You know, I used to be with you on this. I was a crusader against all garbage in gaming and I saw hentai as the worst filth on earth that should be purged with EXTREME prejudice :Shepard: . To see LPs of porn games on mah Codex seemed the sign of utter and yeah I still consider it is.

Now, however, I believe that it is not the Codex that is at fault in this matter - rather, the gaming industry as a whole is to blame. The stems from the simple fact that every other mainstream shit out there is not worth wasting you breath over. We keep getting fed by rubbish we pay (ok, most people here do not remove it from inventory) and be happy with it and say thank you like the rest of drooling "fans" (why I always think of a electric device when I use this word, I have no idea.).

And then comes Sengoku Rance. A simple low budget game catering for niche market - that somehow has higher production values (in terms of sheer polish and replaybility) than 90% AAA titles.

And yes it is often stupid, yes it is extremely corny, and yes I would rather it treated itself more seriously and if not removed altogether, then at least minimise the idiotic H-content. But even in face of it all the game is not just good for what it is (hate that meme). It is the best. Sengoku Rance strives to be original, well thought out and above all addictive as hell.

I think it's pretty obvious that my comment was sarcastic. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

And yes it is often stupid, yes it is extremely corny, and yes I would rather it treated itself more seriously and if not removed altogether, then at least minimise the idiotic H-content. But even in face of it all the game is not just good for what it is (hate that meme). It is the best. Sengoku Rance strives to be original, well thought out and above all addictive as hell.

2) Do you think that most people who follow the Let's Play, do so because of the quality of the game or because it has hentai content?

Regarding you first question I think there is a valid reason why even such mainstays of our little boneyard community as Ghostdog and WhiskeyWolf enjoy this little game greately. Firstly, the game stays true to itself. From turn one you know what to expect from it - a fun comedy with a little porn here and there. That is fair enough and some people may like it solely for that. But, as I gather, that is not enough for either you nor me.

Secondly, and more importantly it actually proves to be more complex than it initially seems, not only in terms of sheer gameplay but also as far as the plot and (the greatest surprise of all) character development is concerned. Figures such as Houjou Soun, Takeda leaders, Kenshin, Inukai, Gekkou, Isoroku are testament of that. The Lp, despite WW's best efforts, doesn't always do the justice here, unfortunately. You need to play the game to experience it.

In many mainstream titles we see a reverse tendency. Let's take the blasted abomination of StarCraft2 campaign as an example (just because I'm so pissed off at it and because SC2 like Rance actually has a good gameplay). The setting promises interstellar struggle of enormous proportions, three different races with completely different mindsets locked in a hopeless struggle for survival. Serious, awesome stuff out there. And after promising that much we get a cookie-cutter story about space cowboys doing shit and dawning booze and somehow against odds winning against an idiot of a villain where in, say, Sengoku Rance with the amount of incompetence they show they would have been steamrolled into pancakes. 7 times. Before actually reallising wtf was going on.

When a porn game that is supposed to be all tongue-in-cheek is actually more serious than EPIC, GRIMDARK AAA title you know you are nearing rock-bottom.

I also have to mention C&C. While SC2 offers 4 fake choices (no real consequence, beside access to some tech and slightly different last mission). Rance has 4 official + 2 unofficial routes that can totally change the gameplay, story and ending. WW has picked the most official path (True route) but they are there. Add to that myriads of small choices and events the consequences of which can get back at you 30 turns later and kick you in the balls or make you scream like a virgin. That is what I call awesome game-design.

Now the second question - I can only speak for myself and I would be a great hypocrite and douchebag if I didn't admit that boobies and sekz scenes hadn't factored in following this LP and later playing Sengoku Rance. Yes, I concede, despite my hate to hentai and otaku "subculture" "rubbish" there is a part of me (very immature, I am aware) that actually enjoys that. A guilty pleasure - what can I say?

However, the fact that I'm not ashamed to admit that serves to prove - there is much more in this game than meets the eye once you scrapped over the nonsense on the surface. It is a mighty good game shining with polish and superb design.

I guess I should've answered that before I made that big huge post. Unlike so called visual interactive novels japs churns out in tons, Sengoku Rance is really a very good, captivating, fun and sometimes mercilessly difficult video game. While, as far as I know, in vis-novels gameplay is only a pretext for porn, the gamplay in Rance proves extremely addictive. Definitely

As a computer game, Rance is one of the most original and addictive games I've ever played. I asked about 20 pages ago whether this game was actually good or if people were just playing it for the lulz. I downloaded it, I started playing, and within a month I had played through all six paths. The gameplay is *good*. The rest of the shit is lulzy the first time through, but that's not enough to keep people playing multiple playthroughs.

This may come as a shock, since you have an AP avatar, but good gameplay is actually the reason why a lot of people play games. I know it's odd, but it's true. This game is probably oneof the ten best games I've ever played, H and corniness aside.

Yeah, perhaps it would. I haven't played these modules for one simple reason - the gameplay in NWN SUCKS ASS (and DragonAge too, for that matter). If Rance sucked in gameplay department as much I wouldn't bother with it. But following a LP of these mods could be entertaining. :D
