"Let it by all and sundry foreign nations be known
that Poles are no geese — they have a language of their own." - M. Rej, 1562

So I though it would be interesting to show my fellow Codexers that Poles not only have a language of our own but also have some nice computer games. Don't worry, this time it won't be about banging chicks in The Witcher (well, you know that because the name of the game is in the thread title, doh!) but about a point and click adventure game published in 1994 - Teenagent.

As the title suggests the story is based on the idea of a teen character named Mark (Marek in Polish version) being chosen to become a secret agent. Which also means the game was far more enjoyable when I was in the age of said character and such themes corresponded to my wishes of becoming an agent too. Nevertheless the game still defends itself with decent backgrounds (drawn by hand and later scanned), nice music, funny pop-culture refferences and absurd puzzles (well, the last one probably isn't a plus for everyone).

At it's time it was the biggest project in history of Polish video games, made by a huge team of 13 (!) people, the first Polish game with CD-ROM version, the first multiplatform title (Amiga, Amiga 1200 and PC version for both DOS and Windows), the first game with voice acting, the first game published all around the world (PC version mainly as a cover CD added to game magazines) after being translated to English and Czech.

Teenagent was one of two Metropolis Software's games I considered to be a good material for an LP with Ksiaze i tchorz (The Prince and The Coward) being the second one. Unfortunately, this game has been translated only to German* so it would mean:

1. Considerably more work for me to translate all the text on my own for the purposes of LP.
2. Game's writting (script was written by one of the most known Polish fantasy authors) would be damaged with my lame English skills.

But if you can deal with the second issue I can consider LPing The Prince and The Coward too.

* http://www.justadventure.com/reviews/GaladorPC/GaladorPrinceCoward.shtm:
Prince and the Coward, aka Galador, has a very interesting history at Just Adventure. We received this game almost 2 years ago, but could not review it until Michal, who is fluent in German, joined our staff. [R00fles! - Jim] I spoke with the Polish developers of this old-fashioned point-and-click adventure game and asked if they had any plans to translate Prince and the Coward into English for North American distribution and their response was that they were quite happy with the reception that their game had received in the European countries and had no wish for further distribution.

I've got new delivery of gold.

guard1.png
Yeah, I know. Password?

guard2.png
Bimbo.

guard1.png
All right. You can bring the gold in.

Okey dokey.

As I told you, our organisation takes care of unusual problems. Last time we solved the problem of a UFO over the White House.

fortune.png
Oh, Heally? How?

skinner.png
We shot the thing down.

fortune.png
I unsehstand. And who oh ...what was inside?

skinner.png
You want to know?

fortune.png
Oh, yes! As a fohtune-telleh I'm a cuhious person.

skinner.png
Do you really want to know?

fortune.png
YES!

skinner.png
But... REALLY REALLY?

fortune.png
YES!

skinner.png
Sorry, I can't tell you. Anyway, we need your help.

fortune.png
I'm not a secret agent, I'm a fohtune-tell...

skinner.png
I know. We have a very difficult case, which we haven't been able to solve for 6 months. We're in hopeless situation. I thought to myself, if we handle strange cases then why not use strange means?

fortune.png
And?...

skinner.png
Let me show you the phone-book. Use your powers and select a name. Maybe a fresh mind will solve the case.

fortune.png
You don't believe it will wohk, do you?

skinner.png
No, I don't.

fortune.png
This is stupid.

skinner.png
I know.

fortune.png
Okay, show me the book.

Oh, I'm sorry about my men. Sometimes they get a bit too nervous but please, let's talk...

teenagnt_073.png

mark.png
Listen, mister...

skinner.png
I know, I know. Please give me five minutes and everything will become clear.

mark.png
Go on, I always liked that conspiracy stuff.

skinner.png
Well... I'm a head of a secret government organisation called the RGB.

mark.png
Why RGB?

Becuase every kid knows secret agencies use three letter acronyms and the devs took the first one they could remeber? And if someone haven't noticed, RGB is a name of a colour palette - red green blue.

skinner.png
Even I don't know. It's so secret.

mark.png
Cool.

skinner.png
The aim of my organisation is to solve all the extraordinary problems around the world.

mark.png
Like taxes?

skinner.png
No, like UFOs, strange inventions, spirits...

mark.png
Wow!

skinner.png
Yes, when the police, the secret service and so on can't solve the problem it's delivered to ua. But... You see, six months ago, gold and cash deposited in bank safes started to disappear. Literally. Pum! And it's gone!

mark.png
And?...

skinner.png
Gone - qithout a trace. The whole thing happens in a few seconds. We have video recordings but they don't show anything. That's why we hired the fortune-teller to show us someone who could be our salvation. She has chosen you.

mark.png
I beg you pardon... You said you have hired... A FORTUNE-TELLER?!?

skinner.png
Yes, we're desperate and we'll try everything once.

mark.png
This is crazy. Mum, wake me up!

skinner.png
Relax. We have a proposal for you. Try to help us and you will be rewarded.

mark.png
What's in it for me?

skinner.png
Self-satisfaction?

teenagnt_110.png
teenagnt_112.png

skinner.png
Our respect?

Girls?

mark.png
What do you mean?

skinner.png
Every girl loves a secret agent.

teenagnt_117.png

mark.png
Ok, I agree. What am I supposed to do?

skinner.png
Before you start, I suggest that first you get some training in our special secret camp. I'll issue a pass for you. Deal?

mark.png
Deal!

teenagnt_124.png

So here we are! The training will involve completing three tasks which I'll try to present in the next update.

Teenagent is uberkvlt, but obviously, playing it in Polish is better than English, yet the translation was surprisingly very solid for its time.

It's also a free download at GoG.

Excellent more sacrifices lps, just as planned...

Keep it up and don't abandon it like some did, leaving one lp to be "iced".

Ha, I remember playing it back in the time when it was quite new. I never managed to finish it so I will be glad to see the ending at last.

How long is this game?
It isn't long, just like most of such games but it has quite difficult puzzles so figuring everything out could take some time for someone playing for the first time.

What are the differences besides the inventory system?

No English version. I may consider translating dialogues from Ksiaze i tchorz but I'm not going to do that with a game which uses such descriptions:

Awesome. Like the quirkiness.

So is this the same Metropolis that CD Projekt shuttered a while ago? (though I hear they're hiring again)

One of my favorite adventure games of all time, and the only shareware I've bought and registered. Now it's freeware and ScummVM compatible (download from your favorite torrent site GOG.com). Lots of love here.

Proceed.

Hi, we're back, as you obviously remember, Mark has been sent to a soldier camp to get some training before our mission.

teenagnt_124.png

mark.png
Hello.

guard3.png
Hi. What's your problem?

mark.png
I was sent here for some training.

guard3.png
Another wanna-be secret agent, huh?

mark.png
Yep.

guard3.png
Show me your documents and you'll get in.

mark.png
Okey dokey.

teenagnt_132.png

mark.png
Here are my papers

guard3.png
All right. Report to the captain. He sholud be around somewhere.

mark.png
Thanks, man.

Going further the path leads to a building with three doors.

teenagnt_137.png
teenagnt_139.png

The cantine is on the left and a prison cell to the right. What we are interested are the doors in the middle.

teenagnt_140.png
teenagnt_141.png

mark.png
Sir, I'm Mark, a rookie.

teenagnt_164.png

captain.png
We're gonna turn you into a real man, right, son!?

mark.png
Erm...

captain.png
Best of the best!...

mark.png
Uh...

captain.png
By sweat, blood and tears!

mark.png
I'd rather...

captain.png
I'm glad to see your enthusiasm, son! Let's not waste time! I was told to give you some express training. All right, son! You'll have to pass three trials! Let's begin with the easy one!...

teenagnt_156.png

captain.png
The task is simple. I'll lock up you here and you must escape. Is it clear?!

mark.png
Sir, I...

captain.png
GOOD!

mark.png
Hello! Great.

Captain hasn't lied, the task is rather simple. We have some time so we might read the graffiti on the wall.

teenagnt_165.png
teenagnt_166.png

teenagnt_167.png
teenagnt_168.png

Now let's see if there's anything we can interact with.

A spring and a bulb unfortunately are not enough to break out of here. So we resort to what every Codexer would find the best way of dealing with problems - whining!

mark.png
OK, that was funny. Now let me out!

mark.png
Hey! Is there anybody out there?! HELP!!!

mark.png
Have mercy. I'm gonna die here!

mark.png
I'm getting hungry!

teenagnt_182.png

mark.png
Thanks.

Although the food doesn't seem to be edible...

mark.png
No thanks. This food seems still alive.

.. we can find some use for it. Looking at the exposed wires gives Mark an idea...

mark.png
That gives me an idea...

teenagnt_183.png

mark.png
Now I got to check if it works.

Indeed it does, after using a switch we can see sparkles on the food.

teenagnt_186.png
teenagnt_185.png

mark.png
I think it's time to call captain.

mark.png
Hey, I finished the meal!

mark.png
Wow, he got welded to the bowl!...

teenagnt_191.png
teenagnt_193.png

teenagnt_194.png

captain.png
I think... you have passed... the first test... Let's get... to the next one...

teenagnt_197.png

captain.png
Ok, soldier. Let's assume I'm your captive and I know some secret password. Your task is to get it from me. CLEAR?!?

mark.png
Am I restricted?

captain.png
No. Do anything you want.

mark.png
May I even spit in your eye?

captain.png
Yes.

mark.png
Thanks, just checking.

OK, last time we were here we only spoke to the captain but now we'll check all the surrounding environment.

Not much at the present time. A quick round around the camp shows what locations we can visit.

A cantine:

teenagnt_214.png

A wall and trees with something hiding between them:

teenagnt_215.png

A mud pond:

teenagnt_216.png

And a tent:

teenagnt_217.png

We'll start with the wall.

teenagnt_222.png
teenagnt_223.png

It may not be visible on the picture but Mark has took a piece of the plant.

teenagnt_221.png
teenagnt_220.png

teenagnt_219.png
teenagnt_218.png

Hmm... a high wall and we should try to get on the other side? Maybe we should look for a rope? No, of course we will jump over it using a spring!

mark.png
How am I spupposed to get back? Great. Oh, yeah, right...

teenagnt_234.png

Ok... :?

mark.png
Piece of cake.

The shovel we took will become useful in a minute but first, it's time for some tortures!

Delicate plant + captain =...

teenagnt_236.png
teenagnt_237.png

teenagnt_238.png
teenagnt_239.png

teenagnt_240.png

mark.png
Now, what is the password?

captain.png
Get lost, you pathetic wimp.

mark.png
Be nice, or I'll tickle you again.

captain.png
Go on, that'll be a pleasure.

mark.png
You enjoy that, don't you?

captain.png
Well, you know...

mark.png
Ok, I'll find some other way.

At least he lost a knife so we can take it.

teenagnt_251.png

I have no dea why but it was called a Rambo knife in Polish version. It is used to... cut things. Like barbed wire.

Brute force is not enough so we need to use the shovel. The mysterious object is, in fact, a kaleidoscope.

teenagnt_124.png

mark.png
What are you reading?

guard3.png
'Soldier News', of course.

mark.png
You love all that military stuff, don't you?

guard3.png
Are you crazy? I like pictures of cool babes, crosswords, the humor page, rumors, recipes...

mark.png
COOKING?!

guard3.png
Yes, they try to rise their profile. Gain some new readers, you know.

mark.png
Oh, yeah. Great idea. Is there a knitting page too?

guard3.png
I get the feeling yoiu're trying to be funny.

mark.png
Nah, me? Never. :smug:

guard3.png
Good.

mark.png
Would you lend me the magazine?

guard3.png
And what am I supposed to kill the time with then?

mark.png
Erm... You could count the leaves.

guard3.png
There're 11034 leaves here.

mark.png
Wow.

mark.png
Would you care for a wonderful kaleidoscope?

guard3.png
I had one once, but captain saw me playing with it and took it from me. I think he uses it himself, you know.

mark.png
If you give me the gazette, I'll give you that kaleidoscope.

guard3.png
I don't want to know how you got it...

mark.png
Good.

guard3.png
...but what if the captain sees me again?

mark.png
Don't worry, he's tied up.

guard3.png
Oh, test number two, I guess?...

mark.png
Yep.

guard3.png
OK, let's have some fun here.

teenagnt_255.png

teenagnt_257.png
teenagnt_259.png

teenagnt_260.png
teenagnt_261.png

No wonder the captain didn't want him to use a caleidoscope on duty.

mark.png
I brought you something...

captain.png
You can't bribe me.

mark.png
Oh, yeah? What about a new... hot of the press... full-color... special edition... of 'Soldier News'?!

teenagnt_262.png

captain.png
OH GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!!! I'LL DO ANYTHING.

mark.png
Password...

captain.png
The password is 'COFFEE'. Tell it to the barman and he'll give you something. Then he'll tell you about the third task. NOW FREE ME!!!

mark.png
I'll think about it.

I said I'd try to fit all three tasks in one update but it already seems to be big enough so I'll save the last trial for next one. We'll try even more things that good kids shouldn't try at home like poisoning animals. But before it happens I'll write a few paragraphs about the people behind this piece of software. Stay tuned!

Now this brings back some glorious memories. Go for it all the way through to the end, mang.

BTW. I'm tempted to hijack your idea of LPing The Prince and the Coward.
