Nintendo Switch, the only console today making games which are games

Switch is so far a scam, unless you want to play around 5 games.

It will remain so because Nintendo can't support the console well enough, and third party games are available elsewhere, so it's just a waste of my money.

For it to keep a steady success, it needs that every owner buys the major games (this year, Mario Tennis and Smash Bros), and not every game is a Zelda BOTW. Its success so far is hype.

I predict that in some time, if the trend keeps this way, a lot of Switchers will sell their console second-hand and jump to a more worthy platform.

Most people who own a Switch recognise that it's best used as a secondary platform, not your main gaming device.

I bought a Switch last week - here's my short and preliminary review.

To clarify; I have a PS4 Pro and a good gaming laptop. Got interested in the switch because i) some games looked cool (Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Octopath) and ii) I travel around a lot and want something I can play while on the train/plane.

My first impression was that this is a pretty amazing concept that works great in practice. It's so nice to be able to play Zelda on my big tv with a good controller. Then leave the house and play a game of Mario Kart against a friend while sitting in the train. I just love the design of this thing. Some games work great in portable mode (Mario kart, Mario odyssey, hollow knight, Octopath demo), Zelda works but I vastly prefer to play that on a big screen tv.

On the technical specifications, the screen and the battery; it all works fine but it would have been great to see some more higher end performance/components. The screen is ok but I would prefer to pay a bit extra to have a screen with no or thin bezels (more screen real estate) with a more high end image quality. The battery lasts around 3 hours when playing a demanding game, I use a small power bank which adds another 5 hours to that playtime. For me this is more than enough but you can simply add a bigger power bank if you really need to play more than 8 hours. The graphical/processing power is pretty basic compared to even the normal PS 4. I have mixed feelings about this. The Switch provides more evidence that good games are 99% about creativity, gameplay and artstyle -pure graphic porn just adds so little to actual enjoyment of a game. However, playing Zelda I did feel that it could be even more impressive if there was some more power in the Switch - just adding more wildlife, vegetation, NPCs etc.

On the games; I was a bit surprised to notice that Nintendo games are much less declined than Playstation/Xbox games. Sure, Zelda is not a hardcore RPG but at least it's all about the gameplay without too many obvious concessions. I have gotten so sick of watching endless cutscenes/diologues which in the end are mostly poorly written and take you out of the actual game. In contrast, Zelda (but also the Mario games, super smash etc) just throws you in the game with not too much explanation and lets you figure it out along the way. Plus, it is a proper open world, sandbox game which feels much less like a theme park than say Skyrim.

Will not talk about Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart. For me these are just good fun to do on the side, when sitting in the train etc. Also Super Smash I'm really looking forward to to play on the side.

As for other RPGs; Octopath Travellers seems promising from what I played but will reserve judgement on that until its out. Xenoblade Chronicles apparently is good but doesn't appeal to me at all. Dragonquest XI no clue, looks too colorful for me so far.

Right now that's about it - not much else I'm stoked about. Perhaps this MTS 5 game but havent seen anything yet. So yes, the number of actually good games is pretty limited.

To sum up; great concept, great design, some amazing exclusives (but not too many good games overall). Technical specifications and quality of the screen are a bit underwhelming. Going forward I hope Nintendo reiterates on this concept and introduces a Switch ''Pro'' down the road with substantially better specs/hardware.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
If it has 10 good games, it's worth the purchase for me. I can also use it for home brew. Quite easy to break.

I'll say it again:
Zelda, Mario O, Mario+Rabbids, Octopath are owned. Fire Emblem, SMT5, XC2, XC2 expac, Mercenary Saga Chronicles and TWEWY Remix are mine in the future.

Tropical Freeze is definitely worth buying if you didn't own a Wii U (who did?). I'd never touched it before and the levels and music are excellent. I only use the Switch as a handheld and it's a good device to play all those games you'd never bother playing on your desktop (a lot of 2d platformers and small indie games like Golf Story).

Anyone intending to try Arena of Valor on the switch by any chance? It's a MOBA that's super big on Mobile - closed Beta on switch starts on Thursday.

Edit: I applied for the Beta but didn't get a key :(

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
Kind of wish they didn't reintroduce all the characters. I'm happy to play some again like Wolf and it's not like doing the clones costs any major development time, but I'd rather have something new rather than Ice Climbers.

So now I ended up with some spare beta keys for Arena of Valor.

Anyone here wants to give it a try for some good popamole fun?

I'm holding off until Prime 4 and then I'll just get all the games I missed at once. Unless there's a nice Black Friday deal.

Nintendo is cracking down on homebrew and piracy hard right now.

Nintendo is one of the worst offenders when it comes to going after pirate sites.

Considering the success of the NES/SNES classics it's not surprising.

Got myself a RCM jig and busted my Switch wide open this weekend. Retroarch works great. There's now a way to FTP stuff directly into your SD card that's inserted in the console, so no need to keep turning it off and on whenever you want to try something new.

The process isn't 100% retard proof but it's pretty easy if you know how to read. To be on the safe side, make sure to do a full NAND backup through Hekate before doing any high seas stuff. In any case, the worst that can happen is being unable to update firmware, access the eshop or playing online (which is something I never planned to do anyway, especially having to pay for the service). You can update the firmware manually through homebrew anyway.

I've had some crashes with Atmosphere (running installed .NSPs), but none so far using ReiNX. Maybe it's related to how I formatted my microSD (some sort of FAT32/EXFAT shenanigans, I'm not really sure), if it keeps happening I'll have to sort it out.

That kind of effort doesn't seem worth the minimal gain. Besides, some new firmware could always fuck it all up and then you have to tinker again. Money is worth less than my time.

Seems fun as a hobby project though!

I bought it envisioning it as some sort of homebrew/emulator portable kit anyway, the Nintendo games are just icing on the cake. Fuck their pricing, though. Last game I bought was Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, a port of a 4 year old (albeit brilliant) Wii U game for 60 fucking dollars.

But yeah, I agree. I like to tinker with devices and there's potentially a lot of headache. Not for everyone.
