UPDATE 25 - End of May

When we left off, Atlantic base had just fended off an attack.

5oj3h.png

A very small sub patrols nearby a few hours later, probably looking for the dreadnought the aliens just parked somewhere.

Z56wt.png

Our interceptor destroys it outright.

3szQD.png

Heavy Gauss are designed. It's still worse than all our sonic weaponry.

Rd8OQ.png

Contrary to what I thought, we need the clips researched as well to unlock the craft Gauss Cannon. Scientists are started on that.

BzapH.png

l3B6c.png

0UCBv.png

Three soldiers replace the fallen of the latest base defense. I now have an overabundance of snipers, I'll have to make some do scouting as well.

wX82s.png

And research on clips finishes in a surprisingly fast manner. Here is the Gauss Pistol clip. The bullet strength of 45 isn't enough to kill a gilman in one hit.

9s034.png

Next comes the Gauss Rifle clip. It's still not enough to kill a gilman in one hit...

8sQMA.png

Finally, the Heavy Gauss clip. Finally some decent firepower, but the sonic pistol is even better, while being the weakest of all sonic weapons.

gQkR0.png

Scientists are started on the craft Gauss Cannon. We only allocate 50 scientists to the task.

3ccyS.png

Out of the remaining 50, 10 are transferred to Pacific-1 to complement the 40 already present there.

vM6vy.png

Since we don't have anything critical to research until we capture a lobsterman navigator or commander, the 40 remaining scientists are sacked, to save up $1.2M on maintenance costs.

O71Ax.png

The end of the month arrives without further incident. We did extremely well, and our funding skyrockets.

p9U9U.png

This time every single organization is happy with us.

lNWw6.png

The whole $9M are sucked up in maintenance costs.

UPDATE 26 - Return of the Cruise Liner

TsPev.png

June begins by hiring a lot of technicians to fill the soon-to-be-completed workshops.

3qrcu.png

Overall $5M are spent on this, leaving us with pocket change.

zIhiu.png

Not even an hour into the month, aliens launch an attack. Another ship.

XRCv0.png

Since Atlantic team just defended their base, it's Pacific team's turn. It takes a while to arrive but Triton-2 makes it there in daytime.

ONuPW.png

Another cruise liner, just our luck. Let's hope this mission goes better than the previous one.

2xyRF.png

It doesn't start well to say the least. Juggernaut II, armed with a sonic cannon, falls under alien control. He is stunned.

yNt4i.png

Thrombone III discovers today's enemies. Calcinites. That should be manageable.

FNElN.png

Since he has a direct line of fire, he shoots between the railings and kills the alien in front of him.

vkk9n.png

Alien movement is detected on the deck above.

5hgcb.png

And good little toastboy 2 is shot down.
RIP good little toastboy 2 :salute:, you didn't make any friendly kill this time.

u0lEM.png

Even worse news, Warcupine II, armed with a sonic cannon and wearing Ion Armor, falls under molecular control!

AjEB9.png

Edward R Murrow panics, to make things even better.

TOIZ0.png

Warcupine II is stabbed repeatedly with stun rods. Five hits aren't enough to bring him down.

3EBQO.png

Desperate, Darthowski starts using his Vibro Blade. Warcupine II is drilled five times but is still standing ! Scientists really outdid themselves with this armor, it's stronger than a Lobsterman's shell.

v8YQ5.png

Out of options, Slaughter III fires a sonic blast to Warcupine's side. Finally, the soldier falls down, stunned.

rNTvT.png

Pulsers are thrown on the deck above. The first one kills good little toastboy 2's killer.

Zwmpx.png

The second one deals with an unarmed alien, probably a M.C. controller.

9fjET.png

Blasted walls allow our troops a little peek inside the ship. Thrombone finds a Calcinite looking away.

4dOqt.png

He shoots it down.

YDiH8.png

Warcupine II didn't even suffer any fatal wound from the sonic blast. He'll make it, provided he wakes up before the end of the mission.

MUZZq.png

While deploying around the Triton, Darthowski is ambushed by a Thermal Shok bomber.

HzLGD.png

He and Storyfagowski fall unconscious.

0BcC9.png

Mal shoots down a wall, and Trash gets ready to assault. Thermal Shok require a reload after each shot, so this alien can't have enough TUs to fire yet.

Note the Calcinite Thrombone II failed to kill to the south. It could do much damage.

dYSt1.png

Trash III's charge is successful.

VyaZd.png

And the aquatoid is killed.

nIHQd.png

A pulser is thrown at a Calcinite to the west. It brings it down.

XqtJK.png

Thrombone III escapes an horrible death from behind.

an1F4.png

He deals with the alien in the following turn.

vI0rX.png

BeeBee has watched the previous mission's records, and goes around the sub in case an alien waits in ambush. There is one, but it's facing the other way.

rhaBr.png

A pulser is thrown. It's dangerously close to our sub containing unconscious soldiers.

4zunL.png

Thankfully, the Triton's hull is strong enough to absorb the impact.

K6gRX.png

Soldiers begins entering the ship. An aquatoid is found by Mal.

TUl4W.png

The aquanauts steps back, kneels, takes careful aims... and misses.

2BLUN.png

Thrombone made it to the above deck. An aquatoid throws a grenade on his feet! Thrombone replies with a sonic cannon reaction fire.

85QEz.png

It kills the grenadier on the spot.

UmoE8.png

The pulser blows up... Under Armour is the weakest part of the new Ion design.

zqb9i.png

But Thrombone is completely unscathed, standing proudly among the flames.

sSaKb.png

Merk finds another Calcinite to the west.

2H5co.png

Mal shoots it down.

tSYhI.png

Golgepapaz Iki takes position to kill the guard in the corridor to the south. Trash III establishes visual contact, then retreats.

Mt5pE.png

The sniper does his job beautifully, and the threat is gone.

49laE.png

More alien movement to the west. Another Calcinite.

IHqWk.png

BeeBee throws a pulser nearby to deal with the beast, but Mal manages to shoot through the ship windows and kill the monster.

ADd6O.png

BeeBee's pulser destroys the remains of the Calcinite, as well as the stairs up. At least no more ambush can come this way.

R0rf5.png

Merk begins injecting stimulants in Darthowski, to wake him up. A full medikit is unloaded without any visible effect.

7QfBP.png

Yet another Calcinte is found, this time to the east.

kwSno.png

Trash III, always on the front line, finds the alien the following turn.

ueal5.png

Thrombone shoots through two consecutive railings, and kills the deep sea diver instantly.

SBP0G.png

A gun is lying around here. An aquatoid must have panicked.

bu5y0.png

BeeBee and Slaughter go down the western stairs to explore the bottom level. BeeBee is shot down on the alien turn.
RIP BeeBee :salute:, still no kill but you came really close this time around.

O9nU0.png

Thrombone III doesn't last long either, and falls prey to the same alien.
RIP Slaughter III :salute:, you were eagerly awaiting a promotion and finally some armor, but it's too late now.

wbV8f.png

More Calcinites on the upper deck.

OHATO.png

Also, an unarmed aquatoid. Probably the panicked alien from earlier. It could still be carrying grenades, so is still a threat.

efNVK.png

While advancing down the corridor to take the western guard from behind, Golgepapaz stumbles upon another alien.

KFwTK.png

A point blank shot kills it, which is good because it was ready to retaliate.

EmH3k.png

Thrombone misses the unarmed aquatoid.

SXD7l.png

And Trash is too weak to throw his pulser even a couple steps away.

CTyGw.png

A Calcinite shows up, but changes its mind and goes away. So does the aquatoid.

SvKL3.png

Thrombone deals with the visible Calcinite.

dyEKP.png

And Trash pursues the Calcinite, ending its life with a thermic lance stab.

ocdsH.png

Golgepapaz Iki climbs up the stairs and reveals the western guard, but misses his snapshot.

nBq0r.png

Merk loads up on ammo, as we're getting closer to the second part, and any loot left behind will be lost. He's also carrying the useless Disruptor Pulse Launcher, because I forgot to unequip it before sending the Triton away.

xjGlq.png

Golgepapaz's second shot at the aquatoid finds its target.

iI36y.png

Trash III is ready to kill another aquatoid.

rwg6p.png

But Edward R Murrow arrives before him, and kills it from behind.

mzt5h.png

Aquatoid screams are heard.

k3OPq.png

Golgepapaz Iki finds one hiding in an elevator, but there's still at least one more.

0FZmI.png

Is it in the freezer ? Attentive readers know it is, but Golgepapaz can't see it from here, although the tile is revealed.

EIT6W.png

The casino is cleared.

4p0ly.png

So is the lounge.

Qyo4q.png

The captain's quarters are void of any presence.

ntkqP.png

The control room is completely empty.

qttql.png

This is the last room we haven't explored yet.

hO0TK.png

It's empty as well.

pzNqi.png

Storyfagowski wakes up, at last. Two medikits full of stimulants were injected in his system, but it still took 30 turns for him to wake up.

gjqwV.png

Warcupine wakes up too. He came really close to death, surviving with only 4 health.

OwLLH.png

Since I don't have Darth Roxor and Black Bart Charley's skills in alien searching, and already spent far too long looking for the last alien, I gather all the loot I can and abort the mission.

8ba8Q.png

We earn a rather neutral score, it shouldn't be hard to compensate. We were definitely in good enough shape for the second part.

THE ACCEPTANCE OF DEFEAT IS AN INVITATION FOR ITS REPETITION

Also, I started another playthrough of TFTD because of this lp, and fuck me sideways, it would seem I managed to fuck up my game... again. I was pretty fucking sure I had a live deep one in storage somewhere, waiting to be research.

Turned out I didn't. And I realised that far too late when gill men terror missions no longer appear. Ufopaedia says there are mixed crews with single deep ones every now and then, but I'm already in, like, march 2041, I think, with 200+ downed UFOs, and I barely ever get ANY mixed crews, and they are always the ones *without* deep ones.

Fuckshitbitch, TFTD is the ultimate troll-game.

Are you playing v2 ? If so you're indeed screwed if you don't find a live deep one, that's one of the reasons I stay away from it and keep playing unpatched, lobstermen are easier to find if harder to capture.

As an added bonus because I repeatedly fail to make your characters live long enough to do anything, you get to choose your starting team, Atlantic or Pacific. There are vacancies to fill in either of them.

Malakal said:
Damn that was a nice mission for me. Where is my promotion?
There can only be a certain amount of officers, and all the slots are currently filled. You'll have to wait for one to die, or more since many aquanauts are waiting for a promotion as well. Remember officers are wearing Ion Armor though, so it may take a (long) while.

Assuming my latest incarnation isn't already dead, could you replace the Vibroblade (if you were planning to give him one) with a Sonic Pistol?

Great success compared to the last disastrous one, Rookies made the X-COM proud.

Nice spotter-sniper collaboration there..

Whoah, those armours are pretty crazy.
Though it may just be wheel of fortune. It's not rare to have a rookie in personal armour survive alien grenade and heavy plasma to the face while commander in flying suits gets downed just with one plasma rifle shot.

You latest incarnation got a sonic cannon. I sold all my pistols but can manufacture one for the next UCat, if you wish to enlist once more.

I don't hide my officers in the sub. In fact, I have them do most of the scouting now, since they are infinitely more likely to survive.

If this LP inspired some X-Commander to fight once more, it has already accomplished part of its goal.

UPDATE 27 - A Strange Sub

When we left off, Pacific team had just dusted off from a cruise ship apparently cleared. They would learn in the following hours that it was not.

5Zg4u.png

Facilities to test and implant M.C. chips in soldiers are finished.

CXexm.png

Workshops are constructed as well. Both Atlantic and Pacific technicians are started on building more Ion Armors.

86BNF.png

Scientists develop a rather efficient defensive module.

8e63X.png

The number of research topic is getting low.

309aS.png

Scientists begin the autopsy of an aquatoid. They don't expect to learn much from it but it can't hurt.

0Dmce.png

A large sub is found after a day passes.

B7lAn.png

Darthowski suits up in the first Ion Armor produced in Pacific base. Officers are outraged.

r4hDm.png

While on the way to the large sub, our interceptor finds a small one nearby.

wslwL.png

The Barracuda makes it to the large sub. It looks like a supply ship, maybe a colony is nearby.

83OXR.png

Our weapons out-range those of the alien sub, so we maintain a cautious distance and bring the sub down after a few shots.

9OwFI.png

Triton-1 is sent to recover the remains.

B6ORx.png

Barracuda-3, from Pacific base, manages to catch the small sub before it runs out of fuel, and shoots it down.

Ru2CK.png

Atlantic team makes it to the large sub crash site just before nighttime.

04PCn.png

Lobstermen ! That's a good thing, because we have the means to capture them now that we have Thermal Shok Launchers. The supply ship should be lead by a navigator, which we need alive.

Grl8q.png

Before engaging any alien, their M.C. chip will be read to make sure what rank they are. Checking their TUs can also hint us to possible reaction fire.

2KIw1.png

This lobsterman soldier is the weakest of the lobstermen, but is heaps above even eklektyk. What the stats don't show is the lobster's natural damage resistance, especially to explosives. Still, it has no TUs left to fire a reaction shot, so our snipers can shoot it as much as they want.

e45jq.png

KickAss Jr fires a Thermal Shok bomb, and it hits!

jZ9Y4.png

Since lobstermen have no M.C. capabilities, identified M.C. puppets load their weapons.

2F0Lq.png

ironyuri shoots at the monster, and it falls down.

aznFu.png

KickAss looks to the side and finds another lobsterman. A M.C. reading reveals it as a technician. It's a juggernaut, don't expect to get any reaction shot on this beast. More than 100 TUs means it can cross the map easily.

9vuEk.png

Still, it has exhausted more than 50% of its TUs, which means it can't fire its sonic cannon anymore. Snipers begin laying sonic blasts on it.

LW7R9.png

Oscar finds another lobster hiding before the previous one. It also has used up too many TUs to fire.

CrRvc.png

Oscar shoots at the technicians, and hits.

AckXY.png

Kickass fires a Thermal Shok Bomb. Technicians are useful aliens to capture, even if they're not top priority.

danni.png

Yeesh fires a Thermal Shok as well, which brings the technician down. Stunned lobstermen remain dangerous due to their melee attack, so we'll have to keep a close eye on this one.

zIUkQ.png

The next turn, more lobstermen are spotted at our Triton's door.

TCWt4.png

Neither of them can fire reaction shots, so our snipers continue their barrage. ironyuri hits.

NPUas.png

aRyan hits as well.

MSgP1.png

Oscar gets the killing blow.

M6K6z.png

The lobster fled during its turn, but Yeesh soon finds it hiding behind some rocks.

wYWrm.png

Two pulsers are thrown. The first one doesn't do anything.

PVy0J.png

The second explosion is accompanied by a lobsterman's death rattle. Good.

ZX83w.png

A tentaculat springs from behind the rocks during the alien turn. Tentaculats on a supply ship ? We don't remember seeing those during our previous mission.

wW1n8.png

This one decides to camp near our sub, and falls prey to our sniper squad. Banelion misses.

6B6fz.png

But Black IV adds another kill to his tally.

sE5uV.png

A stunned tentaculat lies among the lobstermen. They're even more dangerous than lobstermen.

gvNCF.png

A pulser is thrown to deal with the potential threat.

ejBhj.png

The explosion kills both the Tentaculat and the lobsterman technician. Two less to worry about.

ncedk.png

The sub is found to the east, with Tentaculats roaming inside. It looks smaller than a supply ship.

pdOKK.png

eklektyk takes out the big guns.

rioZm.png

A torpedo is fired at the center of the ship. It kills some Tentaculats.

pHWXs.png

But a lobsterman survived the direct impact.

grQjp.png

Alien movement is detected inside the sub. The shape isn't anything like that of a supply ship. It looks more like a battleship, the aquatic alien's version of a terror ship ! We were very lucky to intercept it.

g7rRv.png

While exploring to the south, Joka stumbles on a lone lobsterman.

HlT2c.png

Oscars shoots at it.

AdRdj.png

And so does Banelion, who brings the beast down.

vKNv9.png

More alien movement in the sub.

nc2OX.png

Since lobstermen are tough, eklektyk launches a torpedo in the belly of the ship to soften them up a little.

cLKMW.png

The explosion doesn't kill anything.

5bhvw.png

Alexandros finds a Tentaculat.

6ZIy1.png

Oscar shoots it but the blast fails to kill.

aKpek.png

The floating brain's M.C. chip is read. It is wounded but still very much alive. Note the insane amount of TUs the monster has, more than 140! It is thankfully crippled by its stamina, as it is exhausted and can't move as far as its TUs would allow. It's still more than fast enough to reach one of our soldiers from behind line of sight, and the insane reactions prevents any chance of retaliation fire.

pCGhC.png

Considering the extreme risk, eklektyk fires another torpedo toward the Tentaculat.

rmtUZ.png

The guided missile follows its path closely and kills the alien in a massive blast.

o4Rhr.png

Lobstermen emerge from the sub and shoot at kazgar. One sonic cannon shot hits his chest plates.

qJRz0.png

He takes another sonic cannon blast to the chest, but still stands.

AgiUD.png

A sonic rifle blast soon follows. kazgar is still standing.

jcKRL.png

A lobsterman moves into an ambush, and promptly retreats.

uZBP9.png

kazgar took some heavy damage, but he should make it.

Dc1IC.png

Snipers begin to lay fire on the lobstermen.

794bx.png

After Unkillable Cat, ironyuri hits the lobsterman and brings it down.

i0PZ5.png

Shepard runs for the spooked lobsterman and drills it to death.

V3fF4.png

Alexandros runs around the sub and takes a sniper by surprise. He's exhausted though, so he can't move any further.

C7zsJ.png

Trying to close in the distance just a little more doesn't improve his situation at all.

rNApc.png

And he's too tired to step back... He faces the lobsterman in front of him, trusting his strong armor shielding.

kgE5g.png

Oscars provides support by shooting at one of the lobstermen.

DoilO.png

The following turn, a losterman technician panics.

Ya5Ic.png

And the other one decides to try its pincers on our sturdy armor. It doesn't even dent it.

atui4.png

The western lobsterman is shot down, and Alexandros drills the one in front of him. As he begins to climb the stairs, he stumbles on another one.

jSBFu.png

It's the technician. We don't need it alive, so Alexandros kills it too.

gP63H.png

kazgar's fatal wounds are healed.

a6Kgo.png

A Tentaculat moves very close to our soldiers in the sub.

a3cbu.png

Unkillable Cat begins looking for it, but finds it just as he exhausts the last of his TUs.

IP7ie.png

Shepard finds another one to the east. Nobody can shoot it.

CEvgo.png

The following turn, Tentaculats are on the move!

u8sMF.png

KickAss somehow manages to surprise the Tentaculat near Unkillable Cat with a reaction shot!

CPDAL.png

But the stun bomb isn't enough to stop the monster's rampage. Unkillable Cat is turned into a zombie.
RIP Unkillable Cat III :salute:, you won't stay a zombie for long.

aRyan, finally in a good position, snipes the Tentaculat and kills it.

HY7mK.png

Unkillable Cat's zombie is pretty strong, but very slow. Staying away shouldn't be too hard. Its reactions are low, but don't try to kill it on the alien's turn, or the resulting Tentaculat will get a free move.

OmjxF.png

Alexandros finds a Tentaculat to the southeast.

xh8jp.png

Banelion shoots the monster from afar.

L9a71.png

Oscar needs to finish the job.

adQ9t.png

A gun lying around, with no corpse nearby ? A panicked lobsterman is close.

Pe3FF.png

Joka finds it. It's a squad leader, somewhat in between soldiers and technicians.

4FBpi.png

KickAss Jr grabs a sonic cannon and tries shooting at the zombie one handed. His poor aim doesn't help, and he misses.

Alexandros gets closer for a melee kill, but finds another Tentaculat to the southeast!

DxzBP.png

Catastrophe, the Thermic Lance stab wasn't enough to kill the Tentaculat.

Oscars ends the southern threat, but noone can help Alexandros now.

Noone except KickAss Jr, that is. The seaman throws a pulser close to him. Thrombone survived a point blank blast, maybe Alexandros can as well, and it's still better than turning into yet another loose Tentaculat.

The grenade explodes, killing both alien and aquanaut.
RIP Alexandros :salute:, a fine cannon fodder, one of the best melee fighters we had.

It's the navigator. An absolute monster, but too weak to pierce our strong armor plating.

kazgar is in a perfect position to stun.

And stun he does. Two stabs bring the crustacean down, and end the mission.

An excellent outcome, although we lost some good soldiers. The lobsterman navigator will open up many new areas of research.

Zdzisiu takes Alexandros's spot in the list of officers.

Double checking to see we captured the right one. We did.

Selling the loot gives up some more cash to begin Gauss Cannon production in full swing. With 50 scientists, research is going slowly though, and we have many more things to study and design now...
