Giants: Citizen Kabuto still holds today.
Tried it some time ago, it bored me. It's completely empty.
A big part of its charm comes from the humour and writing, and that kind of stuff doesn't really age. It looks good too. The actual gameplay was never amazing in itself.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto was one of those unique and kind of weird games that was easy to overlook in 2000 with so many other good games being released, and if anything, it might be easier to really appreciate it nowadays.

Some time ago I tried to replay the first Command and Conquer and Red Alert games, and it was rather dull. The objectives were too simple, the gameplay too slow, the maps really boring... RA2 is truly dynamic, on the other hand, and still holds up to this day. Generals is still the pinnacle.
Other than that I can't remember games that felt "too weird" or "too outdated" coming at them from 2016.

2. Civilization. Some people hail it as classic, but cheating AI and pikemen killing bombers were and are unacceptable. I wasted lot of time on this game back then that i regret.

The shit AI is what does it for me.

Expanding and making a nice sized empire only to realize each AI has only made less then a dozen cities and can barely defend themselves ruined too many games until I deliberately restricted myself to only making roughly the same number of cities they did. Even then the AI barely knew how to fight.

Yeah, but my point is that at some point my brain just said: "Yep...we like these grafix. We're good", and it stayed that way permanently. For example, I still think Everquest looks great. Same for UO..

Same here. I found it odd that Mount and Blade's graphics were criticized first going into it because I was so used to EQs.

With EQ in mind, I think it goes to show that graphics age badly mainly when they stop being appealing, but bad ones with personality remain good and even beloved. EQ's original models had charm, something the later ones lacked and remain to this day unappealing and devoid of character.

I still play EQ today, with old models on.

A lot of the games from 95-05 are like that for me. I can objectively say the graphics are bad, but I don't care, they're good enough and retain a unique feel that comes from that era and warms my heart. Maybe that's all nostalgia from growing up playing such games, but I don't feel the same warm sense from games before that era, despite being equally beloved.

Anachronox is a good example of that too, though I never played it back in the day.

Now, one game from that era that looks horrible that I recently treid playing again is Steel Reign for Playstation. After the lovely 90s cheese opening you start the game and are assaulted by the visuals and how they act when in motion.

Another that has aged badly graphics wise and control wise, is the original Armoured Core. It was a game put on the PSX that really needs to be played with a keyboard and mouse.
I'd say Final Fantasy VII (if we consider also console games) :M

I don't see it. FFVIIs sprites remained cartoonish enough for me not to mind. OTOH, FFVIIIs went for realism and are badly textured. Even back in the day I never liked the textures and the models only stood out after years of playing older FFs.

Mechwarrior 2s slide walking was offputting even at the time.

Despite that the games still damn fun and makes up for the bland visuals.

Even then the hallmark of the Playerstation 1 era Final Fantasys are their gorgeous backgrounds, of which FFVII and FFIX stand out.

They are simple and the AI isn't aggressive enough, but I still find the gameplay enjoyable and the graphics are timeless.

RA2 I could never get, but it still looks nice. The one C&C that never looked good to me and only gets worse is Tiberium Sun.

Alone in the Dark -- loved it when it came out, best game there was for Panasonic 3DO which was like throwing $350 down the toilet. Tried replaying a few months ago, mindblowingly clunky. Makes Resident Evil tank controls seem fluid.

Out of this World/Another World -- found it amazing back in the day mostly due to the visual style and cinematic feel, nothing else like it aside from Flashback. Playing it now, it's just a slog through trial and error hell.

Commandos series -- fuck off with memorizing a thousand hotkeys. Adolescent patience, it wasn't a big deal then. Adulthood, nothing but frustration. idonthavetimeforthiscrap.

tl;dr games don't age badly, we do.

This post just hurtz my eyez... I'm still finding these among the best. And Commandos 1 is fukken easy, I can finish it with my eyes closed as I did it thousand times.

To the thread:

Turok / Turok 2 / Goldeneye 64 - they're not as good as I used to think, mostly due to console controls, they were the harbringers of fps genre decline.

Die By the Sword - again, controls aged horribly, it's unplayable now.

American Mcgee's Alice / Rune - combat is still fine but AWFUL 3d platforming is piece of shit, platforming thing should stay in 2D and these ones should be 100% combat focused gaemz.

Almost all Amiga exclusive platform games - they were nice tech-demos but as well felt like being deigned not by gamers... average NES game destroys them easily, exception - Ruff'n'Tumble.

Giants looked amazing back then. Might have been the best looking game at that time. You can still play it today (I replayed it a few years back) but some enemies and ground textures close up do look horrible. Skyboxes and water are still fine though.

Krazy ivan. When i first played it as a kid looong time ago it was atmospheric as hell, but when i recently replayed it it was eh.
