First jRPG - Wizardry V I guess is jRPG since it's from Capcom, but if you're talking "anime" style then I would have to say either Chrono Trigger or E.V.O., I can't remember.

First "real" RPG - PS:T

First RPG ever played -

PnP Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition.

First RPG that brought you seriously brought you into the RPG market -

Only gradually got into the 'market'. Played a bit of everything from when I was about eight. I think I played a demo of Ultima at a friend's house, joined the first Everquest... Got Arkania 1 on one of those bundle CD-Roms. Got the Gold Box pack in maybe '96. Also played Runescape at one point. But mostly I liked Strategy games and Flight Sims and stayed on the 'outside' of the CRPG genre (played PnP though).

Return to Krondor and Morrowind followed by Arx Fatalis etc are probably what got me more focussed on CRPGs recently.

First jRPG -

Er... none. The only JRPG I've played and liked is Uncharted Waters by KOEI.

First "real" RPG -

Don't know what that means.

First rogue-like - Diablo

Diablo ain't a roguelike, buddy.

As for the question, I never liked them.

First RPG hybrid -

No idea.

Last RPG played -

Demo of Evil Islands.

Though I am quite busy right now, I am curious...
...what seperates Diablo from a roguelike, except for the mouse-controls and the graphics?

Well if Roguelikes are a variety of RPG (debatable) and Diablo isn't an RPG... Diablo isn't an RPG because all you do is click on your enemies, click-click-click, until they stop moving then click on things on the ground, click-click-click, and every half hour or so click your way out of the level and click to sell/buy equipment never stopping to let your brain function.

Sorry but I call that a pure action game.

Diablo, at least in my mind, was influenced by rogue-likes, but it seems to be kind of genre-defining on its own. Shortly after it was released, I remember seeing the box for it in a store with a friend, and saying to him, "Cool. Kind of like a graphical nethack." Then we played it together in college to kill time instead of studying.

First RPG ever played - Some Dungeons and Dragons sessions with an overweight, balding DM. Funny times but I can't remember most of the adventures.

First RPG that brought you seriously into the RPG market - Planescape: Torment. Much as I had enjoyed Fallout and Baldur's Gate, I wasn't much into CRPGs before I played this. Unfortunately for me I got somewhat addicted to the genre but never found anything that came close to Torment.

First jRPG - Secret of Mana, if I recall correctly. After that it was Shining Force 2, then SF1.

First "real" RPG - I forget. It's a toss up between Baldur's Gate and Fallout, but I'm not entirely sure which came first. But out of those two I enjoyed Fallout more.

First rogue-like - ADOM for a bit, lately some Gear Head.

First RPG hybrid - System Shock 2, then Deus Ex.

Last RPG played:

  • CRPG: Vampire: Bloodlines. Can't remember before that...
  • JRPG: Shadowrun (Genesis), Ogre Battle (SNES) (Can never seem to finish this game), Shining in the Darkness (Genesis), Shining Soul (GBA) (Craptastic).
  • Hybrid: Freedom Force (PC), Bloodnet (PC), Wizardry 8 (PC), Front Mission: Gun Hazard (SNES).

First ever: Ultima IV, I think, in the mid 90s on an elder cousin's C64.

First seriously: Fallout.

First jRPG: I am ideologically pure.

First "real" RPG: Mario Brothers, I was playing an Italian plumber.

First hybrid: Depending on what's a hybrid, either Diablo or Deus Ex.

Last RPG played: I'm replaying DX right now, but ignoring replays, I guess it's Bloodlines, which is a bit sad. Thank goodness for PnP.

Dave Brevik says "Moria was an influence on the core structure of the game : it had a single town with a few shops and an infinitely deep, random dungeon down below. It also had random items, and a second version of the game sported named unique monsters. Warcraft was an influence because of the twist it had put on traditional gaming : what was turn based in the past, Warcraft made real-time. This is the twist we applied to RPG's with Diablo."

Allowances will have to be made for an aging memory that was pretty poor to start with, but to the best of my recollection:

First RPG ever played - probably Ultima Underworld: Labyrinth of Worlds
First RPG that brought you seriously into the RPG market - Lands of Lore
First jRPG - NA
First "real" RPG - one of the Ultimas I suppose, but I can't remember which one (crap memory as I said)
First rogue-like - the original, but I got bored quickly so it doesn't really count
First RPG hybrid - Morrowind I guess, depending on what you define as a "hybrid"
Last RPG played - guess that depend on whether you mean "real" or "hybrid" and what those terms mean to you in the first place... I don't really care much myself as long as the game's good and seems to be an RPG to me seeing as I'm a faggoty l00ser ESF forums refugee who shouldn't be here besmirching the hardcore nature of the Codex with his weak and diluted opinions, but from one end of the Spectrum According To Me it was Sacred and from the other (well for half the game anyway) Bloodlines
