I know everyone hates it, but I really enjoy the Nar Shadda sniper level from JK2. If nothing else it’s a pretty epic troll from the devs, right after giving you the lightsaber. No way a AAA game would have the balls to do that sort of shit in this day and age.

Effect & Cause in Titanfall 2 was pretty good for a gimmick level, although the time travel level in Dishonored 2 was probably better.

i enjoyed the picture quest in oblivion; the one where you enter the painting

Definitely a neat concept and very nice visual differences, all usual complaints about Oblivion aside... Same for some of the Dark Brotherhood stuff.

Not exactly a level but I would add Ending E in Nier Automata, where you have to play a bullet hell shooter against the game's ending credits to unlock it.There are quite a few bullet hell parts in that game so I am not sure if you can even call it a gimmick by that point by I liked destroying the ending credits while that song was playing in the background.

There's a number of gimmicks in the Hitman series that I enjoy (and conversely some that I don't enjoy). In Hitman 2, there's the mission where you don't have positive ID on the target and have to get some help from the handler to proceed. In Hitman 3, a certain mission works on a timetable (guy has a nuke and his ship gets stormed by SWAT), and you can skip the timetable ahead through your actions (e.g. if you get the SWAT member disguise the assault triggers faster; this way you don't have to tediously wait after acquiring the disguise). You can blend in with the SWATs during the assault, you can steal the SWAT sniper rifle, you can disguise as a terrorist, wait for the assault, kill the target and steal the remote for the bomb (as if threatening to detonate it), then walk to the helicopter he demanded, etc. There's the famous one in Hitman 4 where shooting your target while he's on the stage doesn't count as a ballistic kill but an accident as long as you time it with the execution scene, and you can even dress up as an actor to do it.

If you like gimmick levels in Hitman, you ought play Hitman Codename 47. It's an entire game worth of gimmick kills.

I established speedrun world records in that game as well as challenge runs and frankly I don't think it has any interesting gimmicks worth exploring that aren't directly tied to breaking the game with glitches. :)

Hitman speedruns are cool. Didn't think we had any speedrunners here.

The fight against The End in MGS3.

Oh man that guy is simply one of the best bosses in videogames. The amount of ways you can fuck with him, and the feeling of playing hide-and-seek is awesome. To bad about the difficulty though. Like I said in my previous post MGS3 is pretty much a chain of gimmicks that form a pretty great game.

Not just those ones. While do think Oblivion is a shit game it has a lot of very neat quest ideas, their implementation and all aspects of the gameplay was what fucked them up.

FUCK SEWER LEVELS

FUCK ICE LEVELS
You just described Ultima Underworld 2...

You basically have:
Sewer level
Enemy camp
Enemy camp
Ice level
Sewer level
Sewer level
Gimmick level
LSD level
Tomb level

And in between each one, you have to traverse the first sewer level.

Visiting Rich People - Mafia 1 ( stealth mission. If you make it in and out unseen, you can nab a unique car that you won't have access to otherwise )
Happy Birthday - Mafia 1 ( an assassination mission where you start off with no weapons. It boils down to being a more elaborate version of the Turk assassination from the Godfather, set on a steamboat )
Player's Maze - Planescape Torment ( pretty neat puzzle, especially since you don't really expect to find yourself trapped there )
Citadel - Half Life 2

- In one of the Red Alert's mission packs (don't remember it it was in Counterstrike or Aftermatch) there is some crazy mission where units have differents ammo than their regular versions. V2 Rocket Launcher shooting suicidal nukes and shit like that.
- Ant levels in Counterstrike and Dino levels in original C&C.
- Dat mission in SiN when you play as mutated version of Blade.
- Drakengard 1&3 - when ultimate boss of hack'n'slash title is fucking rythm game!
- Cadillacs and Dinosaurs' third level allows to drive through every enemy instead of fighting.

Minefield and Ziggurat in Wiz 4.

That game is one big gimmick.

BTW: Cosmic Cube...
