Man I wish CK looked like this, hopefully CK2 will.

This? This is horrible, check out Stranniks map mod or even better the fucking awesome MEIOU map. Better colors, better provinces, better everything. I cant stand to look at vanilla map anymore.

Alright, my game is about 100 years of the LP right now. I'll keep doing regular updates, but I'm going to shelve the game until the LP gets closer to the play date. Probably another update tonight or tomorrow.

i laugh at you and your feeble loan taking and poor strategy, a good Emperor would have used his fleet to keep the Italians and Spaniards off his tits, quickly smashed Hungary, and then focused all his forces on Naples.

I would suggest you go beat the hell out of Mameluk sandniggers, and use the vast riches of Egypt to punish those pesky westerners most painfully, but it is pointless as you've already played through the next 100 years.

atleast i hope it will not be so buggy, right now i cant have any counts or vassals at all, they revolt within a year (even my own 12 year old sons), even if i throw money at them and have good reputation.

but knowing Paradox....

Do you have Deus Vult expansion? Try to make your leader a nice guy, don't get too many "ruthless", or "cruel" traits. Impose Feudal Contract law, it does give a 1%/month loyalty boost for all vassals. Get the most badass chancellor you can get, I usually have +3% loyalty increase from good diplomacy skill. It is also better idea to have bishops as your vassals instead of regular guys. Bishops are more loyal to their master, because they get additional very decent loyalty bonus from piety, and they have no demesne limit, so you can create very large bishoprics that will not release their own vassals. Plus, the more lands your bishop has, the higher chance he has of becoming pope, and when he does, you get your land back, and get friendly support of the Holy See. Throwing money at vassals is ineffective, gifts do not increase loyalty (only new titles), and reducing scutage to 0 gives only 0,5% loyalty boost and results in an enormous loss of income.

well EU Rome is somewhat super fabulous if only for the character, republic and civil war mechanics. I haven't picked up Vicky 2 yet but if it's just improvements over the first it should be pretty damn good. Not sure about Crusader Kings, i just recently did not remove it from an inventory and i haven't wrapped my head around it yet.

Edot: Also, Mamluk land is pretty shit, only Cairo and Alexandria are worth a damn and it will take a good long while to get those, i'd recommend focusing on your internal economy and tech, maybe create a CoT in Constantinople.

Eh EU Rome didn't do it for me. I'm hearing good things about Vicky 2, but I don't know whether to go with that or CK.

Deus Vult = check
no ruthlessness = check
Feudal Contract = will change it
badass Chancellor = check, he got 12
bishops = gonna try this, i made my sons dukes, and they revolted 2 years later along with their mom.

although i need to fix that damn crash bug first though, the game always crashes around 12th mars/july 1089.

Why did they revolt? Because their loyalty was too low? Could you list all the factors influencing their loyalty?

For instance, my selfish, vengeful, proud and excommunicated vassal (both vassal's and liege's traits influence loyalty) is very loyal to my king despite his severely tarnished reputation. The only revolt I had in few decades, was two rival vassal brothers trying to start a civil war against the king (despite their 100% loyalty).

One thing I Know for sure about CK is that successions always will fuck up with the loyalty of a significant part of your lieges.

heres what it looks like, and when i unpaus the game one of my sons declare war, being disloyalty incarnate, so i was forced to type "Byzantine" and autorevoke alot of counts and duchies and control them myself, as you see up in the corner with the hand and dagger.

dunno why but when i became King of Finland (ruling from the Baltics funny enough) after a holy crusade into tribal Finland/Russia they all started jumping my ass once a week.

(yeah i offered alot of guys vassalage in case you wonder why Parma and Toscana and others is among my lands, and some accepted readily enough.)

Alright, since I'm shelving this for the time being, what's the next best Paradox game (other than HoI) to get?

Not sure about best, but probably the most unique of them is Crusader Kings. It's family/dynasty-oriented, rather than nation-oriented.

If you get it, be sure to also get the Deus Vult expansion, the latest beta patch, and the Deus Vult Improvement Pack.

offering that yourself decreases your reputation if they accept; merely accepting if it's offered, does not

I'm balla, so I went ahead and got both Vicky 2 and CK. Figured I'd stretch my graphics whoredom first with V2. As soon as I learn how to play...

Anyway, update in an hour or two.

February 17, 1440: Politics

We were repulsed in our attempt to gain a foothold (or maybe boothold?) on the Italian Peninsula, and while we took more lands from the Muslims, our expansion West has been an unsuccessful endeavor. We now look to consolidate our position and perhaps make an ally of one of the powerful states in the region.

eu3game2010-08-2514-19-19-83.jpg

A look at the Empire.

eu3game2010-08-2514-19-59-24.jpg

The constant warfare has made our people unhappy. We face numerous rebellions all over the Empire.

eu3game2010-08-2514-21-00-03.jpg

We lack good relations with any power, although our early expansion has led to use having a large lead in prestige.

eu3game2010-08-2517-04-04-32.jpg

Wallachia has disregarded our alliances too many times. We fabricate a claim on their throne and declare war.

eu3game2010-08-2517-05-07-75.jpg

Hungary might get involved, but they seem like they have their hands full with the HRE Bohemia. Ultimately, I'm not worried about their possible intervention.

eu3game2010-08-2517-06-10-42.jpg

Their small force besieges Bulgaria.

eu3game2010-08-2517-06-42-21.jpg

One army routs their besiegers, the other besieges their one territory.

eu3game2010-08-2517-08-25-19.jpg

A lucky event which fills our coffers with around 300 ducats.

eu3game2010-08-2517-09-07-10.jpg

Hungary gets beaten up by Bohemia, and then Austria declares war on them. I don't envy Hungary right now.

eu3game2010-08-2517-09-48-04.jpg

Bohemia is getting large. We'll have to find a way to check their expansion soon.

eu3game2010-08-2517-09-58-85.jpg

A foregone conclusion.

eu3game2010-08-2517-10-45-08.jpg

We form a personal union with Wallachia, which means their country will be ruled by our Emperor. Upon our Emperor dying, there is a chance their territory will be annexed. It's a nice way to expand without all of the messy infamy you get from annexation.

eu3game2010-08-2517-11-36-67.jpg

We work on improving our relations with the Wallachian state, now that they're under our leadership.

eu3game2010-08-2517-12-14-86.jpg

Hmm... another nice event. We don't need the +2 stability yet, but this could be an opportunity to flex our muscles in the region.

eu3game2010-08-2517-12-31-84.jpg

We're not looking for annexation against Serbia here, but we can look for a favorable peace settlement. Hungary will once again not be a problem.

eu3game2010-08-2517-13-16-05.jpg

Serbia falls very quickly. I didn't wait 5000 days for the city to fall, but the peasants had been besieging them for over a decade, so the morale of the city was so low they capitulated almost immediately.

eu3game2010-08-2517-13-36-23.jpg

We don't get much out of it, admittedly, but I can't stand an increase in infamy at the moment, so our territorial ambitions will have to wait.

eu3game2010-08-2517-13-45-05.jpg

Austria takes a chunk out of Hungary as well. They've gone from regional power to regional whipping boy in record time.

eu3game2010-08-2517-14-14-94.jpg

We decide to hire a diplomat to hasten the decrease of our infamy.

eu3game2010-08-2517-14-44-72.jpg

We decide to suck up to Austria in the hopes of eventually forming an alliance with them. This will be a major money sink in our budget, but having a strong ally in the region is very important.

eu3game2010-08-2517-17-34-71.jpg

Improving our relations with Wallachia also drains some of our resources.

eu3game2010-08-2517-18-28-50.jpg

Not Pictured: Me playing whack-a-mole (popamole LOL) with numerous small rebellions. Huge pain in the ass.

eu3game2010-08-2517-19-02-98.jpg

Muscovy is expanding a lot in the North. We'll be following them fairly closely, for reasons you'll see eventually.

eu3game2010-08-2517-22-39-30.jpg

A look at our sliders. We need to move a bit more towards innovative to be able to Westernize. After that, we'll focus on free subjects (huge tech research boost) and then toward free market and centralization.

eu3game2010-08-2517-26-44-45.jpg

We decide to try and check Naples' expansion. They've been gobbling up all of the single province minors in the region. Hopefully this will give them pause before attacking the Papal State (they had already warred with them earlier, so it's not impossible).

eu3game2010-08-2517-26-56-78.jpg

We also guarantee Austria. A little boost to our relations won't hurt.

eu3game2010-08-2517-28-18-01.jpg

More sucking up.

eu3game2010-08-2517-28-24-94.jpg

Wallachia expands due to some rebellion in Hungary.

eu3game2010-08-2517-28-33-33.jpg

And more sucking up.

eu3game2010-08-2517-29-15-28.jpg

Bohemia seems to have it's hands full at the moment... maybe the time is right for a strike.

eu3game2010-08-2517-29-34-17.jpg

eu3game2010-08-2517-29-41-98.jpg

eu3game2010-08-2517-29-44-96.jpg

The King is Dead. Long Live the King. And we inherited Wallachia. Peaceful expansion... that will come up in this LP again.

eu3game2010-08-2517-29-50-02.jpg

Uh... really shitty stats.

eu3game2010-08-2517-30-29-66.jpg

His heir, however, has some really good stats. We're going to wait for him to get a bit older and then find a way to put him on the throne ASAP.

eu3game2010-08-2517-31-03-16.jpg

Still eyeing Bohemia. I don't like sharing a border with a hostile HRE.

eu3game2010-08-2517-32-26-49.jpg

Fuck it, we're going.

eu3game2010-08-2517-36-09-65.jpg

We occupy Transylvania. Upon doing so, I realize I need this country. The -5 attackers get is very nice.

eu3game2010-08-2517-36-44-73.jpg

We're winning!

eu3game2010-08-2517-37-28-35.jpg

Uh oh. The last thing we need is Bohemia to bring it's rather large army back toward us.

eu3game2010-08-2517-37-50-26.jpg

Fuck. This might have been a bad idea.

eu3game2010-08-2517-38-15-92.jpg

The tale of the tape. We're outnumbered. This was a foolish move.

eu3game2010-08-2517-39-04-02.jpg

Another loan. I learned a lesson from these two Wars (the first with Naples and this one with Bohemia), don't fight someone stronger than you.

eu3game2010-08-2517-40-21-94.jpg

Our first lost battle. We need to end this war before Bohemia takes a bit of our territories.

eu3game2010-08-2517-42-38-46.jpg

I Love Transylvania.

eu3game2010-08-2517-42-41-31.jpg

As long as we occupy Transylvania with a large enough force, our territory should be safe. The best we can hope for is a stalemate, however, and that doesn't strike me as a good trade.

eu3game2010-08-2517-42-50-20.jpg

I fucking hate those islands.

eu3game2010-08-2517-42-55-28.jpg

Meanwhile we have rebels all over the place.

eu3game2010-08-2517-43-12-66.jpg

We're not making many friends.

eu3game2010-08-2517-43-51-93.jpg

Finally, some good news. Maybe we can get a white peace by taking these provinces.

eu3game2010-08-2517-43-58-17.jpg

eu3game2010-08-2517-45-22-45.jpg

eu3game2010-08-2517-46-02-63.jpg

The war is turning, although we have no real hopes for a decisive win.

eu3game2010-08-2517-47-57-13.jpg

They agree to peace for a concession of defeat. Another wound to our pride, but a wound to the pride is better than a wound to our territory right now.

eu3game2010-08-2517-49-05-64.jpg

Guess what I'm doing for the next 10 years?

eu3game2010-08-2517-50-07-20.jpg

Our legitimacy has bottomed out, so we need to fix that.

eu3game2010-08-2517-50-23-29.jpg

More sucking up.

eu3game2010-08-2517-50-43-89.jpg

The HRE is passing those decisions very quickly. This could be worrisome, as they can turn into a superstate, which would probably spell the end for a free Europe.

eu3game2010-08-2517-53-09-94.jpg

More bribery.

eu3game2010-08-2517-54-47-59.jpg

Our economy is in the shitter right now, especially since we have to keep minting so our bribes to Austria don't slow down. Soon we'll have to take a decade and really get our income on track.

eu3game2010-08-2518-00-38-98.jpg

I got a lot of these messages.

eu3game2010-08-2518-00-53-92.jpg

It grows.

eu3game2010-08-2518-02-36-91.jpg

It took a huge amount of money, but it finally paid off. Now hopefully they don't drop us as allies the second we declare war.

eu3game2010-08-2518-03-16-52.jpg

Doing what we can to insure the relations remain good.

eu3game2010-08-2518-05-55-26.jpg

So many rebels.

eu3game2010-08-2518-07-13-69.jpg

A look at the Empire.

eu3game2010-08-2518-07-48-38.jpg

Our first call to arms. This alliance means a lot, so we have to honor it. Serbia will be a pushover, anyway.

eu3game2010-08-2518-08-11-73.jpg

Muscovy joins in, but they're too far away to be a threat at the moment (although they do have a very large army).

eu3game2010-08-2518-08-28-84.jpg

That was quick.

eu3game2010-08-2518-09-06-65.jpg

Austria just vassalizes them. At least we proved ourselves to be valuable allies.

eu3game2010-08-2518-11-43-55.jpg

It's getting better, although it's still very high.

eu3game2010-08-2518-15-07-83.jpg

The war officially ends.

eu3game2010-08-2518-16-23-07.jpg

I'm still waiting for the opportunity to bring war back to them.

eu3game2010-08-2518-17-57-57.jpg

Before we get the chance, however, we're pulled into another war with Bohemia. Hopefully this one goes better than the last one...

The State of the Empire: February 17, 1453

Our effort at military expansion against Bohemia was fruitless, although we were able to expand with a convenient union with Wallachia. Our gains were more substantial, however, than simply military expansion. We gained a powerful ally in the Habsburgs, which will provide a check against many of the powers of the Holy Roman Empire. While we have been drawn into a war with Bohemia, if it goes well, we will be able to use the alliance with Austria to our advantage.

Also, this is the year in which our Empire was supposed to fall. Rather than being overrun by the Turks, however, our Empire is expanding and has become a relevant power once again. Long Live the Empire!

Inflation jumped to about 12 while I was minting to improve relations with Austria. Fleet is about 28 galleys and 18 transports. Not really worried about building a navy, as certain events transpire that ... well, you'll see in a few updates.

Inflation ends up getting a little out of control later, hitting almost 16, before I finally focus on getting it under control. In the game now it's down to like 5.5.
