I don't know what the Key of the Ancients is for, but Gardens of Midnight is right outside Crowl.

The value of delayed-release starting bonuses:

Key of the Ancients: Unlocks a 4-level dungeon with the best weapons and some of the best armor in the game, as well as being the easiest place to grind levels . You eventually get a copy normally, but this lets you gain access before facing what might be the most difficult dungeon in the game. Slightly useful.

Moravia Key: Access to the interior of Moravia. Useless because by the time you can get to the outside of Moravia, you can also get to the inside.

Xenoform Passcard: Based on the description, it unlocks a door in the final dungeon which you can get access to anyway with high lockpicking. Seems useless.

Skull of Hathor Sogg: Gives access to a dungeon containing some high-level loot, a few good weapons, five arcana spellbooks, and fountains that raise three skills to +20. Is the only way to access this dungeon.

LAND OF THE FREE & HOME OF THE BRAVE
"Wilderness" / Gardens of Midknight:
  • Key of the Ancients

Can you get to this area without it?

Yes, which means this is sort of the puniest start of the game, not much except a raw start in the middle of nowhere with almost no help, just dropped into Gardens of Midnight with toothpick and bubble gum.
