Obviously so. Which means we need to take some christians along if we want a master blacksmith.

I know, I know. Horrible creatures, I avoid them whenever I can. But I feel that the master blacksmith is what we need to make the best from our previous choice of cargo.

By the way, assume essential livestock was already bought, in small quantities, in Iceland. The option of purchasing the male and female champion horses simply means not buying any further livestock due to their high costs. I guess it wasn't clear that in the previous update the choice was not "buy only x", but "purchase mostly x". There is not much purpose to buying more of the same, which is why in the latest update the options are more specialized.

As for Christians...

Remember, the muslims once were a tiny minority in France. [/GD]

I like the horse-breeding idea. Horse racing, a gambling industry, dressage - the possibilities are enticing.

Let's become specialists at something instead of generalists. This will give us an edge in a field we can exploit for trade in future. As we've already chosen the metal ores in the previous update let's make the best use of it with the blacksmith. This means option B in the 'Christian' choice, so we'll have to just allow only Christians with valuable skills and 'discourage' proselytising. Perhaps if they witness our "Thor's holy water" in action they may even convert to the real Gods.

If our speciality is metals and forging then it makes sense to choose the meteoric ore. Yes there won't be much in terms of quantity, but a couple of swords forged from it by our master blacksmith would be the best weapons on the continent. In future generations we could even melt them down again and reuse the metal for crucial components such as firing mechanisms in muskets or early cannons. So until high-quality steel is available this could give us a small but useful advantage in our area of expertise.

Bros, let's settle this right now: are we going to Byzantium later for the Varangians, or no? This is a very important moment
E) To the fabled and mighty Miklagard, also known as Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, because it's a good time to make use of his language and trading skills. Miklagard will definitively have all the products and supplies Angartyr might wish to purchase plus have them at possibly cheaper prices than the other merchant cities considered, and although it won't have many of the kind of people he is interested in attracting to a settlement of his own making, it also is the home of the famous Varangian Guard, among whom many probably still follow the old gods, and are the among the most formidable and mighty Viking warriors of the world. Convincing the Varangians to join this planned colonization of the New World will be both difficult, expensive and likely to not succeed due to their reputed deep loyalty and sense of duty to the Byzantine Emperor, but if successful could serve as the foundation for a formidable military in the future.
If we don't plan on getting them on our side, then we absolutely need either the tactician or sergeant, to the exclusion of everything else.
Why am I pushing for Byzanthium so hard? Because I want to get there before the BROrangians get even more Christianized(yes, they can be an extremely important asset) and to build relations with Constantinople before TSHTF over there with Crusades->attacks->invasions->fall. True, we have time, but it is best to hammer the iron while it's hot.

Edit: 'Sides, how soon until we pull another Ean and disappear for five-hundred-three thousand years? Angartyr already did it once.

I need a counterbalance for the fact the protagonist is mostly a normal human without any cool powers being unable to die, and I don't really intend to allow the acquring of cheesy high fantasy powers. I want for this to be more down-to-earth, Low-fantasy like a TNO without any supernatural ability other than being immortal and a very limited sixth sense over supernatural forces. This counterbalance is the fact he nevers stay dead for too long. When he got killed by the Deep ones, he only stayed dead for a few months.

tl;dr Think of the protagonist as that character from Brother None's Let's Read: The Damned minus being cursed by demons instead of as a demigod: A mostly normal guy except for the fact he can't die.

1A - It 'belongs to the damned', but we are already damned. It may provide a clue at a later date.

2G - I'm sure we'll eventually have to go to the crypt to resolve this, but perhaps this tower will give us some ideas as to the origin of the problem. The door was bolted and boarded from the outside - was there something to be feared within? Did a priest embark on some dangerous research and unleash a demon of some sort? Was the boarding-up of the door a futile attempt at containing the evil?

We already are dammed and this could prove useful later on.

2I

Although 2F also sounds promising - there might be clues in there. Just stay away from the crypts and the tower barred from the outside until we learn more. The last thing we want is to unleash whatever might be trapped inside...

So the cloak was facing away from the statues. Was it perhaps facing one of the towers?

near the altar stood a completely cloaked man facing the right of the chamber rather than the statues, oblivious to the visitor and apparently in deep contemplation. Angartyr approached the temple carefully, trying to not draw attention. For all he knew, beneath that cloak could be a monstrous creature rather than a man.

Okay, so the cloaked man was facing right of the chamber. What areas does this correspond to, Cassidy? Was it facing any particular tower? I fee that this is something that our character would reasonably know.

I think that we need supernatural weapons of our own if we are to make it out of here alive. As for the corrupted cross and cloak, I'm not so sure. We've already got that necklace, we are hauling enough crazy shit with us as it is. Having some sort of relic or weapon of faith might allow us to take on whatever supernatural forces exist here. Since I have the sneaking suspicion that the Priests have been corrupted by the dark forces that dwell here, I'd rather avoid them and go straight to the sacred area for those who believe in Odin. We may find something there, or perhaps going to a holy place strengthened by our own belief might allow us to banish whatever spirit inhabits the cross.

Paranoid speculation: I think that the Christian priest we met earlier, who warned us not to come, might be involved in this.

The cloak wasn't facing the specific direction of any of the stairways leading to one of the towers.

The crypts and the barred tower (superficially at least) seem the most likely candidates to contain the evil presence, but I don't think we'd be unleashing anything by opening the boarded-up tower as it's not as though the evil has been contained anyway (given the missing people, the accursed items by the altar, etc). Still, it might be worth checking F or I for clues first. I is a total gamble, 9 might be a holy number for those who worship Odin, but this all depends on which tower one counts from doesn't it? Quite arbitrary. And what we're looking for could have nothing to do with Odin. The high priest's tower seems the most logical option.

1A 2F for me.

Merry Midvinterblót!

In celebration I started using the non supernatural part of this thread as basis for a Magna Mundi Platinum 2 modmod(or to be very clear: modmodmod as it is based in copx' Mare Apertum)

Of course this is extremely WIP, and will be subject to countless changes yet. All names and extent of colonization are just placeholders, because naturally they will be up for voting in the IF version of the same here.

Expect it to get done once this IF is concluded, if lucky.

Looks interesting. Let's hope our colony is reasonably successful and isn't wiped out by a random plague in the first 6 months...
