Just finished Sanitarium. :) Great game, but ending is indeed disappointing.

Something is definitely not right with Gromna, who seems to be helping the bugs to take over the Cyclops' world. But why?! That shit ain't right, Gromna! I, Grimwall, shall stop you.

So let's check out the Queen's Den.

update10_1.jpg

Oh fu-!

grimwall.jpg
By the Maker! These are Cyclops babies!!

What?! You goddamn evil cyclops-monkey-baby-torturing bastard!

Let's talk to the cyclops-bug to the left there.

grimwall.jpg
Who are you?

gritza.jpg
Grr... Gri... Gritza.

grimwall.jpg
Gritza?

gritza.jpg
Yesss... that's... my name... game... claim...

grimwall.jpg
(Where) Where are you from?

gritza.jpg
Frommmmm... dumbbbb...

grimwallshepard.jpg
Where are you from?!

Grimwall don't put up with your buggy shit.

gritza.jpg
Fromm... teammm... reeemmmmm...

grimwall.jpg
(Team) Team? What team is that?

update10_2.jpg

grimwall.jpg
(Gromna) Gromna?! He was your leader... and betrayer? How did he betray you?

update10_3.jpg

Fffffffffff

grimwall.jpg
(Experiments) What has he done to you? What experiments?

gritza.jpg
Hisss quesstttt! Wwannnttttsss... tttooo lllivvvee... fforreverrrrrrr!! Sssseeeesss... iinnnsseeccttttssss... aassss thheeee... aaannnnsssswwweeerrrr!!

Seriously, immortality is his game? Forever is kind of boring, Gromna!

grimwallshepard.jpg
(Answer) What?! I don't understand! What answer?!

gritza.jpg
Bbbbbaaaaasssttttaaaaarrrrdddd!! Yyyeeeeeeaaaaauuuuugggghhhhhh!!

You ok there, Gritz? Let's just move on...

grimwall.jpg
(What) What are you doing here?

gritza.jpg
Mmmmyyyy... dddduuutttyyyy... ttoooo... tthheee Queeeen.

grimwall.jpg
(Duty) What duty is that?

update10_4.jpg

Bottles of joy huh? Sounds...nice?

... :(

grimwall.jpg
These bottles have childre in them?!

gritza.jpg
Ccclllooooonnneeeessss... Grrrrrrooommmmnnnaaa'sss... pppeeeetttssssss...

Ugh. At least it should be the proof that dick Gravin needs. Let's use the bug pincer we picked up to cut down one of the...ugh...bottles of joy.

update10_5.jpg

And take it back. But first to tell him about his teammates...

update10_6.jpg

gravin.jpg
What?! I haven't seen them since... We must save them!!

What, you never thought to ask any questions or anything? Oh well...

grimwall.jpg
I'm sorry, Gravin, but their minds are gone. It's too late.

gravin.jpg
May the Makers preserve their souls.

grimwall.jpg
(Proof) I brought you the proof you asked for Gravin. Are you going to help me.

gravin.jpg
By the Makers... Yes... of course. I suppose we should search Gromna's pod. Come on, I have his globe code.

He walks off to the pod. Wait you haven't told us the code yet!

grimwall.jpg
(Code) What's the globe code, Gravin?

gravin.jpg
'Immortal'. That's the word to unlock the door.

Pffft, I could've guessed that, I didn't need Gravin for that.

update10_7.jpg

grimwall.jpg
What are those?

gravin.jpg
They appear to be schematics of some kind. Judging by the shape and general mass, I'd say they were diagrams of the Great Machine!

grimwall.jpg
Great Machine? What's that?

update10_8.jpg

grimwall.jpg
What?

gravin.jpg
According to these notes, two parts may have been removed to aid the insectoids. I need to visit the Great Machine and see for myself.

Looking around flashes this cinematic, and leads us to discover...

grimwall.jpg
Gromna's notes... they say that the sound generator will open the worm transport tube.

There's a locker to the left, but it's locked...

grimwall.jpg
This pillow appears to be rather lumpy.

Hiding the key under his pillow?! Devious bastard.

update10_9.jpg

Cool. Let's follow Gravin to the great machine.

grimwall.jpg
(Purpose) Have you figured out the purpose of the machine?

update10_10.jpg

Well, we have the key to the worm transport tube, but the question is, where and what is it?

update10_11.jpg

It's this.

update10_12.jpg

Yuck. Grimwall just got goatse'd.

update10_13.jpg

update10_14.jpg

We pop out of the other asshole to meet...babies in cages. They're not my species but this is still disturbing.

Another insect-cyclops stands nearby.

grimwall.jpg
Who are you?

grundle.jpg
I am... Gruh... Grundle. And yuh... you are?

This guy seems more lucid than the last one.

grimwall.jpg
I am Grimwall.

grundle.jpg
Guh... guh... Grimwall the huh... hero? Too late to suh... to save us nuh... now, hero!

I'll save you if I have to kill you to do it!

grimwall.jpg
(Where) Where are you from?

update10_15.jpg

grimwall.jpg
(Sent) Sent by whom?

grundle.jpg
Cuh... Council of Peace...sent us...to suh...stop the puh... puh... plague of... insectoids.

grimwalloface.jpg
Plague? You mean the insects were going to take over the cities below?

Duh?

grundle.jpg
Yuh... yes. Uh... uh... until Gromna came up... with huh... his puh... his plan.

grimwall.jpg
You mean the Peace Treaty?

update10_16.jpg

Cybernegroes or Cyberinsects. Which one is better and why? Discuss!

grimwalloface.jpg
What?! I must warn the Council before it's too late!!

Gotta warn the "Council" of what "Gromna" is "doing".

grundle.jpg
Already... already too luh... late. Tuh... tuh... too far away... from the city... Our puh... poor people are... doomed.

grimwallshepard.jpg
(Gromna) Gromna is a traitor!!

Duh?

update10_17.jpg

Disgusting.

grimwall.jpg
(Team) Team? What team is that?

grundle.jpg
Cuh... Council of Peace... sent us... to suh... stop the puh... puh... plague of... insectoids.

grimwall.jpg
(What) What are you doing here?

grundle.jpg
I fuh... fuh... feed the... clones.

grimwall.jpg
(Clones) These aren't real children?

grundle.jpg
Ruh... real enough... for the Queen... tuh...to feed on.

grimwalloface.jpg
By the Makers!!

grundle.jpg
The muh... muh... Makers... cannot help... cannot help us now.

I agree. Only violence can help us now! Painful violence to bring justice!

We have to follow Gromna obviously. He went up the lift but it's covered by those tube-root-tendril things. There's something nearby...

update10_18.jpg

Couldn't screencap the puzzle, but basically it's a set of five grubs floating in fluids. When you push one it makes a sound. Coincidentally, the clone children hummm a tune when you click on them. Repeat the tune, and it opens...

update10_19.jpg

Allons-y!

Those wondering about the random "sighs" and "yawns", it's because FRAPS doesn't cover up the game's own button functionality, so when I press F12 it does the F12 action, which is yawning and sighing. Sorry.

update10_20.jpg

That's how she eats huh? The kids are basically attached to her body and she drains them of blood.

I hate you, game.

Another hybrid to talk to...

grimwall.jpg
Who are you?

grella.jpg
Grella. I'm surprised to see another cyclops in the Hive... especially in the Queen's chambers. You seem familiar to me... do I know you?

She seems completely lucid. Good.

grimwall.jpg
I am Grimwall.

pex.jpg
I am Pex. I put the world of Paradise Towers to rights.

grella.jpg
The Grimwall?! Of the War? But how can this be!? It must be a sign from the Makers!

grimwall.jpg
(Where) Where are you from?

grella.jpg
The city, of course. I was part of Gromna's research team... before he betrayed us.

Going over the same old stuff again.

grimwall.jpg
I don't understand... how did Gromna betray your team?

grella.jpg
It's a little complicated. But I've managed to piece it all together. I cann tell you the whole story, if you like.

Oh nice, finally the full story!

grimwall.jpg
I don't have much time... but I'd like to hear your story.

update10_21.jpg

grimwall.jpg
I don't understand. How does this surgery fit into the insectoids' plan?

I've been wondering that myself.

update10_22.jpg

I'm not sure I think much of Gromna's plan...

grimwallshepard.jpg
Why do you stay here?! Why not just escape?!

update10_23.jpg

A sad fate. No option to mercy-kill them, sadly.

grimwall.jpg
(What) What do you do here?

Can't you guess?

update10_24.jpg

Thanks for that.

update10_25.jpg

Oh? Luckily we have some tools from Gravin's shed. Using them we remove the part.

grimwall.jpg
A piece of machinery. I hope this is what Gravin wanted.

This is an adventure game. Of course it is. If you can steal random machinery, you're going to need it.

update10_26.jpg

Ewww ewww ewww.

But when we approach the flimsy bridge leading to the Great Machine, it collapses!

gravin.jpg
Oh great! Now I'm stranded here!

I don't care about you! I'm stranded on this side!

grimwall.jpg
Sorry. This flimsy stuff wasn't made to support my weight!

That won't stop us getting him the machinery.

update10_27.jpg

Perfect throw!

gravin.jpg
Oof!! Where did you find this?

update10_28.jpg

Thanks for the reminder.

gravin.jpg
This is awful! How could I have been so wrong about Gromna!!

You're kind of a tard.

When he finished installing, a small wormhole opens.

gravin.jpg
It appears to be a miniature worm hole!

grimwall.jpg
Where does it lead?

update10_29.jpg

Why don't you try? I'm willing to risk you. :smug:

grimwall.jpg
What about the second missing piece?

gravin.jpg
That could be it. Wherever it is, you must hurry and find it before the peace treaty tomorrow. Something tells me that it's nothing more than a clever disguise for a more sinister plot!

Oh you think?

There's no timer or anything despite the "you must hurry". Good thing too, because this next part really pissed me off. Searched every nook and cranny to figure out where the hell the second piece is...

update10_30.jpg

It's up that rope, which you can climb up by clicking on it.

Up there, Gromna is holding a speech, underneath the embrace of the queen, and with...bugs pointing cameras at him?

update10_31.jpg

update10_32.jpg

update10_33.jpg

update10_34.jpg

The background screens show nazi images. Subtle.

But we came here with a task!

grimwall.jpg
These controls are similar to those Gravin used to create the portal.

Oh?

update10_35.jpg

A portal opens.

update10_36.jpg

Yoink!

update10_37.jpg

I hope that was some vital part of the queen cyborg's tubing. Die a horrible death!

Another memory flashes by as we go through the portal. The answer was there the whole time! Oh?

update10_38.jpg

We're back!

gravin.jpg
My God... that's it! All along... it's been so simple!

Wait, so is Grimwall or Gravin Max' personification? I guess they both are, just different sides.

grimwallshepard.jpg
Now what?! The whole damn Hive will be bearing down on us any second now!!

Hurry, man, get to da choppa!

update10_39.jpg

Nothing like a good old pre-emptive nuclear strike to solve your problems. Why didn't they do that in the first place?

So yeah, we're in that morgue drawer now.

update10_40.jpg

This next chapter is p damn good too.

Seems like the game is slowly coming to an end. About how many more updates before it's finished?
The morgue sounds interesting... and creepy, so can't wait for the next update!

Dunno really. At least 4. At most 6. Probably 5.

It's good stuff. Dunno what everyone was on about the game taking a nosedive at the Mansion. The real :decline: doesn't set in until the chapter following the morgue rly.

You know you can change the hotkey for taking screenshots with fraps.

'cor. And I did. It promptly stopped working and I had to do half the chapter again because I hadn't noticed it'd stopped working.

We continue our pattern of going from somewhat insane in the asylum to batshit insane in Max' mind. This is an asylum portion, but...well...it's pretty insane.

update11_1.jpg

Well, we escaped the morgue drawer, at least.

update11_2.jpg

The ambient temperature is not to our hero's liking, and he wants out.

tbo.jpg
Doors have frozen shut.

No getting back into the drawer either...I'm not sure why I wanted to.

tbo.jpg
A woman's corpse. I'll be in a bag soon, too, if I don't get ouf of here.

No choice but to head up to the door...

update11_3.jpg

What the ffffuuuuuuu...

The corpse gets up and...

update11_4.jpg

Starts talking to Max.

This is pretty interesting. It's the first time Max is seeing shit that's not just weird but really pretty much impossibly insane in the sanitarium. At least, last times he's seen stuff like this (the angel, the gargoyle in the water) it signalled a transferring into the world of insanity.

So what is this? Is Max' mind losing its final, tenuous grasp on reality? Or is reality getting closer to insanity?

tbo.jpg
(Asylum) Why?! Who conspires against me?!

corpse.jpg
I can only say that if you leave, it will mean this person's downfall... But your time is short, waste not fruitless questions on me. The air grows thick with frost, and soon I must return to my eternal slumber.

tbo.jpg
(Frost) It... It's getting co- cold!!!

corpse.jpg
The temperature is dropping... They want you to sleep... like me... forever...

Locking someone into a freezing morgue seems a roundabout way to kill him...

tbo.jpg
Fo- fo- forever?!

corpse.jpg
You must escape this cold tomb, for there are other secrets frozen in time.

We'll never get out!
Actually, it's not that hard.

tbo.jpg
Need to get out of here. That door's the only way.

It's an easy puzzle, and pretty uninteresting, so no shame that FRAPS refuses to screencap this one like it does so many. Basically you have to spin a wheel and turn a lever left or right to unlock two cogs, in three steps, and then it unlocks.

We enter a pretty small area. Let's look around...

The first room is Morgan's office, looks like. It triggers a memory.

update11_5.jpg

There's lots of lootable items in here...

tbo.jpg
An empty brass urn.

tbo.jpg
A book of matches.

Sadly, the matches aren't as all-powerful as they are in The Last Express. Or Max simply is no Cath.

tbo.jpg
Dr. Morgan has an iron bust of himself. Pretentious.

update11_6.jpg

Well that's subtle.

update11_7.jpg

update11_8.jpg

Pick up the bust and toss it a few times and...we're through!

tbo.jpg
Yess!!

update11_9.jpg

Being the civic-minded people we are, we turn the valve to close the leak. And pick up the U-join lying there. The general campaign of adventure games against littering continues...

There's only one other room in the building.

update11_10.jpg

Of course.

With the gasvalve closed, it's possible to start up the oven.

tbo.jpg
How do I start this gruesome thing?

I kind of expected a puzzle there but nope, Max figures it out by himself. Unique! There's also a monkey wrench lying in a toolbox to his right. Man there's a lot of random loot in this bit. Yay!

update11_11.jpg

So now we have our own personal oven, yay! And what do we do with ovens?

update11_12.jpg

update11_13.jpg

update11_14.jpg

We burn bodies, of course!

tbo.jpg
Ug. Hope this isn't anyone I know.

You...uh...you could've checked before putting him in the oven, Max.
We roll the shelf out of the oven again, and the body left something...

tbo.jpg
A glass eye. Don't think the owner will miss it.

Of course he won't, Max, you just burned him. The body also leaves behind his ashes, and since we have an empty urn with us, we fill it. Adventure gaming logic!

update11_15.jpg

That's the statue he's talking about. Rance approves.

This is the cemetary. The forest nearby is filled with crazy-looking trees. The one to the right even has eyes! We'll take a closer look later. Meanwhile, in good tradition the gravestones contain what I can only assume are developer injokes.

tbo.jpg
The stone says, 'Eric R. Get to work you maggots.'

update11_16.jpg

More cemetary to the south. Once again, the hint isn't very subtle. We take our fresh ashes and rub 'em on the grave, which makes the words legible.

tbo.jpg
The ashes show faint scratches... a name... 'Paul Stark'.

Well that's important to know I guess...

Doesn't seem to be anywhere else to go. The door to the tomb up there is locked, so...

update11_17.jpg

Ah, but this is interesting. Meanwhile, the other pipe...

tbo.jpg
Ow! Too hot to touch!

Time to defrost us some corpses! Using the monkey wrench allows us to open the two pipes, and joining them with a U-joint means we're now pumping warm air into the morgue...

update11_18.jpg

update11_19.jpg

Now the door opens more easily.

tbo.jpg
She's dead... isn't she? Am I going crazy?

You're only starting to wonder now, Max?

The corpse is no help, she's really dead this time, so I start checking the drawers. They're all empty, looks li-

update11_20.jpg

The fuck?! How?!!?

tbo.jpg
An old man. He looks cold!

What?!

tbo.jpg
Who are you?

arthurpatrick.jpg
My name's Arthur... Arthur Patrick... Yes, that's it.

tbo.jpg
(Drawer) What are you doing in the drawer?

arthurpatrick.jpg
Last... last thing I remember, I was taking a nap in the courtyard, and then they were dragging me to some weird laboratory.

tbo.jpg
On the rooftop?

update11_21.jpg

That's some sick shit right there.

tbo.jpg
(Dr. Morgan) Morgan? He was holding a head?!

update11_22.jpg

tbo.jpg
(Scared) Being in that drawer is enough to scare anyone.

arthurpatrick.jpg
Darn right! Dark and closed in... the terrible cold... and God, that awful scratching!!

tbo.jpg
(Cold) It was a bit chilly in there, wasn't it?

What? Seriously, Max. What?!

arthurpatrick.jpg
Chilly? I damn near froze my ass off!! Started to fall asleep... must've dozed off until you came by. Did you turn up the heat?

tbo.jpg
Yes, I did.

arthurpatrick.jpg
Well, it's... its nice here now. Thank you, sonny!

Yeah, can't think of a nicer place for an old man than a thawing morgue, after all.

tbo.jpg
(Scratching) Scratching? What exactly was it?

arthurpatrick.jpg
Can't say for sure... just remember hearing these awful screeching and scraping noises nearby.

tbo.jpg
Nearby where? Outside?

arthurpatrick.jpg
It's kind of disorienting in there, you know. Sounded muffled, but... I... I guess the sound was coming from another drawer.

update11_23.jpg

I figured it must be one of the neighbouring drawers since he could hear it, but it's one on the far end...

update11_24.jpg

Hey-o!

tbo.jpg
It's dark in here. I can't quite make out what these scratches are.

Matches, don't fail us now!

tbo.jpg
The scratches don't look arbitrary. Was someone trying to communicate something?

The scratches are completely illegible. That is, until...

update11_25.jpg

Of course, the glass eye decodes it! That...doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but who am I to complain?

The full text reads (courtesy to LP Archive's LP just like all the videos):
There once was a man
who planted a tree
and spoke to it daily
in reverent rhymes.
Before the man died,
he shared it with me.
The rhyme I have spoken
to the tree many times.
Approach it with caution,
and whisper these words:
'Speak to me, tree,
lest your eyes nest with birds!'

tbo.jpg
Well, that was an eye opening experience.

:|

So what to do next? Talk to the tree with a face, of course!

tbo.jpg
Speak to me tree, lest your eyes nest with birds!

malusioensis.jpg
Nnnngghh?! Why have you summoned me, stranger? Normally it is the man with the glass eye who speaks the words of commandments.

tbo.jpg
I'm afraid he's dead. But he left behind the cryptic message that led me to you.

Well, after I burned his corpse, that is. Sorry about that.

malusioensis.jpg
Very well. What is it that you seek?

tbo.jpg
(Name) Who are you?

malusioensis.jpg
My name is Malus Ioensis. I am the guardian of the light. Protector of the grove.

tbo.jpg
(Guardian) How do you guard the light? It's all around us.

malusioensis.jpg
Fool! The light. It is housed within the heart of ancient, mighty warriors. They alone understand the true meaning of sacrifice.

A hint towards the next chapter? Nah, never!

tbo.jpg
I don't understand. What do you sacrifice?

update11_26.jpg

tbo.jpg
(Grove) Why must the grove be protected?

malusioensis.jpg
Greed, pride, evil, these aspects of humanity threaten all life. Thus I remain, and none may pass... save one.

tbo.jpg
Who?

malusioensis.jpg
The creator.

tbo.jpg
(Creator) The creator?

malusioensis.jpg
Yes. By his name only shall I be swayed from my place.

What, just his name? That's easy...

tbo.jpg
(Stark) In the name of your creator, Paul Stark, I command you to move aside.

malusioensis.jpg
Paul Stark, the creator, he who planted my seed and gave me life. In his name I do as commanded.

He mosies out of the way.

update11_27.jpg

That's wonderful. Beautiful. Magical.

YOINK!

update11_28.jpg

Was stuck again for a little bit until I noticed this. Use the prism in the beam and...

tbo.jpg
Yes! The light... it's opening the door!

update11_29.jpg

Morgan! I got you now, monster!

update11_30.jpg

The hell? He...zaps into the machine.

tboshepard.jpg
Damn you, Morgan!

Filled with impotent rage, Max is a true :x

Must be some way to follow him. Let's look around.

tbo.jpg
A globe... Pencil marks on Central America...

tbo.jpg
Looks like an Aztec calender... but something's wrong. There's a device hooked up to it.

tbo.jpg
The secret to activating the device appears to be the use of five distinct symbols.

The puzzle itself gives little clues to its solution, but if we look around...

update11_31.jpg

That's a clue to the 5th symbol. Look around, we find the other four notes both in this building as in Morgan's office.
In order:

tbo.jpg
'Their cosmic structure was simple. Earth below, in the form of twin mountains. The sun and starts above. Over these, another world exists, one beyond this life.' There's a number one written next to this passage.

tbo.jpg
Someone wrote the number two here. 'The sunrise figured largely into Aztec culture.

tbo.jpg
The number three is written on this page. 'In this carving, the sun in the valley represents a king on his throne. A small circle at the bottom of the heiroglyph symbolizes the king's subject and the world at his feet.' Looks like there was a picture, but it's been ripped out.

tbo.jpg
Number four is written here. 'Aztec culture emphasizes visual components. Thus, the image of an eye wide open is repeated often in wall carvings.'

update11_32.jpg

This shows the puzzle about complete. The two buttons between each image flip the second half of one image and the first half of the next to the next form. Match the two to get a picture, and the writing showed you what the pictures need to show.
That is: 1. Two mountains and a sun (right half of that image is yet to be correctly set). 2. A large sun. 3. A sun in a valley. 4. An eye. 5. A pyramid.

update11_33.jpg

update11_34.jpg

I AM BECOME A GOD!

I like how his first question to a corpse that has just awakened in a morgue is "what?! someone is conspiring against me?"

Awesome. Sadly, we're very close to the endgame (worse, the Aztec Land is the weakest part of the game, to compensate the final level is absolute mindfuck).

The Lost village! As foretold by Don back in chapter 1.

So what happened here?

update12_1.jpg

Got summoned by the wise woman is what.

olmec.jpg
Old woman! What is your station?

teteo.jpg
By the great spirits! You have arrived... I thought your arrival to be merely a vision, but here you stand... Olmec, the holy warrior! Praise the Gods!

olmec.jpg
Still your tongue, old crone. I ask your station. What is it?

Olmec telling it like it is.

teteo.jpg
Forgive me. My name is Teteo. I am the village oracle.

olmec.jpg
(Oracle) Why have you come to greet me, old one? Where is the village chieftain?

teteo.jpg
He is repairing the village, great one! Forgive us, for we are few in number.

olmec.jpg
(Village) What of this village? Why was I summoned?

teteo.jpg
It is Quetzalcoatl, holy one! He has returned!

Quetzalcoatl? Returned?!

Yeah it's doc Morgan. 'course.

olmec.jpg
What nonsense is this? He sits on his majestic throne in the heavens, not in this pathetic dung heap of a village!

You'll notice throughout this chapter that Olmec is kind of a dick.

teteo.jpg
N- n- no, sacred one! He truly has returned, just as prophesied on the Wall of Sorrow!

olmec.jpg
(Quetzalcoatl) If you speak the truth, then I must see him. Where is he?

update12_2.jpg

olmec.jpg
(Temples) The Jaguar Temple still stands?

update12_3.jpg

olmec.jpg
(Warriors) Your tale told of the Shaven head Otonmi warriors. Where are they?

teteo.jpg
Quetzalcoatl slaughtered them as if they were children... and now their shades roam the land, trapped by his wicked magic.

olmec.jpg
Shades, eh? Can they not fight still, in these new forms?

Olmec: Practical Incarnation.

teteo.jpg
Nay, fearless one, they are but lost souls, trapped between life and death. Their inability to battle their foe has driven them mad. They rant only crazed things in the voice of ghosts.

update12_4.jpg

We head up and out of the pit. For some reason you can't return down, but you don't really need to. This chapter is mostly pretty easy except that it can be a bit hard to see where you're able to go. Spent most of the time walking around trying to figure out where I was supposed to go, but the puzzles are easy.

To the right is one of the warrior shades. I'll speak to them later. One annoying bit is that they fade in and out leaving you waiting around at times, but it's not too bad.

update12_5.jpg

Clearly. Unreachable now.

update12_6.jpg

Total dick move, Quetzalcoatl.

update12_7.jpg

Classy. Up the steps is Quetzalcoatl himself, past a row of corpses.

olmec.jpg
There is the evil god himself.

Can't approach him now (didn't try at this point but will later), but you can talk to him.

olmecshepard.jpg
Quetzalcoatl! Why have you returned to this place?

Olmec has a hard time expressing emotions with that face, but there's the Shepard.

update12_8.jpg

olmecshepard.jpg
You dare speak to me in such a tone?! I have enough power to handle the likes of you!!

Spoiler: not really.

quetzalcoatl.jpg
Hah! Empty threats from a cowardly warrior!

olmec.jpg
(Village) Why do you seek to destroy those that worshipped you? You were their greatest king!

quetzalcoatl.jpg
Bah! They are loyal to none but themselves! Soon after my death they stopped offering sacrifice, and now they will pay with their lives!

Well, fair's fair, you were dead.

olmec.jpg
(Heavens) Why have you left your heavenly throne? For a god to return to this land is a disgrace!

update12_9.jpg

olmec.jpg
And then what? When there is nothing left to conquer, what will you do?

update12_10.jpg

He's got the stereotypical villain part down.

update12_11.jpg

Olmec ain't the sharpest tool in the shed.

update12_12.jpg

Obscure! But really obvious later on.

update12_13.jpg

Here we move in to the remains of the village. Olmec's heart is moved by sorrow.
Fun fact: the wives don't really have names. Olmec just calls them "woman". Total dick.

olmec.jpg
Woman! What say you? Why do you weep so?

update12_14.jpg

You can show me any amount of respect you like. Shawtee widow = shawtee.

olmec.jpg
(Husband) Who was your husband?

chalchihut.jpg
His name is Tepictoc. He was a warrior, but also the village's best fisherman. He lived off the gifts of the sea, and devoutly worshipped the Goddess of Water. The cool walls of the Water Temple were to his liking, and he often spent his days in deep meditation and prayer there.

Bla bla bla. So you're saying you're single? :smug:

olmec.jpg
(Temple) I have seen that the Water Temple is flooded.

chalchihut.jpg
Yes, by the evil one's doing. Quetzalcoatl called down a wave of water to destroy it, but it still stands proudly in the water.

Next wife of someone.

olmec.jpg
Woman! What say you?

chieftainwife.jpg
Olmec? You have come to us? Thank the gods, for our prayers have been answered!

olmec.jpg
Yes, your prayers reached me and I am here. What is your station?

chieftainwife.jpg
I am the wife of the chieftain.

olmec.jpg
(Chieftain) Why was your husband spared Quetzalcoatl's wrath?

update12_15.jpg

chieftainwife.jpg
battle with the others.

Biggest wall of text in the game as far as I know.

olmec.jpg
What happened during the battle?

update12_16.jpg

Just call her mrs. exposition.

olmec.jpg
What magics did he wield?

update12_17.jpg

olmecshepard.jpg
You speak of tradition as though it is undesirable. Your husband should be honored to be chieftain!

Indeed! Silence, woman, lest Olmec show you his pimp hand!

chieftainwife.jpg
But Olmec, oh wise one, it was never his desire to become chieftain - especially not this way! Working with the earth and revealing the secrets it hid inside brought him great joy.

olmec.jpg
Who remains in the village?

chieftainwife.jpg
There are but a handful of us left. My husband does what he can to repair the damage to the walls of the huts, but his mind is elsewhere. The death of our beloved daughter weighs heavily upon him.

We shall see later that the great chieftain's repair works consist of hitting one spot over and over with a hammer. A true artist, this mason.

olmec.jpg
(Death) She was killed in the battle?

chieftainwife.jpg
My husband insists that she was crushed beneath the boulders, which destroyed the village walls.

Goddammit, game, stop killing kiddies.

olmec.jpg
You speak as if you disbelieve your own words.

chieftainwife.jpg
I cannot help myself. I somehow feel that she still lives.

update12_18.jpg

There he goes. Fixing shit.

olmec.jpg
You there! What is your station?

chieftain.jpg
Hmph... I was the stone mason. Now I am the village chief. What are you? And why do you enter this village?

olmecshepard.jpg
I am Olmec! Holy warrior! You dare address me in that tone?!

update12_19.jpg

olmecshepard.jpg
You say I am late, but you are wrong!

Yeah! Nevermind the fact that pretty much everyone is dead, I am so right on time!

update12_20.jpg

olmec.jpg
You say your daughter is dead? How do you know?

chieftain.jpg
She was in her hut when the rocks fell! Look around you! Death is everywhere! I have lost everything that is dear to me!

:(

olmec.jpg
(Mason) You say you were the stone mason?

update12_21.jpg

olmec.jpg
There are worse fates, mason.

chieftain.jpg
I know. I have seen what happens to those who oppose Quetzalcoatl's rule.

olmec.jpg
(Quetzacoatl) His punishment is swift and severe, in death as it was in life, when he ruled this village as king.

update12_22.jpg

We pick up a copper bowl and talk to the last survivor here, an old woman sitting outside.

olmec.jpg
Old woman! What say you?

oldwoman.jpg
Man! And I'm 37. I'm not old.

update12_23.jpg

olmecshepard.jpg
What do you mean by that, bitter crone!? I am Olmec! I fight for the gods themselves!

tezacatlwife.jpg
You sound as zealous as my husband... the fool.

olmec.jpg
(Husband) What man would be mad enough to wed your sour tongue, old one?

lulz. Srsly, Olmec.

update12_24.jpg

olmec.jpg
(Errand) What errand do you speak of?

tezacatlwife.jpg
He plans on fighting that bastard undead king using his small magic! He is doomed... and will die in vain!

olmec.jpg
(Warriors) Where are your two sons? Did they die in battle?

tezacatlwife.jpg
Yes... Quetzalcoatl shattered their bodies as thought they were made of straw. Soon my fool husband will join them... and I'll be truly alone.

olmec.jpg
(Potion) What is that you are mixing?

tezacatlwife.jpg
Nothing important, holy one. Just a simple balm for my aching bones. Age has not been kind to me.

Right. So now we have to go from spirit to spirit. We have to ask each for his station and name to progress further on in this chapter, but it's really kind of boring. I'll transcribe the entire conversation with the first spirit since he's the most interesting one (sorta), but for the first time in this LP I'll cut out the dialogue for the others.

olmec.jpg
Spirit! What say you?

tepictoc.jpg
Guard... totem... honor demands... to stay true.

olmec.jpg
What name did you go by in this world, fallen hero?

tepictoc.jpg
Tepictoc... hunt the waters... bounty of... the seas.

olmec.jpg
A fisherman?

tepictoc.jpg
Yes... and a warrior... and husband...

of a shawtee...

olmec.jpg
(Totem) Why do you stand here, fallen one? What does this totem mean to you?

tepictoc.jpg
Stand where I fall... Temple of Wind... protect... even in death.

Yip, the third and final temple is behind him. We need access to each temple (you'll see why later), and we'll return to Tepictoc and the totem in a bit.

olmec.jpg
(Temple) I mean no harm to the temple. I am Olmec, holy warrior.

tepictoc.jpg
Lies... and deceptions... like the evil one! ... None may pass... all seek... to destroy.

Diplomacy path fail.

olmec.jpg
You are confused, lost warrior. I speak the truth. Quetzalcoatl, is my enemy as well. Step aside, so that I may visit the temple.

update12_25.jpg

olmec.jpg
(Test) I accept your challenge, shade. What will be this test of faith?

tepictoc.jpg
Gift... never given... wife...

Ooh, I like where this is going.

olmec.jpg
(Gift) A gift for your wife? Of what kind?

The Rance kind?

tepictoc.jpg
Glimmers... circles... neck...

olmec.jpg
A necklace? Simple enough, I will find one for her and -

update12_26.jpg

So the "test of faith" is a fetch mission? Makes...sense?

olmec.jpg
Who was your wife?

tepictoc.jpg
She... who has my... heart...

A connection to the Jaguar Temple?!
(spoiler: nope)

olmecshepard.jpg
I meant her name! What is her name?!

tepictoc.jpg
Reveal... not... harm her... you will...

olmec.jpg
(Warrior) What was your station as a warrior, spirit?

tepictoc.jpg
Young... I was...but older... than Ometech.

The station as a warrior question is the relevant one Olmec asks of each spirit, so let me just provide the names and station of the remaining spirits, before we get back to the necklace quest.

ometech.jpg
Ometech... the fearless one...

ometech.jpg
New blood... young to tribe... yet... not youngest... older than... Xilonen...

xilonen.jpg
Xilonen... the youngest warrior... of clan... unproven...

xilonen.jpg
Youngest of clan... fierce... I fought... but... no avail... dead... same as all...

mixcoatl.jpg
Mixcoatl... eldest war chief... elder brother to... Huitzilop...

mixcoatl.jpg
War chief... eldest warrior... and leader of clan...

huitzilop.jpg
Huitzilop... bearer of war... son of Tezacatl... village... witch...

huitzilop.jpg
Veteran... of many battles... younger brother... of Mixcoatl...

Got all that? We now have the name and station of five spirits, but there is a sixth in the water behind the temple that we can not reach. We'll get his info later.

So who made the necklace? The mason, duh.

olmec.jpg
Mason! I would have a word with you! I have spoken with the spirit of Tepictoc, warrior, and husband to Chalchihut.

Wait, she has a name? How do we know her name?

chieftain.jpg
The fisherman? His spirit remains here?

Does this chieftain have a name? Do we know his name too?

olmec.jpg
Yes. You have the necklace that belongs to his wife. Give it to her, or I will shatter your limbs like twigs!!

Frith in the sky, Olmec, it's not like he was refusing or anything, what's with the threats of violence?

chieftain.jpg
Very well. Tell your spirit that I will deliver his gift.

Though come to think of it, why didn't he deliver it in the first place?

olmec.jpg
(Necklace) I have spoken with the mason, dead one. He will deliver the gift as promised.

Heh. "Dead one".

update12_27.jpg

He moves aside from the totem.

update12_28.jpg

And Olmec, being a dick, tips it.

Nah he needed to do so to cross to the Temple of Winds.

update12_29.jpg

That's a lot of dead bodies.

But the entrance is blocked!

olmec.jpg
Builders are no match for the mighty Olmec!

update12_30.jpg

We enter the temple.

Awesome! We return to give the chief a piece of our mind.

update12_31.jpg

update12_32.jpg

Total Shepard moment.

chieftain.jpg
Oh, my previous daughter! I am so sorry!! Go see your mother, she misses you terribly.

Checking on the mother.

olmec.jpg
I have found your daughter, woman.

update12_33.jpg

And stop by to hit on Chalchihut.

olmec.jpg
The jewelry suits you well, widow.

update12_34.jpg

And, of course, we quiz the daughter on the Temple.

olmec.jpg
Child, why were you in the temple?

coatlicue.jpg
The shiny rock... it's pretty. And I like the music, too.

olmec.jpg
(Rock) Shiny rock?

update12_35.jpg

olmec.jpg
(Music) What music do you speak, little one?

Teach me of this thing you call rock and roll, hu-man!

coatlicue.jpg
The gongs. Sometimes I can get a few of them to make the same sound. It's fun!

update12_36.jpg

So here's the "rock" and the gongs. Really basic puzzle: you click them in order to get them all to sound at the same time. Trial-and-error basis, as all the gongs stop if you click the wrong one.

update12_37.jpg

It splinters! And inside, we find our first totem. The Wind Totem.

update12_38.jpg

And here is me looking around for the next step. You can see the 6th spirit to the right. The tree will also become important later.

In the next update I finally find the Witch Doctor. He told me what to do. He told me ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang, walla walla, bing bang.
Oh, and we finish up this chapter.

Sounds a lot like the Codex.

Also, more games need protagonists that are divine dickheads.

I think each of these "special characters" are supposed to be parts of Max's personality: Sarah would be his innocence (???), Grimwall his strength and Olmec... His pride?

That and stages of his life. Sarah is before he realizes what's going on or isn't working for Morgan yet, Grimwall is when he discovers it, Olmec is when he rises up and fights.
