Too bad 1.0 apparently has no new gameplay except a food restriction system in case you don't want certain colonists eating potato salad because you'd rather give them fried rice instead. yippeeeee
Hahaha it is however a pretty convenient addition

*Better food gives morale bonuses but it's much more "expensive" therefore it makes sense to limit it only for... sad people

Food restriction is awesome, now you can prevent packaged survival meal from being consumed on breakfast and save it for caravans. Or make prisoners eat all the trash

That's a good idea, but I already have another solution for this problem. Make a pantry for pemmican/survival meals that's slightly inconvenient to get to. Hungry doods generally grab whatever food is closest. I am interested to see how this works though.

never even watched a video about this game. are there mods i should install even before trying vanilla? for the record, i played jagged alliance 2 the first time with 1.13 and found its amount of equipment and features to be satisfying.

Vanilla is p.good and I would suggest to go for that initially because there are so many mods that you'll get "lost". It's better to try it and get a feeling of what you miss and what you'd prefer and then add all that through mods

I've also only played the game unmodded so far. Two runs, almost a year ago by now.
And I'll certainly play 1.0 without mods, too. At least once.

After that, who knows.
But the game is definitely deep enough for a few runs in its vanilla state.

not sure if serious...
I'm serious man. There are mods for almost anything you can imagine. It's better to try the game once and see what you like/dislike and then start modding up.
alright, it looks like you could use some pictures, but i can't draw so i'll try to explain again, in the simplest way possible.
i don't give a fuck about vanilla, i want the best experience possible from the get go. which are the mods which undoubtly improve the game and add needed features?

Alright it looks like you want a clearer answer.
There is NO DEFINITIVE BEST MOD THAT YOU MUST HAVE INSTALLED.
It's completely up to you. Sorry if that's hard to understand. If you want I can send you my list of mods and if you like it, go ahead and use them

Just go for the steam workshop or "released mods" boards of Rimworld and download things you would like to see.
Personally, I like at least one or two mods adding different real world weapons, mending (so you can repair/dismantle things), expanded prosthetics and organ engineering, vegetable garden (If you want your colonists to cook and eat something else then pemmican/simple meal/lavish meal and other abstract stuff).
I also go with hairstyles, furniture and other kind of mods which gives my colonies more flavour.
If you don't mind real world shit - https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;u=57988 this guy is doing pretty nice mods as well.

More script intensive things? Check out Jecrell mods. Dude is doing some crazy shit like magic, jedi powers and other stuff.

MadMaxHellfire Don't even cruise mods yet. Just play the vanilla game and make sure you have permadeath on like you're supposed to.

As you play, think about things that annoy you, like "it's weird that a storage cabinet can only hold two weapons, that's causing problems it shouldn't", or "but why can't my colonists wear clown costumes?" This will be different for every player so it's fucking stupid to expect somebody to tell you "one true list" of perfect mods. Make a list of the things you want to change about the game. (Note, you may not want to change anything, this doesn't make you a bad person.)

When your first colony gets wiped out, and it will, then look up a few mods to make the game more like you want and start your next colony.

EDIT: I have hundreds of hours in the game and the only mod I really like is Locks, because some of my colonists don't want everybody and their dog tracking mud and hair all over their bedroom. Sometimes I like to use EdB Prepare Carefully when I want to tell a specific story. Recently I added [SYR] Set Up Camp because I find caravanning extremely annoying, but I haven't tried it yet. And today I added RimWriter because a colony library sounds cool. That's it, those are the 4 mods I have subbed.

well, 1.13 IS the perfect mod. who would like to play simcity4 without network addon? and what about xcom without long war? x3 without xtension? new vegas without project nevada? cities skylines without the bird killer? i know these are mostly overhauls, but each of them brings features missed by the programmers which became mandatory once tried. a game as vast as rimworld surely has to have such missed features. i'm looking for them, but speaking with some people seems like doing it with a wall. and a stupid one.

It's missing features like water management. Does it mean you want to install mods that bring drinking water requirement? Or sanitation? No? Yes? Maybe?

Do you feel better implant management is good? Or do you feel it's cheating? How about gun porn mods? Are they cool or do they bring IMBALANCE? Storage mods? Are they neat or borderline cheating? Do you want Lovecraftian monsters? Cults? Cat girls? Low tier tech addition? High tier tech addition? Fridges? More furniture? Better carpets? Robots to take care of your colony's menial labor? Denser forests? Denser, more dangerous forests? Rideable animals? Dinosaurs? Rideable dinosaurs? Animal prosthetics? Dinosaur prosthetics? Hotel & hospitality mods?

Actually you know what, there is a mod that is a must-have, it's the one that changes the grass regrowth algorithm. Not that I remember its name though.

Other than that? Just start playing, browse the mod library, install shit, eventually get surprised that your game takes 5 minutes to load and has you scroll through the mods for a minute or so.

The way you're approaching it makes YOU the stupid wall because you seem to fail to listen. There's no "must-have" overhauls, but there's thousands of things you can bolt onto the base game to make it play kinda sorta the way you want it to play. EPOE, Hospitality and a few others are very frequently on people's mod lists, though, so maybe those. Maybe. There is no 1.13 or Long War here, not yet, at least, maybe once full game releases someone might go for a major overhaul project.

see? was it that hard?

Listen you little fucking faggot, in your first post you asked the question: SHOULD I INSTALL ANY MODS BEFORE TRYING VANILLA?

So the answer is NO, because if you install mods you are no longer playing vanilla now are you?

You stupid ungrateful Italian cunt.

Wait for Hardcore SK to be updated so you don't have to spend time trying to balance bullshit equipment with bullshit monsters (not that SK does that great of a job).
Also fuck playing Rimworld without mods, I played vanilla first and it sucked due to the pointless busywork and low amounts of content. It might be better nowadays since the dev stole assimilated a bunch of features from mods but I'm sure there's still plenty of QoL mods that can make the experience much better, and that's just the most basic way to improve the game.

Am I the only one just can't stand the art style of this and Prison Architect? Seems like great games with depth and stuff to mess around with, but I just get disgusted with how the characters are drawn and how they move and bounce around. It's so off-putting that any desire to understand how the game works evaporates within about a minute of starting.

Yes.

Think of it like this: It's like a P&P/tabletop game, but on the computer. You have a flat map, with flat stuff like trees, buildings and walls, obstacles, items, etc. and flat figurines, which represent people, animals, enemies, etc.

Basically, you shouldn't think how unrealistic the characters, movement and everything is. Those are just "tokens" being moved around on a flat map, that represent "things", not the "things" themselves.

If you played P&P games with a flat map and flat figurines, you will be right at home with these games graphics.

I'm fine with a flat, simplistic map. I've played Dwarf Fortress for weeks on end. Rimworld just looks wrong and bad. I'm not even sure how to describe why it looks wrong to me. I've played plenty of cartoonish games and enjoyed them but something about Rimworld... "triggers" me.

I'm fine with the art style, but I completely understand how if it's annoying to you, it must be really annoying.

I'm just happy that we're finally, after about 20 years, reaching the point where it's considered acceptable to release a game with 2D graphics. For all this time, we've been extremely constrained in what kinds of games are made. Maybe now we can finally go back and look at '90s games and see that there was a lot of tradition that died out just because it didn't look good in 3D.
