Ahh Nashkel mines. The uh boring part of uh largely boring game. Yep, now I remember why I prefer BG2.

Indeed first time I had a go at this game the Nashkel mines made me rage quit. Level one party combined with kobold commandos with fire arrows, tight corridors and infinity engine pathfinding was.... infuriating.

I predict that the words "bloody hell" describes the coming update(s).

Update #14: The Nashkel Detour

In this extremely boring exciting update, we are forced to enter Nashkel in order to trigger Chapter #2 of the game.

up14_Baldr000.jpg

Immediately upon entering:
up14_Baldr001.jpg

Notice the Friendly Arm Inn in the picture - why is there, if it doesn't have anything to do with chapter #2? No idea.

codex_m.jpg
What? That's it? Can we now enter the mines?

Yes, but we'll have to explore Nashkel first, due to the 'no run-throughs' rule.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck this shit.

up14_Baldr003.jpg

Area entry stats. Still no level up in range.

up14_Baldr004.jpg

Our 'killing stats by chapter' has been reset. We'll probably not get as much XP in the rest of the game as we did in chapter #1.

up14_Baldr005.jpg

Let's get on with it and start exploring the town, all interiors included.

codex_m.jpg
You've got to be fucking kidding me!

up14_Baldr006.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What? Locked? How dare they lock the doors for me?

Yeah, to lock their own homes to prevent some crazy troll-like elf from entering. The nerve these people have!

codex_m.jpg
Are you mocking me again?

up14_Baldr007.jpg

We loot the ground floor and find some spells.

up14_Baldr009.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Could you move, lady? How am I supposed to steal from this just unlocked cupboard if you're standing here?

Maybe you could, you know, not steal from it?

codex_m.jpg
I'm curious what's inside!

up14_Baldr011.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck, only 35 gold. And the bitch called for help!

Curiosity killed The Codex? How do you think?

up14_Baldr012.jpg

codex_m.jpg
How about I share some of my wealth with you, and we forget about this little thing?

up14_Baldr013.jpg

Unlike Flaming Fist, Amnish soldiers are bribeable and you can get away with robbing people if you pay them 200 gold (100 isn't enough, if I recall correctly). There aren't many lootable containers in Nashkel that have something worth more than 200 gold, though.

up14_Baldr014.jpg

Not wanting to draw any more undesired attention, we stick to opening all the locks for hefty XP (16 per lock...), but don't look inside. Apparently people don't care if you tinker with all the drawers' and cupboards' locks.

codex_m.jpg
Maybe they think I'm the local locksmith?

up14_Baldr015.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hey, an invisibilty potion!

Yeah, it's also perfectly ok to check all the not-previously-locked containers. Nobody cares.

codex_m.jpg
Well, of course! If they would want to keep it, they would've locked it!

You don't lock your stash in Feindly Arm Inn, and You do want to keep the stuff stored there.

codex_m.jpg
That's different, it's a public inn.

How does that... Ok, fine, let's just move on and explore the rest of the town.

up14_Baldr017.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ah, yes we are the party of The Codex. Meet the sword, and the bow.

Don't forget about me.

codex_m.jpg
And ignore the disembodied voice. You probably don't hear it anyway. It's just IN MY HEAD.

up14_Baldr023.jpg

Some house.

codex_m.jpg
Can't wait for all the excitement to be found inside!

up14_Baldr024.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Shoo, to the other room, lady, dammit!

Come on, they don't have anything of value, anyway.

up14_Baldr025.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hey, what's that there?

Where?

codex_m.jpg
There, on the field!

What? There? How could you possible have noticed that?

codex_m.jpg
Keen elven senses!

Bullshit.

up14_Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
An armor of some kind. And a pearl.

The stuff in the dirt is ankheg armour (which I apparently forgot to screenshot...) - as good as full plate armour (AC = 1), but not as heavy. It also has two flaws. First one is that it counts as magical, so we can't wear it together with ring/amulet/cloak of protection. As for the second flaw - we'll deal with it later.

codex_m.jpg
Can't cast spells with it on anyway, so it's useless for me.

up14_Baldr028.jpg

We meet Edwin on one of the bridges (the XP gain seen in dialogue box is from talking to Noober, which I decided to omit here).

up14_Baldr029.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Edwin, you may kicks ass as a mage, but the time it takes for you to get to the point is infuriating sometimes!

up14_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, whatever. Do you have anything useful on you?

up14_Baldr032.jpg

The only thing of value he has is his amulat, but he won't part with it.

codex_m.jpg
The cheapskate!

up14_Baldr033.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Bye! Don't wait for me with the dinner!

up14_Baldr034.jpg

Another exciting house waiting to be explored.

up14_Baldr035.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Wow, a quest! This wasn't a total waste of time after all!

Don't lose your pants.

codex_m.jpg
Hm, pants. I have an idea.

up14_Baldr036.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Your husband is probably dead anyway, lady. I'm betting you must feel really, really lonely...

Stop.

up14_Baldr037.jpg

This time there's not even a theoretical chance she's going to leave so you can steal that stuff.

codex_m.jpg
Dammit!

up14_Baldr038.jpg

Some of subtle Bioware humor.

codex_m.jpg
I don't get it.

up14_Baldr041.jpg

And there's Minsc.

up14_Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Of course we will help you save her!

We already did save her.

codex_m.jpg
Really? When?

Gnoll stronghold. The chick that didn't have anything to pay you for her rescue?

codex_m.jpg
Oh, her. I'll just take everything of value her bodyguard has.

up14_Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Dammit!

We can't take Boo with us, unfortunately.

up14_Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
No, I only wish you to leave. The hamster, I'm okay with.

up14_Baldr046.jpg

Time to explore the garrison.

up14_Baldr047.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Right. I'm leaving right now. Honest.

up14_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
NOT!

up14_Baldr049.jpg

One of the locks here gives a quest-like message. Interesting.

codex_m.jpg
Yes. Fascinating.

up14_Baldr050.jpg

Some plot-irrelevant tavern

up14_Baldr051.jpg

This is the place in the game where you can meet Volo, if someone would like to do that for some reason...

codex_m.jpg
I don't. Let's go.

up14_Baldr054.jpg

Yet another house.

up14_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Go and check if you're not in the other room, pal, willya?

up14_Baldr057.jpg

Let's check out the inn, for the usual.

codex_m.jpg
You mean booze and whores?

up14_Baldr058.jpg

No, I mean assassins.

codex_m.jpg
Oh, right, totally forgot about them.

up14_Baldr059.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Bring it on lady, but be warned, I'm not level 2, as you're probably expecting.

up14_Baldr060.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Told you!

Wow. Three successful saves in a row. Really lucky there.

codex_m.jpg
Luck had nothing to do with it. I am simply awesome!

up14_Baldr062.jpg

The loot.

up14_Baldr064.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Helmet of Political Correctness to give the poor handicapped humans a chance. That's so sweet.

You're a racist, You know that?

codex_m.jpg
That's hurtful! Racism and The Codex don't even go in one sentence together.

up14_Baldr065.jpg

We loot the inn.

up14_Baldr066.jpg

Finally - some building with actual use.

up14_Baldr067.jpg

We cast Friends before initiating dialogue with the shopkeeper. We probably won't buy anything expensive from him, but just in case.

up14_Baldr068.jpg

The Codex' Charisma is raised to 15 for a few moments.

up14_Baldr069.jpg

This guys buys winter wolf pelts at 500 a piece.

codex_m.jpg
Pity we sold some of them to Thalantyr for a quick buck.

Back then I hoped we can avoid coming to this town at all.

codex_m.jpg
What about that Ankheg armor? Maybe I should keep it for the extra difficult combat encounters when every point of AC counts?

Maybe, you're right. Let's see how much it actually lowers your AC.

up14_Baldr070.jpg

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck! It's supposed to be green, not pink!

WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

codex_m.jpg
Stop it!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, God, this is just precious!

codex_m.jpg
I'm taking it off!

Yeah... We sell the armor. This is the second flaw I mentioned earlier. Don't know why, but it's pink instead of green when The Codex wears it. Maybe it's his internal faggotry surfacing?

codex_m.jpg
I'm warning you!

up14_Baldr071.jpg

codex_m.jpg
It would've already been done if not for the fucked up mechanics of this game! Blame the designers!

up14_Baldr072.jpg

One final place to check out here - the temple.

up14_Baldr073.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Very nice looking. Let's leave.

up14_Baldr074.jpg

Area completed!
------------------------------

Next time: We kill some kobolds. Yeah.

Update #15: Nashkel Mines, part II

After the unnecessary distraction of last update, it's time to move on with the plot:
up15_Baldr001.jpg

Back to Nashkel Mines.

up15_Baldr003.jpg

And we can now actually enter the interior.

codex_m.jpg
Nice place they have here. Roomy.

Oh yeah, it's actually our first dungeon, isn't it?

codex_m.jpg
Not counting a few caves, yes.

up15_Baldr004.jpg

Area entry stats - almost nothing has changed since the last update.

codex_m.jpg
That alone shows how incredibly exciting it was.

up15_Baldr005.jpg

Getting inside the mines took us 195 days and 20 hours. My entire first playthrough of this game, back in 1998, took about 150 game days. And yeah, I did suck at this back then.

codex_m.jpg
That means you're much better at sucking now.

Only one enemy killed in this chapter so far - the assassin girl from the inn. If some of You ever wondered how the game handles dividing XP points between classes - it's rounded up to nearest number divisible by number of classes (in this case 650 -> 651 / 3 = 217 XP per class).

codex_m.jpg
I don't think anyone ever wondered that, except the O/C morons like you.

up15_Baldr006.jpg

Most mine carts are empty or contain a lump of tainted ore, which we can't even do anything with - now or later. There are also some containers with basic weapons like swords, hammers, etc. Other than that - not much.

up15_Baldr007.jpg

Wow, a kobold!

codex_m.jpg
Why sound so surprised?

I thought they are present on level 2 and downwards. Didn't expect to meet one here.

up15_Baldr008.jpg

codex_m.jpg
These kobolds die from farting in their general direction and there are Amnish soldiers on this level. Why exactly can't they do anything to protect the miners?

Yes. Let's say it together: This doesn't make...

codex_m.jpg
...any sense!

up15_Baldr009.jpg

Most miners have names, but say nothing but fluff. Thanks, Bioware. Miner Dink Smallwood here is the only one 'relevant', as he gives us a minor fetch quest.

codex_m.jpg
Sure, I'll carry a dagger for a guy on the second level. It sounds like such a great adventure!

up15_Baldr010.jpg

Another kobold.

codex_m.jpg
So much excitement!

up15_Baldr011.jpg

Laugh if You want, but this and the other kobold are the most interesting things we found on this level.

codex_m.jpg
Yeah. That says a lot.

up15_Baldr012.jpg

Level completed!

up15_Baldr013.jpg

Onward to the 2nd one.

up15_Baldr014.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Why are we stopping?

There's something I've always wanted to try here. We'll meet a scared miner a few steps from here. After we talk to him, some Kobolds will appear and immediately spike him with arrows. Let's try to save the guy.

codex_m.jpg
Pointless, but ok, whatever.

up15_Baldr015.jpg

We prepare a surprise at the kobolds' spawn point.

up15_Baldr016.jpg

And there's the miner.

up15_Baldr017.jpg

We lure him down to edge of the area, which should place him out of range of kobolds for the one second they are alive before skull trap goes off.

up15_Baldr018.jpg

And the result. Kobolds died and the miner just disappeared.

codex_m.jpg
A success?

Hard to say, really.

codex_m.jpg
As I said, pointless. Let's go.

up15_Baldr019.jpg

There's some kobold-sweeping to be done on this floor. In fact, it's going to be our main activity here.

codex_m.jpg
Let's start, then.

up15_Baldr020.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up15_Baldr021.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not that I'm afraid of some kobolds, but running into a large group could end with an unlucky clusterfuck, so I'll scout hidden.

up15_Baldr022.jpg

Is this a large group?

codex_m.jpg
Nah, this is a small delay.

up15_Baldr023.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Sweet nightmares, hahahaha!

up15_Baldr024.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

up15_Baldr025.jpg

codex_m.jpg
MwaHAhaHahA! SLAUGHTER!

up15_Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
MWAHAHAHAHA! SLAUGHTER!

Could You, ah, stop that? You're scaring me a little...

codex_m.jpg
Sorry. These kobolds explode in a cloud of blood from the slightest touch. I kinda got lost a bit in the SLAUGHTER!

up15_Baldr027.jpg

Kobolds are using this liquid to contaminate the ore.

up15_Baldr028.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I wonder how is it supposed to work? Do they pour it by hand over every mining spot? Seems teribly inefficient. How much of this liquid do they have anyway?

Yes. Say it with me: It doesn't make...

codex_m.jpg
...any sense!

up15_Baldr029.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahah-OW! Fuck!

Fightining kobolds can barely be called combat, since The Codex' AC (effectively -3) means kobolds only hit on a critical (5% chance). That will still happen, of course.

up15_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwaha... wait, this one didn't explode.

:decline:

up15_Baldr031.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up15_Baldr032.jpg

codex_m.jpg
BOOM! HEADSHOT!

up15_Baldr033.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Head-

Not this time, I'm afraid.

codex_m.jpg
Well, ok. But close enough.

up15_Baldr034.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Some reward? No? I thought so.

up15_Baldr035.jpg

Well, it's still more XP than we got from killing kobolds on this level, probably.

codex_m.jpg
Sad but true.

up15_Baldr036.jpg

Level completed!

up15_Baldr037.jpg

We enter the third one. This is it. This is the place that haunts players in...

codex_m.jpg
Hey what's that? There, on the floor.

up15_Baldr038.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Some ring.

I bet one million GP that it's quest-related.

codex_m.jpg
I'm not taking that bet.

Yeah, it's Joseph's ring - the miner we were asked to find back In Nashkel. That corpse on the floor there is probably him.

codex_m.jpg
I want to rest a bit before we move on.

up15_Baldr039.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Whoa... trippy.

up15_Baldr040.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Foul kobolds! How dare you interrupt dreams about my divine heritage!

up15_Baldr041.jpg

This point in history marks our first usage of The Codex' divine power: Cure Light Wounds.

up15_Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here's my other divine power: Explode A Kobold In A Cloud Of Blood And Gibs By Swinging A Sword At It.

up15_Baldr043.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you, puppies! I'm trying to sleep here!

up15_Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I guess I'll just let you sleep instead!

up15_Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck! A trap!

Oh yeah, I haven't finished my rant from the beginning of this level. Wait, let me check my notes.
Here they are. Ahem. This is it. This is the place that haunts players in their nightmares when someone mentions Nashkel Mines. This level is packed with kobolds shooting from behind traps, which can only be triggered by Your party. There's a fuckton of corridors which lead to nowhere and no loot to be had anywhere.

codex_m.jpg
Is it really that bad?

No. You can pass it in two minutes. Just head southwards as far as possible and then turn east... I wish I knew it on my first playthrough. I wouldn't waste time checking covering every bit of floor here and getting my level 2 party's asses raped repeatedly.

codex_m.jpg
And we'll have to do it now too, won't we?

Yup. No run-throughs.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck.

up15_Baldr046.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Although, I foresee no passive intercourse with kobolds in the near future, as long as the sword stays in shape!

up15_Baldr047.jpg

Now that we have cure light wounds ability, we'll break no more records in resting time, I'm afraid.

codex_m.jpg
Good. That got past ridiculous ages ago.

up15_Baldr049.jpg

Kobold sweeping in progress.

codex_m.jpg
Are we really going to kill every kobold on this level?

Probably. Though, me might try to avoid some if You want.

up15_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's try then.

up15_Baldr050.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm not really here guys, just ignore me.

up15_Baldr051.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ignore me, goddammit!

Stealth seems to be working better or worse depending on the environmental conditions. Success rate is highest outside during the night and lowest outside during the day. Here, it works at about 50% of attempts.

up15_Baldr052.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Should have ignored me alla long, shouldn't ya?

up15_Baldr053.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There's some kind of kobold beer-party going on here.

You know what to do.

up15_Baldr054.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And I Will Strike Down Upon Thee With Great Vengeance And Furious Anger!

up15_Baldr055.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Just like that.

I'm kind of proud of this screenshot here.

up15_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

up15_Baldr057.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Now, look what we have here! It seems that it was worth killing them all along.

Nice!

up15_Baldr058.jpg

This wand does not just shoot a 3d6 damage lightning bolt. It shoots 6 friggin' lightning bolts at a time for a total damage of 18d6! It's basically awesome incarnate.

codex_m.jpg
Hell yeah!

up15_Baldr059.jpg

We can recognize that we are on the right path here, from it being trapped.

up15_Baldr060.jpg

And two kobolds waiting on the other side to spike us with arrows.

codex_m.jpg
I have other plans.

up15_Baldr061.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There's a big bad Codex comin' for ya, puppies! RUN!

up15_Baldr062.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

up15_Baldr063.jpg

A great opportunity to work on Your backstab there.

codex_m.jpg
Just my thought.

up15_Baldr064.jpg

40 damage. Very nice.

codex_m.jpg
I am just so awesome.

up15_Baldr065.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's try that again.

up15_Baldr066.jpg

Only 28 this time.

codex_m.jpg
:decline:

up15_Baldr067.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I could just kill them like that, but where's the fun in that?

Yeah, these guys are like censors in Psychonauts. You can safely try every method of killing on them, to Your heart's content.

up15_Baldr068.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I wish I had more spells to use, though.

We'll buy more soon.

up15_Baldr069.jpg

codex_m.jpg
How much of this sweeping is left, anyway?

There's some more ahead, I'm afraid.

up15_Baldr070.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Wow! A ghoul!

It's not only kobolds after all. How nice.

up15_Baldr071.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Too bad he doesn't provide much distraction.

That's because You should be level 2 here, not 5/5/6.

up15_Baldr072.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Spiders!

Let's not get poisoned here and die a stupid death, ok?

up15_Baldr073.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Nice spiders, go to sleep!

up15_Baldr075.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Spider sweeping. That sounds like a cool name for a skill.

What would it do?

codex_m.jpg
Well... sweep spiders?

up15_Baldr076.jpg

A quick rest before moving on.

up15_Baldr077.jpg

Some backtracking here to check all the dead ends of the mine.

codex_m.jpg
Pointless!

up15_Baldr078.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Skull trap served once!

You're quite trigger happy. You could've saved that for later.

up15_Baldr079.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahaha! Slaughter!

up15_Baldr080.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Boom. Headshot. I'm getting bored.

You don't say.

up15_Baldr081.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I wish I had left skull trap for this bunch here.

Told You.

up15_Baldr082.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll just put them to sleep then.

And the rest is history.

up15_Baldr084.jpg

Back on the way to 4th level.

codex_m.jpg
Finally!

up15_Baldr085.jpg

This is one of the sucker spots with kobolds shooting from behind traps.

codex_m.jpg
We're too smart for that, puppies!

up15_Baldr086.jpg

Careful now.

codex_m.jpg
Please! You could disarm these with a skill of 30. I have like 80 now.

up15_Baldr087.jpg

up15_Baldr088.jpg

Some more kobold-sweeping.

codex_m.jpg
Please tell me we're close to the end.

We actually are.

up15_Baldr089.jpg

Just this bunch here left.

codex_m.jpg
Not for long!

up15_Baldr091.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahaha! Slaughter!

up15_Baldr092.jpg

A clever trap setup here. The relieved adventurers should gladly march on to the next level and get pwned.

codex_m.jpg
Thank gods you have no life and remember stuff like that.

up15_Baldr093.jpg

Level completed!

up15_Baldr095.jpg

4th level. It's full-on natural caves from here.

codex_m.jpg
Egadz! How much more is ahead!?

Don't worry, not that much.

up15_Baldr096.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, slaughter and stuff.

up15_Baldr097.jpg

It's a trap!

codex_m.jpg
More like an ambush. I've got it covered, though.

up15_Baldr098.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hi, I'm Casper, the friendly ghost!

up15_Baldr100.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Are there many kobolds on this level?

No more, fortunately.

up15_Baldr101.jpg

Kobold commandos always drop 2 fire arrows - no matter how many times they shoot You with these first.

up15_Baldr102.jpg

Sorry, not fire arrows but 'arrows of fire'.

codex_m.jpg
Same shit.

up15_Baldr103.jpg

Some more enemies on this level.

up15_Baldr104.jpg

codex_m.jpg
These things should develop faster walking speeds if they really want to hunt down something.

Well, they usual eat corpses, which don't run away very quickly.

up15_Baldr105.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What is that?! Am I supposed to fight mudpools now?

up15_Baldr106.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Grey ooze. Well, it is grey. And oozy. I guess it makes sense.

up15_Baldr108.jpg

Level completed!

up15_Baldr107.jpg

Time to descend to the 5th one.

up15_Baldr109.jpg

Ok, we've hit the spot. Mulahey's lair is here...

codex_m.jpg
Finally!

up15_Baldr110.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll just blur myself and charge blindly in!

Uh... why?

up15_Baldr111.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you kobolds, you're in my way!

What are you doing?

up15_Baldr112.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here's a hint: I actually won't be merciful.

Ok, whatever, just don't come crying later.

up15_Baldr113.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You can scream for help all you want. You're dead anyway!

One of You is, that's for sure.

up15_Baldr114.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Nice place you have here, Mul. How about you and I go for a beer together after work?

Looks like he's not interested.

up15_Baldr115.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Catch Magic Missile then!

I'm really curious if You can actually pull this off.

up15_Baldr116.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Whoa... I'll just stand here, I think.

Right.

up15_Baldr117.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, I'll just sta-

See You on the other side.

Death count: 50

Anything to say?

codex_m.jpg
Nope. Let's do it properly this time.

Yes. Let's.

up15_Baldr118.jpg

We start with Blur, since that's always some advantage.

codex_m.jpg
That reminds me that we really should invest into other protection spells at some time.

up15_Baldr119.jpg

Getting rid of the superfluous enemies first.

up15_Baldr121.jpg

There's Xan here - another joinable NPC.

codex_m.jpg
Harpers, Zhentarims, elves. This iron shortage seems to be a popular quest subject around here.

up15_Baldr123.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'd rather not. I know your prisoner kind. You don't have anything valuable to, uh, contribute.

up15_Baldr124.jpg

codex_m.jpg
THXBYE.

Time for our second attempt at Mulahey.

up15_Baldr125.jpg

codex_m.jpg
How about that beer?

It turns out that Mulahey is still not interested.

up15_Baldr126.jpg

The Codex shoots some arrows to draw Mulahey's focus from his spells.

up15_Baldr127.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here! Magic Missile for You!

He's still standing.

up15_Baldr128.jpg

codex_m.jpg
How about another one then!?

up15_Baldr130.jpg

Hit with MM for the second time, Mulahey craps his pants and ceases to be a threat.

up15_Baldr131.jpg

His life ends seconds later.

codex_m.jpg
Not so tough now, without your kobolds, huh!?

Well, there actually are some kobolds there, hacking at you as we speak.

codex_m.jpg
That's beside the point!

up15_Baldr132.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUCK OFF, PUPPIES!

up15_Baldr135.jpg

Talking to Mulahey spawns some enemies at this spot. This can be a nuisance if you stand close to them while Mulahey is still alive.

codex_m.jpg
Sweeping time!

up15_Baldr140.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mission accomplished!

up15_Baldr141.jpg

Mulahey drops some reasonable loot.

up15_Baldr142.jpg

Our first magic boots. Not completely useless too.

codex_m.jpg
Completely being the keyword here.

up15_Baldr143.jpg

And a nice ring.

codex_m.jpg
This time completely useless to me.

up15_Baldr144.jpg

There's also a chest here, with more loot.

up15_Baldr145.jpg

up15_Baldr146.jpg

up15_Baldr147.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Whoa, that's a lot of stuff.

Yes. We can't possibly take it all at once, which means we'll have to make a quick travel to Nashkel store and back.

codex_m.jpg
Backtracking. Just fucking great.

up15_Baldr148.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I am awesome, I know. But keep telling me.

up15_Baldr149.jpg

Selling the stuff.

codex_m.jpg
5000 for the ring! Nice!

up15_Baldr150.jpg

We also finish up the quest with the dead miner, which frees up another precious inventory slot.

codex_m.jpg
Keep the ring lady. It's only worth, like, 5 GP anyway.

up15_Baldr151.jpg

You know, experience gained from fetch quests seems to be directly proportional to distance covered during fetching.

codex_m.jpg
Or it's just an arbitrary design decision.

up15_Baldr152.jpg

Back to the chest, where most of our stuff is now.

codex_m.jpg
I missed you so much, spare sword!

up15_Baldr153.jpg

Taking one of the scrolls triggers chapter #3.

codex_m.jpg
First, 13 chapters with no progress, and now two updates like this in a row. We're chewing through chapters like crazy.

Don't get used to that.

up15_Baldr154.jpg

Instead of backtracking to Nashkel once again, we're going to use the alternate exit, located on the 4th level of the mines.

codex_m.jpg
Why? Shouldn't we be heading to Beregost now?

Not just yet. Trust me.

codex_m.jpg
Trust you? Yeah, right.

up15_Baldr155.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Where the fuck am I, anyway?
------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time: We explore some tombs and there'a a lot of death.

codex_m.jpg
Inside the tombs, you mean?

Oh yeah, inside... and outside too.

WHOA that wand is awesome. 18D6? I dont remember using something like that. Looks like a good item for final fight. I managed to kill Thalantyr with just one lightning bolt, wonders one could do with six...

I don't remember that wand being all that deadly. Altho i used it in BG2 where it would be less spectacular, and have an aversion against lighting bolt in general anyway as they always find a way to hit you, and they hurt like fuck.

How many more filler areas are you planning to do?

I wanted to wait until I have a magical 2h sword before doing stuff like that, but if that's a challenge, I might try doing it now.

As for the lightning wands - there are two types. One fires a single 6D6 damage lightning and the other fires six 3D6 damage bolts (each targeted separately). This is the latter type one. :smug:

Just this one where we left the mines and Durlag's Tower (upper levels only).

Now that we have cure light wounds ability, we'll break no more records in resting time, I'm afraid.

And here I was beginning to think that Sarevok still had at least 5-6 years to live ! :)

Nice LP, by the way !

Update #16: Tomb Raider Jelly Killer

codex_m.jpg
So, as I asked: where the fuck am I?

up16_Baldr000.jpg

Here, basically.

codex_m.jpg
And why have we come here?

This is the shortest route to Durlag's Tower. It's just north of here.

codex_m.jpg
Right.

up16_Baldr000a.jpg

Level up is finally in visibility range.

up16_Baldr000a.jpg

Another chapter reset of stats. Over 71000 XP gained from kills so far (out of total 85700).

up16_Baldr001.jpg

Since The Codex is out of spells after the mines, we start with resting.

up16_Baldr002.jpg

We only manage to make a few steps before encountering some gnolls.

codex_m.jpg
And there I thought there would be some incline in enemy quality after Nashkel Mines.

Aren't gnolls better than kobolds?

codex_m.jpg
Barely.

up16_Baldr004.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Your eyelids become veeeery heeeeaaaavy.

up16_Baldr006.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OOH! Right in the crotch!

Ouch.

up16_Baldr007.jpg

Now that we have cure light wounds we don't need to be that cautious with avoiding being hurt. This should speed up the gameplay a bit.

up16_Baldr008.jpg

Skeletons!

codex_m.jpg
It's like High Hedge all over again.

up16_Baldr009.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hey, aren't you guys missing a skull?

up16_Baldr010.jpg

Skull trap works a little differently from fireball, but effects can be similar.

up16_Baldr011.jpg

codex_m.jpg
They were guarding an entrance of some kind.

We might as well check what's inside right now.

up16_Baldr012.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Three ghasts. I'm fucked.

Not necessarily. Remember that wand we found in the mines?

codex_m.jpg
Wand of Awesomeness? Yeah!

up16_Baldr014.jpg

codex_m.jpg
BURN! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Each ghast gets two 3d6 lightning bolts to the face, which probably won't kill any of them, but should considerably soften them up.

codex_m.jpg
The bolts seem to be returning this way...

up16_Baldr015.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW! FUCK!

Look at the bright side. Ghasts are dead. And you should be ok with the boots of grounding...

up16_Baldr016.jpg

...or not. Whoops.

Death count: 51

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
That was so stupid, I won't even call you out for it, since I somehow agreed to do it anyway. Any other ideas, maybe?

Actually, I have the same idea, but improved.

up16_Baldr017.jpg

This potion should take care of friendly fire lightning.

codex_m.jpg
Ok. Makes sense.

up16_Baldr018.jpg

codex_m.jpg
IT'S ALIVE!

Well not really, but I get what You mean.

up16_Baldr019.jpg

I only wish this wand had more charges. Oh well, we'll find another one eventually.

up16_Baldr020.jpg

There are three... I don't know... Coffins? Sarcophaguses?

codex_m.jpg
Sarcophagi, I think.

Whatever. Let's just loot them.

up16_Baldr021.jpg

Some nice loot.

up16_Baldr022.jpg

And more nice loot.

up16_Baldr023.jpg

Our first wand of monster summoning. We'll need probably at least two of these if we want to kill Drizzt. One might be enough too, with some luck.

up16_Baldr024.jpg

Magic arrows. These never hurt to have.

codex_m.jpg
Unless you have them pierced through your head, of course.

We continue our journey.

up16_Baldr027.jpg

Gibberlings!

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, right... Wait. Those actually are gibberlings!

Yup!

codex_m.jpg
Vengeance time!

up16_Baldr028.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Come on monkeys! The sword has something to tell you!

up16_Baldr029.jpg

After this pitiful incident, we move on.

up16_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Well, hello there ladies!

Watch out, they're hostile.

codex_m.jpg
I'm sure it's a misunderstanding.

up16_Baldr031.jpg

codex_m.jpg
OW! What the fuck!? That hurts!

up16_Baldr032.jpg

Yeah, I bet it does.

Death count: 52

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
What was that? No dialogue? They just started shooting!

Women. I know.

up16_Baldr033.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll approach them a little bit more carefully then.

up16_Baldr034.jpg

codex_m.jpg
HEY! I heard Desperate Housewives will be canceled after current season!

up16_Baldr035.jpg

It seems two of them don't watch television.

codex_m.jpg
Tele-what?

up16_Baldr036.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, you want to kill me for some reason I don't care. You're welcome to try!

up16_Baldr037.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's see if you can cast spells with Magic Missiles hitting you!

You do realize You will only be able to disrupt one of them?

codex_m.jpg
Uh... Wand of Lightning!

up16_Baldr038.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ha! How do you like THAT?

That one is still casting and your Horror has worn off...

up16_Baldr039.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Dammit! I must-

You must what? Oh. Hold person.

up16_Baldr040.jpg

Death count: 53

codex_m.jpg
I think it will be best to deal with them one at a time.

Yes.

up16_Baldr041.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hey! I heard Robert Pattison won't do Twilight movies anymore!

up16_Baldr042.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Easy prey.

up16_Baldr043.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Another vampire-lover coming right up.

up16_Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! Fucking rabid fangirls!

up16_Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
The cow cure will save me!

up16_Baldr046.jpg

codex_m.jpg
No more of them are running at me in blind rage. Let's scout the situation.

up16_Baldr047.jpg

She seems unaffected by the spell.

codex_m.jpg
Must be Jacob's fan.

up16_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Uh... Jacob... So handsome.

Are you alright? I swear I heard you say... oh.

up16_Baldr049.jpg

Damn.

up16_Baldr050.jpg

Death count: 54

Load game.

codex_m.jpg
Let's quickly forget that situation, ok?

You'll never believe what your last words were...

codex_m.jpg
You're right. I won't.

Luckily, we saved after killing the first two amazons, or whoever they are.

up16_Baldr051.jpg

We try another approach.

codex_m.jpg
Backstab, bitch!

Only 22 damage. What do You you want to do now?

codex_m.jpg
Just watch. Hey there, Lamalha, right? Your eyes look like sapphires in the moonlight, and stuff.

up16_Baldr052.jpg
codex_m.jpg
See? I rule!

I'm impressed.

up16_Baldr053.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll let you try a bit of hold person! See how it feels!?

up16_Baldr054.jpg

codex_m.jpg
NOT VERY PLEASANT, IS IT!?

up16_Baldr056.jpg

We make Lamalha use up her spells before charm wears off.

up16_Baldr057.jpg

She loses consciousness after casting Command on herself. It's her second-to-last spell. Unfortunately she regains senses in time to cast the last one...

up16_Baldr059.jpg

Death count: 55

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck happenned?

She cast some kind of ward spell. Not sure.

codex_m.jpg
Ok. Can we kill those bitches properly this time? I'm sick and tired of dying here!

Yeah, it's getting old. Prepare for backstabbing.

up16_Baldr060.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Well, fuck.

Great job there. I already see our impending victory.

codex_m.jpg
Enough subtleties! Wand of lightning!

up16_Baldr061.jpg

codex_m.jpg
See!? Now you can be all sparkly too, bitches!

up16_Baldr062.jpg

codex_m.jpg
If my wand isn't enough for you, I have some magic in my hands, too!

up16_Baldr064.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Too much for you to handle!? THOUGHT SO!

up16_Baldr065.jpg

up16_Baldr066.jpg

up16_Baldr067.jpg

up16_Baldr068.jpg

All four girls drop some reasonable loot, including our first plate armor.

codex_m.jpg
A little bit late for that, but I can always sell it.

up16_Baldr070.jpg

Something that might prove useful during the endgame.

up16_Baldr071.jpg

A wannabe-potion-of-protection.

up16_Baldr072.jpg

And an almost-potion-of-heroism.

up16_Baldr073.jpg

Also, a portable fireball.

up16_Baldr074.jpg

Another one of plot dreams happens while resting.

codex_m.jpg
Why do I dream of Mulahey if I also fought four presumably hot chicks recently?

Between this and Your Jacob comment from earlier...

codex_m.jpg
Shut up. Now.

up16_Baldr075.jpg

The Codex gains another Cure Light Wounds ability.

up16_Baldr076.jpg

Another tomb to explore.

codex_m.jpg
And I don't have any more potions of absorption.

up16_Baldr077.jpg

No such thing needed here. Only a ghoul and a coffin with some gold inside.

up16_Baldr079.jpg

You just can't let it go for the poor dogs, can You?

codex_m.jpg
Not my fault they attack me on sight.

up16_Baldr080.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll tell you what. If I manage to put to sleep all remaining dogs, I will move on without killing them.

up16_Baldr081.jpg

No such luck, it seems.

codex_m.jpg
Who's that guy?

up16_Baldr082.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, give me the dagger, and quick. These dogs are biting my balls off!

up16_Baldr083.jpg

Dogs manage to wound The Codex a little, before being defeated.

codex_m.jpg
My poor testicles. You're safe now.

up16_Baldr084.jpg

The dagger we got. Not bad, but it won't replace the +2 short sword.

up16_Baldr085.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What exactly was that guy talking about? Returning the dagger to someone?

Not sure, wasn't listening.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck it, then. Look, another tomb!

up16_Baldr086.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'm not sure I've met this type of enemy before.

Revenant? That rings a bell...

up16_Baldr087.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you! The dagger is mine! I almost lost my manhood getting it!

up16_Baldr088.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Feeling lucky, pal?

up16_Baldr089.jpg

Ooooookay.

Death count: 56

Loading game.

codex_m.jpg
Ok, seriously. What the fuck?

The zombie guy must have been lucky with to-hit rolls, or something.

codex_m.jpg
Uh-huh. Somehow, I doubt that. But let's try again.

up16_Baldr090.jpg

codex_m.jpg
But I'll heal myself first this time...

up16_Baldr091.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! Dammit!

Another lucky roll...?

up16_Baldr092.jpg

codex_m.jpg
FUCK!

Guess not.

up16_Baldr093.jpg

Death count: 57

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
Anything to say?

Well, before You died, I managed to notice that he's immune to your non-magical sword.

codex_m.jpg
Did you? That's nice. WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU REMEMBER THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE!?

Oh, I did, I just wasn't sure.

codex_m.jpg
I will fucking kill you someday.

up16_Baldr094.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Blur should help me stay out of harm's way.

You still won't be able to hurt him.

codex_m.jpg
I've got that one covered too.

up16_Baldr095.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Hadou... Magic Missile!

up16_Baldr096.jpg

That might not be eno... Oh, You died already.

Death count: 58

Load game.

codex_m.jpg
This guy is tough.

Let's artificially increase your toughness too, then.

up16_Baldr097.jpg

The Codex drinks potion of power and potion of stone form, and casts blur.

up16_Baldr099.jpg

This gives him AC of -6. We'll see if this is enough.

codex_m.jpg
It better be!

up16_Baldr100.jpg

codex_m.jpg
SHIT! The fuck!?

Yeah, not much has changed - the outcome is similar too (no death screenshot, sorry).

Death count: 59

Load game.

codex_m.jpg
Ok, I'm out of ideas.

I might have one.

up16_Baldr101.jpg

Let's see if undead can be backstabbed!

codex_m.jpg
I don't know...

Treat this as a science experiment.

up16_Baldr102.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Geezfuck, it better works...

up16_Baldr103.jpg

It actually did, although the damage is far from impressive.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck, fuck, fuuuuck!

And so, an epic chase around the tomb begins, with The Codex employing all his magical arsenal against the revenant.

up16_Baldr104.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Die, fucking abomination!

Magic Missile...

up16_Baldr105.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I said: DIE!

Another Magic Missile...

up16_Baldr106.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'LL KILL YOU NO MATTER WHAT!

A suicidal attack using Skull Trap...

up16_Baldr107.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Whew. Let's rest a bit to catch a breath.

You just... left the tomb?

codex_m.jpg
Yeah. Something wrong with that?

No. That's... kind of brilliant. You can now hide and backstab him again.

codex_m.jpg
Good idea!

up16_Baldr108.jpg

codex_m.jpg
HERE I AM, CORPSE-BOY!

He's down. Good job!

up16_Baldr109.jpg

Killing the revenant gains The Codex a level.

codex_m.jpg
Hell YES!

up16_Baldr110.jpg

Our loot is invisibility potion.

up16_Baldr115.jpg

The Codex levels up as a fighter. Sadly, it's the last ability gain in this class.

up16_Baldr113.jpg

Second point in two handed weapon style doesn't give as much as the first one, but every little bit helps.

up16_Baldr114.jpg

Revenant was the strongest enemy we've killed so far.

codex_m.jpg
I'd say!

up16_Baldr116.jpg

We get attacked by some dogs when trying to rest.

up16_Baldr117.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And I don't want to hear a word about 'them poor dawgs'. They'd have ripped me to shreds in my sleep.

I'm sure You'd have awakened when they had bitten Your hand off, or something.

up16_Baldr118.jpg

We have a clever idea to rest inside the tomb. Nothing hostile is attracted this time.

codex_m.jpg
I should be carrying a portable tomb with me.

up16_Baldr120.jpg

We move on and soon run into this guy.

up16_Baldr121.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yes. Fascinating.

We've already done that joke before.

codex_m.jpg
Oh, right.

up16_Baldr122.jpg

codex_m.jpg
He's a madman after all. Who would have guessed?

Not me. Completely surprised here.

up16_Baldr123.jpg

We employ uberwand once again and shoot both Narcillicus and his jellies with two lightnings each. We manage to wound him, but he turns invisible. Jellies are magic resistant.

codex_m.jpg
This doesn't bode well.

up16_Baldr124.jpg

Indeed, it doesn't.

Death count: 60

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
It seems they can't be defeated just like that. We'll have to use some kind of tactics.

Let's approach them from the other side, so we only get in mage's sight range, not the jellies'.

codex_m.jpg
'kay

up16_Baldr125.jpg

It's a partial success - one of the jellies is in range too.

codex_m.jpg
Magic Missile!

up16_Baldr126.jpg

Narcillicus turns invisible once again, and the second jelly appears too.

codex_m.jpg
I think I'm fucked.

up16_Baldr127.jpg

The Codex' skull trap is interrupted by Narcillicus' lightning bolt. If not for the boots of grounding, we would be at load/logout screen now.

up16_Baldr128.jpg

Having the boots delays that by a few seconds...

Death count: 61

Loading game.

codex_m.jpg
That goo these jellies shot at me was a very unpleasant experience for my skin. I definitely should fight them one at a time.

Let's try approaching from northeast.

codex_m.jpg
And fuck him over with the wand immediately.

up16_Baldr129.jpg

It's a much more successful tactics, as everyone can no doubt see. All six 3d6 lightning bolts hit Narcillicus (each dealing very low damage for some reason, despite no 'save vs wands' message anywhere) and he dies.

codex_m.jpg
LIKE THE LIGHTNING UP CLOSE!? YEAH, ME NEITHER!

up16_Baldr130.jpg

Jellies are probably immune to magic, but we try casting skull trap anyway, in case they can fail resistance roll.

up16_Baldr131.jpg

It doesn't work.

up16_Baldr133.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll have to deal with them the traditional way. Ready, bow?

up16_Baldr134.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Weapon ineffective? WTF?

Yeah, they are immune to non-magical weapons too. Killing them won't be tedious at all.

up16_Baldr135.jpg

The Codex begins spiking the jelly with magic arrows, each hit dealing 2 damage (3 on a critical, yay), while retreating further and further to stay out of its poisonous and slowing, but luckily short ranged projectile attack.

up16_Baldr136.jpg

Fire arrows also work, but they only deal 2 points damage from regular 'magic arrow strike'. Mustard jellies are immune to additional 1d6 fire damage...

codex_m.jpg
Of course.

up16_Baldr137.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Dogs. Just fucking great.

As usual, long-term retreating comes with some kind of surprise.

up16_Baldr138.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Down, boys!

up16_Baldr140.jpg

Since there is no time to kill them, with the jelly following us relentlessly, the last charge of wand of lightning is used.

codex_m.jpg
Farewell, you will be remembered. :salute:

up16_Baldr141.jpg

One dog survives and has to be cut down.

codex_m.jpg
Bad dog!

up16_Baldr143.jpg

Soon after, jelly is finally killed.

codex_m.jpg
YES! FUCK! YOU!

up16_Baldr144.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Maybe I can save some arrows if I backstab this thing first.

It doesn't really have a 'back' to 'stab'.

codex_m.jpg
It might still work!

up16_Baldr145.jpg

But it doesn't.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck this shit!

up16_Baldr146.jpg

Another episode of 'Run From The Jelly And Shoot Back' begins.

codex_m.jpg
Sounds more interesting that most of reality shows nowadays.

up16_Baldr147.jpg

We spare a moment during the chase to pick up stuff from Narcillicus' corpse.

codex_m.jpg
Lightning! Hell yes!

up16_Baldr149.jpg

After a long time, jelly kicks the bucket.

codex_m.jpg
Can you really say that? It had no legs...

Whatever.

up16_Baldr152.jpg

We are almost done here - we meet some gnolls while finishing up the exploration.

up16_Baldr155.jpg

But their careers soon end, along with their lives.

codex_m.jpg
Well said.

up16_Baldr157.jpg

Area completed!

But it's not all yet. We still have some content for You, noble codexer readers, as we head to Nashkel to sell some stuff.

up16_Baldr158.jpg

Dagger +2 which we fought so hard for...

codex_m.jpg
Twice! Don't forget the dogs!

Right. Well, the dagger nets us pretty nice 1K gold.

up16_Baldr159.jpg

We meet this fella' near the Nashkel Inn.

codex_m.jpg
Like hell I'm surrendering!

up16_Baldr160.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Prepare to have your work cut out!

up16_Baldr161.jpg

Nimbul starts with a cheap move - mirror image.

codex_m.jpg
I should learn it too someday.

up16_Baldr162.jpg

The Codex counters with Magic Missile.

up16_Baldr163.jpg

Two images are destroyed. Nimbul himself gets hit with one missile.

codex_m.jpg
This guy's like a weaker Borda. No sweat!

up16_Baldr164.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Here, have another Magic Missile! Some Amnish soldiers join the fight on our side, but are pretty much useless.

up16_Baldr166.jpg

Nimbul counters with his own MM, and it hurts.

codex_m.jpg
You can say that again! Nimbul! I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!

up16_Baldr167.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Shat in your pants, did you?

up16_Baldr168.jpg

Apparently not.

Death count: 62

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
This isn't fucking fair. He was panicked, right? WHY DID HE ATTACK ME?

He must've really disliked you.

codex_m.jpg
Har-dee-har-har. Let's do it right this time.

up16_Baldr169.jpg

We start with Blur.

codex_m.jpg
I would like to point out this is still the only protection spell I know.

Yeah, yeah. Move on.

up16_Baldr170.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll show you why!

up16_Baldr171.jpg

This time we Horror as an opener.

up16_Baldr172.jpg

And it works much better. The Codex start pounding at helpless Nimbul with Magic Missile.

up16_Baldr173.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This guy can definitely take some punishment.

Keep shootin'.

up16_Baldr174.jpg

We run out of M&Ms, and Nimbul wears boots of avoidance so the bow is not very effective against him. Hence another tactics: charming him.

codex_m.jpg
Really nice jacket there. I like the color.

up16_Baldr175.jpg

It actually works.

codex_m.jpg
Why wouldn't it?

up16_Baldr176.jpg

We're out of Magic Missile, but Nimbul definitely isn't. We tell him to put it to good use.

up16_Baldr177.jpg

One is enough to slay him.

codex_m.jpg
How about you surrender, huh!? Oh, wait, you can't!

up16_Baldr178.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This guy has some nice loot.

Indeed.

up16_Baldr179.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Look, a ring of 'I want to be an elf'.

Useless for The Codex, will be sold.

up16_Baldr180.jpg

Now, this is much better.

codex_m.jpg
Finally, magic boots that don't suck!

Probably the second best boots in the game, after Boots of Speed, of course. This will lower The Codex' effective AC against missile weapons to -8, which is pretty damn good at this point.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time: After this little breather episode, we enter Durlag's Tower of Doomy Doom.

codex_m.jpg
Wait, this was a breather episode?

Battle horrors vs the Codex should make the next update interesting. Once inside tho, you will have an easy time.

You'd think you'd have gotten past that nasty bandwidth exceeded screen after all the lengthy hours you put into the game.

Mirror Image is indeed very nice and powerful, one of the spells that stay useful the whole game.

Now some demon slaying?

Yeah, I thought so too. And I was wrong.

This problem should disappear in three days. I kind of fucked up the initial quality/size ratio of images, but it will be better from now on.

I'd rather not. The idea of punching through whole Durlag's Tower's dungeon doesn't seem particularly appealing. I will make up for it with killing lots of demons in BG2.

Do Durlag's Tower, you should die a lot of times there!
