I have only been playing on "normal" and the game is damn hard.

I have over 20 hours playing, and I have only gotten to the boss 1 time. And I have only unlocked 1 other ship, and I haven't tried using it yet.

I thought I was going to make it this morning, had a great team together... a pair of expert hand to hand combat rockmen and a crack team to manage the rest of my ship... and then I blew it and the rockmen destroyed a weapons system on an enemy ship and destroyed the ship and themselves at the same time... and then everything went downhill fast.

Perhaps I need to sit down and think about my strategy more. Maybe I am not great at the game yet or something, but beating it and unlocking all the ships on normal seems really hard to me.

You're doing fine, I'm sure that reaching the boss once in 20 hours on normal is the intended level of difficulty. The devs did a poll on their forum, most people hadn't even ever reached the boss yet, let alone beaten him.

Ah, okay. I saw so many posts where people were doing way, way, way better than me... even saw one where someone said "I defeated the boss on my first game, now what?" but I guess these people are all playing on the easy mode.

I didn't want to spoil the game by playing on easy, but I will admit sometimes it can be a real pain in the ass to get snuffed out so easily.

Some of the deaths/endings were pretty hilarious. Ending up with only 1 crew member having to run him to the oxygen room and not quite getting the repairs done. Accidentally blowing up an en enemy ship while all my crew were on it, running out of fuel and being forced to wait with my distress signal on as the rebel fleet over takes me, using a weapon on my own ship to destroy some invaders and forgetting to change the target after they were killed, porting my crew to an enemy ship only to realize it was a drone with no oxygen, etc, etc....

Well, well worth the $10 I paid for it.

While I reached the boss two times now and had a number of good to great runs I've also had runs even now where I die in the first sector. Am currently playing with a kestrel in which I lost all my crew apart from one. Expected to die in every encounter but pulled through 2 sectors where I finally found me two new crewmembers in a store. Game really has its ups and downs. I love it.

Worst mistake I made is opening the airlocks to get rid of fires and then being boarded. My entire crew died from a combination of enemy fire and lack of o2. Went great right up to that moment. Beaming a crack team of combat specialists into an automated scout for the first time and discovering they have no air was also a memorable experience.

I wish this game had some longer term consequences to the encounter resolutions. With such a small starting crew it doesn't feel like there is ever any reason to return someone to their planet instead of conscripting them. etc

Made it to the boss and beat his "First stage" on normal. Second stage destroyed me. Unfortunately as soon as I quit the game FTL patched itself, and I went to the forum and looked at the notes and it said that cloaking allows you to evade stage 2's special attack. AND I HAD A FULLY UPGRADED CLOAKING DEVICE.

GOD DAMN IT.

How linear is it game? I guess that boss stays the same, but other than that does things change much? Is each play through truly unique? Or are the major hubs the same each time with some different events?

All those differently coloured dots on the map get shuffled around each playthrough.

Green sectors can be civilian, Zoltan or Engi sectors (controlled by them or even their homeworld).
Red sectors can Rebel, pirate, Mantis or Rockmen sectors (Mantis or Rockmen controlled or homeworld).
Purple sectors can be normal Nebulae or Slugmen sectors(I guess they can also be either controlled or even homeworld).
I guess homeworlds only appear from the 3rd or 4th sector onwards as you can unlock ships in there and need quite a few bits and bobs and crewmen of certain races to get them.

That's what I gathered from watching a few of this guy's recorded streams.

I got to the boss a second time on the normal difficulty.

I crushed the boss on stage one, and thought I had won, not knowing there was a stage 2. I wasn't sure if I should go back to the rebel base or get repairs, not knowing if the boss would just go straight for his victory conditions or if he would limp around a bit first... so I just attacked the stage two boss straight away. Mistake. I was only at 1/2 health and I almost won... but almost doesn't count. The boss had 4 bars of life left and I was dead. Live and learn.

I also wouldn't mind having some sort of free-roaming mode where you just do your space exploring stuff without the Rebel threat. Sort of like Star Trek or Farscape but without the licensing issues. Perhaps this kind of thing can be added on later? Who knows?

I would love an "infinite" mode...definitely seems like the kinda thing they might add post-release. Apparently the original game was at one point infinite after the boss:

It was originally planned and was a very difficult decision to cut only just a few weeks ago.

Balancing the game to work "infinitely" was just not functioning well and, given the rarity of the Boss defeats, we decided that it would be more worthwhile to continue focusing on other aspects of the game. We think the current concise experience works really well and is sufficient for the final release.

That said, it's still definitely high the list of things we (and others) want, so if we were to do post-release updates it would likely get added.

Sorry about that. Just know that we were disappointed too, with only two of us working and deadlines looming it can be rough to do everything.

Also:

There's a large number of potential game modes for FTL's style of gameplay. For now we're just going to focus on our initial plan. If time permits, we'd love to explore other modes in the future (with a Weird Worlds style mode being high on the list).

Either way, game is fucking awesome. Glad to have supported it on KS.

Unlocked the rock ship on the weekend, the plating is pretty boss, but the weapon loadout isn't.

I find myself restarting/quitting a fair bit instead of being blown up in the later stages, usually run out of missiles and unable to do any damage on late game ships, while they've usually got unlimited ammo but missing a lot against my shield/evasion, too many long and boring standoffs, easier to quit and try again, though I miss out on stats/final scores.

Today is glorious beta key day!

(Game launches on sept 14, but all $10 and up backers from kickstarter should beta access from nowish)
Oh wow, thanks for the heads up! May have to play even if GLORIOUS STEAM ACHIEVEMENTS aren't in since it's beta.

Not really an edit: Although I see the achievements are listed, not sure if they activate and such yet since the game isn't "Live".

Sorry, MHC.

Hey guys. Sorry, we're unable at this time to provide Steam Cloud support. Similarly, official Steam Achievements will also not be included. There are technical issues that we came across when trying to incorporate the Steam API so its functionality cannot be included (other than the overlay). We're pretty disappointed as well and it's something I hope to look into if we ever manage to find free time post release.

Sorry about that!

Anyone got a Spare Key? would make a nice welcome present for a new member :)
I can offer a DOTA 2 key in return
or a Review of any game of your choice (depending on availability)

That's weird, as steam already lists achivements, just that they're locked, maybe next time i load it up the steam page will have them removed again?

You might want to provide a link to some reviews you have done.

I was reading all you guys reaching the boss, and I thought I really sucked because I haven't been able to make it past the 5th sector yet. I do have the Zoltan ship unlocked. Game is really addictive, and I don't usually care for Roguelikes either. I think main reason I like this one is the interface.

As for game modes, I'd really like an easier pace or maybe even no rebel fleet. I don't mind there being an end game, but I'd like to take more time seeing what the galaxy has to offer. Maybe really limit fuel to make exploration more risky.

Best protip I've got off the top of my head is explore as much as possible during the first few sectors. Encounters are weakest so you can pick up as much scrap/crew/crap as you can before things start getting hairy. Still haven't unlocked any ships/variants apart from the engi ship myself. I have played one game on easy difficulty now just to try it out and HOLY SHIT GUYS YOU GET SO MUCH MORE SCRAP IT'S INSANE. Still ended up dying due to some unfortunately good missile hits and uncontrolled fires.

I have managed to defeat the big boss 1 time now on normal.

I have a number of ships unlocked, but have only ever managed to get to the boss with the Kestrel (starting ship).

Things can go bad so quickly. It is quite easy to die in sector 1, and just getting to sector 5 can be rare, let alone getting to the boss. I have only gotten to the boss 3 times.

I have been trying some of the other ships now, but they all play so differently. It is very important to figure out the ships weakness and get that taken care of ASAP.

You really need to have 2 weapons by sector 3. The starting ship comes with 2 weapons so it is pretty easy to get to the later stages of the game, but a lot of the other ships only have 1 weapon, and those ships will do fine on sector 1 and 2, but once you hit sector 3 or 4 you better have expanded to a second weapon or things will just suddenly go very, very badly.

Missile defense is very important as well as having some sort of fast missile based weapon that can penetrate shields and damage their shields and/or weapons.

Without some sort of missile weapon you can easily get into a guaranteed loss once you hit enemy ships with 3 shields.

Most of my losses come due to the fact that I don't have a fast enough missile weapon or I run out of missiles.
