those big box PC games). So far I've been fortunate to like more popular titles that have decent prices, as well as own some of the more costly games.
