North Africa
Part I
Part II

Time for another LP, this time of a tactical game. Theater of War is a real time tactical game, those of you familiar with the Cross of Iron or Achtung Panzer! LP's here on the Codex will know what to roughly expect in form of game play from this game.

The game is about a small part of the battle of Kurks in 1943

I intend to go through one of the factions campaigns, they are fairly short but should be fun nonetheless, if it goes quickly enough I might even do the others as well. But first before we begin we must democratically vote for which totalitarian state we shall play.

The first option is Germany, playing with a few but well trained and equipped men, fighting mostly on the offensive battles, can be quite challenging.
Kursk19432011-02-1422-21-31-79.jpg

And then of course the Soviet Union, hordes of poorly trained men, fighting mostly defensivly which is an advantage, though you never know when a Panzer VI will show up and rape your entire forces.
Kursk19432011-02-1422-22-36-02.jpg

The Fatherland vs The Motherland which is better and why, discuss!!! :salute:

Update I: Armored Anti Tree Task Force

Kursk19432011-02-1517-19-16-44.jpg

Alright let's get this going, welcome to the first update of this LP in which we are going to play Theatre of War 2: Kursk, It may say Battle for Caen up there, but ignore that since is only there from the installed expansion.

Kursk19432011-02-1422-20-37-96.jpg

First up faction selection, by popular demand we shall play as Das Reich.

Kursk19432011-02-1517-23-09-74.jpg

Alright after the intro cinematic comes our first mission briefing, in this mission we are to break through the Soviet defenses at Cherkaskoe, they are heavily dug in so this will be no easy feat.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-23-27-47.jpg

Before we start the mission we get the chance to configure our forces for this mission, I chose the default setup for this one. There is a limited number of available vehicles of any given type through out the missions, so for example if we lose all our Anti aircraft guns in one missions and we need them later, well though luck! This also means that capturing enemy equipment can be very useful.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-25-27-68.jpg

We are also able to directly configure our tank crews as such, for example we could take that very experienced crew from a Panzer III and asign them to a new Panzer VI to maximize its effectiveness, but were not doing anything of that right now.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-26-34-11.jpg

Yay loading screen!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-27-01-01.jpg

Alright, we are now ready to deploy our forces before the battle begins!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-27-18-06.jpg

Overview map, here you can see our forces, you might not be able to make out what model every vehicle is but you can get a rough understanding of the strenght of our force. The enemy is supposed to have upwards of a battalion guarding this area so this won't be easy.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-28-05-75.jpg

Further the enemy is well dug in, you can see an anti tank ditch here, this is going to make an assault quite challenging
Kursk19432011-02-1517-28-10-00.jpg

To further complicate matters extensive trenches have been dug as well, how well guarded these are by the enemy we do not know, but we do know that Bolshevist scum shall break before us!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-31-17-72.jpg

An overview of the area ahead, we can see the ditch in the middle of the valley and can see that the enemy is dug in, however we can not see their forces from here. For this mission we have air support and artillery support available, excellent this will aid greatly in overcoming the Bolshevists defenses, not that it is needed of course for the superior Aryan forces.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-31-30-48.jpg

It may look like and APC, but it comes equipped with a mortar, mechanized mortar team excellent.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-32-47-20.jpg

The mortars start firing upon the closest enemy position guarding the crossing, we have no idea what hides there but whatever it is softening it up a bit doesn't hurt!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-35-07-01.jpg

The first vehicle to come to the top of the hill is one of our STuGs, the enemy open fire with at least one anti tank gun. We can hit them from were we are and frontal penetration is somewhat unlikely at this range so we have the advantage.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-36-03-92.jpg

Through out the battle we can see the battle statistics, showing losses for both sides as well as any captured materials.Perhaps a bit gamey that we can see enemy losses so easily but it's not a huge flaw, and one doesn't have to look at it if one doesn't want so it's not a problem.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-37-37-37.jpg

Here are our orders for this mission, our first objective is to capture the closest enemy position defending the trench.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-42-24-35.jpg

The brackets around the unit ( an infantry man in this case) means that the unit can be heard however it is not seen. How we can hear them from this range is a bit puzzling, but I suppose that whatever Bolshevists do is rather loud.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-42-31-59.jpg

With fire from our mortars/tanks/assault guns suppressing the enemy we begin the charge!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-44-28-70.jpg

One ATG is spotted at the closest position
Kursk19432011-02-1517-44-40-09.jpg

The Panzer V "Panther" here makes short work of it with a direct hit, take that Bolshevist scum!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-44-47-74.jpg

However fire from another gun can already be heard coming from close to the first one, caution will have to be exercised
Kursk19432011-02-1517-46-17-70.jpg

Another ATG makes it self visible as i fires at us hitting one of the STuGs and immobilizing it, well at least it can still fire upon the closest enemy trench and we know another enemy gun position to fire upon.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-48-36-80.jpg

We call in some artillery support to aid our advance by hitting the enemy gun emplacements.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-52-31-93.jpg

The fuck just happened here? Why is the Panzer V driving around the aimlessly and with it's side armor exposed to the enemy none the less, the enemy manage to immobilize it with a hit, I lack words to express this rage silly tank crew that can't follow orders properly. :x
Kursk19432011-02-1517-52-55-19.jpg

One infantry squad has reached the first enemy position, using the light machine guns to lay down suppressive fire while the rest out flank the trenches.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-53-30-01.jpg

Meanwhile the same Panther that got stuck before has gotten it self blown up, I don't mind the retarded tank crew blowing up, but a Panzer V is valuable damn it!
Kursk19432011-02-1517-55-03-13.jpg

A Panzer III manages to get stuck in the mud, great.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-55-55-58.jpg

I hope you like artillery shells Bolshevist scum.
Kursk19432011-02-1517-58-47-19.jpg

The infantry squad has managed to take the trench with out losses, the enemy has already retreated from it. The Bolshevists have no honor, like a woman!
Kursk19432011-02-1518-01-02-71.jpg

So far the mission is proceeding excellently despite the loss of the tank, and the other getting stuck.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-06-44-70.jpg

And everything manages to continue to go well... oh shit Soviet close air support! Not good.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-07-26-09.jpg

No problem though, the Bolshevists can not into aiming. And our STuG rolls on unscratched.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-08-06-57.jpg

The Soviet planes come back for another go.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-08-10-86.jpg

They really seem to hate that Panzer III this time
Kursk19432011-02-1518-08-21-94.jpg

It is proven once and for all that Soviet pilots can not into aiming
Kursk19432011-02-1518-09-51-99.jpg

Excellent a STuG has crossed the ditch, with armored support we will be able to easily take the next position and out flank the enemy from there
Kursk19432011-02-1518-11-10-35.jpg

Looking to the Horizon, is it a bird? is it a plane? Is it a ... no it is enemy air craft
Kursk19432011-02-1518-11-16-46.jpg

They seem intent to end the existence of our brave Panzer III crew
Kursk19432011-02-1518-11-48-84.jpg

Meanwhile some artillery shells are exploding around the next Soviet line, that isn't my artillery, so does this mean the Bolshevists are shelling them selves? I guess one of the soldiers in the trench said something bad about "comrade" Stalin.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-12-07-19.jpg

Once again going for one of the Panzer III
Kursk19432011-02-1518-12-12-58.jpg

What was that? A bomb? Any way it doesn't bother the tank or it's crew much which just keeps on rolling towards victory. Not even this time can the Bolshevists hit our tanks.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-12-34-63.jpg

And now the Panzer is in an excellent spot, having a clear line of fire on the enemy, while being covered from the other guns thanks to being next to that incline.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-13-27-38.jpg

A Panther has crossed, now we shall show the enemy the true meaning of fear.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-15-49-12.jpg

Take that filthy Bolshevist trees! Yeah tanks may be able to run over trees that are slightly to large for it in this game.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-17-47-27.jpg

The fuck? I need to put some more competent crews in those Panthers.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-18-03-56.jpg

I think it actually managed to damage its own track. :x
Kursk19432011-02-1518-22-03-88.jpg

The good news is though that we have carried out our first objective towards victory! We have also successfully broken through the enemy lines and out flanked them, this should make the remaining considerably easier.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-24-40-36.jpg

Enemy heavy machine gun opens fire on our infantry
Kursk19432011-02-1518-27-24-36.jpg

It's hidden some where in those trees, I knew those trees were conspiring with the Bolshevists, good thing our tanks can run them down!
Kursk19432011-02-1518-31-36-95.jpg

Still going good so far, though perhaps not quite as one sided as to begin with, but now we have done the hardest part.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-34-07-05.jpg

The panther though immobilized can still fire upon the enemy and prove useful, especially further ahead you will see.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-34-43-19.jpg

We bring the rest of the troops across now, though both of the recognizance vehicles have gotten stuck in the mud.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-37-08-89.jpg

We have found the heavy machine gun, it was hidden in a pillbox, a direct hit from the Panther (as can be seen in this image) with a high explosive round should finish off the crew.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-49-44-90.jpg

Verdamnt another tank maanaged to get it's track damaged! I suppose it is only a Panzer III, but every tank is highly valuable. No matter is will be repaired afterwards.

Kursk19432011-02-1518-51-54-51.jpg

Several Soviet ATGs are sighted.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-53-18-18.jpg

And another Bolshveist position is captured by the fearless wehrmacht infantry :salute:
Kursk19432011-02-1518-54-44-99.jpg

Slightly to the south another infantry squad is securing the trenches, the enemy forces there have either been killed by the artillery barrage of withdrawn.
Kursk19432011-02-1518-57-30-18.jpg

Not direct hits, but the Panther shown here manages to take out both the crew of an ATG and heavily damage the truck up ahead forcing the enemy to abandon it ( not with the same shot obviously)
Kursk19432011-02-1518-59-33-67.jpg

The enemy has been pushed back far, victory is with in our grasp soon!
Kursk19432011-02-1519-06-28-81.jpg

I have no idea what happened here, both why this STuG was there or how it was destroyed, most enemy anti tank weapons should have been cleared out that are are capable of hitting it there.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-15-35-29.jpg

Interesting an Soviet mortar, this could prove useful in clearing out the last enemy positions if it is still operable.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-16-24-23.jpg

Whats this the Bolshevists are charging us? Well with our machine guns we shall cut them down where they stand from behind our cover in the trenches!
Kursk19432011-02-1519-17-59-97.jpg

Sadly our troops do not seem to be trained in pop a mole and some how are completely slaughtered, well that was unexpected.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-18-22-04.jpg

Never the less the village has been secured, and reinforcements are available.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-19-45-89.jpg

But then when the battle was thought won, an enemy armored counter attack is sighted. This is not good, we only have one fully functional Tank left, all of or other tanks or tank destroyers have been immobilized or are out of ammunition.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-20-53-16.jpg

However despite our grim situation there is something to improve our chances, the enemies tanks are American made. And our old Panzer III manages to take one out with its first shot.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-21-51-98.jpg

However if the enemy tanks are inferior in quality they are not in number and manage to heavily damage the Panzer III, we are now down to one fully functional tank and one immobilized one, this does not look good.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-21-55-65.jpg

But there in the sky, a beautiful sight to behold, Luftwaffe Stukas. With air support when can yet win this!
Kursk19432011-02-1519-22-12-65.jpg

Several enemy tanks are destroyed by the dive bombers, excellent. However many still remain.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-23-24-45.jpg

Well this does seem to be once again be in our favor.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-24-09-23.jpg

Two enemy tanks left.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-24-42-73.jpg

They are reduced to burning wrecks by our one superior tank. :salute:
Kursk19432011-02-1519-24-58-77.jpg

The crewmen are left to run or be cut down by machine gun fire from the tank and we also captured the gun in the pillbox as can be seen on the edge of the image.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-26-55-50.jpg

Well we have won a victory here today! ....um.... sieg heil?

Kursk19432011-02-1519-27-30-58.jpg

And here we can see the statistics from the battle, for every every german that died here today two Bolshevists perished. Also we lost one tank and one tank destroyer compared to the enemies six lost tanks, excellent.
Kursk19432011-02-1519-27-37-91.jpg

And here is the post victory screen, here we can allocate skill points to every soldier that participated in the fight, the amount of points available for each soldiers depends on their actions in the battle, for example a tank crew that destroyed many enemy tanks gets a lot of experience while another that sat around and didn't do much only gets a little bit. However since I'm not much of a control freak I'll just let the computer auto assign skill points.

Well we have our first victory, next time we continue our offensive at Kursk. Also what do you think of image size and quality? I can have them larger if you think more detail is needed to see whats going on.

Yeah the compression when uploaded combined with the downscaling does reduce image quality significantly, going to try higher resolution, and taking screen shoots closer to the action to make them clearer.

Kursk19432011-02-1517-36-03-92.jpg

Kursk19432011-02-1517-31-01-80.jpg

Re uploaded these from the first updates keeping the resolution unchanged, better? If it is I'll make the next update with images this size.

Edit: also noticed compression reduced quality quite a bit to, going to convert future images with higher image quality

Uhh, way too big imo. I'd prefer the 1024x resolution myself. If some text in the screen is important then just quote it.

Ok trying with slightly larger images, and with less compression should probably be a good trade off between detail and size.

Part II: Battle of Cherkasskoe

Kursk19432011-02-1614-18-10-92.jpg

Welcome back to the next part in the fight against Bolshevism. Today we are assaulting another enemy position, well dug in and equipped with anti tank guns, there is also the possibility of the enemy getting armored reinforcements.

Kursk19432011-02-1614-19-29-80.jpg

The enemy may be well dug in, but we are quite well equipped. We've got field artillery, mortars, tanks, assault guns, anti air guns, APCs etc. in other words all the stuff you wished you had in your garage.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-21-00-48.jpg

Argh the bloom, it burns!
Kursk19432011-02-1614-21-14-27.jpg

Ah there properly grim dark, much better on the eyes
Kursk19432011-02-1614-21-38-16.jpg

This time we've got an Ace up our sleeve, two Panzer VI "Tiger".
Kursk19432011-02-1614-24-12-89.jpg

Previously an enemy trench has been taken and we are going to launch our assault from there.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-24-22-76.jpg

This is our target, we know that there are plenty of anti tank weapons around, but not how they are positioned.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-24-58-49.jpg

We start shelling some visible trenches, we will probably at least kill something!
Kursk19432011-02-1614-26-17-68.jpg

Some allied tactical bombers drop some ordinance in the middle of the town at the very least destroying the hiding place and cover the buildings provide.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-29-47-41.jpg

A first tentative push forward, we already notice enemy infantry in the near by trench as well as gain visual on an enemy artillery piece
Kursk19432011-02-1614-30-24-00.jpg

The mortars can hit it even hidden behind other objects as it is.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-31-02-78.jpg

With enemy nearby artillery presumably neutralized and enemy infantry in the trench suppressed we charge forward!
Kursk19432011-02-1614-31-45-46.jpg

However as we do so additional concealed guns open fire.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-32-38-91.jpg

And mortars!
Kursk19432011-02-1614-33-06-17.jpg

It's a blood bath, that the enemy fires so close to their own men can only mean they have little concern for their lives and both sides take casualties. We are also informed of an enemy mortar battery positioned to the north east, if we are to advance futher into the village we must first neutralize it.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-35-03-00.jpg

A group of mechanized infantry and tanks is prepared for an assault on the mortar position.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-37-13-66.jpg

Not only mortars, but several anti tank guns as well are sighted as they open fire, these must destroyed if we are to be victorious.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-37-41-36.jpg

As the soldiers are advancing, our artillery and tanks open fire on the enemy positions, also we have some rocket artillery support available. Excellent, this will flush the Bolshevists out of their fox mole holes.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-38-15-18.jpg

Wehrmacht casts artillery support, it's supper effective!
Kursk19432011-02-1614-38-46-59.jpg

Pathfinding AI can be very odd at times, why is that tank there, and why is it exposing it's rear to enemy fire?
Kursk19432011-02-1614-39-35-13.jpg

Despite most enemy guns covering the area being taken out they manage to score a direct hit on an APC destroying it, luckily most of the soldiers inside survive, they are however vulnerable at their current position.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-41-03-87.jpg

Going well so far despite the loss of that APC
Kursk19432011-02-1614-41-39-44.jpg

A Panzer IV has successfully flanked the enemy, the enemy ATG's are not positioned to hit it at it's current position we have the advantage.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-44-28-80.jpg

A couple of those pesky enemy mortars are discovered, they will be handled carefully with high explosives.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-45-59-24.jpg

The Bolshevists are sent running for their lives, excellent.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-46-12-20.jpg

More mortars are discovered, or should I say moartars.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-46-36-84.jpg

Now there is also a Panther that has joined on on the fun and the last mortars are quickly destroyed, or their crews have fled.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-48-05-57.jpg

But then a shot from an unknown place managed to heavily damage the Panther, takin gout both main and secondary armaments and wounding the crew.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-49-57-02.jpg

Yeah good luck penetrating the frontal armor with that anti tank rifle
Kursk19432011-02-1614-51-26-84.jpg

:rage:
Though it suppose it was one of those previously concealed guns, I am surprised that they managed to get a direct shot up the hill when dug down.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-52-57-29.jpg

Well now that the mortars are dealt with it's time to take that trench.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-53-47-94.jpg

That gun just refuses to die.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-55-28-04.jpg

Now the crew is dead though, can't remember from what, but in any case it is still incline.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-56-06-49.jpg

Attacking the enemies ass and leg flank and rear with a tiger.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-56-11-61.jpg

Oh great enemy air support.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-56-25-12.jpg

They go full out on the tiger, but barely scratch the paint.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-56-58-41.jpg

Our AA guns are not so well protected though.
Kursk19432011-02-1614-57-13-23.jpg

A Soviet air plane is shot down. :salute:
Kursk19432011-02-1614-59-44-46.jpg

An enemy gun is discovered by the Tiger, it is fairly close but it shouldn't be able to penetrate the Tigers thick frontal armor.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-00-50-25.jpg

Tiger: 1
Anti Tank Guns: 0
Kursk19432011-02-1615-01-14-23.jpg

We are advancing quite well, however we have also taken heavy casualties.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-02-06-80.jpg

With our the enemy mortars giving up trouble the first line of enemy defenses is easily overcome.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-03-51-62.jpg

Anti Tank Rifle vs Tiger frontal armor, it won't even scratch it.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-05-05-91.jpg

One of our Panthers continues on with the time honored tradition of destroying Bolshevist trees. :salute:
Kursk19432011-02-1615-07-33-42.jpg

As we advance through the village an enemy machine gunner is spotted, they are naturally very hazardous to infantry and makes advancing a very bloody affair
Kursk19432011-02-1615-08-23-48.jpg

... or at least it would if it wasn't for a Panzer V turning the house he was hiding in into a pile of rubble with a round of high explosive, good bye Soviet machine gunner.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-13-57-14.jpg

More enemies are spotted, a few infantry men is nothing to bother with, but a dug in tank and an assault gun is discovered, though it shouldn't be a problem as the Tigers frontal armor was said to be impenetrable.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-14-28-04.jpg

The fucking fuck?
:x
Kursk19432011-02-1615-19-27-55.jpg

Despite the loss of that extremely valuable piece of equipment we are doing good progress, over half of the village is now held by german forces.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-22-40-98.jpg

Another enemy ATG is spotted as it opens fire, the Panther is also quite heavily armored and further more the armor is slopped which provides further protection unless the enemy is equipped with rounds fitted with ballistic caps.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-27-18-13.jpg

The center of the village is now occupied.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-27-25-46.jpg

Loses are quite high so far, but now that we have cleared out the worst part it should be the Soviets taking the heavy losses.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-28-13-04.jpg

Our mortars are out of regular grenades, we do however have some smoke grenades available to cover our further advance.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-29-42-38.jpg

That should obscure the view of our advancing forces from enemy gun fire at least partially.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-34-57-20.jpg

The smokes dissipates quickly however and another dug in enemy assault gun is discovered, it's first shot immobilizing the Panther.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-36-22-67.jpg

Just when we need it the most reinforcements become available, 2 Panzer VI, 2 Panzer V, and 3 squads of mechanized infantry this should be what we need to finally break the last of the Bolshevists defenses.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-38-31-22.jpg

Tiger tank hitting ass land leg oh gawd itz heavan
Kursk19432011-02-1615-39-18-66.jpg

Thats dug down assault gun is taken by surprise form behind, assault guns while similar to tanks over all, lack the rotational turret, thus it is completely vulnerable and unable to return fire.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-43-23-53.jpg

Mean while to the South an enemy trench is being cleared out by the newly arrived forces, enabling the soldiers in the village to advance further.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-44-07-94.jpg

Sure it has managed to turn to face the Tiger, but it can't actually shoot it because it's down to deep.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-46-18-65.jpg

It tries to maneuver up to fire at the TIger but when doing so it it heavily damaged by a hit, forcing it's crew to abandon it.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-48-01-47.jpg

With that taken care off we have now surrounded the enemy forces.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-48-44-01.jpg

Well sort of, but in any case be have pretty much neutralized any threat to maneuvering our armored vehicles around.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-49-25-94.jpg

However a couple of ATGs remain, we do not know the exact position but can estimate it from the noise produced when they fire
Kursk19432011-02-1615-50-16-12.jpg

Bolshevist heavy machine gun is reduced to scrap metal.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-51-47-58.jpg

Curses an en enemy counter attack, and if we face them from the direction they are coming from the ATGs left might possibly fire at our rear, a difficult position.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-54-16-12.jpg

So far they haven't been sighted
Kursk19432011-02-1615-54-25-54.jpg

The first tanks appear coming considerably more form the north than expected.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-55-14-97.jpg

Once again we face inferior American made M3s, they may be effective against infantry but against our tanks they are not that much of a threat in a head to head battle.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-56-26-79.jpg

Already they are being destroyed by our tanks.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-57-00-51.jpg

A Panzer V and an immobilized Panzer IV further back are in an excellent position to fire on the enemy, both scoring kills.
Kursk19432011-02-1615-58-20-33.jpg

Excellent only one Bolshevist tank remains, and that one has been heavily damaged and posses no threat.
Kursk19432011-02-1616-05-09-87.jpg

One last assault in the vilage
Kursk19432011-02-1616-06-48-86.jpg

One of our Panthers manage to "sneak" up behind an enemy ATG, eat high explosive Bolshevist scum!
Kursk19432011-02-1616-11-06-71.jpg

The surviging crew man tries to run away though is stopped. Cause of death: Run over by tank.
Kursk19432011-02-1616-12-04-08.jpg

The last few enemy soldiers are dealt with and victory is ours. :salute:
Kursk19432011-02-1616-12-15-05.jpg

The kill death ratio over all is about the same as last mission 2-1, though we lost considerably more vehicles. On the bright side we destroyed a lot of Soviet guns and forced them to abandon many more, even capturing a few.
Kursk19432011-02-1616-15-32-06.jpg

As you can see here we now have several captured Soviet guns available should we need additional artillery pieces, doubtful but you never know.

So how was image quality/size in this update? Personally I thought it was pretty decent, I can compress the images slightly less still but they are already at 90 for that quality number or whatever it is for JPGs and going up to a full 100 doesn't increase quality very much but file size goes up a lot.

Excellent work herr general. That bolshevist scumbag Beria will surely hang 2 or 3 of the finest young commanders in soviet russia for this embarrassing loss.

I'm still trying the figure out what all the unit symbols mean as they are still kind of hard to see, but overall i think you got the size right.

I agree. The symbols are hard to see, but the size you're using now is probably the best compromise.

Also,.

I'll try to post all/most of the symbols in high quality with explanations in the beginning of the next update (which should be later today or tomorrow), they might be easier to make out if you already recognize them well, just a thought.

I've been meaning to update this for a while however the mission I am on keeps kicking my ass, well at least this is one modern game where the standard difficulty actually is challenging.

Any way since I'm not so used to this type of games I thought I would ask some of you tactically competent bros for some advice here.
karta.jpg

Here is an overview of the map.

Enemies are dug in at point 1, 2 and 3. There are also a few anti tank guns at the V shaped terrain, and a few dug in tanks anti tank guns and heavy machine guns a between point 1 and 2 though quite a bit behind

What is available: 6 tanks, 2 tank destroyers, 5 APCs, 2 pieces of field artillery, 2 mortar teams, 6 squads of infantry, 2 mobile anti air guns. There is also artillery support with smoke shells available.

In the beginning of the mission division artillery shells point 1, and air support also takes out some enemy forces. From there I have neutralized the closest enemy strong point (by the V shaped terrain). After that called on the artillery to create a smoke cloud to conceal movement between point 1 and 2.
Following that with an assault on 1 with tanks and mechanized infantry, trying to outflank the enemy and hit them from behind where they are vulnerable, while hitting point 2 with artillery and mortars. This particular tactic has seemed promising but has failed me so far, I think I may have the worst of luck, for example Tiger tank getting frontally penetrated at long distance, what are the odds of that happening?

Any tactical mastermind here that could give me a few pointers so I could continue this? What has been the greatest problem for me has been the dug in T-34s, I am unsure how to handle them, is there any idea to try to hit them with artillery in hopes that it will damage their armaments perhaps?

My first instinct on this mission was to shift my dudes left, attack point 1 under cover of smoke screen and upon arriving use the trees surrounding it as cover from the other points while I wiped it out thoroughly, then engaged the t-34s and anti-tank guns from an elevated position with Panthers, Tigers and StuGs - a fight I was likely to win. What actually happened: the smoke screen didn't work. I was fired upon anyway, causing many vehicles to be detracked. The trees didn't work so well until I managed to get all the way around. I was also fired upon regardless. Also upon seeing that the smoke screen had failed, I turned off the Tiger and StuGs to engage, but instead of actually staying still and shooting as I wanted them to, they kept advancing towards the other positions until they were destroyed. I couldn't make them fire without resorting to "fire on area," but that was generally too inaccurate I found to destroy a tank at that range. So yeah.

In summary: no fucking idea.

One thing I will say is that you're not likely to take out a tank with mortar and artillery fire. It just doesn't work. What you can do however is attack any known anti-tank gun position with the 7.5CM Lefs, regardless of whether or not you can see it. Machine guns and anti-tank guns are easily dispatched in this way, and if you do it immediately to the anti-tank guns placed to the right of the ravine that's directly in front of you at the beginning of mission, the Stukas won't waste valuable bombs on them. They'll go after tanks instead, and they just MAY take a few out before you attack.

Don't know what else to say. I managed to take out the strongpoints one time, but couldn't defend against the counterattack.

Thanks for the input I'm going to give this a few more tries, those dug in tanks really are a bitch. I'm wondering if advancing through the smoke screen would work better, going to give that go. Going for the enemy anti tank guns was a good idea, for the Stukas directed their fire at them as well in my attempts instead of on the tanks. :/

I just had another thought that I'm going to attempt to put into practice. Much like Steel Panthers, this game allows you to choose your vehicles and troops before hand rather than just take a standard load out. I've noticed that the APCs are pretty much dead weight. They're great if you have to advance infantry through mortars or artillery fire or something, but they don't really serve much of a purpose directly attacking tough anti-tank positions. They just get wasted. I think I'll remove them all, have the infantry hoof it, and then use the points saved to have more Tigers. Or possibly replace the StuGs with some higher caliber self-propelled artillery, which combined with the mortars and Lef 75s, would pretty much allow me to plaster everything on the field that isn't a tank before it even becomes a problem.

Of course I thought my first attack plan was pretty smart too, so. We'll see.

I could continue this if people are interested though not the German eastern front campaign as I'm pretty much stuck on it. So I could go for something different/easier. Such as Caen (as UK), or North Afrika. Possible factions there as Italy, Germany and US.

Also there is something very very wrong with this here picture, can you spot it? I fear for the sanity of those poor soldiers who had to face this.

I haven't played this game but shouldn't T-34s have a really hard time frontally penetrating Tigers and Panthers? You should be able to knock them out from long range (800m+?). Maybe try some extreme vehicles like an Elefant or something.

Game looks like fun.

EDIT: Downloaded the demo, game is pretty hard, I got obliterated on my first try of the demo mission.

Afrika KKKorps it is then. Meant to update moar but college studies and work got in the way. :M

Africa19432011-05-2121-37-16-88.jpg

First mission, defend against an American counter attack on some small village in north Africa no one cares about.
Africa19432011-05-2121-37-46-74.jpg

Using the default load out we've got 4 infantry squads, 1 AT rifle squad, 4 tanks (2 Panzer III and 2 Panzer IV) as well as several AA guns. These will prove useful later as they are the heavy 88mm variety which are useful against other things than planes.

Africa19432011-05-2121-39-31-25.jpg

Alright here is the place. Due to terrain attacks are expected to come from the north and/or the south west.
Africa19432011-05-2121-42-25-27.jpg

As said previously, 2 Panzer IV and 2 Panzer III. The Panzer III isn't much use against enemy armor, luckily the Panzer IV's are of later makes with the long barrled L/43 gun highly useful against armor.
Africa19432011-05-2121-43-45-23.jpg

Having deployed out the tanks into positions where their flanks are covered from enemy fire we start the missions, and immediately are at the receiving end of an artillery barrage. Good thing there were no soldiers in that building.
Africa19432011-05-2121-44-24-29.jpg

No enemy ground forces spotted so far, however enemy ground attack craft are spotted in the distance. Luckily we have plenty of AA so they shouldn't have an easy time getting at a choice target such as a tank.
Africa19432011-05-2121-44-38-31.jpg

As they approach the flak cannon start firring upon them.
Africa19432011-05-2121-44-49-03.jpg
]
Bombs are dropped with all haste in the middle of the village, once again no soldiers were in there.
Africa19432011-05-2121-45-01-00.jpg

Well a couple are killed by the bombs that drop from the other two, however vengeance is swift as one of the American planes are shot down.
Africa19432011-05-2121-45-39-86.jpg

However just as the air threat has been dealt with the first enemy ground forces are spotted advancing from the west. At least one tank so far.
Africa19432011-05-2121-46-29-31.jpg

However several of our AA guns have a clear line of fire at this place and the enemy tanks are soot down quickly. These 88mm guns are good for more than AA duty. I believe a AT gun was later based on the design since it was so successful in this role.
Africa19432011-05-2121-46-56-72.jpg

Another tank manages to get closer thanks to the cover of the hill, tough once upon it is finished quickly.
Africa19432011-05-2121-47-03-99.jpg

However the American have launched a simultaneous attack from the north west.
Africa19432011-05-2121-47-23-84.jpg

We take out first casualty from ground-ground fighting as a crew man of an AA gun dies from shrapnel from an enemy shell. :salute:
Africa19432011-05-2121-48-03-31.jpg

Tanks are moved in to deal with this potential threat.
Africa19432011-05-2121-48-36-95.jpg

There are several of them, however one has been heavily damaged and it's crew can be seen abandoning it.
Africa19432011-05-2121-49-58-23.jpg

We do have air support available in the form of stukas, though since our defensive guns handle the enemy pushes to well it's not needed quite yet.
Africa19432011-05-2121-50-46-44.jpg

It is in fact going very well so far. Our losses are 7 soldiers, compared to their 41, 2 planes and 6 tanks.
Africa19432011-05-2121-51-19-23.jpg

However enemy artillery has begun firring again.
Africa19432011-05-2121-53-12-24.jpg

And additional tanks are seen coming from the north, aided by tank destroyers this time.
Africa19432011-05-2121-55-07-79.jpg

One advances quickly through fire and is already by the houses of the village.
Africa19432011-05-2121-55-25-64.jpg

And more manages to slip through, it will be considerably harder to get them here as no longer are they in sight of several guns and there is always the risk of hitting friendly troops as well.
Africa19432011-05-2121-55-37-46.jpg

Well some soldiers with Anti-tank rifles are hidden in this building here, which could prove fatal for the American armor passing.
Africa19432011-05-2121-56-34-19.jpg

One of the enemy tanks is destroyed by an AA gun. Also these shitty African houses often lack windows or they are placed very high so the gunner is forced to crawl out of it in order to get a clear shot at the tank destroyer.
Africa19432011-05-2121-56-47-99.jpg

He fires and might have hit, however it doesn't do any damage to the tank destroyer.
Africa19432011-05-2121-57-13-43.jpg

There is quite a few of them coming.
Africa19432011-05-2121-57-20-64.jpg

Another shot is fired, however it doesn't penetrate either. It does get it's tracks damaged from one of our tanks that is keeping it occupied however.
Africa19432011-05-2121-57-32-39.jpg

A Panzer IV deals with an enemy Sherman
Africa19432011-05-2121-57-44-28.jpg

Just a few seconds later it's crew skilfully deals with another one, the explosion can be seen in the distance.
Africa19432011-05-2121-57-50-56.jpg

Next the AT gunner manges to get a successful shot at the TD, the surviving crew abandoned it.
Africa19432011-05-2121-58-57-32.jpg

Looks like this attack has been dealt with as well, all that remains is to mop up the fleeing infantry.
Africa19432011-05-2122-00-11-02.jpg

Enemy artillery is back in action however.
Africa19432011-05-2122-00-49-82.jpg

And several losses are suffered in quick succession as houses where soldiers are in are shelled.
Africa19432011-05-2122-01-31-73.jpg

An American NCO gets into a close combat fight with one of our soldiers. The problem is dealt with by the same soldier, however he is himself wounded and is forced to take cover against another American soldier.
Africa19432011-05-2122-01-53-05.jpg

Thats should be the last of them.
Africa19432011-05-2122-02-08-49.jpg

The losses are still greatly in our favor, our losses have increased to 18 soldiers. However enemy an casualties have increased greatly as well having lost no less than 11 armored vehicles in the fighting so far. More than twice the total number we've got available.
Africa19432011-05-2122-02-46-49.jpg

Enemy artillery does kill a few more though, and we have no idea where it is coming from.
Africa19432011-05-2122-04-00-03.jpg

Interesting I haven't noticed this camera mode previously. It allows you to view the field through the perspective of the soldiers on the field making it easier to see what is in their line of sight or not.
Africa19432011-05-2122-05-15-88.jpg

The enemy offensive has been halted.
Africa19432011-05-2122-05-53-89.jpg

And we are given new objectives, to capture the small village west of our current position where the Americans have their artillery. In order to do this we are given several new tanks, 5 Panzer IV and a Panzer II. The Panzer II may not be much use against heavy armor but it can still deal with infantry well despite being an old obsolete model.
Africa19432011-05-2122-06-13-08.jpg

There is the new goal.
Africa19432011-05-2122-07-05-15.jpg

However are we about to prepare the attack another wave of american attackers come from the south west.
Africa19432011-05-2122-08-09-78.jpg

Nothing to worry about so far, the open dessert makes it easy to pick them off.
Africa19432011-05-2122-08-16-08.jpg

More of them.
Africa19432011-05-2122-09-40-18.jpg

It soon ends as another wreck on the sand however.
Africa19432011-05-2122-09-56-19.jpg

A Panzer IV is immobilized by an enemy shot however, most unfortunate. However if it remains intact otherwise it will still be available for future missions. And of course it can still shoot from it's current position.
Africa19432011-05-2122-10-39-01.jpg

They keep coming.
Africa19432011-05-2122-12-41-09.jpg

... and keep getting turned into burning wrecks.
Africa19432011-05-2122-15-37-13.jpg

Another Panzer IV is immobilized, however this is an earlier model with the L/24 cannon which is less effective against armor.
Africa19432011-05-2122-15-59-97.jpg

Another shot damages it's main armament, looks like it came from the west, possibly the American artillery might be responsible.
Africa19432011-05-2122-18-17-74.jpg

The attack has been dealt with though it does look like the attack if indeed from the west and the tank is taking a heavy shelling.
Africa19432011-05-2122-20-28-85.jpg

The crew decides to abandon the heavily damaged tank and gets killed in the process.
Africa19432011-05-2122-20-42-19.jpg

Well it's payback time as our own offensive is about to get ready, attacking from the north and south simultaneously. Also they are close enough now to hear that the small village is indeed the location of the artillery.
Africa19432011-05-2122-21-10-77.jpg

Rolling on past some American tank wrecks.
Africa19432011-05-2122-21-38-45.jpg

There is more than one gun over there.
Africa19432011-05-2122-22-07-65.jpg

Trying to get a soldier up on the ridge there to see what we are up against before proceeding.
Africa19432011-05-2122-22-53-11.jpg

Several Tank destroyers as well, looks like they are anticipating an attack form the south, well we will start the attack from the north then, and once they are focused on them bring in the southern forces.
Africa19432011-05-2122-24-44-11.jpg

There is a lot of them, fortunately we've got some air support. Stukas. :salute:
Africa19432011-05-2122-25-21-01.jpg

Trying to maneuver around from the South we lose a tank to enemy fire.
Africa19432011-05-2122-25-37-17.jpg

And another from the North gets it's tracks damaged
Africa19432011-05-2122-26-42-76.jpg

And there goes another one, not good at all.
Africa19432011-05-2122-27-48-00.jpg

Damn not another, this isn't looking good.
Africa19432011-05-2122-29-56-96.jpg

However the previously immobilized Pz IV destroys no less than 2 tank destroyers in 2 shots. At least something good.
Africa19432011-05-2122-30-19-32.jpg

Oh shit double penetration, and not in a good way.
Africa19432011-05-2122-31-03-46.jpg

Despite the overall success so far, we might not be able to finish the attack due to losses in armor.
Africa19432011-05-2122-31-16-78.jpg

Our sole remaining fully functional Pz IV proceeds.

And destroys one of the quite dangerous enemy 105mm guns in a single hit. However several guns and and TD's remain against our single Pz IV and a Pz II though that one can not deal with tanks. And neither can our infantry.

We do however have a second wave of CAS, hopefully these will be more useful than the first that didn't accomplish much of anything.

A stuka can be seen dive bombing an American Tank Destroyer.

Not only does it destroy it but also an artillery piece. Aid from above. :M

Mean while the PZ IV has dealt with the remaining Tank Destroyer, only a single gun and some infantry remains.

As the Pz II moves in for the kill a Stuka gets it first however. That should be the last of the enemy threat as they shouldn't have anything left that can threaten our remaining tanks.

Annoying thing is that the houses are situated in a depression on a hill so the tank wil have to ove around it and up the hill in order to be able to shoot at it.
Africa19432011-05-2122-39-11-00.jpg

However as it gets into a position an American soldier with an RPG fires it straight at the tank, will this be the end of it?
Africa19432011-05-2122-39-27-96.jpg

Fortunately it misses and the tank returns fire with 75mm's worth of high explosive, rest in pieces.

Well that was the last of them that pose any threat, missions accomplished. :salute:

The aftermath. I would call that quite a decisive victory with their losses of infantry being about 4-1 and with armor a ratio of more than 7-1.

That is the demo mission, but you play as the Americans. I found it extremely hard, and got smashed each attempt. Assaulting a town full of 8.8 FlaK across open terrain is not pleasant.

Yeah those 88mm flak cannons are nasty indeed, playing the missions as the US I found the best way to deal with it was to use artillery to take them out, especially since you can hit them over the hill in the middle but the flak require a direct line of fire. Either blind fire with attack ground using high explosive or use some infantry to spot the guns and then fire more precisely.
