Well, Lara Croft pioneer in strutting her stuffs, which is nothing to sneeze about.

Still, another game that has huge yet not publicly recognized influence on rpg is probably FF8. FF7 is still under big influence of western RPG so it's actually not a huge step forward as everyone thought. FF8 give you cutscenes in big number, cinemaesque gameplay, video in anything they can. Its system of fully customizable armor and weapons are a bit too advanced for its age (and a leap from FF7 materia system) so no one dare replicate but any other easier features are gleefully copied. I think you can blame many current obsessions of gamemakers (cutscenes, video, shiny graphics) on FF8's shoulder.

Fallout too, I suppose. The freedom in gameplay is simply too pronounced compared to other's, much better than MM8 (the high level enemies in other areas will have you for lunch nomatter what you do). The sandbox style is fully developed here, I think.

Early on, everyone was trying to remake D&D on the PC, but these days it seems to be vise versa, with 4E being inspired by the likes of World of Warcraft.

Doesn't WoW have elves, orcs, and dwarves with classes and hit points? The waters have been getting muddier though.

Honestly, any number of answers would be appropriate, as the question is so poorly worded and open to any number of interpretations.

No real surprise there though.

How does Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama explain the difference between Japanese-designed role-playing games and their western counterparts? By pointing out the divide between classic RPGs like Tomb Raider, Hitman and Final Fantasy.

I know what you're thinking. "Tomb Raider and Hitman aren't western RPGs!" But Toriyama's argument was that western gamers—or, more specifically, players of Eidos games that let players control a singular protagonist—play from their own perspective. Japanese gamers play from the perspective of their character, comfortable playing as a third-party participant with a bird's eye view of the action.

Sure, it makes a strange slide and Toriyama's generalizing theory may have some huge holes in it, but there you go. Square Enix's perspective on the matter.

Yeah, that's good stuff. Some other people have said it's because of conservatism (by comparing Western Action-games HA) but in reality he is just a douche.

Even that guy from Dragon Quest team said that his inspiration came from Diablo.

Hah. Yeah, I'm just saying. CRPGs in general? No doubt about it, D&D is the source. But modern CRPGs seem to be trapped in this incestuous electronic inspiration echo-chamber, where they're just as likely to have first-person, real-time combat like Doom as classes and orcs like D&D.

Depends what you mean by 'modern RPG' -- as most get away with it by having levels, lots of loot, and a few talents then probably Diablo.

Ultima 8, while not directly influential per se, actually previewed all the faggotry to come. Think of any way and area an RPG could have been dumbed down during the 15 years that followed, and you'll find something along these lines in Pagan, from storyfag fixation to one-and-a-half-stat arcade clickfests.

Diablo.

It took a well-defined RPG concept (the rogue-like), gave it snazzy graphics, dropped the turn-based gameplay and raked in millions.

Everything a successful game needs.

(No-one says it has to be fun.)
