The shitiness of melee and the power of ranged weapons makes me think this game should be disqualified from the Fantasy genre, and moved to the post-apocalyptic bin.

I haven't been able to find any good melee weapons for my Duelist. So I decided to get crowned. And what does the game give me? The Long Bow of the Sun. I ain't even mad.

The sad thing is, it's not just a matter of melee being good vs chaff but lame vs bosses and the decent melee monsters; meleeing all those zombies to death means you're missing out on valuable weapon xp for your ranged attacks, or spell xp. Using melee at all actually makes you weaker even when you aren't using it.

I'm really enjoying this game for some reason. Remember how in Planescape:Torment you meet that dude in the Smouldering Corpse bar, who spent so much time wandering the planes his essence bled away and he is transparent. You can become that dude in ADOM with all the corruptions.

I've had terrible luck getting irradiated by chaos traps. But got bitching corruptions out of it. Black eyes (see invisi and +3 perception). Teleportitis (I have teleport control). I accidentally killed a Dwarftown resident and the shopkeeper went hostile. I lured him into the ogre cave and teleported out. Don't really need him for selling things because there are two shop keepers on other levels who give better prices. Going to do the portal quest.

I say you are extremely lucky, becuase vast majority of corruptions are fucking bad and the more you have it goes down the drain.

As someone who meleed Andor Dracon to death I find your lack of faith in melee disturbing. That was back in 1.1.1, though, but I doubt they nerfed that aspect much.

I have also meleed ACW on more than one occasion. True, you have an easier time with an archer, but ADOM is not very balanced (TM). It is even easier with wizards. :balance:

Special missiles of slaying are somewhat rare to waste them on mooks. A good artefact weapon would serve you better in the long run.

Why would you need slaying missiles for mooks? Plain old thrown rocks can do like 30+ damage. Or 150+ on a crit. Throw in an actual ranged weapon artifact and/or some decent ammo, you may as well be fucking god. Only thing you'd arguably need melee for is dopplegangers, but it's not like you couldn't just use a wand on them instead.

At least they (ever so slightly) balanced ranged and casting by nerfing the double shield setup into the ground. That used to be hilariously effective.

I tried to do the Dark Forge. But it took so long to kill that first golem I picked up corruptions and had to use a blessed scroll of CR so I just left.

But I realized I got lucky with getting all the necessary special equipment and did the fire tower @ lvl 19 Duelist.

Fireproof blanket.
Ring of Ice.
Elemental Gauntlets.
Intrinsic fire resistance from the fire bug.
Ring of regeneration.
Potion of CR.
All blessed.

Cursed potion of invisi.

I had the ring of regeneration equipped going through the tower and then switched to that anti-confusion + learning ring after the wyrm confused me.

Fire giant kings were a huge pain, even when I shot them with my 14 quarrels of giant slaying. Fire demons were also nasty, because the very first corruption I got and still have is the corrupting touch so I heal chaos creatures when I hit them unless I 1-shot them. I would knock their health down with arrows and then stab. I also got the hate the sun corruption on the very first level of the tower, but I have the phial so it's no biggie.

Dug to the wyrm, the room was infested with fire demons and elementals. The Wyrm was already injured for some reason, and I managed to hit it with my magic missile wand so it panicked ran off and healed to full health. Cleared out enough guards for the wyrm to come out and chase me around. Blinded it with the cursed invisi potion, shot it up with some blessed arrows of 1d6 wrecking. No effect. Blindness wore off fast. Tried throwing potion of raw mana no effect. Tried throwing the phial. No effect, and the wyrm picked it up.

The wyrm was trying to confuse me and I was dodging all his bolts (100 alertness 127 speed). At this point I was retreating back to its layer and an elemental was flanking me that I was ignoring. I remembered the blessed potion of CR and threw it. Took away most of wyrm's health. Wyrm heals. Oh shi gotta go in for the melee finisher before it heals completely. I run up and stab it, it decides to fight to the death and goes berserk. I pull back to the elemental and throw a potion of confusion (no effect). The wyrm comes up I poison it with a wand but it nails me from 256 hp down to 18. I pray to full health and just melee it once or twice, it panics and runs. Kill the elemental, chase down the wyrm and finish it. Managed to drag it's corpse all the way to the druid and get a potion of cr out of it.

The lesson is never melee anything dangerous unless at full health.

I shot them

Well there's your problem. Duelists are the only class to get massive penalties for ranged attacks, iirc.

And yeah, Duelists and Tremendous blows are the way to go for melee. Though for the duelists it's more out of necessity than anything else. Tremendous blows lets you get around the whole being counter berserked to death thing by one shotting enemies.

I'd still never melee any of the bosses and expect to live though. I've been killed from full health plenty of times.

I thought the main point of practicing melee in this game is with an orcish spear helpfully dropped in the hills by one of the roving orc bands, because spears have the best DV modifiers if trained (you are also more likely to train shield in the process).

Also some artifact weapons, like the Vanquisher, are pretty solid, and the Thief also gets a nice heir gift that's like a sturdier phase dagger.

Gnome barbarians under Candle are also a nice combo to roll, IMHO, just for that heir gift (or even Hurthlings, maybe).

What is tremendous blows and how do I get it? My char is a gray elf.

Also is it possible for my duelist to learn frost bolt @lvl 20, 23 learning, 24 will power, 16 mana, 100 concentration, 100 literacy? Or am I gonna kill myself?

As far as shooting things I have the bow of Sun's messenger (my crowning gift). I use blessed arrows and it absolutely dominates undead @ 30 dex. I have yet to encounter an undead creature that I didn't 1-shot.

It's a barbarian ability where you spend more energy at a time in order to deliver a really powerful blow to an enemy. It can kill him right away, but be aware that you'll attract free hits from opponents (due to more energy spending). I think the shortcut for special abilities is Ctrl+x.

I think he was implying that only Duelists (because duh) and Barbarians (because Tremendous Blow) have viable melee options.

Ah, artifact bow would make up for the massive lack of skill levels. Duelists require 10x as much to improve ranged weapon skills, so most classes are that strong with plain +0 bows (discounting the free crits on undead of course.) Mind you, undead tend to be mostly weaklings early on. Though if you OHKO'd the mummy lord that is rather impressive damage. Ranged crits OP.

Should be fine to try learning the spell if you've maxed out literacy and conc. The penalties for failure to learn spells are pretty minor in ADOM. Just read it in dwarftown or some other safe location, and make sure the book is blessed beforehand.

I don't think I had my artifact bow against the mummy lord so maybe I wouldn't have been able to 1-shot him. I just spammed my blessed fireball wand.

I have a question about grues.

Apparently you can instantly die (eaten by grue) when you are doomed and entering a dark area. But there are actual grue enemies that you can fight. My question is will the actual grues insta-kill me in the dark? And when a doomed player gets "eaten by grue", does the game simply kill them or does it actually spawn a grue enemy in the dark that then eats the player?

I tried learning Ice Bolt but the book burned up. But then I remembered that I had a wand of wonder with no charges so I blessed a mana potion and bought some booze potions and spammed it until I had 10 castings of icebolt. Then I went and 1-shot the skeleton king with my bow @ lvl 21.

I went back to ASCII. :E Seeing the whole map is just better.

Also, my first ultra lawfull ending! Whupee! In the end it wasn't that much harder from a normal victory. Only annyoing thing was getting to C alignment and staying there for the duration of the Gaab'Baays quests. Had to slaughter everyone at the High Mountain village (and old barbarian) just for the aligment drop.

My first proper try at ULE as well. I guess the wizards really are that OP. :P

As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents

 were very hard.
As a kid you often watched the adult adventurers preparing for new
exciting journeys. They sparked your imagination.
As a young adult you left your home because of trouble with your

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
                              His further life:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

After slaying Andor Drakon and dispersing his malevolent energies the
pillars of Order appear before you. All the forces of Order seem to be
united behind them. You are lifted to the status of an Avatar of Order and
the tales of your deeds are spread all over Ancardia.

Your deeds are recounted at camp fires and interpreted by philosophers and
priests alike. The common man looks up to you and you slowly start to be
revered as a minor power of Order. After a few millennia have passed you are
raised to the position of a demigod to guard and protect Ancardia from the
forces of Chaos and Balance forever.

Under your guidance Ancardia becomes an orderly and organized world without
striking changes. Peaceful order (and boredom?) spreads and the world enters
an era of peace and tranquility never again leaving it.

Last major version ever of ADOM released: http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2018/01/adom-306-released-to-general-public.html

ADOM 3.0.6 released to the general public!

Hi everyone!

We start the new year with getting things out of the way: ADOM 3.0.6 now is available as a free download to the general public:
With this release our crowdfunding campaign comes full circle: We are officially done!

From now on we will focus our development effort on Ultimate ADOM and run ADOM in a kind of support mode (which means: it gets about 20% of our time for attention to fix bugs and add new features and content). Releases of ADOM will happen on Steam first (because it's technically much easier to do so) and then after a while also on IndieDB (but probably not every release but just the major ones).

If you would like to enjoy all the features of the Deluxe version of ADOM (the one on Steam) you still have a couple of ours left to get the best entry price in our Steam sale (which soon will be over). Utilize it right away!

And now have fun playing!

Why did you feel the need to necro the thread and post about ADOM now when there were much more important updates that you missed?

So you would have something to bitch about.

I don't really give that much of a shit (though I can see how my post could've came across as making people think I give more of a shit than I really do); it just strikes me as somewhat puzzling.

what updates? I'd like to keep informed.

This might not be an entirely serious request as that post was apparently edited, but since 31 January 2016 (the last post before Infinitron's recent post) ADOM has got a veritable motherlode of major updates:
  • The announcement of Ultimate ADOM, which is some kind of MMO-roguelike hybrid (ADOM II/JADE is presumably dead because of this).
  • Addition of the animations to the ADOM tileset.
  • New locations, such as the volcano and the Ice Queen Domain, with requisite new items, monsters, artifacts, and even statuses, therefore fulfilling the ADOM Indiegogo campaign.
  • Addition of a online high score system and a series of weekly challenges.
  • and much more.
