Among people who are familiar with him, David W. Bradley is best known as the brilliant designer who took over Sir-Tech's famed Wizardry series after the departure of its original creators in the late 1980s. More recently, Bradley appears to have become an eccentric recluse, notoriously spending a decade rereleasing the same terrible game. But in between those two periods, he created one last game that was pretty decent - Wizards & Warriors. Originally published in 2000 by Activision back when they still dealt in such things, for many years Wizards & Warriors was hard to obtain and hard to run on modern operating systems. Enthusiasts appear to have figured out the latter problem recently, and that may be why Wizards & Warriors was finally released on GOG today. Nobody bothered to create a trailer for this release, so I'll just post GOG's description of the game:

An RPG as vast as legend itself.

In an enchanted medieval realm known as the Gael Serran, an evil Pharaoh has overcome a curse and returned to wreak havoc. Only the legendary Mavin Sword--a blade forged of twin metals, one cursed by evil, the other blessed by the divine--has the strength to bring his defeat. With the assistance of Kerah, an angel, and Erathsmedor, a dragon, you must engage on a dangerous quest to uncover the legend of the Mavin Sword and bring an end to all evil in the land.

Can you uncover the mysteries of the Sword before terror reigns?
  • Encounter over 100 NPCs, battle 350 characters and creatures, wield weapons and cast a myriad of magic spells.
  • Create a party of six adventurers and utilize 300 inventory items, including customizable pieces.
  • Embark on over 100 quests, mini-quests and adventures, battling in real-time and turn-based combat.
  • Discover the Enchanted Isle, Dragon's Den, Dwarven Mines, Liche Dungeon and over 40 other places to explore.
This release is actually not that big of a surprise in my opinion, as Activision have been releasing legacy titles on GOG at a steady pace over the past couple of years. But it's certainly a good day for the genre. You can grab Wizards & Warriors from GOG for the standard price of $6.

Apparently the mouse issue is not fixed, and if the mouse issue is not fixed, this is essentially just a legally purchasable version of a game you still can't play on modern operating systems. I don't know why the hell GOG would put this up for sale without addressing an issue that has been plaguing people trying to play this game for years.

I agree. But, at least now it is available for people to buy. Before this there was no way for someone to get it. I don't think even abandonware sites had it. But, if they are going to sell it they could have at least put a little effort into fixing it and making it work. They seemed to have done nothing. Well, I haven't seen anyone complain about the city scrolling issue so I guess that must have been fixed at least?

I think they've done less and less fixing of old games over time, just doesn't bring in the money as all these new indies, kind of a shame

Okay, I couldn't help myself and bought it. It works perfectly for me with none of the issues and hassle from the cd version.

It worked just as well pumping the resolution up under d3d. It did give me tons of mouse issues when I tried software resolution.

My mouse works fine but with slight lag. Maybe because I have the software running in the foreground due to the extra mouse buttons not working a ton of games without doing that? I don't know. But the thread in the gog GD forum gives a way to lower or raise something in mouse settings to fix it as a workaround. Still, gog should address this and not require a work around for a lot of people.

I install the Jeff Ludwig mod which replaces the exe. I didn't have issues, but something graphically seemed different. I could be imagining things. I think I'll reinstall and just replace the DLL files and not the exe just in case. Just FYI to show how much of a hassle this game used to be the mod's install order shows the basics. The gog version, even with the mouse issues, is a huge improvement. Even after trying this with windows 10 a couple years ago I had major issues with super dark graphics and other things-

Install Wizards and Warriors, and immediately make a copy of this directory.
This backup is optional, but quite helpful in a pinch.

1. Download Heuristic Park's Wizards and Warriors unofficial v1.0 patch (wwpatchv1_0.zip).
2. Extract wwpatchv1_0.zip to your Wizards and Warriors directory, overwriting any files.
3. Download the Town AVI XP pack (WW-townavi.zip).
4. Extract WW-townavi.zip to your Wizards and Warriors directory, overwriting any files.
5. Backup your deep6.exe, d6trlist.dat, d6item.dat, and d6mons.dat files.
6. Extract the files in "Wizards_and_Warriors-Jeff_Mod.zip" to your Wizards and Warriors directory.
Overwriting the files is okay, if they have been backed up (otherwise, you won't be able to go
back to the stock version).
7. Download Ross Ridge's Wizards and Warriors Graphics Patch (W&WGraphicsPatch.zip).
8. Extract W&WGraphicsPatch.zip to your Wizards and Warriors directory.
9. Run W&WGraphicsPatch.exe, and tell it to use a 1280x960 resolution (fully double 640x480
will render the most clean graphics). Of course, if your monitor won't do 1280x960 resolution,
800x600 would work too.
10. Run the game, and click "Start the Game". Hit the "Game Options" orb in the lower left
part of the screen, and then go to the "Graphics" tab. To use the resolution that you set via
the graphics patch, select "D3D 800x600" for the Driver option. If you selected 800x600 in step
10, I recommend that you run the game in "D3D 640x480" mode, though.

11. Quit the game, and then restart it.

12. You should be good to go! Enjoy!

Cheers! If you like the mod, give me a shout out at
http:\\jeffludwig.com\contact.php

Nevermind - they didn't add the AVI fix so you can access all buildings in towns. Jeff Ludwig has the fix in his download section.

It's a hell of a lot easier indeed to get it running with the GOG version compared to what had to be done previously (as explained above by Roqua ).

I am pretty sure they basically just repackaged a working version of the game that uses all these patches, but finding the original CDs or even downloading it from an abandonware site is a pain in the ass (it's one of the few games that is sort of hard to find on abandonware sites).

It has never been that hard to either find or get running, at least not in the last 5 years, because I've installed it on at least 3 different laptops. The problem is that once you get it running, it is still nearly unplayable, mostly because of the mouse lag. The only system I got it to work on (in a playable state) was an ancient (by today's standards) desktop sitting in my closet that happens to run with Windows Vista. Anything Windows 8 and beyond has always been a complete no-go for me.

Oddly intrigued.

What is character development/skill progression like? Is it similar to M&MVI?

Cheers,

Not really. Similar chargen, but with races having traits that are (or sometimes are) pretty impactful. Chardev I guess is sort of similar too. You have four base classes and a bunch of advanced classes with three "elite" classes requiring quests. You get traits and can buy them at a guild. I guess other than traits it is pretty similar, but deeper and requiring more planning and class changing. Except W&W makes hitting rats and bats the most annoying thing you can imagine and circle strafing isn't really a viable tactic, but range killing is.

Wait until you find the dildo.
Also, try using the dildo on the chick you can find in the same dungeon.

I still have it around. Old game which should be released as noncommercial freeware. It's horribly outdated and it's technological lapses shows.

Very important.
Is this Turn Based?
Sort of. It autopauses while waiting for your orders, but unpauses if you start moving or open the inventory. It's not twitchy/2-step dance if that's what you're worried about.

Just to add to this - it has a speed slider too and animations don't stop when paused which makes hitting certain enemies extremely annoying.

Purchased, installed, followed Roqua's instructions to get patched and modded up, thoroughly enjoying so far.

In fact I sat here playing it for far too long and now I'm fucking starving and my ass hurts.

W&W is way better than all of those put together.
