Tactics. Fite me irl.

Best story, best combat, best characters. Main series is full of plot-faggotry and (usually) nothing else.

I have not played IX, and XII onwards.

Gameboy? Are you talking about the GBA or the O.G green Gameboy/ the Game Boy Color?

If it's the latter, you might've been playing a Secret of Mana or SaGa game (Final Fantasy Adventure or Final Fantasy Legend respectively). If it's the former, well, it was probably IV, V or VI.

I love the S/NES games to death, but anyone who'd list a title before V is letting their nostalgia do the talking.

I-IV are important milestones in the history of the series (and of gaming as a medium), but V is the first complete package that has narrative merit beyond its place in history. IV comes close, but ultimately its scripting and its pacing were too constrained for it to properly unfurl itself.

As for the best, I can't really say. I haven't played anything past the first 4 in eons, and I feel like my ranking would be radically different from what it was years ago. Older and wiser and all that, now.

6 was the best of the numbered for me.
But really, this doesn't include tactics, which is fine because I consider it a spin off.
Personally, 6 is just a great game overall. Don't get me wrong tho. 5 really brought the job system to focus, and was instrumental in allowing for a TON of creativity with charactes.
Which I loved. I think that's one of the reasons Tactics was so awesome for me.
But honestly, 6 was great. The first third of the game is railroaded, yeah.

But fuck me is the last two-thirds of the game open in terms of what you can and can't do. I love that.
Hell, the moment you get the airship you can go and fight Kefka if you want. Beat the bad guy without finding the rest of your party, just assuming they all died?
Hell yeah.

And I really liked the artwork. That was what made me first notice Final Fantasy 6 in the first place (or as I remember it FF3). I was reading through a Nintendo Power magazine, and saw the artwork for the game. I was immediately intrigued, and the magazine was running a 3 issue special on the game in it's entirety. I read the first section, went to my mom, and said "I'd like this game for Christmas please." After reading the entire special, which was in September, I promptly forgot about the game.
Then Christmas came. And I saw it with it's somewhat nondescript box art and poster inside, and was like 'huh. Weird.' I didn't play it at first. Then, maybe in Feb or March I started to.
For the first week, I played the game for about 3 to 4 hours a day, before realizing I had to save. Someone showed me that.
After that, I was a machine. I played the game from 1994 on for about 3 years. Then FF7 came out.
I played that game. Beat it a few times. Put it away. It didn't feel the same, something was different, off about it.
I was enthusiastic about the game at first, thinking it was great. Then, I dunno. I was spoiled on FF6 I guess.

Then a friend introduced me to Tactics. It was 3 all over again. I played that INTO college, and on occasion afterwards for a while. Stopped playing FF's for a bit.
Then war of the lion came out, and me and a friend got a PSP and hooked it up to his 60 inch screen TV just to play it. Had a BLAST with it.

But beyond that, I haven't really touched the final fantasy games with any real interest. When they got into the voice acting schtick I REALLY lost interest. All the characters sounded like fags. The main heroes were high pitched whiny pussies with cracking voices.
Don't get me wrong. I sometimes have been accused of sounding like the guy who slings verbal abuse at wannabe pornstars on facialabuse. But fuck me, when I want to, I sound way more mean than these guys, and I'm like a level 3 commoner.

So, in the end, FF6 was it for me. Partly because of the story, partly because of graphics, art, and music, partly because of gameplay. Those pieces wrapped together into a great whole, an intriguing game world that kept me hooked.

I almost was afraid to enter this thread because of the possibility that FF VI wasn't the fav. FF of the community. Justice prevails tho....

Especially with the fan mod Brave New World, FF VI is the complete package.

Of those I played,

FFX had by far the best combat.
I really like FFX-2 scenario design, even if the plot isn't stellar. There's an insane amount of branching and optional content, If you just rush through the primary missions, you'd at best see only about 15% of the game.

I don't really get the love for FFXII, the story's an absolute mess, and I find the combat annoying, mostly because when spells like cura are cast, it takes a good 10 seconds to affect everyone that was in its range (which means my party members die a lot).

I have a similar grievance with FFX-2's combat system, when enemies use skills your party members are basically frozen in place, but the ATB gauge keeps charging so the other enemies will still use regular attacks or begin charging their skills. While you might've survived one fire spell while your white mage was frozen in place, you couldn't account for the 4 or so regular attacks other enemies did as fire was cast on your group.
This is incredibly annoying against bosses like Angra Mainyu.

It also doesn't account for travel times, particularly for melee classes, especially ones like trainer because the girls never ever move into a more optimal position for their pets, so they might take a good 10 seconds or so to even reach their target to deliver the skills, and in the meantime the monsters might pull off 2 or 3 attacks/skills each.
There is one quirk I really liked about FFX-2 combat system, whenever you finished an encounter, any skills your girls were charging complete immediately, so your white mage could get an extra 'Pray' in so save you some MP.

Consider giving 9 a try. It could be king if only the gameplay was a little better and not so fucking slow. So 6 or 7 is probably better as a result, but if you liked the unique charm of 6 you should like 9.

Never saw Brave New World. What's that?

A hardcore mod for FF6 used via an emulator. I'm yet to give it a try myself but one of these days...

Read about it and dl it here: http://www.insanedifficulty.com/board/index.php?/files/file/66-final-fantasy-vi-brave-new-world/

I'm currently beta testing the latest version which features alot of nice improvements.

Summed up, BNW pretty much addresses the one area FF VI is weak in, (combat) and makes the game deeper, providing actual unique builds using Esper growth and a revamped stat system where the speed and stamina stats actually count for something now. It turns FF VI from an excellent FF game into an all around excellent rpg.

Sounds potentially interesting. Never did see why FF6 always wins these things myself; it was the first one I played but it really has nothing going for it that FF5 didn't do better, and the combat was terrible.

The combat is a bit shit, and the game doesn't do itself any favours with areas like the cultist tower highlighting how bad the combat is, but the main draw is the story, setting, characters etc which all beat FF5, cool though Faris was. I still can't really get much out of FF5's story despite playing fully through two different translations.

FF6 has a pretty godlike soundtrack too.

Ultra rare. Only had it done a few times. First one I saw was Cyan's, then Celes. A few others at most, Setzer's included.
But it was cool as hell when it happened.
I think that this was the first use of limit break as well.

Were you trying to see them? Because the conditions for triggering them (use the fight command while at critical health) are really awkward. Like, why would you attack while that weak instead of healing? Not to mention even if you do want to attack, most characters are better off using magic or their unique skill rather than the normal fight command.

tactics was the only good one in the series with a decent story and some non retarded characters n fine combat

rest of the games were too fking retarded for me when i was a kid, especially 7 and 8 and 9, never played past 9, thought those 3 were shit anyways and mostly designed for idiots

6 was a little bit less retarded

1/2/3/4/5 were all shit

i actually think the radiation affected the brains of the japanese cos some of the shit they come up with in their anime/games is so fucked lol, or maybe it's the mercury poison from dolphin meat who knows

I was just thinking about starting a thread, "When did you get sick of Final Fantasy?", but this will do.

I voted for VI without question, I had the greatest time with it and have the strongest memories of it. Of course it was the first FF I played, so that may be a factor. But I really think the writing had the greatest charm, and the structure was really interesting, the way it started with one protagonist, accumulated more characters, then split the party and had you follow individual stories, then brought them back together; and then the second act started with a different character and the original protagonist was lost. That changed the way I thought about RPGs.

I greatly enjoyed V as well, and played it all the way through. The systems were great, but the writing was clearly a "previous attempt" compared to VI.

VII was fun, played it to the end. I liked the characters, the writing was enjoyable, good times. I don't remember most of it now.

Then VIII came out, with its shiny clean setting and characters that were all "just a bunch of normal doods hanging out at school" with realistic proportions, ugly haircuts, and no charisma. I still thought FF was god at this point, so I plowed into the game with great energy, but it just drained out of me. I didn't care about these characters, the world was beautiful with no darkness to push against, I couldn't feel any conflict or motivation.

At the other end, I went back and tried IV as well, but it went too far the other way, being ugly and clunky, with characters that were just a handful of pixels that all looked alike. Couldn't stay motivated with that one either.

So I guess for me VI is the peak, which falls away a bit to either side with V and VII, then drops away steeply with IV and VIII. Never played any of the others after that.

Probably had the best time with VI and VII. Liked XII, as well. X had a promising combat system but, I'm sorry, Tidus is too huge of a fag.

People seem to really like IX and X-2 on the Codex, so I'll have to give them another look sometime.

I've played every Final Fantasy game until 12, and the objectively correct answer is
Chrono Trigger
but 6 is the best of the poll options.

I'm sticking to FVIII being the best one :D Played it start to finish 5 (maybe 6?) times.

But I am a sucker for great soundtracks, and like it or not, FVIII has the best one.

After that FFVI ;)
