... a Monster-Hunting Machine that is. Kotaku previews The Witcher 2.

The gist of the plot is this: There are some folks assassinating kings. Geralt has to stop them. There's a bit more to it than that, of course. Geralt is missing a chunk of his memory that could potentially resurface as the game progresses, and there are doubtlessly more women to sleep with (there's a sex scene within the first ten minutes of the game).

But when you get right down to it, the excellent voice acting, witty writing, and all of the bells and whistles packed into CD Projekt's custom-built game engine are simply filler, things to admire when you aren't busy diving headfirst into the game's deep, satisfying combat system.

The Witcher was one of the best PC role-playing games of all time. The Witcher 2 might wind up being one of the best PC games of all time. Find out on May 17.

So it has come to the point where people rather show what hawt chicks and kewl sex scenes are in a game, rather then... to report about some actual interesting feautures?

I'm guessing this is the date you started pleying veedio gaems as well, amirite?

Such things have been a staple of computer gaming 'journalism' since ancient times or rather since the 386 became widespread and devs could make games with shinier graphics. Check out the hype about Wing Commander and it's 'awesum' explosions!

That's hardly a preview. The dude has just seen a combat video and wrote that he's excited about combat.

So, potatoes have become an acceptable bribe at last? This "preview" must have cost CDP quite a few sacks.

First time I see the combat system getting praised, so far it reeks of a poorly copied Batman:AA.

Hopefully the overall positive impressions are earnest and not just the result of a larger marketing budget.

No no, there was a time when shit games were called out even before they were released. I recall the Daikatana fiasco. And besides, if anything Wing Commander should have been hyped more so. What exactly is revolutionary about TW2?

And TW1 being one of the best RPGs of all time?! Good grief... Like I've said many times before, it wasn't that bad, but it certainly wasn't that good either. I wish journalists didn't have to sound like a bunch of school kids describing their favorite action hero. "HE IS THE BEST OF ALL TIME IN THE UNIVERSE"

And he posted this "preview" after seeing the combat video. He even posted this video on the page. Like I've said, it's hardly a preview, because it has nothing except general description.

Most of my favorite games didn't have any huge tits as pre-release ad campaigns. And yes, these games were released a tad before 2011.

Admittedly, Bloodlines went pretty big on the 'breasts sell' advertising. On the other hand, it's using a sexually charged setting, so there might be a basis for calling it an exception.

You got the timeline correct, he first saw the vid and then posted his preview. It's also worth to note that he played the actual game for several hours before posting the preview.

... and a video !!! But yes, again you are right, its a shity preview but do you expect higher standards from them?

You have an uncommon talent of exposing the obvious things unless they are in the first sentence of a shitty preview.

It's so obvious that it is a shitty preview ("hardly a preview" = "so shitty that it's not even worth calling a preview"), that you didn't agree with me stating that it is a shitty preview ("reading is teh hard"), only to ultimately agree that it is a shitty preview.

WC3 did it with the kissing scene.

Don't remember if it was the third, but they had a porn actress in one of the female roles. Mark Hamill and a porn actress, can it get better?

nope, I never argued the quality of the preview, I only called on ur "he just seen a combat video and wrote a preview" when he actually writes in the first sentence of his preview that he bases it on several hours of playing the game.

Exacly, where's Geralt's neutrality that he wanted to preserve in the books?
I really dont know why he would care about kings dying, Geralt always minded his own business
