A good thing he did, for a Tentaculat was hiding in the corner.

Almost done. :(

Azira went a bit ahead of everyone, and spots a Hallucinoid in the shadows.

He shoots it, but it's not enough to kill.

Oscar brings the beast down.

:salute: to Oscar and the rest of the crew. T'was just silly of me getting so far ahead. Guess it's just eagerness, to kill some alien scum. :M

TFTD seems to have an inverted difficulty curve, with possibly some "rollercoasters" along the way down, and this thread attests to it, considering how casualty rates diminished in the later updates and were far greater in the first ones.

The X-Com games generally have this feature. I think it is mainly because in earlier missions the human troops are strictly inferior to the bulk of aliens you meet, but you 'ceiling' at around their level (well trained aquanauts/cosmonauts with top-tier armour are usually around the same ability of the enemy troops). Further, you have to learn the game changing toys (MC, Blasters), having had to face them blind first. When you have them yourself, it is much less intimidating.

The other issue is the AI in either game isn't that great. By and large, the enemies camp out and wait for you to come to them. When you are relying on troops with no armour of flimsy vehicles, then the likelihood is for you to be whittled down. When you have spotters likely to survive a turn of reaction fire coupled with lots of MC and stand-off weaponry, you can take out the enemies piecemeal.

(I am currently going through superhuman X-Com EU. I think late game EU might be harder than late game TFTD, simply because ethereals >> mixed crew. Facing a base defence against 5 sectopods and about 18 Ethereals with a few blaster bombs is horrific.)

UPDATE 51 - The End

Last time, our team of aquanauts descended into the third and final level of the alien city.

C1gRe.png

It looks like our team managed to gather sufficient intelligence during the descent to form a plan.
We need to destroy eight power feeds to the "tomb" and kill the "ultimate alien".

7RSOm.png

We landed in a entirely new setting. It looks like an ancient temple more than a highly advanced alien city.

U4LUB.png

It looks like the alien left up a welcoming committee.

LwcUi.png

A Sonic Cannon shot doesn't kill the Hallucinoid.

jOmS7.png

As the tank retreats, its sensors detect a lobsterman in hiding.

rWwR2.png

Banelion assumes control, and spots another lobster through its eyes.

YYx4U.png

Taking control of this one as well, he spots two more alien in the same small room.

8uMiD.png

As he moves the leg of the lobsterman to maximize damage from suicide fire, a Thermal Shok is fired from a sixth alien!

sWWGu.png

Stereotypical Villain programs a torpedo's twisting path along the walls.

PPbEg.png

It follows well enough and explodes, killing everything but two lobstermen.

2VCN0.png

The doors are blasted, and our Displacer now has view of an alien behind it.

96lKp.png

lightbane, despite low odds, manages to hit it with a snap shot.

9YORD.png

Banelion moves the two surviving lobsters closer to BayBee.

8nEBL.png

The first one's death is swift.

vZAtQ.png

The second one falls down to a single stab as well.

f58pG.png

Exploring further, our tank finds another Deep One.

MwYjj.png

Banelion hijacks its M.C. chip with ease.

znodA.png

It has an interesting weapon. The only sonic weapon with auto fire.

7qSsX.png

Sadly, it's not enough to kill the Xarquid it had in view, and the reaction fire makes short work of the puppet.

6OVdC.png

aRyan aims a torpedo in the general area. It will serve to kill the alien and also blow up the doors to allow further passage of our Displacer.

s4JO7.png

It accomplishes its goal perfectly.

faURs.png

A Lobsterman decides to move closer and assault BayBee. Even though no damage was sustained, the revenge is merciless.

v7Rv0.png

Exploring a twisting path, the Displacer spots an aquatoid.

n0k2b.png

It's a soldier, but apparently it dropped its weapon.
The team heard numerous shots fired, an indication alien are going berserk.

FoF8n.png

The aquatoid is shot the following turn.

qVsBm.png

Oscar is at the front of the scouting team, and begins exploring the northern room.

ysATJ.png

He spots a stunned lobsterman. It must have fired its Thermal Shok at the wall.
A pulser is used to make sure it stays down.

0zG0r.png

These black walls are suspicious, are they a weak point in the infrastructure ?

B3aHw.png

Hmm, no they're not.

ZbZkc.png

Exploring the southern room, BayBee spots a Hallucinoid, but is too tired to retreat far.

i2BKr.png

While getting in position to assist, Slaughter spots another one!

RKCdi.png

eklektyk programs a very risky torpedo path. A slight error and it could blow up early and kill some soldiers.

GKHFu.png

It comes close to a wall, but eventually blows up in the designated spot.

tRJDD.png

And BayBee was shielded by the nearby wall, but the blast came real close, as the walls nearby attest to.

5X61A.png

Golgepapaz is up for scouting duty, and finds a Deep One.

LHanu.png

He drops his M.C. Disruptor and takes out his vibro blade. The alien doesn't resist long.

grUdi.png

Oscar moves ahead and spots an aquatoid.

BWf7w.png

He takes careful aim, kneels and misses.

FC3JF.png

The good thing is, he revealed that doors can be destroyed by Sonic Cannon fire, which means the Displacer is still of some use.
The bad thing is, there are two Tentaculats waiting nearby. Even Banelion cannot do anything to stop them.

5rWLX.png

The following turn, the floating brains feast on the turncoat aquatoid.

cXMEH.png

Another risky torpedo path is programmed by aRyan, but Oscar's life if very much at risk.

QxvOO.png

No mishap, once again. Our soldiers have some real programming skills.

iURtR.png

Exploring further, we come across a series of doors.

8oxQH.png

BayBee is desperately trying to catch up with the team, but is too tired to gain ground.

SprJY.png

After a wide and empty large room, the small corridors ridden with doors resume.

Zw6pn.png

Screams are heard as soldiers are closing in.

eyplA.png

The team assembles as soldiers get ready to assault the central area. The path has been circling around the whole map.

5NKaa.png

The final assault begins, and our tank spots a Hallucinoid in the distance.

h4f2e.png

Mal weakens it.

UnajV.png

And toastboy spotter brings it down.

zPC32.png

A pulser is used to blow up the doors. Aliens are numerous on the other side.

buJMR.png

Some reaction shots are fired, enough to stun a lobsterman.

wd35N.png

The Xarquid fires at our Displacer.

taBgK.png

Not only once, but twice.

z4kK1.png

Banelion concentrates and targets the lobsterman wielding a DPL. A point blank shot is fired at the Xarquid.

M2rqU.png

And the Displacer, lightly damaged, finishes off the controlled crustacean.

m6YuI.png

It takes two shots, but the beast is down.

trEfg.png

Exploring further, our tank spots an aquatoid.

Bk4G0.png

More cannon fire deals with the potential threat.

cKmFF.png

In a little alcove, a lobsterman is seen hiding.

kiUJ7.png

Two of them.

ms4Wb.png

Banelion takes control of them both and moves them in the central area.

Y47jy.png

Aquanauts line up and take shots at the aliens.

XFxQ1.png

The execution takes a while, as the alien shells are resistant to sonic fire.

CJ0vf.png

Pope Amole manages to miss.

B6CsL.png

Trash finishes off one alien.

oP3mn.png

aRyan ends this nonsense with a disruptor torpedo.

gY7RZ.png

The aliens are killed in the blast, and the eastern doors are torn apart.

PfQaj.png

Beyond them, an ominous device can be seen.
It looks like a casket, decorated with what looks like a mix of an Aquatoid head and a Tentaculat.

iGhUc.png

The Displacer is sent ahead, and spots a Hallucinoid.

lgI57.png

As well as a lobsterman.

FOaqK.png

The same lobsterman reveals the position of a hidden Tentaculat.

HWEWl.png

A torpedo is used to deal with the threat.

5GebY.png

In a massive explosion, the alien dies.

FmrE5.png

While firing at the Hallucinoid, our tank shots one of the blue tubes, and a scream is heard.

meleR.png

Electrical arcs shoot out of the destroyed contraption, this must be the power nodes.

v8oAZ.png

aRyan uses the last of his torpedo to deal with the Hallucinoid and destroy many tubes.

CmrUk.png

The blast is far and wide, but doesn't scratch the central sarcophagus.

NQfAh.png

It does however big damage to the nearby nodes.

e1C7q.png

eklektyk will fire the final shot, and destroy the last remaining three.

tmSOh.png

The path is simple.

cqlPy.png

And the torpedo explodes in the designated spot, destroying the last of the eight power devices.

5VDBx.png

With all power nodes destroyed, from the sarcophagus a deep voice emerges.

m0RLl.png

Our aquanauts run for their lives as fast as they can.

YFYv2.png

But a massive fireball is quick on their tails.

OzdNj.png

All around, T'leth begins to crumble.

XXOAb.png

The alien threat is finished, but will our soldiers make it back to the Leviathan in time ?

6jCdE.png

It... doesn't look like it.

For generations to come, humans will have no further contact with hostile extraterrestrials.

5pXov.png

And eventually settle planets outside good old Earth.

TlKGQ.png

Build massive cities.

pcDot.png

And develop new and exciting technologies.

xTX3L.png

X-Com is referenced in all good history books, but the decline hit hard and children seldom read anymore.
Only a few still remember the ultimate sacrifice.

ICPIf.png

It will be up to them to fight off the incoming apocalypse.

BONUS - what happens if we abort the mission:

0Ine2.png

The fully awakened T'Leth has massive firepower, and annihilates X-Com without giving humans any chance to fight back.

MKY5G.png

Then the alien city begins destroying all major human settlements.

vdse9.png

Without X-Com's alien expertise, earth nations can't do much, despite having had half a year to research some of the numerous alien guns and artifacts we sold them.

8R1f1.png

Aliens are far more effective than global warming at raising the sea level.

HJlh4.png

Humanity lives on... as a genetic product of aquatoid experiments.

Honor to the martyrs. :salute:

It's a bit of a shame that the only thing that Pope managed to do was to miss an alien, but that doesn't matters - I'm sure that his fervorous preaching was what inspired the other aquanauts to express feats of exceptional skill and bravery.

And yeah, Apocalypse LP would be so awesome...

You made the last mission look almost interesting. You should have posted a screen of the map showing how ridiculous is that long-ass corridor encircling the central chamber and then shown how many combat encounters are actually inside it
