If you want to play, the game is accessable here: http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/codex_text_adventure.php

Chapter One is actually about 1/10th of a design document I had and barely scratches the surface. There were going to be multiple ways to escape (avoid the guards / get captured and dipped and play that way / disguise), then multiple ways to complete (find DU, join VD and do the purge, join Cleve or blow everything up) but I'd spread too much of it out and had to build a critical mass to get something working. So carved it all back, made it fairly linear and thought "They'll finish it easily in 5 mins but meh". BOY WAS I WRONG THERE.

Originally once you finished chapter 1, you'd access Site Feedback, then you'd have to go to the News forum and play Chapter 2 to access that and so on.

Yes, it was deliberate that there was no save feature. It was my intention that to complete the game you would have to get from start to finish in one clean play-through. The idea being people would post help on the forums as they opened each Chapter. There was also going to be a "SAY" command that would send a message to everyone who was in the same room as you were. I was going to offer some kind of reward for the first person who finished.

Sadly, I ran out of time to complete it so added in BABY ARM who did a James Bond villian-esque plot dump. Everything from Retardo to the end was built on 31 March (a day before it went live), the Prison Complex and rough outline were built and developed about two weeks ago.

Oh yeah, just in case it wasn't obvious...
  • The RPG Codex is a [DANGEROUS DUNGEON¹] meant for [HIGH LEVEL PLAYERS ONLY²]. Commonly encountered creatures over there include [NEO-NAZI TROLLS], dungeon junkie furries, [TRANSSEXUAL SUCCUBI], and [MULTI-HEADED ABOMINATIONS]. [CLEVELAND MARK BLAKEMORE], of the [GRIMOIRE] RPG fame, is the final boss and is capable of casting the instant death spell ITZ. If you manage to defeat him then Chris Avellone will fly down from the heavens on a chariot made of gold and give you a pint of his urine, which will grant you a powerful blessing.
Like I said, I didn't get a chance to implement the full scope of the vision.

EDIT: ¹Instant death puzzles AMIRITE?
²High-level players only roll in Iron Man mode.

SPOILERS

7345.png

This is a map of the prison complex you start in. You'll start in a different cell based on your user id. The numbers on the map match your user id (hover over the profile button below one of your posts and you'll see your id in the url). If your id is greater than 12,000 you start in a random cell in Block #12.

NOTE: You always head East to get out of your cell. Once done, you can't get back. There's nothing of interest in any of the cells, other than your own.

denizsi's maps are accurate if you want the rest of the game (though he missed Andhaira). When it comes to the randomly connected rooms, you have to find the TRAPDOOR and USE it to get out safely.

The books in the Library do nothing.

I feel...

I feel...

I feel stronger.

DIED
  • Failed to detect traps before exiting cell (352): leave your cell before looking at the passageway.
  • Set-off traps while trying to exit cell (152): get the stone brick without disconnecting the wire.
  • Busted! (176): get caught by the trolls in the barracks without having shaved your head, drawn a swastika on yourself, and donned the leather coat, or try to open the cupboard in the barracks.
  • Died in a shaving accident (95): use the razor on its own rather than with the mirror.
  • Got bitch-slapped hard by a Troll (70): use the pillow-sling on the trolls when they show up outside your cell. (Thanks, Pussycat669.)
  • Thrower of Pillows (45): use the pillow on the lever.
  • Died trying to leave (37): try to leave the area of Retardoland that tells you you cannot leave it by going N, S, E, or W, rather than through the trap door. (Thanks, MaskedMan.)
  • Failure reading disk in drive A (32): I got something like this north of the path to GD where my only options were Abort, Retry, and Fail, but it didn't actually kill me; I got the same screen again by attempting to retry, was knocked back to the forums and found I could view topics while logged in again by attempting to abort, and choosing to fail just put me on the path to GD. (I wonder what the message there is.)
  • Died at birth (29): go the wrong direction in the warm, moist, comfortable part of Retardoland.
  • MULTI-HEADED ABOMINATION HITTING ASS AND THIGH (27): go to the end of the cave in Retardoland.
  • Died in pain performing complex surgery (24): use the razor on the mirror the second time without having used the pills.

OPTIONAL
  • Reset the game... (252): self-explanatory.
  • Guilty of Attempted Rape (141): type "fuck x" or "rape x".
  • Tidied up downstairs (115): use the razor on the mirror before using the magazine.
  • Helpless (61): type "get help". (Thanks, Xor.)
  • Scrawled on the mirror (57): use the black texta (sic) on the mirror before using the magazine.
  • Couldn't resist an opportunity to feel up Chris Avellone (45): use the statue of Chris Avellone.
  • Equipped the ring (21): if you wander the part of Retardoland that has areas named things like "Retreat" and "Go away", look at every scene and you'll eventually find a ring. Get and use the ring for this achievement.
  • Killed Andhaira (19): if you [wander] the part [of] Retardoland where random [words] [are] bracketed and you get asked [inane] questions (I got this by going east of the screen north of the guardhouse), you'll find one screen where "someone" is one of the bracket words. Use the razor on someone to get this.
  • Raped Andhaira's corpse (10): When you kill Andhaira, the word "dead" (or something like that) will appear in brackets in the area description. Use it for this.
  • Will die a virgin (1): type "get laid". (Thanks, cykus.)
  • Lost: type "get lost". (Thanks, taplonaplo.)

Also,

Time: 925 minutes

 I must have left it up overnight, was downloading some stuff I lost recently when my old computer died.

Fuck yeah! Made it in the Codex Elite™!

Cheers fellow Elite Comrades. :salute:

We don't need no stinking next gen pop-a-mole save function!

You get the bitch-slap achievement for using the pillow sling on the trolls in the pathway right at the start. If the virgin thing isn't just a joke then it probably involves doing something with your mom's vagina. Was rather disappointed that you couldn't use the paper bag on Andhaira to get him banned but that's linearity for you. Otherwise much  for an April's fool that was actually entertaining.

I'm more curious about the guy who did it with 34 attempts in 20 minutes. What'd he do, zerg rush the trap in hopes that the growing pile of bodies would protect his next character?

Added the helpless and bitch-slap entries. Thanks, guys.

I left mine overnight too. I think it must be something else.

Or maybe it's just the time spent on your final playthrough.

So in other words...it's a game best played with a walkthrough?

In this instance DU's one of those developers that we need to call bullshit on. We have a reputation to uphold, after all.

No I think this must be the room in retardoland that kills you if you try to leave it. :rage: That's where I gave up.

I forgot to denote an Awesome! for Andhaira at q6, otherwise I didn't miss him. I pretty much killed him and tried to kill him in various ways (pillow for suffocation, sheet for strangling, hammering him, books to mindfuck or throw at him maybe). Sadly, you didn't see give us other choices there.

It kinda went downhill after Retardo, and I was pretty disappointed when I finished mapping the initial area and realized there was nothing special to be found.

Still, good show old chap.

That was fucking retarded. Practical jokes aren't supposed to be BioWare retarded. The parser was ass and the lag unbearable, I gave up dicking around in a maze-like dungeon when it took 5 seconds to draw text.

Yeah well, what are you gonna do about that.

There's also one final achievement missing from the list that nobody got.

Nice work, DU. I didn't have as much time to play with it as I wanted and never got out of the complex, so I'm glad you decided to keep the whole thing up. What I got through was pretty fun.

Completed Chapter One: Escape from Retardo (31).
So 31 of you experienced my death and not a one mourned my passing? No tears, not a single virtual 40 ounce tipped in my honor? Assholes. That's the last time I give my life to play deus ex machina for any of you ingrates.

If this was Adam Cadre then that would be exactly the way to do it.
