Which one should I play? I've seen some people here say the original one is better if you just mod the resolution.

The original as in "the original" is kinda annoying to play, most people opt to using easyTuTu or BGT to play on BG2's updated IE.

But if you go for the vanilla experience just install baldurdash fixes and maybe unfinished business since it's not like you'll ever replay BG1. High Resolution support for BG1 is p. shitty, as nobody really bothers working on it because why the hell are you playing vanilla BG1?

I did the setup for the originals Baldur's Gate but just go with the enhanced edition. Its way more convenient. Unless you want to install a lot of mods and even then the game might not run well on a modern machine.

Enhanced Edition for BG2 is decent, though not decent enough to justify the 22e price tag. EE for the first game is worthless crap.

Does anyone know if the BG2 EE allows mods like SCS2 and Ascension etc?

For ascension, it's not yet finished i think, but it's in the making. There is a list
on baldursgate.com
about mod compatibility for the EE.

Personally, i don't see why i should bother with the EE. Original games have plenty of mods, many bug-tested for years, and a well-working BGT installation where i can play through all 2 1/2 BG games in "one run" with loads of different mods tops the EE by miles imho.

The EE versions include important additions such as gay party members, something Bioware simply couldn't put into the game before due to the technical limitations of the era.

If you choose BGT or any kind of modded original BG then don't use mods that change too much of the game balance or mechanics (so skip SCS for example). These are for advanced players and for the first playthrough you should play it as intended by the designers anyway.
BGT (Baldurs Gate Trilogy) is nice because it enables you to use convenient stuff added by BG2 like TAB for highlighting items/containers on the screen. Baldurs Gate 2 is required for that mega-mod though (shouldn't be a problem, it's one of the greatest games ever released so everyone should have it anyway). Oh and you need Throne of Bhaal too. There's a reason it's called Trilogy. ^^

I recently finished BG1 (original version, no mods, no nothing) - got it running on my Mac with a bit of hassle. I enjoyed it alot, although its more linear than I remember. Still lots of fun.

I friend of mine who played the EE said it was not too great, the new content is kindda buggy and feels out of place (think there is kind of an "arena" etc).

Yeah, I just thought having quicker load/save times and not having to disable hardware accelaration would be convenient.

The biggest advantage for me is that load times are now pretty much instant in the Enhanced Edition. A few of the interface improvements are also nice to have. But, aside from that, unless you really want the new companions and locations (I'd advise not), it's not worth it unless you are mod-phobic. I'm sticking with the Enhanced Edition just for convenience and because now most mods support it without issue, but at the same time if I hadn't got a copy for free I would never have bought it.

Go with the original either in tutu or BGT. For a first playthrough I wouldn't recommend any other mods (except the fixpack for BG2). The EE is more expensive, buggier, and the additional content is awful.

I still like playing the original (not with BGT, which is very good). I wish they could just figure out the encounter tables BG used. The modding community still has never figured that out.

Can't speak to BG EE but if you don't fuck anything up then BGT shouldn't really have problems

Enhanced edition allows you to play the game in the here and now, without spending your entire weekend installing unsightly, hacky mods.

Don't listen to the autists who tell you Enhanced is somehow horrible. It's the same game, only you can play it without a hassle and you get a few extra, dull companions that you can choose not to recruit.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
^ Pretty much what he said.

I played the game for almost a hundred hours and I didn't experience any bugs. I feel like the UI is much better in the EE versus the original, and the graphics are so much less blurry that you can actually enjoy the beautifully hand drawn maps of BG. The biggest complaint people have in regards to the EE is SJW bullshit. While SJW bullshit is a very valid criticism, I just ignored the shit characters and I didn't have to deal with it at all. For 11 bucks you can get BG 1&2 EE's on Steam rn, it's a steal. Do it before the sale ends.

Fixed it for you.

Am i the only one who thinks the only major drawback from the EE are the new cutscenes? The older ones simply evoked way more atmosphere and were more in style with the game than this lazy comic-style shit.

Hour, tops, to get the base games installed and select mods obtained and installed. 30 minutes if you’ve already got your shit. That said, I did a run through the Trilogy using this mod

EET:
http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=27756
Rid the shitty NPCs:
http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/1135-disable-enhanced-edition-npcs/

And whatever changes beyond the inane NPCs made weren’t noticeable enough to piss off the purist in me.
