And here I thought the magic weapon with the shittiest special power in all of BG2 was the short sword (owned by Haer'Dalis) that gives -2 WIS to anything it hits for 3 rounds. I can't believe there's actually a bard-slaying weapon in the game.

I'm curious to see how many times our hero will die before he manages to win against the Twisted Run. It may turn out to be a rather long update.

Anyway, screw Trademeet : Fate obviously doesn't want to send you on an easy quest. Go and slaughter the Slave Lords instead.

EDIT: The dice seem to hate us (not to mention Ulminati).

Since the next quest should not take more than one update, feel free to suggest the following one as of now.

What's funny is that it would be a very nice weapon if its effect applied to wizards instead of bards. Really illustrates that all classes aren't equal.
I'm not sure if would be that useful even then. Once you get rid of their physical protections, most wizards are pretty squishy, and before then, save-or-die on hit won't do you any good when you can't hit them. It could get around the low-health Contingencies, I guess, if they have those, and they fail their saves in the few hits you get before those kick in.

Besides, there are plenty of ways of making the vanilla wizards suffer. Magic-immune summons and the Mustard Jelly polymorph, for example. Lower Resistance is just hard to use. Course, this is the same AI that makes Liches get all pissy with their own summons, so maybe it's not nice to take advantage of it.

OT: You haven't done the guarded compound, have you? I don't think so, but maybe I've just gone senile. I vote for that if I'm still right in the head. Otherwise, Firkraag.

Guarded compound is kinda dull though. And I don't think Codex has the proficiencies for Celestial Fury

Yeah, I was mostly thinking that it could be useful during the brief moments after a mage's initial protections have disappeared and before his Chain Contingency kicks in. Still, it's true that unless the sword's special effect bypasses Stoneskin, it wouldn't be that useful after all.

The guarded compound is listed as "Slave Lords" in the list that can be found on the first page. I find it a fairly entertaining fight (especially since you have to deal with a fighter using one of the best weapons in the game).

Oh yeah, list. Not sure why I didn't look at that. Now I just feel silly.

I don't care about Celestial Fury, personally; I don't think it's all that great compared to some other weapons (well, a few specific ones, anyway). It's just a neat fight against a few enemies.

...

Looking at it that way, dragon hunting does sound more epic, doesn't it? And after a more low-key quest like Mae'Var's guild (and loose ends), perhaps that wouldn't be out of place.

Temple Ruins it is, then.

I can't wait for the Twisted Rune Rape.
And rape it was. :smug:

Yeah, no.

EDIT: popularity of this thread is now over 9000, meaning one of my photobucket accounts has reached its bandwidth limit. It should reset tomorrow, but updates #3, #9 and #18 are not available today.

Last time on Let's Insane Solo Baldur's Gate 2:

See, Mayvar? I always get my reward in the end, one way or another.

Overall, it was a pretty easy quest, which is probably why our readers (and fate) have decided to send You against much more considerable odds now.

codex_10.jpg
Remind me to thank them later. Wait, did I say 'kill them'?

No, you said thank them.

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, thank. That's what I meant.

Update #22: Dem Bones

bg2_up22_000.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What, really?

bg2_up22_001.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, cowled wizards, look, I am casting spells on the street. With no license. Anyone cares?

bg2_up22_002.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, I thought not.

The spell worked pretty well too.

codex_10.jpg
What can I say, except I just rock everyone's socks off with my mere presence.

bg2_up22_003.jpg

codex_10.jpg
All too easy.

Yes, I was actually wondering about that.

bg2_up22_004.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Useless spells, how neat.

bg2_up22_005.jpg

Since everything seems to come so easy to You recently. How about another challenge?

bg2_up22_006.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What do you mean?

bg2_up22_007.jpg

Since we have a difficult task ahead, it would be natural to adjust our spell selection and rest. I suggest we skip this step, head straight into the frail and see how far we can go.

bg2_up22_008.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Sounds stupid, bothersome and tedious as fuck.

bg2_up22_009.jpg

You're in then?

codex_10.jpg
That depends. Do I have any actual choice?

No.

codex_10.jpg
I'm in, then.

bg2_up22_010.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This is the place? A random house in the middle of the docks?

The door is trappped for a reason.

codex_10.jpg
It is trapped so I can earn 2750 XP for disarming the trap. Other reasons are irrelevant.

bg2_up22_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's see what kind of wonders awaits inside.

bg2_up22_012.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Cow people!

bg2_up22_013.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I know you're all very horny, but there's no need to hurry.

bg2_up22_014.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nice bite, Lilarcor!

lilarcor1.jpg
I always liked mutton.

codex_10.jpg
Beef.

lilarcor1.jpg
That too.

bg2_up22_015.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I don't need three guesses to know what I'll find in here.

bg2_up22_016.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I've only heard about the crystal skull, not golden one.

bg2_up22_017.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I doubt you have any idea how wild my wildest imagininings can be.

bg2_up22_018.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Right, this does not sound fishy at all. However, since you specifically mention a mortal form, I guess I can always kill you if you try to trick me or something.

bg2_up22_019.jpg

codex_10.jpg
'In this city'? What is this, Skyrim? At least there I'd have a quest compass...

I know where they are.

codex_10.jpg
Oh, ok.

bg2_up22_020.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm kind of in a hurry, guys. Can you maybe go and drown yourselfs in the sea of swords to save me some time?

bg2_up22_021.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Guess not.

bg2_up22_022.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Now, this is just ridiculous.

bg2_up22_023.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I guess you haven't heard that this city is very dangerous after dark...

bg2_up22_024.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And you'd be hard pressed to meet anything more dangerous than me!

bg2_up22_025.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Is this the place?

Yup.

bg2_up22_026.jpg

WAIT WRONG DOOR!

bg2_up22_027.jpg

This is the right one. That would have been a major screwup if You entered that other door.

codex_10.jpg
Why? What's wrong with it?

You'll know that quite soon.

bg2_up22_028.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I hate it when you know the future.

bg2_up22_030.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes, I wish to.

bg2_up22_031.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, I vaguely remember something like this happening before.

bg2_up22_032.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Well, you've just awakened your own personal doom by calling me an idiot and a fool.

bg2_up22_033.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Of course.

bg2_up22_034.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Geez, anything else, or are you done for the moment?

bg2_up22_035.jpg

Enemy AI craps out on itself, and the lich immediately attacks the summoned Pit Fiend.

codex_10.jpg
This is too stupid to be true.

bg2_up22_036.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You guys have fun here...

bg2_up22_037.jpg

codex_10.jpg
...while I casually walk away to the side.

bg2_up22_038.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It's good to take a potion break once in a while.

bg2_up22_039.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Enter THE SUPERCODEX!

bg2_up22_040.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So, are your magical protections out already? Because I'm pretty much ready here.

bg2_up22_041.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I see that you still need some time.

bg2_up22_042.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Seems like by attacking this fiend the lich did bite more than he can chew.

bg2_up22_043.jpg

Not interfering in their fight turned out to be a major screwup, because Pit Fiend eventually killed Elemntal Lich (no screenshot of that, sorry), depriving us of sweet and precious experience points.

Load game.

bg2_up22_044.jpg

Immediately after the reload, this happens.

codex_10.jpg
Ok, my turn!

bg2_up22_045.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's start with ring of the ram.

bg2_up22_046.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It's always nice to watch them fly away after being hit with this.

bg2_up22_047.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Time for the serious business!

bg2_up22_048.jpg

I wouldn't bet my head on it, but I think it was a Maze.

Death Count: 127

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I liked it better when he was owned by his own summon. You did not have to reload.

Look at the bright side. We can now try to kill both of them.

bg2_up22_049.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I have some bad feelings about this idea, but here goes nothing.

bg2_up22_050.jpg

codex_10.jpg
On second thought, I am going to retreat now.

bg2_up22_051.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Look, the fiend is dead. I guess we'll have to live with it.

bg2_up22_052.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I never expect my summons to live long, but this is beyond ridiculous.

bg2_up22_053.jpg

codex_10.jpg
How are your magic protections, lich?

bg2_up22_054.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Well, fuck.

bg2_up22_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I too can play this game, though.

bg2_up22_056.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Come on, mantle, disappear already!

bg2_up22_057.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I never thought I would be grateful for random bandits atatcking me, but their mage dropped an actually useful spell.

bg2_up22_058.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Enough of this crap. Breach should end your shenanigans once and for all.

bg2_up22_059.jpg

codex_10.jpg
With a little help from my bow and arrows.

See, we've done it without resting. Wasn't so hard, was it? Only one death.

codex_10.jpg
Let's do some stuff that end with your death next. One will be more than enough.

bg2_up22_060.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Time for my hard-earned reward.

bg2_up22_061.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I remember finding something similar before.

Yes, we got arms and legs after killing Shade Lich down in Athkatla sewers.

codex_10.jpg
Right. Does that mean, we're done with the quest and I can get my beyond wildest imaginings reward now?

Almost.

bg2_up22_062.jpg

We need to make a field trip first.

bg2_up22_063.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Looks interesting.

bg2_up22_064.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh no, I sense priests.

bg2_up22_065.jpg

codex_10.jpg
[INTELLIGENCE] So, I should speak to Odren then?

bg2_up22_066.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What call for aid? I must have missed it.

The rest of this fascinating story can be found under the spoiler tag.

bg2_up22_067.jpg

bg2_up22_068.jpg

bg2_up22_069.jpg

bg2_up22_070.jpg

bg2_up22_071.jpg

bg2_up22_072.jpg

bg2_up22_073.jpg

Sister Garlena is the real reason we're here.

codex_10.jpg
Do you mean...?

No.

bg2_up22_074.jpg

I mean this.

bg2_up22_075.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It is quite nice, if somewhat expensive.

I was reminded about it when we got the Short Sword of Backstabbing from Renal Bloodscalp.

codex_10.jpg
Which is inferior and in the end will never be used by me.

That's life. Also, this sword deals more damage (5-10) than Xzar's Staff-Spear (3-10), so we won't be keeping the latter for backstabbing experiments after all.

bg2_up22_076.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So... I hope you guys are not in a hurry with this quest of yours, because I have to go now. Seeya.

And we need to do one another thing, before we start the finale.

codex_10.jpg
Rest?

Haha, no.

bg2_up22_077.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Three thousand gold? Is it really worth it?

Trust me, it is. :smug:

bg2_up22_078.jpg

codex_10.jpg
He is so going to try to backstab me in a minute.

bg2_up22_079.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Called it.

bg2_up22_080.jpg

codex_10.jpg
A lich. Of course.

bg2_up22_081.jpg

We managed to get a hit before Kangaxx' (Kagaxx's ?) Stoneskin kicked in, and it was a critical too.

codex_10.jpg
Nice! This is what a call a good start, sword!

bg2_up22_082.jpg

Kangaxx immediately uses Time Stop and Spell Trigger, but wastes it on spells which cannot possibly hurt The Codex.

bg2_up22_083.jpg

codex_10.jpg
AIIIE! A lich! Wait, why should I be afraid of it?

Not sure what happened here, to be honest. Our hero got the fear status effect (presumably from Symbol, Fear), but it ended almost immediately. I was pretty lucky to be able to catch it in a screenshot.

bg2_up22_084.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Taste the thunderbolt!

I may be wrong here, but I vaguely remember that liches are immune to lower-level spells. Up to level four, maybe?

codex_10.jpg
Cheating bastards!

bg2_up22_085.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes, die! Dammit!

We managed to get one hit in before another bunch of protection spells kicked in for Kangaxx.

bg2_up22_086.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I hate when they cast Mislead. Good thing I found some oracle scrolls earlier today.

bg2_up22_087.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Stop doing that!

Another hit, another protection spell.

bg2_up22_088.jpg

codex_10.jpg
BURN IN HELL!

I told You liches are immune to spells up to level four.

codex_10.jpg
You also said that you could be wrong there, so I automatically assumed you were.

bg2_up22_089.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck yeah, you are my lich now!

bg2_up22_090.jpg

codex_10.jpg
AAAAAAAAAAH IT BURNS!

bg2_up22_091.jpg

We did that on purpose, as it would look too easy if we defeated Kangaxx on the first try.

Death Count: 128

Load.

codex_10.jpg
When will I be able to cast sunfire?

Soon, you won't need it.

bg2_up22_092.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I might as well use up these scrolls. It's not like I need the money.

bg2_up22_093.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Aha! Nice, Lilarcor!

lilarcor1.jpg
That did not taste very fresh.

bg2_up22_094.jpg

One Time Stop and two million other spells later...

bg2_up22_095.jpg

codex_10.jpg
ARGH! FUUUUUUCK!

bg2_up22_096.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Come on, potions, come on!

bg2_up22_097.jpg

That was not on purpose, though.

Death Count: 129

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Can I rest now?

No. Why don't You stop being a pussy?

codex_10.jpg
Why don't you stop being an ass?

bg2_up22_098.jpg

This time we had no luck getting a hit before Kangaxx' protections started working.

bg2_up22_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This does not burn nearly as bad as before. Losing your touch, Kangaxx?

bg2_up22_100.jpg

I wish I remembered if this was caused by Maze, Power Word, Kill or some other spell.

Death Count: 130

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
Are we just going to keep repeating this shameful performance over and over, or will you allow me to rest eventually?

Try Your best guess.

bg2_up22_101.jpg

:headdesk:

bg2_up22_102.jpg

I don't believe Minor Spell Deflection and Minor Spell Turning are doing JACK SHIT here.

bg2_up22_103.jpg

I want You to know, that You caused it, readers. I hope You're happy now.

Death Count: 131

Reload.

codex_10.jpg
I have nothing to say to you anymore.

bg2_up22_104.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

Two critical misses in a row. Lost Your contact lenses?

codex_10.jpg
Why don't you come down and replace me, dumbass?

bg2_up22_105.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck your protection spells! :x

Wait, it's just Milsead and Spell Turning. He's not immune to weapons.

codex_10.jpg
He's not?

bg2_up22_106.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I see you!

bg2_up22_107.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Meet, my friends: HACK and SLASH!

Ok, now he is protected.

codex_10.jpg
I'm still satisfied.

bg2_up22_108.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You take care of him LFE, while I go chill out in the corner. Let me know when his protection wears off.

bg2_up22_109.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What's that? It has worn off? Good.

bg2_up22_110.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It shouldn't take much more effort to finish him off.

bg2_up22_111.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What.

bg2_up22_112.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Demi-lich? That's like half a lich, right? Half as strong?

You should know that he is immune to any weapon weaker than +4.

codex_10.jpg
Good thing that coincidentally I've just spent fourty thousand gold on a +4 sword, then.

bg2_up22_113.jpg

codex_10.jpg
The slingshot seems to be working too, if kind of slow.

Wait! We should probably...

bg2_up22_114.jpg

...use the Scroll of Protection From Magic. Damn it. :x

Death Count: 132 :x

Loading. :x

codex_10.jpg
So, did you at least save the game when I was out of sight range of the lich?

No! :x

codex_10.jpg
Can I rest then?

No! :x

bg2_up22_115.jpg

Not this shit again! :x

bg2_up22_116.jpg

Whaaaaaaaaa-? It seems The Codex had managed to leave Kangaxx' sight range before getting paralyzed, so there was no follow up to the fear & stun. Kangaxx was just... waiting for us.

bg2_up22_117.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So, he kind of... forgot about me?

Pretty much.

codex_10.jpg
No wonder he got imprisoned here in the first place.

bg2_up22_118.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Why don't you play with my furious flaming friend for a while?

bg2_up22_119.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mislead and spell turning, check.

bg2_up22_120.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This is like rock paper scissors, except you have to throw away your scissors after you use them once.

bg2_up22_121.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Maybe I should have come closer and strike him with Lilarcor, instead of shooting an arrow?

Maybe You should have.

bg2_up22_122.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Your sacrifice will not be forgotten, LFE, at least until your replacement arrives...

bg2_up22_123.jpg

codex_10.jpg
...Which is now.

bg2_up22_124.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Damn, they die like flies.

bg2_up22_125.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Go, avenge your brothers!

bg2_up22_126.jpg

codex_10.jpg
No, don't summon the efreeti! I hate those guys!

bg2_up22_127.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I can hurt Kangaxx now, but I probably should get rid of the efreeti before the demilich arrives.

True.

bg2_up22_128.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You should not be immune to level 3 spells.

bg2_up22_129.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Don't kill him so fast, LFE, I still need a couple of rounds here.

bg2_up22_130.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Did I kill him?

No, he turned into a cloud. Also, Your elemental has been dominated.

codex_10.jpg
Just perfect.

bg2_up22_131.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I hate distractions like this.

bg2_up22_132.jpg

I know. Let's not dwell on it, shall we.

Death Count: 133

Reloading.

codex_10.jpg
How far back do we have to go now?

Not THAT far.

bg2_up22_133.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I will focus on the lich this time. Maybe I can interrupt his spellcasting this way.

bg2_up22_134.jpg

Good thing the Efreeti casts mostly fire spells.

codex_10.jpg
Even better he does not cast them on me!

bg2_up22_135.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Not again!

bg2_up22_136.jpg

codex_10.jpg
These are not the droids you are looking for!

bg2_up22_137.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

bg2_up22_138.jpg

QuickWhatNow?

Use the scroll!

codex_10.jpg
WhichOne?

The expensive one!

bg2_up22_143.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Done. It seems to have cancelled my haste, though.

Yes, You are now immune to all spells, including Your own.

codex_10.jpg
Ok.

We are goining to make it this time. Enter EPIC MUSIC.

That answers my unspoken question whether LFE will be of any use here.

bg2_up22_145.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Whew. Good thing I am immune to that!

bg2_up22_146.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What, I can't cast spells at all?

No? I wasn't aware the scroll worked this way too.

bg2_up22_147.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Good thing I am also a fighter.

Another imprisonment? How many of them does he have prepared?

All of them.

bg2_up22_149.jpg

codex_10.jpg
My divine power seems unaffected by the spell immunity.

Great!

This is not working as well as I'd have hoped for.

We are immune to his spells and we have a reliable, if slow, way of hurting him. The only question is, what will run out faster, our protection from magic or his hit points?

To be honest, this is actually kind of boring. I wish I'd saved ring of the ram for this very moment.

bg2_up22_152.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes!

We've done it! No resting!

bg2_up22_153.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes!

bg2_up22_154.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, what's that?

bg2_up22_155.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I have to admit, this is a mighty fine piece of jewelry.

bg2_up22_156.jpg

codex_15.jpg
Set traps? Is that useful?

Next time: The Codex will fight the weirdest adventuring party ever so far.

Right after resting first.

:smug:

Next quest selection details:
Let's see what kind of surprise fate has in store for us...

1. Trademeet [Rake]
2. Slave Lords [Erebus]
3. Firkraag [Ulminati]
4. Firkraag [Shadenuat]
5. Firkraag [Krivol]
6. Firkraag [Storyfag]
7. Temple Ruins [Rod Rodderson]
8. Firkraag [Azira]

EDIT: we're spared the worst, for now. We'll take on Slave Lords aka Guarded Compound next. This should be yet another quick update, so voting is open again as of now.

:bravo:

Also, Trademeet. Be done with the treefags before going to play with the grown ups.

If my memory's correct, there are some nice items that can be easily obtained on the first level of Watcher's Keep.

Anyway, once you're done with the hardest fights available in Athkatla, I'd say it'll be time for Firkraag.
