Really, I should stop giving those 'update will appear x' as I bit suck with keeping terms. Update may be a bit... Surprising. It will be a bit longer then most of those before. Many rolls, searching and stuff.

Someone take this fucking NWN from me or those modules will stole most of my free time.

Also, thanks Nevill for correcting my mistakes in chapter 0, edited version should appear tomorrow.

Also, again inspired by Fangshi, I will try to make short summary at the end of chapters.

Chapter 2
From deepest cellars to highest roofs

DAY 1
Slowly nodding to yourself, you think about the things that Falr and the pair of assassins have told you... you should be able to do everything in... three days. Yes, that should be enough. You look at Avian and Natrila, quietly talking with Falr. He seems to be disturbed that someone else wants to be a part of your group... or rather, that they are here on the private orders from one of the Council members.

'Eh, troublesome as always. You'd think Sir Varnemo could have at least sent me a message. We damn near attacked you.' he sighs, leaning on one of your chairs. You shake your head and think 'you are the one who almost attacked them, not me', but say nothing.

'As if anyone in the Council would do that when they send their people to deal with a private matter. Come on, Falr.' Avian shakes his head... they seem to know each other, but this isn't suprising considering that Falr works for every Council member. 'Anyway, I hope you really don't mind us around. We are only here to help.'

'Not at all. I just ask for a warning next time.' he gives Avian a forced smile, while Natrila listens to their conversation. She seems to talk only when she absolutely has to. Who knows, maybe she is just a silent type. 'Anyway, Weaver.' he turns to you. 'Have you decided what to do?'

'I did. All of us are going to Drunk Ward, to meet with Castor. Not only that, of course, but this comes first. I may need you there, so stay close.' they nod to you as they stand up. You take your blade and the belt, and quickly put your armor on. You take your throwing knives with you... the usual six, plus two more, hidden thoroughly inside the belt pockets.

Finally you have the occassion to wear your new cloak! Yes, it is good to be back.

In a few moments, you are ready to go. You leave a short message to Regreh that you are out to work for some time and that you probably will be back tonight. You also add the standard phrase that you left on every note since after you founded the House. "If I don't come back in 24 hours, retreat and do not try searching for me". You catch yourself when you almost add a part about contacting Adbel or another House agent... damn. You shake your head, walking out of your safehouse. You close the door and hide the key in the usual place.

The streets of Dwarf Ward smell like always - of gas and smoke. You follow Falr as he guides you - not that you don't know the way to Drunk Ward, but you are thinking about that what you will do when you get there... ask Castor for details, that's for sure. Patrol around the Ward, keeping and eye out for leads and ways out if you ever find yourself trapped there during a demon attack. Two or three escape routes should be enough. The forces stationed there, this is important too. Secure places... yes. A lot of things to check, and only one day...

You walk through Wizards and Circle Wards, thinking silently. Searching the entire city won't be easy, and you know that. Hmm, yes. Where could they hide the anchors? You look at wizards' towers... Castor said something about high points in town... Damn, maybe one of the wizards is working for them, or perhaps they are forced to? It would be a perfect place to hide one of those. You nod to yourself, and your mind starts working like a dwarven clock. One of the possible places to check in the near future.

You stop thinking about anything other than your current task as you reach the gates of the Drunk Ward... damn. There is a giant hole in the wooden gate, looks like it got hit with some sort of burning projectile. A big one. You frown... is this the work of wizards or demons? Falr only shows his badge to the guards at the gate, and you walk in faster then you ever could have on your own. Assassins are walking almost next to you.

'What the fuck happened here?' astonishment isn't enough to describe how you feel about what this place has become. The entire Ward has turned into either a battlefield, or a giant military encampment, perhaps a bit of both. Everywhere you look you see wizards, guards or mercenaries walking around, talking, preparing meals or doing all the things you would expect to see in an army camp... but not in the middle of fucking Larnmarn!

'Demons happened. Believe me, you don't want to know how it looked after the first attack. I was vomiting all day after they called us here. Bodies everywhere. Half of the Ward was burning, and other half was about to crumble. We killed some of those bastards, but they killed a lot more of our people.' he mutters and grits his teeth. Yeah, he is one of the Larns. Pissed off Larns. You almost feel sorry for the demons. 'Anyway, this way. Professor's tent is over there.' he leads the way again, diving between boxes and tents. You see some larger tents in the mix, - those probably belong to the commanders of mercenary units, - some wizard tents, and those of Guard forces. You try to estimate what their numbers are, but without asking the commanders you might as well try to count them all by yourself...

After a few minutes, you get to another gate, built in a small palisade. Probably the local headquarters. This time they don't even check you once they see Falr. But their eyes widen when they see Avian and Natrila. Assassins walking together with a Guard? And who is that hooded person that they seem to escort? You think you'll be the main source of gossips for a while.

'I want to get in, you bloody brat!' you suddenly heard from the other side of the palisade. You know that voice...

'Regreh, what the hell are you doing here?' you look at him from the other side of the gate. He seems to be arguing with one of the guards.

'Woah!' he looks at you, surprised. 'Weaver... I, uh... I wanted to talk to Castor, but they just refuse to let me in!' he pokes the guard with his finger. The guard glares at him with murder intent written plainly on his face.

'You do not have permission to get in, sir dwarf. I told you that like ten times now.' the guard repeats, angry and annoyed. You are not too suprised.

'Eh, let him in.' You sigh. 'He is with me.'

The guard looks at you, then at Regreh who is already walking through the gate. The dwarf grins and sticks his tounge out. The guard mutters something rude as he turns his back on both of you. You suddenly stop and pull Regreh behind one of the tents.

'Now, what the fuck do you want form Castor? Don't lie, Regreh.' you look him in the eyes as he almost jumps, surprised by your actions.

'I... I think he may be working with demons.' he whispers. 'He knows too much. How come other people don't know what he knows? It smells like bullshit from ten miles away, girl.' he folds his arms on his chest. 'And don't tell me you don't see it as well.'

You look at him and slowly, slowly shake your head. 'Regreh, first things first. He is working with us. I don't trust him either, but he CAN'T be working with the demons, as he was locked with us for a year. And it started six months ago. Second, that he is a demonologist doesn't mean he serves demons. I know how you look at these things, as your kin fought with them for thousands of years. And last... even if he is working with the demons, you shouldn't be here, but instead work with me as we planned. You aren't a fucking spy or a vigilante to do things on your own, not when people think you work with or for me. Another stunt like that, another mistake or another broken word and you are out of my life, do you understand?' your voice is cold and honest. This is getting annoying.

He looks at you, doubt in his eyes, but after a while he sighs and nods. 'I'm sorry, and I understand. Eh, but we are here already, so maybe we should go pay him a visit together?' he smiles and doesn't even wait for your reply as he starts walking away, but you grab his shoulder.

'You won't be talking to Castor. Not unless I let you, dwarf.' he looks at you, surprised. 'I'm here to do my job, not to argue about some old wars. Can you accept it, or do do I have to call for the guards to show you out?'

He frowns at you, but nods, without saying anything more. Finally, you get back to Falr and the assassins. They glance at you and Regreh, but keep silent. Falr walks you to the biggest tent in the middle of the encampment. You get in to see some people talking to Castor... damn, he even looks diferrent now! Some kind of luxury robes, a steel staff in his hands... he even talks and gestures like another person. You come closer and he finally notices your presence.

'Commanders, I am sorry, but I have an important matter to attend to. Orders of the Council. We will finish our discussion later.' he dismisses them with a nod as he turns to you. You know some of them. Regina Straser, second in command of the Guard, current commander of the Guard forces in Drunk; Oaritan Salare, commander of the Bloody Larns and a Council agent; Prater Louse, commander of the Brothers... and some other people, some dressed in their mercenary company tabards, and one in Wizard Guild robes. They glance at you and walk away, nodding to Castor and whispering between themselves. When they are out, Castor sighs and shakes his head.

'Damn, they are really stubborn. But they are wise and have some experience in battles, so at least I am not working with amateurs. Good to see you again, my dear friends.' he smiles to you and opens his arms, almost like he would hug you, but doesn't make a move towards you. He looks a bit like a merchant talking about his wares. 'But I assume you aren't there to reminiscence about our journey. By the way, thank you, Falr. You got them here really fast, faster then I thought you could. Impressive.' Falr nods to him and smiles. 'I do not know our new friends... but I saw enough of their guilds to guess who they are. I'm Castor Bepsidan, professor of demonology and the current Council's... 'consultant' on demonic matters.'

'Avian and Natrila, members of the Assassins Guild, like you have already wisely deduced, sir.' Avian bows slighlty. Natirla offers him only a curt nod. 'We are here to help Weaver.'

'Good to know we have a support like this. We may need it... but I wanted to ask you all a small favor. Leave me and Weaver alone for five minutes.' you look at Castor, surprised. Everyone stares at Castor and nod in agreement... except Regreh. He eyes the young demonologist... and then he looks at you. His eyes speaks for him. "Be careful with that brat." Castor coughs, and Regreh finally leaves.

'I'm sorry for that, but I wanted to talk with you about a private matter.' he scratches his chin and leans on a steel staff he is holding.

'What do you mean?' you fold your arms, looking at him and waiting for his response. He sighs as he starts speaking again.

'I know you don't trust me. I... I lied to you, but you already know that. I'm sorry, but I was forced to do it for my own safety.'

'Well, I must tell that you are very good at lying. You act... no. You are a different person than the one I met in Ravenhord. For an entire year you were behaving differently. Damn, you are a really good actor.' you frown at him, and he grimaces.

'To be honest, it wasn't an act. You see... Regreh was a bit right about that demon thing.' he smiles dryly, and you see his eyes flash with a weak red light. You place your hand on the blade, fast enough to surprise him. 'I didn't mean I serve demons, calm down. You should know that Castor Bepsidan isn't exactly one person.' he chuckles in his old voice, just as he did back in prison. 'There are actually two people. You already know Castor. Well, now, nice to meet you, Weaver.'

You looks at him with incredulity in your eyes. 'What the fuck are you talking about?' but you release your grip on the blade a little.

Castor laughs as his eyes flash again. They are red as blood now. 'I'm Varagtomn, a traveler from Sixth Tower of Rahelo, an explorer and a wizard, now trapped by a pact in this world called Zinoth, in the body of this young boy. But you can call me Varag.' he speaks quietly, almost in a whisper. 'In other words, I'm a demon.'

Well, fuck. "Professor", what a joke. A great fucking joke. So Regreh was right to some degree. This is the reason why he know so much about demonology. It isn't too hard when you are a fucking demon, right?

'Wait, wait. So you are... one of them, right? Does the Council know?' you still can't believe your ears. Are they really so blind? On the other hand, you were. Sat in a prison with a demon for a year, and didn't know shit about it, just great.

'Of course, it was their idea to tell you. Well, they actually left it to me to decide, so I thought I'd tell you. For the sake of working together.' he smiles as his eyes become normal again.

'Well... thanks? It is good to know that I am going to work with two people in one body. Anyway, who else knows about this?' you sigh and rub your forehead... as if you didn't have enough on your plate before, now you must worry about this shit, too.

'No one else but you, the Council, and their choosen agents. Like Falr. He doesn't mind, as long as I stop those damn barbarians out there.' he grimaces again, when he think about the demons... well other demons.

'Aren't those your kind?' you ask. He looks at you in shock.

'How could you even say that? Those are dirty apes from Corvus lands! I would never even talk with those damn savages.' he shakes his head in disgust. 'Corvus himself is a fine man, he probably doesn't even know that his generals are playing their own game. Damn, he was ordered to serve with them. But those two morons, Umbra and Pulvis... they are another story. They are... bright and successful in their retardation. Yes, this should be enough to say. They are idiots, but dangerous ones.

'You know them?' you sit in a chair next to you, while Castor/Varag remains standing. He even start walking around in circles.

'Of course I know them. I'm a noble... as they are. Damn, if I say it again, I will vomit. Anyway, I assume you ask for more then this, so - yes, I know them. Umbra is actually a real human, or at least his body is. Pulvis is a minotaur... but I assume that you haven't heard about anything like this. He looks like a mix of a giant bull and a huge human with hooves. And he is damn strong. Umbra himself is a skilled wizard, proficient in both offensive and defensive magic.'

'Can you tell me more about their master, this Corvus?' you should learn what you can about them in case they ever get here. 'Maybe how we could fight him and his peo-' before you can ever finish, Castor, or rather Varagtomn, laughs.

'Haha, oh sweet Emperor, "fight with Corvus". Haha!' he wipes a tear from his eye. 'I'm sorry, but there will be no fight if Corvus ever gets to Zinoth. Umbra and Pulvis, yes. They are probably on the level with your archmages. But Corvus? One of Garmako Generals, one of The Invincible Fifty? A friend and a companion to Emperor Amarthon himself? Haha, no, you stand no chance and no one in this world does, unless your Gods come back.' he stops for a moment and thinks. 'Oh, I forgot about thr Dwarven Gods, yes, they might be able to deal with him. But even if they would... uh. How to say it? It would depend on what they will do. What will the Emperor hear. If he were to come here alone, if it were a duel - something that Corvus dreamt about for ages, to die in a honorable duel, - the Emperor would send for his body, and that would be it. Not that I think any of their gods can best him. He did it before. Killed a god, I mean. But if they do it in any other way...' he smiles in way that make you shudder. 'The Emperor himself... how to say it best... he respect his Generals' wishes and beliefs. He is almost flawless... almost. Maybe except that he likes... the other sex a lot. And I mean it, he has many wives and he loves to fuck them. It is actually one of the things he likes most after ruling and fighting. But his second greatest flaw is that he loves his friends and companions. Maybe he would send one of his wives here.'

You look at Castor doubtfully. 'Yeah, a wife of the Emperor of a space empire. Should I shit my pants now?'

'Actually, if this ever happened, I would rather find another world to live on. Some of his wives are also his generals - The Invincible Fifty. They aren't called that for show. I mean, they aren't immortal, no one is, but they are hard to kill. Hard enough to conquer 20 000 worlds for him. And rule them in his name, of course, under his orders. Their loyalty to him is as certain as that there is Void beyond the Voal. I know what I'm saying, Weaver. My mother is one of them.' he shrugs and winks.

'Wait, you are the Emperor's son?' your eyes widen.

'No, of course not. If I were, this world would be his now. Even if he doesn't care about having it. Zinoth is... an anomaly plane, as we call it. It isn't valuable in any meaning of the word. It is interesting and unique because of the Tear, and of the Voal that makes it so hard to get in there. This is why I'm sure that this invasion is only Umbra's and Pulvis' private escapade. And as for answering your question in more detail - I'm a son of one of his wives, but not his son. I'm a bastard. And not just because of my big ego back in the day.' he grins. 'Still, I am pretty important and it was possible for me to maybe even become someone like... uh, those two under my mother's command, but I wanted to be an explorer. I was actually living in the Capital Palace for some time in my life. Damn, I could talk to the Emperor without requesting an audience, and this means a lot, believe me. And should you ask why he allowed me to live if he cares about his wives so much - like I said, he really respects other people's ways. He doesn't mind that his wives sleep with other people if they so wish.'

You think... well, shit. Thanks dead Gods that this isn't some kind of an official expedition, because it could end rather... badly for everyone. Anyway, if he tells you that much, why not get a bit more?

'So... this Emperor. What is he like?'

'Oh, Weaver, Weaver. If you only could imagine our Emperor... It is like trying to describe a song of a siren, two suns of my homeworld, or a rainbow above great waterfalls of Xarter.' he sighs and shakes his head. 'He is a human, you know. Most of people out there looks like humanoids, but he is genuinely a human... you could say, he is like your Xyon. He decided that it was time to end wars between countless worlds and unite them under one banner. That was a long time ago. The Invincible Fifty are either people that were with him from the start, or those he defeated and offered mercy to under a single condition that they would rule their worlds for him. Well, his wives didn't have that choice. ' he chuckles. 'He is really obsessed with sex. Like, really damn hard. It is the first thing he does when he conquers any world on his own - finds the most beautiful woman and fucks her. And marries her. But he isn't a savage or something, believe me. Most of them love him now and if they don't, he doesn't force them to. My mother was a queen of my homeworld, she was a commander of its united armies before he invaded. It's a long story, but let's get back to him. He is wise, strong, caring and... pretty much perfect. This is why he has so many loyal followers.'

'Huh. So maybe it wouldn't be so bad under his rule. Is he mortal?' you scratch your head. If the demon is telling the truth, maybe it really wouldn't be so bad?

'Everyone is mortal, Weaver.' Castor grins. 'There are just some people that are damn hard to kill, like your Circle. Anyway, we talked for a long time. I think you wanted to talk about something else. After all, we have a job to do.' he leans on his staff again.

He is right. 'I need more information about the anchors and about any dangers we may encounter. I need to examine the Ward, and I prefer to have you at hand to look around and comment on what we find. I want to know the numbers of the combat-ready forces. Any plans of the Ward, with safe areas and hideouts, would be good, too.'

'Like I said before, an anchor can not be moved, it looks like a candelabrum made of wood, with crystals or something else floating above it. Don't hit it or move it, because it will explode after two minutes and the explosion would be strong enough to crumble most of walls around. One of them must be somewhere above ground level - the higher, the better.'

'I had an idea... is it possible to hide an anchor in the Wizard Ward? You told me about magical fields and the possibilty of it being hidden in places like this.' he looks at you and nods slowly.

'I already asked the Wizards Guild's master to look around the towers, he found nothing... but it may be just that well hidden, really. A wizard's tower is his fortress, after all... or... oh, for fuck's sake.' he becomes pale. 'I don't like that idea, but... what if Umbra and Pulvis have their own man in the Council? They weren't successful thus far, but how come nobody even suggested searching for something that might be connected to the portal. I think a mage as powerful and old as he is - and believe me, he is a powerful one - could at least have suspected something like this.'

You shake your head and bite your lip. 'If you are right, then we may have a problem. Thank Gods I already have a plan. But we must warn Alexander about this possibilty. I will do this as soon as I am able to, and I will do this before I contact the wizards. For now, we go with my plan. Let's go look around the Ward.' you nod and he responds in the same manner.

***
It takes you almost 15 hours to look around the whole Ward, but you get what you wanted. You found three possible ways in and out of the Ward - one by the only not destroyed underground tunnel leading to the neighbouring Wards. Another one through the main gate. And last but not least - the smugglers' way dug inside the city walls. It was well hidden, but it wasn't hard to find with Castor's help of and a few knowledgeable thieves. With these, you should be able to get out from almost anywhere in the Ward.

Of the hideouts - nothing. Almost every building in the Ward is either ruined or is made into some sort of fortification for Larmarn forces.

Of the forces stationed in the Ward, there are almost 5000 mercenaries, divided into smaller squads under most experienced commanders of companies. Two thousands guards, including those stationed in the Wards next to Drunk, just in case. Almost half a thousand of wizards, either freelancers or Guild members. Two hundreds of thieves, mostly armed with ranged weapons and stationed on city walls, along with some of the mercs. Half a hundred of Assassins. It's a big force, but Castor quickly points out that if a stable portal opens, they will fight for time, not for victory, and though they may be able to hold them off for a while, eventually they would lose due to enemy numbers. He is sure that the enemy has more then twenty thousands of their own soldiers with them, but the thing that is holding them is space - they can't send in all of their forces at once.

You found a few safe spots after talking to the commanders. Unsurprisingly, most of those were in their fortified camps. You will be able to hide in a middle of a battle, if you ever happen to get into one. Avian and Natrila also help you with this, with their knowledge of sieges and the streets of the Ward.

Of the anomalies, you have found something interesting during the inspection of the area where the portal appears. Even though people and everything else melts when the portal opens, the road itself doesn't show any signs of being affected by hot temperatures. Castor quickly adds that they could do it with little to no effort, but perhaps they don't want to do it for some reason. Maybe they want the ground to be flat to make the movement of their forces easier... or maybe there is something more to it? You ask for more details, about anything that might be located under the area, but you must wait for a day or two before the information becomes available - the Drunk Ward tunnels are mostly colapsed or flooded, and though their plans should be somewhere in the archives, Falr doesn't know where and how much time it would take to search for those.

***
And so passes the first day of your job. Tired as hell, you finally say farewell to Castor and get back to your safehouse... you must be ready for tomorrow, after all.

Yep, first part out of three is finished. Tell me if you want the next two parts together or divided like this.

Only two rolls for this part, as you get most of knowledge from either people around, your part and your own ideas. Rolls were about hideouts and anomalies. You get pretty good rolls for second one, for first, it was somewhere in the middle of scale.

Added Varag to character sheet as another Castor part.

Day 2

You finally get back to safehouse, just before dusk. Muttering and listening to coversation between Avian and Falr about future of Larnmarn. Natrila sometimes adds word or two, but nothing more. Boring evening... but you thanks Dead Gods for that. You deserve some peace, don't you? After all this field work you finally gain some informations to plan some movements around Drunk Ward if you will ever need to do it.

Regreh tries to talk with you about your coversation with Castor, but you quickly changes subject. He mutters something to you as he get away from safehouse, saying that he will 'Come back soon.' It more then easy to see that he is angry at you, but well, it is better to cause his anger then make him kill Castor... or try doing it.

Listening to Avian and Falr talk and later joining them give you oportunity to ask them about... well, themselves. Falr is pretty young, around 27 years old. He is one of lesser officers in Guard itself (commanding small squad of guards), but almost everybody on higher rangs know about his jobs for Council and so he is treated more like someone with special privileges. He is a bit suprised when you ask him about his family, but he is happy to answer.

'You know, I'm pretty sure that I look more like people from Known World, but my father was actually one of people from Deep North. You know, those lands far beyond Shonzang. Tough people, as far as I know. I never was there, but I heard a lot of stories about life there. Yeah, I'm pretty much half blood Northerian, like they call themselves.' his voice is full of proud tones. Good to know, even if this is only pointless information. It is always good to ask people about them, especially those that you work with.

Avian don't tell much about himself. You remember a bit about him from old times, when Alexander was young. He was his best friend back then and seems that he still is. Actually, not only that, he admits that he is Second in Command of Assassins, which isn't so suprising, considering that Alexander know him for so long. When asked about Alexander, he is more eager to talk - Alex is as great leader as his father was, prehaps even better. For first time, Natrila quickly confirms same thing. Huh, they really are loyal to him.

You talk with them about many not important things for few hours, before they admit they must finally go to rest. You look at dwarven clock on wall and whistle. It is far after middlenight hour. Yawning, Falr say goodbye and go back to Guard Barracks, promising that he will came back tomorrow morning.

'Uh, Weaver, you know... we don't have any place to stay around. Not many times we are around Dwarf Ward, not that we don't like it. It is just that we don't have much work to do around there.' he chuckles. 'Dwarves like to solve their problems alone. Can we stay there tonight?'

'No problem, really. I don't play to sleep today anyway so my bed will be free. Also, Castor probably don't come back from... wherever he is now, so fell free to say as long as you need.' you shrugs. Avian respond with smile and yawn.

'Thanks you. I will go to sleep now... I'm tired as hells. Ruining around between soliders and searching things... damn it. Killing people is easier then being a spy, it seems.' he chuckles as his female companion shakes her head in silent moment of embarrassment. He wishes you goodnight and get to bedroom. For a while, you consider taking a quick bath, but that can wait, after all. You don't need to sleep as much as you needed when you was human, right? Oh, it is very useful when you do job like this, but it feels rather... weird. Really, if people with sleep problems feel this like you do, you pity them.

Natrila looks at you, for a while after Avian disappared behind bedroom door. He seems to think for a longer while, before she finally speaks.

'Hmm, Weaver... I hope you don't mind I call you like that. I have a question for you.' she looks directly into your eyes.

'I don't mind, Natrila. Ask away.' you lean on table with your elbows on it.

'Well... How long you know Alexander... he talks about you like he... well... when he talks about you, he seems to treat you like someone he know his entire life.' she turns away her eyes. Huh, you didn't expected that question. You smile to her.

'Heh, he talks about me? Weird, I don't remember him talking about me with anyone. I hope he don't spread too many rumors. But, well... I knew his father and I know him very well.' for a while she thinks about your answer and then nod.

'Don't worry... he don't talk about you with anyone else then his closest friends. But, I didn't knew you knew his father. Huh, he never mentioned that. I quess he don't like talking about old times, he isn't type of man that like nostalgia.' she smiles, for first time. She is... pretty when she smiles. Don't looks so snobbish.

'Yes, he always was rather thinking more about future and present. Focused on present. May I ask you about something too?' she looks a bit suprised, but nods. 'Why did you asked?'

She looks even more suprised and looks away for a while. You see her... blush. Oh... that's why. You smile to her and this is warm smile. Funny that girl ask you about him... you never would think about that somebody will ever ask you about thing like that.

'We... I mean, Alexander and I. Uh, we are couple. I mean, we aren't married or something.' She quickly raise her hands and shake her head. 'I just mean that he... don't speak much about either his father or anybody else close to him. Only person that know something more about him is Avian, but he don't want to talk with me about it. He says that it is... uh... "Not woman thing if man don't want to talk about it." He is damn mean.' she sounds like young girl, right now... damn, how old is she? You can't say really. She can be anywhere between 20 and 40 years old. Maybe she is really kind of bloodmix? Quarter-elf?

'He never liked to talk about anything connected to his young years... But I think he will tell you, when he will be ready. I didn't knew that you are couple, however. Well, maybe becouse I didn't contacted him for a long time, but still, it is suprise for me. He never had time to... how he said it... "Romances and other heart things." 'you chuckle and shakes your head. Natrila responds with nod and small smile.

'Sounds like him... anyway, thanks you for answer. I think I will go to rest, too. Goodnight.' she rise up from chair and go to bedroom, closing door behind her.

For almost whole night, you are alone. Almost. Around dawn, you heard silent knock to door... code. Four knocks. It can be only Falr or Regreh. You slowly get to door and looking though eyehole you see Falr behind it. Huh, so early? You open the door.

'Oh, Weaver, I'm sorry that I wake you up so early.' he sounds really sorry, huh. And yawns. 'But you know, I'm here to serve and so...' he scratches his head and whisper. 'Packages are in lower tunnels, waiting for you.'

Oh. That... he seems troubled. You ask him to stay inside safehouse, when you slowly get to ground floor, only to find another hole, with two Bloody Larns guarding it. They salute to you when you jump inside. Small group of people is in tunnel - three guards, two wizards and group of convicts, in chains and with blindfolded. Five of them. You glups... damn it. It is time to kill someone already. Well, you know that probably deserve this, but this don't make it easier.

Guards stare at you in silence, when you slowly come next to first of prisoners. You pull of his blindfold off. He looks at you, suprised, when you also pull gag in his mouth.

'Where the fuck we are and who they fuck are you? Are you there to free us? Huh.' he eyes you suspiciously. For some reason, you smile to your own joke.

'Free you... yes, you can say so. Just curious, but why you was locked?' you pull your gloves of your hands.

'Uh... I killed someone when I was robbing some shop. Usuall stuff, you know. Shit happends, right?' he tries to smile, but it is more of grimace. You look at you, feeling as always when you must do this... weird.

'Yes, shit happends.' you reach your hand to your eyes, opening them wide with your hand and place color lences on sheet of cloth, giving it to one of wizard. When you turn to prisoner, he pales. In a matter of seconds, his face is almost grey.

'Oh, fuck. No, no, no, no...' he looks at you scared. 'I know that we deserve execution, but not like this. You can't allow her, guys.' he looks at guards that only stare at him, without word. He tries to move away, pull rest of people with him, but magic keep chains still. He can't move even an inch. Prisoner eyes widens when he understand that he will be devoured.

'Get away, you bitch! GET AWAY FROM ME... hgrh!' he suddenly coughs when you place your hands on his naked neck, from behind. You start sucking energy, as you always do... your mind become empty when you feel how live force flows through your body, slowly. Man tries to reach your hands and push them, but he just can't with cuffs on his wrists.

'Funny.' you think. You heard your own words inside your head, when you think about what you are doing right now. 'I wonder if live force really have tastes or it is only my imagination. This one, tastes like... clean water. I can feel his soul, wriggling in pointless fight. He tries to fight, but he can't. You can't fill void, my dear man. It is too empty to ever be filled with your power, your life. More you fight, less time is left for you in this world. Pity, isn't it? You took life of another person, but I did same, many times. Not always people that deserved it. Yet, you are in my hands, now. And you... dies.'

(Soundtrack for this part, until end of devouring - Blackmore's Night - Cartouche)

You hear how his heart stop beating and how his last breath fly away from his mouth, when you take his life. And feel fire, flowing inside your body, burning in empty place, where your own life should be. Taken from you. You release him from your touch and push him a bit. His body hits the floor without any other sound then hit itself. You smile, for some reason. You still are half empty, but you know that there is more tasty live waiting for you.

You devour second one faster, at least you feel like it was faster. You know it is always same time, around 10 minutes. Ah, you feel great. It is like eating and drinking after weeks of hunger, you swear. It taste like food of Gods. At least you think that is how it should taste.

Three more... but those are bonus. You don't need to devour them. But you deserve some more power, don't you? You realise how you see them and this terrify you. Not as persons, but as food source. Despite that, you still stand next to thrid one and start your feast. Ah, you didn't ate too many people above that you ever needed... sometimes. Not may ocasions ever appeared to feed like that. You know that power is disturbing your own mind now, but it doesn't matter. More energy is waiting for you. Yes, more... more.

You eat third and fourth one with even more pleasure then you did before. It is like drinking most tasteful meat or eating meat so great that you must eat more and more. And you can, as you will never be full. What a great feeling! It almost repay for your curse... or maybe it is blessing. Maybe you really are superior to those mere mortals, like many souless claims? Maybe they are there only for your kind, to serve?

'NO! I can't let hunger control me... damn it. Maybe it was bad idea... but I can't stop now... I can... I must... finish.' you look at last one. He is younger then others. Probably teenager. Twenty years old? Doesn't matter, anyway. You pull his blindfold and smile to him as you move your face very close to his. He looks at you, scared, still with gag in his mouth. Your smile slowly turns into creepy grin, as he understand what happend to people before him. Tears appear in his eyes as you laughs.

'Come here, my boy. Time to dance with me! Release him, wizards!' they look at you, suprised and fascinated. 'Do what I say!' Finally, they release young man from his cuffs. He looks at you scared, when you grab his hands and start whriling around, pulling him... you are stronger then he could ever be now. You feel power! Yes, this meaning of life! Those moments. You start sucking his life though his hands as you dance around with him, while he is more pulled when dancing. You heard your own giggle as he became slower and slower. You suck him, dancing around, when he tries to pull his hands away and run. But he can't. Finally, he screams something, but gag don't let you hear what he says. It doesn't matter, anyway! You release his body from your hug and he falls on the floor. Guards and wizards look at you, both scared and amazed... or fascinated.

Finally, you finished your feast. Ah, what a great power is now inside your body. You feel it and you know that there is more of energy then you need. You need to gather more. Yes, more, more! You want to go outside, to town! To feast... But you feel how suddenly, your mind pushes your own desires. You feel how your will slowly came back... damn it. You almost lost it. You shake your head, scared by your own hunger. No, you must get away from this place... fast. You jump and run up, to your safehouse. Rushing through door, you run to bathroom, while suprised Falr almost fall from chair, reading some book. You quickly undress and fill bath with hot water, almost jumping into it.

You don't know how much time you spend in hot water, but slowly, your senses came back to you... damn it... you never felt so much power... you never devoured five persons in row. 'Gods, so this is why people fear us...' you think and splash some water in your face.

'Damn... I almost lost it. Gods, fuck this.' you shiver when you feel how this weird energy is burning inside of you. You made it, sane and controled yourself. Your will was strong enough. You finally get away from bath and pull clog. Dressing into your armor, you open bathroom door. Falr is sleeping on one of books, snoring. Regreh in nowhere to be seen. Bedroom doors are closes as they were. You look at clock and gasp. More then five hours already passed. Damn it. Losing control for five hours. This could be so dangerous... fuck.

You spend rest of your time reading some book, about history of Dragon Empire. Nothing interesting, but maybe becouse history never was too interesting for you, unless you can use it in any of your jobs. You heard silent belt of clock. Dawn has come.

***

When your companion woke up, you finally had some time to tell him about your plan. After you tell them what you think they should do, they nods without any objections. Avian quickly volunteer to go to Thieves Guild - he promises that he will arrange some skilled thieves in searching teams.

You decide that Natrila should go with you to finally meet Alexander and ask him to add some assassins to your teams. Yes, it should be good idea. He will probably agree.

In meantime, Falr will wait for you and after you finish your talk with Alexander, you will go together to Wizards Guild... you know that it is possible that someone, maybe even Guild Master of it can work with demons, so you will try to pull this careful way, but still get wizards support. He can't just disagree. It would raise too many questions. And if it isn't him, you will get yourself magical support.

You smile to your plan and finally, start it. Natrila guide you to Assassins House, even if you know where it is. You always would found that place. Too many memories. You look at old, wooden doors of building looking as many other in Citadel Ward. You look at guards inside - they never are assassins, but those are actually Vanermo family guards. Noble family, after all. Going though corridors, you look at training classes, sometimes with opened doors. People look at you, suprised - you are stranger here, after all. But they relax when they see Natrila next to you. Good, they don't remember. It is important.

Finally, you get into private wing of Assassin Master rooms, to his office to be more accurate. Guards let you in without any word, when they see Natrila. You see Alexander, wirting something with black pen. Probably some sort of letters. It is really suprising how much paperwork people must fill to kill someone. Well, part of Larmarn charm. You do it that way or you hang.

'Oh, Weaver.' he rises from his chair and come closer to you, hugging you. 'Good to see you, Auntie.' you look at him, suprised. As Natrila do. 'What, can't a man be happy that his aunt is safe and alive.' he grins as he look at your face. 'I would do it before, but sadly, I must keep my mask for Council. You know how is it.'

You nods... work is work. How many times you was forced to act like that becouse of jobs? Gods only knows. 'Anyway, I'm here. You wanted to meet me, didn't you?'

'I called you only becouse I knew you would to it after some time anyway.' he smiles to you. 'I assume that you have plan already. Whatever you need from me or my people, it is yours. Now, tell me what you plan.' he chuckles when you smile to him... yes, it is boy that you know and love.

It takes sometime, but you tell him what you plan. He quickly gets what you mean and send orders to his best free men around. His people will be ready to join teams as soon as you will get others to work. You also ask him from some informations and he nods, giving you short report about any findings in city, but sadly, it isn't anything that could lead you to anchors, at least not at first. However, some informations are interesting. Apparently, some people asked about magical reagents that could be used as part of anchors. You quickly memorize their names and descriptions... but he have other kind of information for you...

'Weaver...' he looks at you for a while. 'Hirine was here, she was asking about you. Month ago.' you almost jump out of chair, but he hold his hands, stoping you from talking. 'I know, you want to know everything, but I can't say you much. She asked me about you, if and when you was here and so... I couldn't give her anything so she get away. I don't know where and why so sudden, but I can assure you, she is traveling with group of friends and so far, she is safe.'

You nods and thanks him, with relief... so it was her, after all. Damn, only one month. Damn month! But it isn't time to think about that. You have work to do. You thanks Alexander for informations and rise from your chair. Both of you don't have more time then that. This time, he don't says 'Goodbye.', but "Good luck.'

You quickly remind Natrila of that she should go to Avian and wait for any updates about teams. Falr will send someone to them if you manage to convince Wizards to help, but you don't think it will be a problem.

***

You rush between people on streets, to get into Wizard Ward. You don't have time, you must have ready teams before this day will finish... your plan must be perfect. It take only 20 minutes for you to get into Great Wizard tower with Falr, but not without almost coughing out your lungs. You get inside, as Falr only shows his badge... damn it, those wizards must be damn rich. Crystal windows, golems guards and luxury exceeding most of mansion in Lords Ward... huh. You get on second floor, as young mage guide you to office of Great Wizard.

You are treated more like standard guest, however, as you don't meet Great Wizard himself, but only his second in command - woman, calling herself Xades. She tries to calm you, saying that Great Wizard have some business to do, but it don't work too well... damn it! You wanted to meet him in person, to at least examine him during talk, but instead, you have some... Gods know who... but you try your best. You don't give every detail of your plan, but only things you think wizards should know. After a while, she nods and tells you she will send someone to help your teams. However, when you ask for informations, you get only simple 'we told Professor Castor everything we knew'. Damn those bastards. You storm out of tower, angry. But well, you succeed, after all. Wizards will help you. Falr quickly get your orders and disappears between streets. Right, it is time for your own work...

You quickly move to Drunk Ward, to ask Castor about those plans of old tunnels under Drunk and to send information to Avian and Natrila about support and with order to search North Ward. You get there fast enough and without any problems, you meet with Castor.

'You must see this, Weaver.' he shows you plans of flooded tunnels. 'You was right about that thing. There is big sewers room under portal itself, but it is supposed to be closed for almost hundred years.'

'So you think one of anchors may be there?' you look at plans, searching any way to get into it, but all of them are either ruined or flooded.

'I don't think so. I know it. It may not be active one, but if we will find one, we may found others. I suggest gather one of your planed teams and send one there.'

'Don't worry, I will take care of this myself, tomorrow. For now, I have some leads about someone that bought some more magical reagents that could be used in anchors.' he looks at you, surpised when you finish.

'Huh. Well, do what you must do, just be careful. We can't afford to lose this battle... after all those damn savages can't be better then me.' Castor/Varag chuckles as he walks away, to get more informations or maybe do more of his work. You also send message to ready your first team and search North Ward while you will attend to your job... What could go wrong?

***

You slowly go to one of shops that were supposed to be visited by people you search. It took some time to finally find it in Wizard Ward, as almost every building contain at least two those shops... damn it. Even people around don't know where to find some of them. It was one of those kinds. You slowly ready yourself to get it and get to work when...

And then, you heard explosion that almost send you flying when ground shakes. You fall on the ground, as many people around you. Wizards try to mantain some kind of shields aroud them, scared. You see how field at the end of Wizard Ward blinks and shines when shockwave hits into it... Gods protect us. What was that? You see huge pile of smoke on north side on town... damn it. It may be only one thing... you rush to North Ward, but you see something weird in meantime... Great Wizard tower suddenly surrounds itself with some field. Huh, maybe they try to protect Council member?

You get to North Ward pretty fast, as everywhere around chaos take it's toll. It happend pretty close to border with Wizard. Damn it, it was powerful explosion - you see many wounded and dead around... and big hole in middle of bunch of houses. You try to find anyone you know, as suddenly you bump into Avian and Natrila, wounded and dirty, but alive.

'What the hells happend there, for Gods sake.' you get closer to them, surrounded by Guards and memebers of their team... at least what left of it. They scream commands, while more and more guard squads get to ward.

'We found one of those damn anchors, that happend. And some fucking demons with it. They saw us and attacked from house, closed entire street inside some of field. We fough back and get inside of this house and... eh, some of wizards attacked with bunch of magical... arrows? Gods know what, but anyway... well, one of those demons shielded himself and those things hit that anchor instead. It began to crack and shine as mad so we ordered to get out of there... not everybody managed to do it, but most did. Demons are dead or dying. I don't think it was that active one, but we get one of those.' Avian curses as he stop to touch touch his wounded hand. 'Fucking shit!'

You look around, trying to find anyone or anything that could give you anything else then that what you already know, but you found on nothing. As suddenly, something hits your mind and you heard Castor voice in your head. He sounds painful.

'Weaver, listen. I use demonic magic to contact you as your primitive magic can't even create good way to contact people on distance. I don't what did you do, but I assume it was one of anchors. Good job, but I have bad news... They were about to activate anchors, main one. It must be set... We have kind of problem now. Portal will open in next... Three hours, when dusk will come... That was good news. Second good news - I can detect main anchor now... And now bad news. It is in middle of Wizard, inside of Great Wizard tower. That one that just maintained shield powerful enough to make us feel it even there. Wizards went into fucking battle there, there must be some of them working with demons... So you were right. We kind of try to stop them, but we don't even know who are working with with us. If we don't get ready... Or get rid of that anchor in middle of magical tower fortress, we are as well as dead. Castor out... And no, you can't respond.

Well, shit.

You must act fast now. What will you do?

This choice is all yours... Make a plan. I can give you some tips or options if you really want, but I can't give you straightforward answers. You can try to go around and gather forces, try to contact Council, get to Castor or find Regreh. Those aren't all options.

Yes, during this chapter more then two rolls happened. You gained some reputation among characters, mostly your companions (Regreh was only one that dropped, but that is because of Castor.

Risk of opening portal so fast wasn't preplanned, but they had lucky rolls. In meanwhile, they managed to prepare and get ready for another try to stabilize portal and Castor think they may succeeded. During your voting. I will roll for situation in town, as things can go south pretty fast. Next updates may be a bit shorter in meaning of text and time in game itself.

Avian and Natrila and their squad were lucky as fuck with their rolls. They losg some of their people and are wounded, but they live and are ready for your orders.

Oh and you succeeded with will roll. If you would fail it... Well, you could go somewhere and suck more people. Yeah, I didn't warned you about risk of this, but for important reason - your character never devoured so much energy in so short time. Welcome in life of life force vampire.

Just got there. It is hopeless. We are up against SPAAAAACE Rance. Might as well start to beautify ourselves in hopes to become the next Empress. :M

Anyway, the next parts should go together IMO.

How dare you compare Emperor to Rance?!

Everybody know that Rance would never allow anyone else to touch his woman. NEVER. :smug:

Yep, I know, this is why I deleted thrid post. Will finish update tomorrow... it would be there today if I wouldn't be forced to help family with Christmas preparations and... uh. Underrail. Blame Styg for so awesome game! :argh:

This one should be fairly easy. An anchor is not supposed to be moved. A tower is a structure that is less stable by design. Violating the integrity of the tower and making it crash or even lean to a side would make the anchor move, right? In about 2 minutes after that there will be precious little left of the tower and its defenders.

So the question is how to destroy or damage it (or its foundation, which should be less defended - can't we dig under the tower with enough explosives?). Since it's in the northern part of the city, there should be a lot of forces stationed in Thief and Circle wards to take care of the problem with a bit of siege weaponry. And the Dwarf Ward is nearby, so if we need explosion specialists, that's an option. Regreh is supposed to make contacts there today... is he? I guess if they don't want to see a demonic invasion, they would mobilize quickly.

If there it another tower close to it we might try collapsing it in a way that makes it hit the Great Wizard's on the way down. Or load it with explosives and then collapse it. The collateral damage will be high, there is no point in trying to be subtle - if we go for the destruction of the anchor, everything in the vicinity will go boom.

Should be a good time to rty our rings out and check the tower and its barrier for any exploitable weaknesses.

Oh, yes, destroying tower will solve thing, but doing that in three hours can be a problem. Your main obstacle is field surrounding Tower. You don't know how powerful it is, how many wizards allied with demons are inside and how many of them act as 'protectors' around.

Castor report suggested that they have no way of telling who is who, so they probably are dealing with it around, Regreh should be doing something in Dwarf, but you don't know where and you don't know what is happening in other parts of city. Chaos may be your main enemy in this battle. And, well... Betrayal of Council member (if Great Wizard really did that) may cause paranoia and even more chaos. Getting enough explosives powerful enough to fuck up tower and field (if your plan with destroying it with another tower fail) may also be a problem. Who knows.

That's the beauty of it. We don't need to destroy it, we only need to damage it. Or rather, damage the foundation.

Presumably, the field is designed to protect the tower against the direct attacks (which is what the others are trying to do), but can it protect it from an indirect one?

My preferred option is to create a fissure in the ground and then use whatever explosives available to expand the fissure towards the tower. Target the ground it is standing on, not the tower itself. If we make it lean just a bit, our job will be finished by the anchor.

The bonus is that an indirect attack is usually not something one expects and that the field may not be designed to resist that. How do you make a field protect a building from an earthquake, anyway?

Presumably, we will need the Council's cooperation for this. I'd use Natrila to contact Alex and have him sort it out with the Council, or act alone if that's what it takes. I'd sent Avian or Falr to the Dwarf ward and warn them of what happened and what we require of them (explosives or anything that makes the earth rock) - they are not compromised, and they are one of the most interested in resolving this thing.

As for the chaos... order the evacuation of the Wizard Ward. Any wizard who is still there at Ground Zero after half an hour is considered an enemy and is subject to termination. That should solve the problem quite decisively. The wizards don't have the field to protect them.

Personally, I'd go to the Ward and take a look at the situation with our rings on. See if we can sort it out using their properties - who is helping whom. See if there is any weakness to the field, if there is some way to attack the tower that it doesn't protect from. See if there aren't some tunnels under the tower - if there are, our job is half-done, as collapsing the tunnels would damage the foundation.

All that while our agents/contacts try to pour resources we might need into the Ward.

Right, let's read it.

Well, you don't know much about magic fields and about how I may work with powerful explosion next to it. Or under it. Maybe some wizard could help you with this.

About earthquake protection - you know about dwarf machines stabilising buildings from those, but you don't know if they have one in tower and how it may work if there is one inside so your plan may work in that aspect. However, if they see any explosives around they may want to stop you. You know nothing about possible security system of ward/tower but it is safe to assume that those exist.

Other parts of plan - nothing to say about those, for now. Unless you have some questions.

Oh, remember that you have one full squad that will probably listen to your orders. There are some wizard in it.

Nevill - may you write same sort of plan post like you did before, if you have clear plan? It would make my job easier.

Also, mind you tagging people? I'm on phone and I can't do it right now.

Tagging people - sure. Kz3r0 , Jester , asxetos - any input?

I don't have a clear plan, just mulling the possibilities over.

Who among the dwarves would know about any stabilizers that may be used in the tower and if there is a way to bypass them? Is there a profession corresponding to it?

Either older miners or mechanics specialised in mining machinery. Regreh probably could find someone that know about those mind of machines without much problems, but first you must find him. Or try to find someone like this yourself.

About anyone that may know if there is one of those in tower - if you find someone that know about importing any kind of those or some other way they could get one... But if Great Wizard get one and he didn't wanted to share that fact with others you probably don't find anyone. You can try to dig. But I can't promise results. Remember - time.

Wait, is the anchor in the tower considered active? Is an explosion of an active anchor worse that what we've seen in the North Ward?

Is turning off the main anchor the only way of closing off the portal, or can it be delayed by attacking the secondary anchor under the portal?

According to that what Castor said - if it will be connected to working portal (and by that work as active energy point) - probably much more powerful. Still delayed, though.

Like Castor said before - finding another anchor and connecting it to portal, then trying to manipulate with connection may delay it a bit and make it weaker for some time, but to close portal you need either destroy main anchor or go into portal and deal with thing that connect it there. Second option is one way trip. Probably.

Well, of you blew up anchor under portal it will take some time for them to make terrain... Comfortable enough to send forces through it.

And Castor detected anchor inside of tower, so it must be activated.

I didnt think Weaver would go on a rampage on the prisoners when i voted for it. I just thought they would bring more for us so we could get the extra energy without sucking them dry. Anyways, it was a cool scene :)

- Can an anchor be diffused or is the explosion unavoidable if we move/damage it?
- Anchor in the sewers beneath portal (Stabilizer?). Is it flooded? Can we access it?
- We were just outside the shop that sold anchor reagents to someone and we didnt take a moment to enter and ask after the explosion? I thought Weaver could keep a cool head in a situation like this.

- We were just outside the shop that sold anchor reagents to someone and we didnt take a moment to enter and ask after the explosion? I thought Weaver could keep a cool head in a situation like this.
To get soul points (check thread, I remember that I already gave some information about those. That are those points that unlock more soulless abilities) you must suck them dry. Otherwise, eating more people then two would be just a waste. I remember that C option won in that matter and there was word about that it will be lethal.

Yes, it can. If Castor will have access to it, he probably will be able to do it. But access... Uh. It may be a problem.

Well... tunnels are supposed to be flooded, but it would rather be impractical to have anchor that can't be moved at any cost underwater. Probably demons found some way to get to that room and you may be able to find it too... Or make your own door. It isn't deep underground.

Well, she isn't hothead, but there are priorities. When something close to you explodes and you know that it could be your squad... Well, it changes those priorities.

There was a tie. :M

But it's not like there are complaints, so all is fine.
