NewBee, 97/96. 26 kills. She's managed to bring down an impressive amount of enemies in a very short time and has a decent amount of timeunits to boost, so she's one of the front-line people and have been issued with one of our auto-docs and an eternal personal shield.

You probably thought I'd abandoned this LP, didn't you? :smug:
I bet Spekkio thought so.. :M
Well, just to prove him wrong, here's another update! :salute:
A couple of low-risk missions are undertaken.

And Draco secures a couple of promotions. :salute:

More rockets. I'm a compulsive completionist in games like this, I just have to research each and every available tech, regardless whether I stand to learn something useful. :M

The upgraded chemical grenade looks nasty though. :incline:

No comment.

Ah! It seems the aliens have learned a new trick! They're now also targetting the base in Thermos! :M Let's try and see if we can shoot down the battlecruiser before it reaches the target.

41604_96778731565_115531_n.jpg

Well, what do you know, it worked. :salute:

Finally, we get an explanation of why the aliens are interested in this planet. It seems they need fuel for their mothership, and Esperanza is rich with it. In the UFOpedia screen, there's now an "Avonium storage" gauge, which supposedly signals game over, should it ever fill.

Which means it's supposedly important to stop these mining missions. To be honest though, I haven't seen the gauge move, and I doubt I can get a gameover by simply sitting and doing nothing.

So, Earth is enslaved, and the aliens have built a starport in the US. Handy.

And in this starport, an alien shuttle is parked. Hmm.. I wonder if a future mission will see us trying to make our way to an alien shuttle, so we can fly to the alien mothership and blow up the controlling brain creature?

...

Nah, too cliche, right? M:
We're interrupted in the contemplations of this by a rather rude attack on the Seathopia base.

The nightwolf interceptors were engaged elsewhere on the globe so I just had to accept the attack without trying an interception.
Before retaking Seathopia, we scramble for a salvage mission of the other battlecruiser the nightwolves were shooting down. Here we see DamnedRegistrations stunning a preacher leader.

Impressive. :salute:
Now we see him get shot in the back..

And he falls unconscious in the AoE of a flame attack...

With predictable results. Shot in the back by Drakron. I bet he's been taking advice from Eklektyk, but nothing can be proven..
1.Excessive-crying.jpg

DamnedRegistrations, your throwing skills will be missed. :salute:

anus_pounder the third also took potshots at allies, but managed to calm down before more fatalities were incurred..
For some reason, I didn't get a screenshot of Draco's promotion. Maybe I was too shaken by the friendly fire..
The next two missions are less bloody.

Donaroriak gets a spot on the transport again, now that DamnedRegistrations isn't hogging one of the two grenadier seats. He, The Thin Man the third and NewBee all enjoy promotions. :salute: Special mentions for The Thin Man the third, as he gets a total of three promotions in the space of only two missions. Xp come faster now with the more dangerous enemies. :incline:
Even with base defences up and running, the aliens seem to have little trouble invading our bases.

So I order a second base defense facility built in all secondary bases.

Draco, Canus and The Thin Man the third all receive promotions and grow increasingly deadly. :smug:
Around about this time, I decide to start production on the modules for the Centaurus project.

The first two, the living quarters and laboratory are quickly finished. Before the landing and storage unit and distribution point can be completed, we're interrupted by more UFOs. Expecting a simple recovery mission, I scramble the transport.

Phantoms! They herald the coming of the highest tier of enemies, sporting the most deadly weaponry and they're darn tough to kill as well, as you can see from this screenshot. Thankfully, the waspkeeper armour is also improving our survivability, but still care must be taken not to expose our troops too much when clearing maps.

dextermorgan the second is promoted and schooled for throwing 'nades. :salute:

Now, this is as far as I can go with project centaurus for the moment. There's something I haven't encountered yet for unlocking the last pieces of the ship, so we'll have to be patient.

The autopsy of the phantom is quickly concluded, revealing them to be Extraterrestrials Ethereals. More importantly, this unlocks the ultimate in weaponry for research, the particle weapons. :smug:
All resources are pooled into unlocking this ASAP, and we do not have to wait long.

There's no real reason to choose to wield the pistol. Just look at the rifle:

145 damage, 180 accuracy and 30 shots in a single clip. On top of this, burst fire costs only 30% of available timeunits. :incline: The only drawback of this weapon is that it's not capturable, we will have to produce all units ourselves, including ammo.

The particle cannon sports only half the ammo of the AKEW cannon, which also shoots almost twice as fast. The particle cannon has better accuracy however, so I will be refitting all interceptors with these babies as soon as I can free up enough technicians.

The Thin Man the third continues his ascent. :salute:
On the next mission, we encounter a new type of enemy.

It's easy to kill, but it sports a nasty flame-based AoE attack, so it's best to be flying when engaging these.

dextermorgan the second can take the second grenadier seat now should the need arise. :salute:

The ultimate in ship rockets. There's absolutely no reason not to produce and equip these. M:

It seems that units that use flame-based weaponry are more susceptible to chemical attacks and vice versa. Lucky for us, they also remain killable with regular weaponry. :smug:

Antimatter grenades... I cannot express the awesomeness. :incline:

:M

Storyfag gets promoted to Warrant Officer, and Pope Amole joins the SS. :salute:

The ultimate in base defenses. Yet AKEW defenses are so much cheaper both to build and maintain, and take less time to build as well, so I see no particular reason (heh) to build particle defenses..

The shields however, are a no-brainer. All interceptors can carry a shield, and the only thing that differentiates the shields are how much extra hitpoints they give your interceptor. Oh, and the price, but if you're bitching about costs, you're doing something wrong. :M

The end of the month is upon us, and you can see we're draining cash fast, due in no small part to the scientists working around the clock. That is a problem that will solve itself shortly as you will see..

:M

Hovertank with particle weaponry. :incline:
While retaking the invaded base, we come upon the ultimate in alien ground forces..

A mini-UFO!
shock.jpg

These guys are no joking matter however, as they can take a severe beating, and they sport a nasty particle weapon. They're worth a nice 40xp once you do kill them though. :smug:

Eklektyk is our first Lieutenant! :salute: Drakron is promoted to Warrant Officer, and The Thin Man the third gets to be a first class Sergeant. :salute:

To be honest, I'm not sure I will be using these improved personal shields at all, as I seem to be going through a lot of the ordinary shields in every mission. I'm not sure I'd be able to keep up with the demand, despite having 120 technicians, seeing as there's already a fuckton of other stuff they have to build, so so far I'm sticking with the basic shield, even though this is several times more effective.. :M

Doesn't-matter rocket.. M:

The Terror floater... I'm sorry, I'm just not very terrified by this picture.. The bio-drone from TFTD worked much better if you ask me. :M

On the plus side however, this represents the very last thing I could research! But the centaurus is still unfinished. I guess I need to see a larger type of UFO before I can advance the game. So, until I face and shoot down a battleship instead of the battlecruisers, we're stuck on this planet.

A swarm shows up. But there's 4 battlecruisers, and I only have 2 nightwolves that I don't want to lose unless there was a decent chance that I could bring down the leader. Unfortunately, the swarm spawned on the opposite side of the globe, and the leader flew away before I could distract its escorts and attack it on its own.

NewBee is a newbie nomore. Welcome to the rank of Warrant Officer. :salute:

I let the pacifist tag along to hold the alien detector device, and the default 5xp reward for surviving a mission lets him get promoted to private. He gets to improve his throwing skills, for throwing stun grenades..

anus_pounder the second and Artricia join the SS. :salute:

Canus too. :salute:

Here we're facing a phantom commander, and in the vain hope that capturing one such might advance the storyline, I lob several stun grenades in his blue face.

He's caught, but no new research topics unveil themselves. I guess I'll have to sit tight until a battleship shows..

And suffer intermittent attacks by battlecruisers..

I hope the next update will see us returning to Earth, even if it does signal the endgame. At present, I'm busy outfitting everyone with personal anti-gravity devices and particle rifles, while building more top-notch interceptors so I can down the battleship when it finally shows up. It's a bit tedious, and depending on how many more defense and recovery missions I have to wade through, you might get a filler update before the final missions.

Earth ahoy!

All research topics are exhausted, and still we're landlocked on Esperanza and the aliens keep on coming. I suspect we will need to down the larger cousin of the battlecruiser, the battleship. But when will one appear?

Not quite yet, it seems.

November month draws to a close, and still no battleships. I'm beginning to wonder how long I'll have to wait and keep playing cat and mouse with the invaders on this backwater planet when...

Eureka! And on the very first day of december! It's like an early christmas gift.
Now, battleships are supposedly the most fearsome UFO we're going to face in aerial combat, so I scramble all available crafts that seem likely to be able to withstand more than a single hit.

As you can see, even then, some of our crafts are close to falling to pieces.

The massed firepower wins the conflict for us.
thumbsUp.jpg

I carefully approach the crashed UFO, and once the squad is poised to enter it, I snap some shots of the layout.

Basically just 2 stories high, like a battlecruiser, but a larger footprint for the bottom floor. The top floor seems somewhat smaller however.

We manage to clear the UFO and ready it for salvage with only minor wounds sustained.

It seems the floodgates have opened. :smug:

And our lazy scientists have a project to sink their teeth into! M:

Even with two AKEW defensive buildings online, the battleships can just barge on through unless they're damaged beforehand. If the UFO manages to hit with its attack, you only lose a single defensive building, so no biggie.

And the battleship has been disassembled, and we can now research the remaining rooms for project centaurus. :incline:

Retaking the invaded base leads to promotions for The Thin Man the third and Korenzel. :salute:

Other missions are less eventful. :M

Specific UFO parts are researched, unlocking them for sale to give us another way of earning cash.

The ultimate interceptor. :salute: I immediately start production of these, to better protect against alien incursion.

Any bets on whether we need to secure one of these? :M

And the Avenger-analogue. This one also carries weapons, but alas we cannot send it unmanned to our interceptor bases, as it's classified as a transport, so we will only be building a single one of these, even though its stats surpasses the Jag-1.

Having researched the UFO navigation unit, we are now in theory able to assess the technology level of the UFOs entering the Esperanza atmosphere. We can't however, I think this is due to the difficulty level chosen. Doesn't really matter to me anyhow. M:

Even with the best armour, sometimes our soldiers still have to bite the dust. The Thin Man the third was lucky however, and we managed to staunch his bleeding and stabilize him.
Battlefield_wounds_300px.jpg

Canus advances to the rank of Warrant Officer. :salute:

It's good to know that our bros on Earth are putting up the good fight! :bro:

And cozy sleeping arrangements are made for the Centaurus..

Is there anyone reading this LP who hadn't seen this one coming?
Baldrick%20Avatar.jpg

Apparently, the aliens have perfected zero-point energy tech, sucking power from the vacuum of space!
zero_point_energy.jpg

13_4_orig.jpg

The aliens grow a massive brain to do the navigating, we build a supercomputer with an AI and straddle it with two pilots..

At least our devilfish transport is complete. This can transport a maximum of 10 soldiers, but then it also has room for two tanks. So I begin constructing to Hammer vehicles for Warcupine the fourth and DamnedRegistrations2 (couldn't do roman numerals, as the name was too long..) to pilot. :salute:

More simple salvage missions, and finally our base defenses work! :incline:

Quick to emulate, we build our own zero-point generator. :smug:

The blueprints for the final three components of project Centaurus also reach completion. I'm a bit bothered by the energy requirements of the engine injector relying on power production from avonium crystals, yet that energy cannot be harvested without the hadrons that the injector provides..
They do not explain this in the game, but for my own sake, I'll just assume they have a linear accelerator situated somewhere on Esperanza, which is powered by conventional nuclear power or something like that. :M

Swarm!
swarm.jpg

We manage to shoot down the battleship that held the swarm leader, but lost 3 interceptors in the fight, including a nightwolf. :salute:

This is the welcoming committee, squatting just outside the devilfish. How thoughtful of them..

With utmost care, the enemies are dealt with one at a time, starting with the Inquisitor that has a fire AoE attack. In the end, we manage not to get anyone killed, and Desmodus Rotundus the second advances to the rank of Warrant Officer. :salute:

The really juicy bit is the reward you get from killing the swarm leader, and I'm not talking about the cash (though that is nice too), but the unique loot.

The advanced ship parts can be fitted to any interceptor which will make it faster and stronger, and give it a larger fuel capacity. Speed is increased by 300, armour by 50. And the Jag turns a greenish colour..

new-years-eve-fireworks-display.jpg

All research into project Centaurus is completed, and our scientists enjoy a proper circle jerk.
Clio-CircleJerk-751056.jpg.jpeg

:smug:

One by one the final components for Centaurus is completed and brought online.

And a "Fly to Earth" icon appears! I'm going to wait a bit before pressing that, as I intend to give personal particle shields to all the soldiers that are being sent to attempt the final missions. Every little edge counts.
While we wait for the technicians to complete my order, the aliens keep on attacking.

Esteemed Eklektyk reaches the rank of Captain! :salute: And Donaroriak joins the SS. :salute:
All seems to be in order by now and ready for the final push. I click the button.

So, I can only bring 10 soldiers and 2 tanks, as that's what will fit in the Devilfish. Which means I'll be taking those with the best accuracy scores, and the leftovers will have to fend for themselves on Esperanza..

Donaroriak takes as many antimatter grenades as he can carry plus 8 particle shields for an added 120 points of protection. The 16 kills to his name are bound to increase. :salute:

korenzel has a slightly similar loadout, with the difference that she carries the alien life detector in one hand and a grenade in the other, leaving the medikit in the backpack. 72 confirmed kills! :salute:

anus_pounder the third. 5 extra magazines for her particle rifle. 32 kills to her name. :salute:

Desmodus Rotundus the second, 4 extra mags. 58 kills. :salute:

The Thin Man, the third. 4 mags, 24 kills. :salute:

Artricia, 5 mags. 42 kills. :salute:

Drakron, 4 mags, a bucketload of particle shields. 106 kills! :salute:

NewBee, 4 mags, personal eternal shield and auto-doc. 88 kills. :salute:

Canus, 4 mags, personal eternal shield, auto-doc and the thingamajig that blurs his outline and gives enemies 25% chance of missing completely. 53 kills, but a staggering 99 shooting accuracy. :salute:

Eklektyk... 5 mags. Personal eternal shield, auto-doc and blurrer thingie. 164 kills so far.. :salute:

Warcupine the fourth and DamnedRegistrations2 have been chosen to pilot our hammer tanks. :salute:

The people left behind are Storyfag, Draco, Pope Amole, Sov, dextermorgan the second, Lightbane and Black. Sorry guys, the others have better aim than you do. :salute:

Now, when I hit the "launch" button, I get treated to an in-game movie. But my attempts to capture this with FRAPS have met with failure. If I hit a key while the movie is running, it'll stop, no matter which key it is. And if I start the video-capture before hitting the launch key, the movie will be skipped completely. So I've settled for screenshots. Count the number, add 4 from attempts to capture it in video, and you'll see how many reloads I went through trying to get you this movie sequence.. I only wish I could've at least captured the campy music playing, but you'll have to imagine it.. M:

It's not quite as horrid as the intro movie, as there's no voice acting here, but it ain't pretty either..

Ooo! Landing in an extinct volcano! Sounds very super-villainy.
Evil_Genius_Coverart.png

Alas, there will be no base-building in the extinct volcano..

Instead, there's a single visible mission available. And this is where I leave you for now. Next time, I hope to bring you the conclusion, but that depends on how many missions the game throws at me now that we've arrived at Earth. At least I won't have to put up with incessant UFO incursions.. :M

Wounded, wounded... Oh well.

Also, you should've torrented Camtasia and recorded the movie with it. FRAPS fails too frequently when a cutscene kicks in.

Either I'm an idiot or you're trolling me. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get camtasia to record from my game, whenever it starts recording, it only records my desktop.. Can't seem to find any help in its help section either. :x

Ohwell, I'd better let this dog lie for now, before I pop a vein..

Well, it's not like I'm recording that many videos, but Camtasia works fine for me. Have you tried the "Lock to application" option maybe?

You can try CamStudio, which is free. There's also Virtualdub, but I've never tried it. Alternatively, you can PM me a save game and I can try recording that cutscene myself when I have the time, provided I can d/l the game itself first.

I've tried to lock it to application yes, but it doesn't seem to want to do this. How do I go about it exactly? When I press that option, it tends to focus on whatever window I have open on the desktop. I don't get to choose UFO ET that's running in the background for instance. And as I wrote, I could find no help in the built-in help files..

I'd like to be able to capture the vid, as there's a second one coming up I'd rather just capture for you in one fell swoop rather than having to screenshot it to pieces.. :M

Well, here's the way it seems to work for me (just tested it on Chantelise):

1. Start Camtasia, click "Record the screen"; the recording menu appears
2. Start the game, ALT+TAB back to desktop.
3. Once you choose "Lock to application", an aim cursor appears -- click on the game's minimized tray icon, and you'll return to the game and Camtasia will be locked on it
4. Press F9 to start recording, then F10 to stop

That's it. :?

Thank you Bee, I'll give that a try. If it works, then I owe you a debt of gratitude, if not, then I'll grumble a bit at Camtasia and hold no grudge towards you.

I've completed the game! Expect the conclusion later tonight.

I don't get an aim cursor when I click "Lock to application". Maybe it's something wrong with the edition of Camtasia Studio I've installed?

Nevermind, I'll mess with it more later. Now I'll go watch some football, then I'll produce the final update. M:

The end!

Alright, our stalwart group of 10 soldiers and 2 tanks have arrived on Earth and we've hidden the Centaurus in an extinct volcano.. The Monthly Report and Build New Base buttons are greyed out, as they're no longer relevant. If we click the Go to base button, we see an overview of the Centaurus.

Gone are the equip aircraft, transfer items and most importantly manufacture buttons. The first two would be useless, but it'd be nice to be able to craft ourselves some more ammo, but we'll have to make do with what we've got. We did receive fair warning before turning towards the Earth, so I shouldn't complain.
Well, now that we're here, might as well get started on the missions.

The first mission takes place in what looks like an abandoned mineshaft or somesuch. The mission is pretty straightforward. I kill all aliens, and it ends.

We find the all important SRO-2 device, and three of our soldiers receive promotions! Congratulations to NewBee and Drakron who are our new Lieutenants, and congratulations to Artricia, our new Warrant Officer. :salute:

We only have 10 scientists available, so research is a bit slower than on Esperanza. On the plus side, we don't have to put up with UFOs all over the globe, so we just fast-forward the time.
A new mission becomes available as the research topic is concluded.

This mission takes place in an urban environment, complete with trashed busses and whatnot. Here we conveniently find the plans for the starport.

We set all 10 scientists to the task of poring over the plans.
Meanwhile...

surprise-buttsecks.jpg

The mission itself is similar to base defense missions. Sit tight and most enemies will walk straight into your line of fire.

Some might manage to spew fiery death upon you first though..

Eklektyk is slightly wounded but needs only 1 day of sick leave. It takes our scientists much longer to decide on where we should attack the starport..

We'll be infiltrating the base! Sounds exciting! Maybe we'll be sneaking around, trying not to get noticed by any guards, then stealthily make off with the shuttle...

Nope. Not even an option. Instead we forge a bloody path through numerous aliens, and in the center of the complex we find the shuttle. As soon as one of our troops reaches the square outlined in red, we get the option to take off. Only the units inside the square get to ride the shuttle however, so we gather everyone around.

Someone thought it funny to place a piece of a miniature statue of liberty in this storage room. :M

...

Anyway, once all units are within the red square and we click the button, we get treated to another movie which resists attempts to capture it. Instead, I've taken screenshots for you to peruse:

This video is intended to show off the mothership as a gigantic structure, supposedly to make the player feel humble and slightly intimidated. The music is meh, and thankfully there's no voiceovers.
We land without incident, so it seems the SRO-2 worked.

No surprise here either. There's a finite amount of enemies on the map, once they're all killed, it's a simple matter of finding the brain and unloading plenty of ammo into it.

It doesn't matter where you aim your fire, first the three restrained aliens around the brain pops, and finally the brain dies.
I managed to get the extro video. :smug:

Once the video ends, we're treated to this screen:

And are booted back to the main menu when we click "OK". The end. Sort of anticlimatic, but then again, the whole game feels a bit like that.
Anyways, that is the end of my Extraterrestrials LP. I hope you enjoyed it.

Oh, and since we didn't see any shuttle leave the mothership, I guess we'll have to assume that the whole away team died in the explosion. Very TFTD-like. M:
Buh-bye! :salute:
